- There are so many toxic lies/false beliefs that hold nurses back. In this video, I talk about two of these toxic lies. The first is "I'm just a nurse". You are so much more as a nurse! The second is: "I am not a real nurse unless I go into med-surg, ED or ICU". Both of these lies are completely false. In this video, I have some ideas of where they come from and how to dispel them.

What are some of the toxic lies about nurses that you are breaking through ?
Great video. I would like to debunk the myth that male RN's progress quickly up the ladder. The only reason why I made it to a desk job after 7 years of direct care providing is the employer was mass hiring in a field I had trained in. I was turned down for many positions up the ladder only to find that the manager hired her best friend who was of course female.
One thing I always find dismissive in nursing is when we are sick we have to go to our physician to authenticate we are indeed sick and may even require shelling out for a sick note! I guess we aren't the most trusted profession.
I’m glad you’re discussing these toxic lies. I agree that they have been ingrained since nursing school. We should celebrate the diversity and flexibility within nursing and how each area is a unique speciality of its own that requires training and mentoring.
I am a level 4 NICU nurse because I love the challenge of taking care of babies and supporting families in the most challenging days of their lives. I never felt forced to do it or I would be less than. I’m grateful that.
Nice nice nice. these challenges seems to be universal.
Tnx Lisa.
I agree with part two, that lie that Critical Care, ED, or Med Surg, is so high up there. Some employers cannot take you, unless you fall in those areas. Especially for IENs.
Thank you for your comment Angela. I guess it depends on where you are applying. It does show where these beliefs come from.
My usual retort was always this...."If I had wanted to be a doctor I would have gone to medical school". Note the period at the end of that sentence . Nurses have always had to be their own champions.
Absolutely! No other explanation needed.
