You know a song is going to be good when in under a minute and a half it goes from epic prog-metal overture to "hey, let's just play some polka" and then back again.
I think that polka part has something to do with the emotion of laughing at yourself for humiliating yourself for love, as the lyrics imply. A sort of post depressive madness that only makes you laugh at how that feeling was self-destructive and shameful. (maybe becaus I associate the rythim with a circus? so it made me feel like a clown) The second part of the polka, near 9:00, progress into a very explosive and uplifiting segment that might reflect the victory over those feelings. Just to fall down on the dark tone chorus again, simbolizing the fall into depression again, as it's not something you overcome on a single try. Ups and Downs, just like the music itself
I would give anything to be able to listen to this song with my mom. I discovered the band after she died 2 years ago. She loved prog and metal and generally melodic amazing music. We really shared that. When I read the lyrics they almost evoke her story. I'll raise my kids on this tune, because I know damn well it's what she would have done.
Yeah I'm pleasantly surprised; good players in this group...just discovered them myself. Apparently all of the educated musicians these days are going to rock, metal, opera, jazz and classical haha.
Streams of light unite with water running through our veins. Streams of blood like liquid, "love is running through our veins..." I heard this, got goosebumps, and had a really good cry. This is was too powerful.
Rebecca Producción Musical This band is amazing. I think they will be performing at next edition of BeProg Festival with other great bands. Hope to be there
So this happened: *Rachel is out picking up pizza* "What is taking rachel so long?" "SHE MAY NEVER RETURN! BUT I CAN WAIT FOREVER!" "Are you ok?" "IF WE CANT MAKE AMENDS" "Are you high?" "ILL CHASE YOUR RAINBOW TO THE END" "Im calling 911"
I've listened to this song quite a lot the last couple of months, and contrary to other songs, this just doesn't get boring. This might literally be the best song I've ever heard. Everything about it is God. Damn. Amazing.
I'm a relatively new haken fan, I found out about them about 2 months ago, and, I've always liked weird music, which started when I was 9, about 10 years ago, when I found the song Hocus Pocus by Focus on a cd my dad had gotten, and so my love for progressive music grew on, starting with Rush, then moving on to King Crimson, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and so on. But I always thought these masterpieces of art were forever stuck in the past, because modern prog just didn't have that peculiar, strange, and surprising touch to it. I like Dream Theater, but talent/skill is a slim replacement for imagination. Then, Haken: The Mountain appeared in my suggested videos, and I was hooked from then on. But going back to older stuff I haven't heard before, and this song in particular, I was amazed at such a great sound, and then, boom. 8:00 happened, and my faith in modern music is fully restored. Prog Metal Ragtime? Absolutely amazing. Probably one of the greatest songs I've ever heard, on all levels.
Hey man i am a big prog fan myself and there are a lot of good progressive bands out these days if your looking for cool interesting stuff then you should check out thought chamber (i found these guys this week and i love the song transcend its kinda nice sounding) also check out sun caged those guys are progressive titans. You should also check out darkology there are a lot more to check out my friend like andromeda, pagan's mind, symphony x, and kamelot!!!! message me with what you think about this kind of stuff id like to know
I can relate to everything you say. however, Dream Theater has done more for me than any of these bands. They allowed me to enjoy this type of music. Their music radiates imagination. Talent/skill doesn't diminish the imagination, just hides it from the sight of some listeners.
***** It's like people saying there is no emotions in Dream Theater's songs... like wtf have they been listenning to? No emotions nor imagination? really people...
Tar Minyatur I can relate to this though. Dream Theater was the gateway into prog for me and when I started listening to Dream Theater, I was blown away by most of their albums. After listening to some other artists for quite a while now, coming back to Dream Theater was like "Yeah - it DOES sound kind of emotionless and mechanical..." Don't get me wrong, I still really like them and I'm looking forward to their new album, but Dream Theater has this tendency to write songs that are supposed to be huge and epic with insane guitar solos and stuff like that. And from a technical standpoint, their music is really impressive. But there is more to music than just odd meters and technicality.
Ther3tr0 Please, even though my mind has been saturated with Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Haken and all for years, I can't possibly re-listen to Scenes From A Memory and not cry all the feels out. Dream Theater have their weak songs, their skip songs, their technical showoffs, but now, they all have them. DT just chose another face of the polyhedron to focus on then the others, there might be some imbalance in their emotional delivery, but I don't think they have a total lack.
This has been my fav song ever since I got to listen to it. I always come back now and then to experience how amazingly brilliant composition of a music and musicality it is. Its an absolute masterpiece! hands down 🙏 I fucking love 💗 Haken!
Cool, anyone notice some parts sound like video game music or a TV show fro example there is a verse that sounds like the simpsons intro theme or sonic adventure 2? It's so amazing, it's like watching a play but with your ears and it's 17 minutes long but you don't get bored of it.
+LootFragg I just listened to it for the first time yesterday, I've listened to haken for years, but only visions & the mountain. This song blew me away. The riff that they use is just so fucking amazing (Example 4:56)

I think youtube recommended this song to me after my Ayreon watchin spree of today. And I am really grateful the youtube-algorhithm did it. Wow, I'm immediately sold on this band. Quite ayreon like but a bit crazier ;)
i agree my fav band in the history its DT but this band Haken i discovered like 3 months ago and it blows my mind they are awesome finally another prog band who can change the world as we now it
You wanna know what happened? Dream Theater and Neal Morse with Transatlantic invented a new genre and did pretty good but never lived up to the genre's potential. They couldn't, they didn't have enough time for that. They will never reach the top of the mountain but they carried Haken halfway up in hope that they will make it. And you know what? Haken did it. They reached The Mountain (2013)
+Kunal Verma I love DT but I agree with OP. Haken is more rhythmically artful and compositionally creative. While DT certainly takes the prize on musicianship and virtuosity, Haken's phrasing, musical style, and variability within consistency makes gives them a more tasteful product, especially with their last two albums, and Restoration. Haken's quality seems more deliberate and thought out, whereas there are lots of passages in DT songs where I disagree with the musical choices. But hey just my opinion.
I'm so excited for this full album's re-release in the coming weeks, along with Visions, been holding off listening to the full album so I can hear it in all its remastered glory!
once in a very long while a band strikes a moment of genius in a song they write. for haken that stroke of genius happened between 1:43 and 2:30. that riff is superbly written well done guys. you have a new fan now
