I eat only meat, fish and eggs and occasionally some leafy greens and berries. Never eat fruits, it's just water and sugar. I've always wondered how a vegetarian diet can be sustainable since nothing of what's available today is only a couple of thousands years old which means we are not evolved to eat any of it's kind. It's like saying processed food is the most nutritious and sustainable for a human being to eat.
The best thing about starting to make healthier food yourself (as opposed to eating out) is noticing how much better it makes you feel. When you're getting plenty of vitamins and micronutrients from vegetables and a stable balance on carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, your body really wakes up and thrives. Our stomachs might be indifferent to what we eat but healthy food makes a huge difference in our happiness and well-being.
Stress and sadnessis a major factor, u can do all the above but life can be shortened, my mother passed away all of a sudden at age 62. My father had passed away in the morning so I guess she was heart broken
My father lived up to 93. He drank and ate whatever was cooked with appreciation. He said he would rather die younger, if people dictated him what to eat or not to eat. He always said appreciation prolonged anyone's life. Even envied rich people die young, because they are arrogant. Some rich people are conscientious eaters, but they still eat lots of junk food. No wonder, they are wicked.
Just a thought: Most vitamins are suggested to take with food. If you take vitamins everyday then fasting isn't an option. Some vitamins are too strong to take on an empty stomach. Think about that before you fast and you may have to omit vitamins for that day, which I believe would be a mistake.
I think you have it backwards. We should aim to get all of our vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients from whole foods... If you're supplementing more than a simple multivitamin once a day, you should probably adjust your diet, as supplemental vitamins are not replacements for healthy diets, and every vitamin, mineral and other micronutrient (of which there are thousands), can be sourced from whole foods, which are usually more bioavailable than supplements anyway.
Like fields left fallow for an entire growing season, your soil needs enrichment before planting new crops. Burnout can become that time in your life, where you finally nourish yourself in ways you’ve never stopped to do before. You are writing the story of your life, one that only you can tell. You can still change the ending. You can change what happens in the next chapter. You can change what happens on this very page. This story belongs to you. Tell it.
Okay, as a scientist, I have to ask... Has this research been peer reviewed, reproduced and subjected to falsification? Next, I'll make my personal observations. In the mid 80s, when I was in my mid 20s, I realized I wasn't indestructible. I changed my diet and followed Julia Child's advice to" "eat small portions, no seconds, no snacking and try a little of everything." I am now 62 and am the same weight, and I exercise, weight lift, and am as physically active as I ever was. My doctor is happy with my my labs, and all of my physical parameters. Nobody will ever know how long they will live. The important part is that we enjoy a good quality of life?
There is sooo much nuance on this topic but she covered it so well I think. If you’re fasting or restricting calories it is super important to still be hitting protein targets for age and activity levels to avoid numerous health problems.
Just follow what your grandparents or great grandparents tell you. Eat your vegetables, always stay busy, say your prayers, sleep early and wake up early.
All I know is that I lost 110 pounds in 12 months on the Keto diet, eating 2 meals per day within a 6 hour window. The best feature is that Keto is not a starvation or calorie counting diet..Keto consists of eating only whole foods, minus sugar and processed carbs. I'm now at my perfect body weight and at 70 years young, I've honestly never felt better in my life. It's amazing just how many ailments completely disappear when you cut sugar and processed carbs from your diet. Further proof that our diets are making us sick.
Glad it works for you, but there isn't enough evidence to recommend this diet to everyone or most people. Be mindful of how you discuss these topics because people can be heavily influenced by what they read. For many, keto is probably unnecessarily restrictive.
@@theprousteffect9717 I love it when morons chime in and try to dictate what should and shouldn't be said, and all under the guise of helping others who may not be bright enough to discern for themselves. How pathetic.
I do wonder how many of the ailment relief is from sugar and how much is from other carbs like good quality sourdough bread for example, and basic white rice. Yes they’re the same general “sugar” category, but maybe cutting out sugar in and of itself accounts for, for example, maybe 80% of the problem. And if that’s the case then I’ll keep my rice and bread moderately in the mix but be much more diligent on cutting sugar.
@@nomy006 Your body converts rice and grains into glucose, which is sugar. So, basically it's the same thing. This causes inflammation in the body and has zero nutritional value. Don't kid yourself.
”More fruits and veggies” she should have added: …and whole grains, beans and lentils. Because that’s what the long lived peoples have incommon and what is missing from the standard western diet. If you say fruits and veggies people think we should live on salad alone and that’s not possible, you will starve to death.
There is a lot of data on the effects of diet and exercise on the psyche and longevity. I want to see more studies on the effects of the lack of positive, professional representation of African Americans on other AA in the media.
“When you eat” pales in comparison to how much you eat and what you eat. 98% of the battle is absolutely how much you’re eating and what you’re eating. Don’t overeat your TDEE, eat Whole Foods for micronutrients, and do that consistently. There you go. The best nutrition advice that anyone can ever get. Also, you should exercise, get sunlight, sleep well, socialize, hydrate, and have some type of purpose.
Practicing common sense and eating what you want but In moderation along with physical exercise, is surely far less stressful and therefore less damaging than going on crash diets or restricting yourself from certain temptations. All my grand parents lived into their late 80s and 90s and did this
These advices seem to be great for people ranging between normal weight and obesity. What about the underweight ones? How can restriction of calories and fasting be beneficial to them?
It isn't. People who are seriously underweight have a much higher mortality. Being a bit underweight (or a bit overweight) usually is no big deal though, but gaining (or losing) a lot of weight might be a sign that there is something wrong.
I realised watching American videos that when they say 'reduce meats' i apply to my Asian culture. But it is not correct. I found out that meat consumption by Americans is almost 3 to 4 times as much as an Asian. We tend to have meat as an accompaniment not the main course. We are more rice heavy though.
At 1:25 she says it's might not the caloric restriction that beneficial thing, so if you cant restrict your calories then just moving away from overeating will have a beneficial outcome. Well, isn't that the same thing? If you're not overeating you are certainly reducing/restricting your calories.
Nope, caloric restriction is reducing from the average in a deliberate way. It is not stopping overeating. That's different and even worse, ala the obesity epidemic in the US. People who are overeating need to first stop that. Then, they can practice caloric restriction.
This is really about fasting. Little care was given to whole food plant based. In fact, the narrator minimized it’s benefits, for which there is extensive research.
Question: do you find you can do strenuous tasks for long periods of time or so you just look good and feel good and do simple exercise regularly? I really enjoy 10 mile hikes up steep hills but you really need calories to do it so finding the balance of calories in and out can be tricky. Like I want to look thin but I want to be strong and be able to do all my mma and my deep hikes and running. Sometimes I find the right low cal balance and am able to sustain intense energy depleting exercise it like today I did my hike 2 miles in 45 mins up a 28 percent grade and it was oddly hard, meanwhile a week ago did 10 miles up half that grade and smashed it in a bout 2:30 hours. Does this make sense? Like I’m always looking for tips on how to balance getting just enough intake and still being able to do these intense exercises. Thoughts? Anyone get where I’m coming from?

I am a nutritionist and have been eating extremely healthy for the last 23 years. My kids never once ate at a fast food restaurant (they're adults now), nor did they ever take a medication, not once, not even cough syrup or Tylenol. I am also an herbalist, so we would use natural remedies and herbs to treat illnesses. I have gone back and forth between veganism and meat eating, and I just feel better eating a variety of organic, whole foods. Grass-fed meats, fatty fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, beans, eggs, gluten free grains, and cultured dairy. (Haven't had a doughnut or French fries in over 20 years). I make my own kefir and yogurt with raw, grass-fed dairy I get at a local farm and even ferment my own kombucha. I also grow a lot of food. We have a large raspberry patch, blueberries, Juneberries, black currants, a pear tree, strawberries, herbs, kale, cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbages, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans etc. I also love to forage for food in the woods near my home. Lots of fun.

I’ve recently changed my view on this because I would normally agree. I’ve never struggled with over eating but the amount of people that do and who try to stop and are unable has pushed me more towards its not necessarily their fault at all. With smoking we’ve seen a change in people not starting to smoke to begin with rather than everyone quitting. We need a social change in how we eat because for some it seems nearly impossible to simply stop overeating. Just as it seems impossible for some to quit smoking. (I say as a former smoker)
Why do you need to build muscle? If you suffered from an illness that left you with muscular atrophy, of course you need to consume more calories/protein to recover. But, if your only goal is to look ""better"" then the question is, why? What for? Or, are you in a trade that requires you to make lots of physical effort, are you a firefighter? A pro wrestler? A lifeguard? If not, why, then? Being healthy and fit is one thing. Being a comic-book lookalike hero, quite another. Do you need it, or is a cultural pressure of sorts?

@@BenTheThird I would recommend two channels. Nutritionfacts is run by a doctor who provides study after study after study about the various benefits of a plant based diet over one containing meat, from eliminating saturated fat from the diet that causes heart disease to lower rates of cancer. He convinced me to do a plant based diet instead of immune suppressing medication for my crohns and now I'm crohns free and feeling amazing. The second channel is Mic the Vegan who also provides study after study, but he also debunks videos that advocate for meat eating and consistently shows that they use out dated studies, use studies funded by meat corporations and/or misrepresent data. I've personally never seen anyone who can confidently assert that meat is in anyway required or even healthy for long term, frequent consumption, but I've seen a multitude of studies that say that reducing or, even better, ceasing meat intake will reduce your inflammation and risk for many diseases.

Fuck yea she summed up everything nicely. Good video. I don't say that often. There're lot of words she said that need to be unpacked tho. But this is gold right there.
Yep. while studies are great and can show us what is healthier for the AVERAGE individual, I'm all for listening to your body to determine what is healthiest for you. There are too many differing factors, like genes, microbiome, etc., that can play into how your body digests food to hold too tightly to a specific set of recommendations. We also need to be wary about certain diets if we have a family history of a particular disease that is known to be at higher risk when eating a diet high in certain foods. But if you feel really good and healthy eating the way you do (whatever the foods are or the schedule), feel satiated when you do eat a meal and don't feel hungry again in two hours, have issues with compulsive eating/binging, and your diet doesn't continuously cause weight gain (or loss) outside of a healthy range, then stick to that diet. Science is great for general guidelines, so you can start with those recommendations, but don't feel so stuck to them that they HAVE to work for you. They are based on averages, or at least majorities, and many of us fall outside of some of these general rules on at least SOMETHING. Also, it helps not to hold your diet as an ideology/religion/etc., because that can obscure things and make you continue to do it even if it's not working for you.
Most of us have some form of food we do not like the taste of or just do not want to eat even if we cannot say why. I try to be very tuned to my body and for reasons I cannot explain, I do not eat ginger, fish oil, turmeric, or sour cream or buttermilk. I've always believed I eat more food than I need, and my recent intermittent fasting routine has suited me very well, and my body is finding itself lighter and happier so to speak. I believe we can really get healthier by tuning into what our bodies are telling us.
All the things which you mentioned that are new or lack research are already well researched and documented in Indian lifestyles. Indian have known these things since centuries..

you should seriously look up plant based diets and IBS. most peoples symptoms go into full remission with the right foods (even if you cant do it all the way)
And also look into carnivore diet 😅 Most people have a reduction of their symptoms by only eating meat and animal products. Research the subject, but many people do find help by changing to healthy keto, ketovore, AIP, low carbohydrate diets. I think that you nees to experiment what works for you. Often there is very districtive diet on the beginning for your body and lining of the intestines to heal and then you can move to maintenance phase.

I would rather achieve "Hormesis" with the right exercise then fasting cause I can eat more food, while getting the same results, healthwise. Plus, I gain strength, and muscle I do this everyday by doing just one rep, and set, of heavy resistance training on the whole body which takes no more then two minutes. And, I do a health rebound for just one minute on my "cellerciser", in the morning before I eat a big meal The important part of the diet is more carbs then protein, and I eat every three hours with snacking on something sweet like dried fruit, in between. Nuts/seeds are a must, as well as beans, but I just make a milk out of the nuts/seeds, and I eat a 1/4 cup of beans with my food all the time. I soak my dried beans in baking soda water to prevent gas, and make the beans extra soft!
There is no requirement in the human diet for carbohydrates. In fact, they are contraindicated. Nut/ seeds are full of toxins, anti-nutrients, and gut-damaging fiber.

I don't agree personally. What's optimal is being physically active, and overall not eating too much of anything including plant based foods. Eat low calorie high dense foods like veggies and proteins. Don’t starve yourself but also remember being mildly hungry isn’t necessarily bad (unless underlying illness like diabetes).

Dr. Levine did a great job communicating a simple and easy-to-understand message about a complex topic!
I always do Mediterranean diet, one of the most recommended and healthy 👉✌️
Like fields left fallow for an entire growing season, your soil needs enrichment before planting new crops. Burnout can become that time in your life, where you finally nourish yourself in ways you’ve never stopped to do before.
You are writing the story of your life, one that only you can tell. You can still change the ending. You can change what happens in the next chapter. You can change what happens on this very page. This story belongs to you.
Tell it.
I don’t mind the diet
I mind the longevity
Thanks so much
The most important thing for me is caloric restriction
What and when we eat 😊
Watching all these people eat delicious food is making me so hungry now!
Okay, as a scientist, I have to ask... Has this research been peer reviewed, reproduced and subjected to falsification?
Next, I'll make my personal observations. In the mid 80s, when I was in my mid 20s, I realized I wasn't indestructible. I changed my diet and followed Julia Child's advice to" "eat small portions, no seconds, no snacking and try a little of everything."
I am now 62 and am the same weight, and I exercise, weight lift, and am as physically active as I ever was.
That’s amazing to hear! Glad you found what works for you. 😀
Everybody is unique. So is our dietary needs. You need to find what works for you.
There is a lot of data on the effects of diet and exercise on the psyche and longevity. I want to see more studies on the effects of the lack of positive, professional representation of African Americans on other AA in the media.
Just drinking more water can make a difference in your mood and how you feel after you eat
I ❤ eating vegetables and fruits
It is so good to live vegan! Animals also really appreciate it! And the environment! Win win win!
We Muslims are blessed with the month of Ramadan, a holy month in the calendar year for fasting purpose
Practicing common sense and eating what you want but In moderation along with physical exercise, is surely far less stressful and therefore less damaging than going on crash diets or restricting yourself from certain temptations. All my grand parents lived into their late 80s and 90s and did this
generally super! Now I'm in a great mood for the whole day! thank you!:)
Thanks Morgan. Great info for all of us!!! THANKS!!!
These advices seem to be great for people ranging between normal weight and obesity. What about the underweight ones? How can restriction of calories and fasting be beneficial to them?
It isn't. People who are seriously underweight have a much higher mortality. Being a bit underweight (or a bit overweight) usually is no big deal though, but gaining (or losing) a lot of weight might be a sign that there is something wrong.
under weight people shouldn't follow these instructions. they should get checked by their doctor for any medical reasons they are under weight
Dr. Morgan Levine is amazing!
The best line is at the end 💖💖
1. How much we eat
2. What we eat
3. When we eat
How do I shorten my life?
This is really about fasting. Little care was given to whole food plant based. In fact, the narrator minimized it’s benefits, for which there is extensive research.
I've eaten around 1200 calories a day or less for thirty years. I still get carded at 46. It does work.
This is below the calories that is needed per person for age 20 -39. It might give rise to nutritional deficiency if it prolongs.
Caloric restriction is okay for temporarily observed.
In our asian country, daily needs
For ages 19 -29, women need 1860 kcal
For men 19-29, 2490 kcal
However this kcal amount goes lower as the person ages
Kcal in age 30 - 49
Female: 1810
Male: 2420
People on age 40's should go for vegetables of 4 servings but kcal is met
I think if more statistics and numbers were included in the explantion it would be more useful
Definetely! A lot longer too
"We don't know what genetics has to do with aging"
Seems like a key moderator. I think we need to know a lot more before finding the facts.
Genétics is less than 10% of aging.
@@alrent2992 I'm familiar with published data, which leaves a lot of questions unanswered, specifically some populaces heredity along with differences in other species in considerable longevity variances. And genetics is an accepted as method of many disease propagation. I stand by my statement we need to know a lot more.
@@alrent2992 That would be a huge surprise considering its impact on everything else.
But how does our heritage affect us though? There is no way an East Asian body type is remotely the same as a African or Scandinavian type, with different climates and environment affecting our adaptions for over thousands of years.
There has been studies done on Japanese people who emigrated to US, ana also on identical twins where one lived in Japan and one in the US, and the culture of eating definitely affected their health and how long they lived. They ended up getting diseases that are rare in Japan. You can search for studies of this kind and also "Forks Over Knives" book and film and the Drs involved talk about these kinds of studies.
Because heritage is so intertwined with income and comorbidity in the US, we don't really know.
That's if you know all your ancestors.
Kcal needed by a population is computed in a country.
So if you are asian in USA. research your kcal needs from the country of origin of your ancestors/family
In my southeast asian country,
Kcal needed per day in table form is posted in govt website so everybody can access it.
What does "caloric restriction" mean in this context? Does it mean eating less than you need? Wouldn't that lead to problems in the long run?
at approximately 2:40 she says recapitulate when she means replicate. Maybe you can edit that
Low protein plant diet for boys and men, yea, if you want a weak and petite body that lasts for a long time because it never works hard at all. Hope you have someone taking care of you or enough money that unavoidable physical labor isn't part of your life. Fellas, get diet advice from men that already look and perform the way you want to with similar genetics, and avoid their mistakes to improve on it. You can become far more resilient with the hormesis of consumption and exertion than restriction and preservation, unless you just really want to drag out those nursing home years.
I am on a vegan diet and my muscles are massive, I have no idea what you're talking about. Wheats, nuts and legumes combined cover all of the proteins a meat would give me with the added benefit of there being nothing working to detriment my heart health like meat would.
@@Kulei666 It's not so much about the source of protein, its about her direct statement of "a low protein diet may be beneficial" [for children]. Yes most of us will be fine on a beans and greens meal plan as adults (although you need b12 supplements on a vegan diet), but this was a very fast and reckless statement that suggests children should avoid protein when its already hard to get enough to begin with. Mammals need milk at least, it is our evolutionary distinction.
Depends on your activity level, but like @YTJaGoodzianka, have been on a plant based diet and lifting weights for a number of years. Feeling my biggest and fittest on a vegan diet, so the 'soy boy' stuff is complete bs.
Well presented, thanks for the information
So where did the idea that we need to eat 3 meals a day come from? About a year ago I went to 1 meal a day and have lost 40 pounds. Mostly from fat, if the amount of muscle definition I can now see is any indication. And I don't miss those other 2 meals yet I really do enjoy that one meal a whole lot more.
Do you have problems with hunger in between your meals? I feel like I could never do this
@@perkypat2214I’ve been eating one meal since I was 16 I’m 21 now. You struggle with hunger when you begin as your body adapts it will only feel hunger at the time you normally eat your meals. It's bizarre that 02:15 is just taken as a given. That's like saying "we can't reduce the number of people who smoke" back in the 20th century.
Dr Linda Hazzard took caloric restriction to the extreme. Fad diets are very cultish and often put one on the road to nowhere.
How can I have a good diet to gain muscle??
What if you need to be in a calorie surplus to build muscle
Why do you need to build muscle? If you suffered from an illness that left you with muscular atrophy, of course you need to consume more calories/protein to recover. But, if your only goal is to look ""better"" then the question is, why? What for? Or, are you in a trade that requires you to make lots of physical effort, are you a firefighter? A pro wrestler? A lifeguard? If not, why, then?
Being healthy and fit is one thing. Being a comic-book lookalike hero, quite another. Do you need it, or is a cultural pressure of sorts?
@@MariaMartinez-researcher same reason people draw, or listen to music, there is no real *point* but it helps motivate you to exercise, which in turn DOES promote health. It's all about calories in, calories out.

Great video. I would only like to add a correction to the last part, when to eat isn't some new revelation. Traditional cultures have always emphasized on linking the body clock and eating the last meal before the sunset, and not again eating befire the sunrise.

To my knowledge, this clinical question has never been researched at a level to which one can confidently assert this claim. There are too many confounding variables and too many observational outliers.
Naa. Japanese live a long time and they eat a lot of meat and fish. Its the freshness of the food and quality that matters. Not the llant diet

Ayurveda literally taught us that 5000 years ago
Very wise words.
EXACTLY!!! Perfectly put! 👍👍👍

This video is just filled with so much weight normative language. I want to see the actual studies she’s referring to and her qualifications to talk on this topic.
I wondered too. A quick search shows she has a PhD in gerontology from USC and was a professor at the Yale School of Medicine, Department of Pathology, where she ran the Lab for Aging in Living Systems. A search of PubMed shows she is the co-author or author of dozens of peer reviewed studies, many/most of which seem to relate to aging, including the role of diet, exercise, education and lifestyle factors in epigenetic aging.
Eating healthier isnt gonna slow the aging process, it just makes you less likely to die of a heart attack at 45.
You can have other alternatives like dietary supplements or NAD+ supplements.

Would love to try what I can out of these, like the volume intake and meal timings, if my body agrees with the change
you should seriously look up plant based diets and IBS. most peoples symptoms go into full remission with the right foods (even if you cant do it all the way)
And also look into carnivore diet 😅 Most people have a reduction of their symptoms by only eating meat and animal products.

I do this everyday by doing just one rep, and set, of heavy resistance training on the whole body which takes no more then two minutes. And, I do a health rebound for just one minute on my "cellerciser", in the morning before I eat a big meal
The important part of the diet is more carbs then protein, and I eat every three hours with snacking on something sweet like dried fruit, in between.
I don’t know. More carbs than proteins are actually what is killing people,i’d say. We eat way less proteins than we should and an insane amount of carbs, usually.
@@mantralibre1367 Depends on where you live, and your income level
On average, more protein is eaten. And the carbs that are ingested are usually simple carbs, not long chain carbs like rice, potatoes, yams, pasta, etc. They usually eat a lot of bread which breaks down fast, and/or sugar which is absorbed too fast and cause diabetes if abused
Even fructose is ingested too much cause they put it in everything. It, and salt, are the reason weight gain has happened as too much of both cause dehydration which causes fatty liver and weight gain

I don't agree personally. What's optimal is being physically active, and overall not eating too much of anything including plant based foods. Food science is extremely complex and constantly changing. If you’re hungry then eat but eat clean. Eat slowly and until satiated. Avoid high calorie low nutrient rich foods like complex carbs. Eat low calorie high dense foods like veggies and proteins. Don’t starve yourself but also remember being mildly hungry isn’t necessarily bad (unless underlying illness like diabetes).
