Usually, not always, if any of these people are trying to sell something, it should be discarded. I have found very few exceptions. I'm 82 and don't use supplements. I do use Flaxseed and a little Chia mainly for fiber but also a good source of protein. VegSource deserves a big thank you for keeping us informed. I appreciate you.

I am so grateful for people like Jeff who do the hard work that the rest of us don't have the time or the expertise to do. Nutrition studies can be a confusing mess to us lay people, and Jeff breaks it all down for us in language that's easy to understand. This video, as well as other videos that Jeff has done on Dr. Fuhrman, makes it clear that Fuhrman is not a trustworthy source of information. I wish there was a reliable source that rates these doctors and diet gurus so that we can know who is more trustworthy.

Jeff, I love you. I am only saying this publicly because Sabrina rocks too. :-) My 80 year old mom went into a nursing home last November mostly due to Alzheimer's/dementia...which her mom died from. Because I struggle to keep my blood sugar down and also have severe insomnia like both of them had/have...I've been very scared I'll get Alzheimer's. I know that both high blood sugar and not sleeping contribute. I have thought about buying DHA supplements due to people pushing omega 3 fats and the fact that not everyone's body can properly convert ALA to DHA. I am tired of taking pills (in general) and recently cut back on my multivitamin/minerals pills by 50% as I think I was getting too much of certain things. (I still take extra D with K2 as that IS a problem for me, along with extra calcium/magnesium/zinc.) I haven't "loved" Dr. Fuhrman for a while, but when I recently saw a video of him saying that women shouldn't eat more than 1,200 calories a day (1,400 - 1,500 max...if they worked out tons), I got downright pissed off. He his now telling people to starve themselves, especially if female!!

The reason I don't buy supplements from "gurus" or anyone online. I was convinced of this with Fuhrman when he touted his Omega-3 supplement versus other vegan ones due to his special process of handling & shipping.
Too bad because I think Fuhrman has done a lot of good work on his "G-BOMB" stuff and other work.
Personally, I do believe the Omega-3 problem is real and that the synthesis of ALA to DHA & EPA is an issue for most vegans as well as omnivores & most other diets.
For now, I just follow an ovo-pescatarian diet, just eating eggs when I go out to breakfast (maybe once a week) and fish twice a week (good source of Omega-3 DHA & EPA via sardines & salmon mainly). I also consume a lot of ground up chia & flax seeds (will try hemp soon), realizing most of the ALA is likely not converted over to the more useful EPA & DHA.
Looking for an Omega-3 (preferably vegan supplement) for EPA & DHA, but may go to a fish oil supplement for the time being that my sister has done. Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated.
Great information, and why I stick to ZOE and Carvalho among a few other sites, though in the long run for the health of the planet & animal cruelty combined with health, I believe a vegan diet or at least the Blue Zones diets are the way to go for most people (some people need other diets).

Another devastating analysis of the confusion Fuhrman bases his EPA/DHA claims on. Regarding the quote from the paper: "Although we did not observe a significant linear relationship between dietary omega-3 fatty acid intake and risk of cognitive decline, risk of cognitive decline decreased when the intake of omega-3 fatty acids exceeded 1.0 g/d". I read this as referring to any source of omega-3, whether it is ALA (plant food, not supplements), EPA or DHA. Recall the IOM recommendation for omega-3 is 1.1 (f) - 1.6 (m) g/d, based (not on deficiency studies, which arise only for people on extremely artificial tube/formula-fed diets, but) on the average intake of the high fat diet US population. If you watched Jeff Novick's 'From Oil to Nuts' talk, he goes through how virtually every low fat plant food has around 0.1 g of ALA per serving, meeting the 1.6g/d is very easy on a sufficient-calorie low fat plant-based diet. By Fuhrman's own logic of quoting this study (regardless of how valid the claim actually is), if you simply eat a low fat plant-based diet then 'risk of cognitive decline decreased', yet the guy constantly tries to bash low fat vegans as seriously risking brain-damage. The guy is incoherent on this topic.

I don’t why he is in the snake oil supplement business. Isn’t he rich enough? I saw his garden video. There are so many unanswered questions about DHA and health. I continue to include 2 tablespoons of freshly ground Chia, flax and a palm of walnuts in my daily smoothies. I have learned from studies? That your body is better at converting those plant forms of Omega 3s to the longer chains if you make your body work for it. I don’t know but at least I know that I’m getting some fiber. 😂. So sorry to hear and see that both of you, you and Dr. Fuhrman, didn't take into account further studies that have been made about DHA and EPA on the effect on humans. It's not just about dementia. (Algae) omega 3 is so incredibly important to us, especially kids. They earn better grades, learn faster and easier, have less mood swings in puberty. I notice a difference in my cognitive function within a day when I haven't taken algae oil (not the brand Dr. Fuhrman promotes - I couldn't even get my hands on it as I live in Germany) for a while. My joints and back don't hurt as much, my skin gets clear faster from an acne breakout, my skin becomes softer. Recently, I watched a video from a German opthalmologist who tried to reduce his eye dryness by taking omega 3s (fish oil in his case). He measured several parameters in his eyes with the devices he uses every day on patients in his doctor's office and the results were impressively positive. I will continue to take algae oil as it has so many benefits I can list them all. However, I never take any omega 3 in form of pills as they already rancid when you buy them - not recommended! And when you start a new bottle of algae oil, make sure to use it up in at most 3 months from opening it! I am a female and vegan for almost 30 years now. Since I started the algae oil, even my monthly bleedings have become less intensive and I don't lose as much blood as I used to before the oil.

Actually, Dr.Fuhrman is quite careful in his videos to give people the recipes to make many of the products he sells, he advises them it's better to make the recipes themselves, rather than buying the sauces he sells, for example; to paint him as a conman or snake oil salesman is both false and mean-spirited. Furthermore, he tells people how they can access nutrients from fruits, vegetables and other plant foods. Plant foods are full of phytochemicals that build health in the body, many of which cannot be obtained in a simple vegan, starch-based diet. I really don't understand your penchant for attacking vegan health experts when your energies could be better applied in debunking the Jordan Peterson carnivore diet type of scams. Moreover, I've seen video in which you teach people to eat white rice and frozen vegetables which is far inferior to the lessons in nutritious food preparation that Dr. Fuhrman makes freely available.

However when omega-3 supplements have been tested directly against control groups in well-done RCTs, they have never been found to decrease dementia or Alzheimer's. The evidence against smoking was strong and consistent, most researchers didn't believe it would be ethical to have a study where you required people to smoke for 10 years to compare to people not smoking. I do agree with you that evidence can be relevant gathered in different ways, if that's your point. Thanks!

Consider getting an Omega-Index test to measure your levels accurately. A result below 4 may indicate a problem, which can have serious implications for your well-being. Experts often recommend aiming for a level around 8 to optimize health outcomes.
Boosting your Omega-Index isn't just about following a one-size-fits-all suggestion to consume 1g of omega-3s. While flax, chia, and other plant-based sources can contribute, it's important to understand that some individuals may face genetic challenges in converting these omega-3s into the long-chain forms that specifically benefit brain health. Supplementing with vegan sources of DHA, can help and the dose can be tested to get your level up, in other words, you don't need to follow the 1g suggestions. Dr. Fuhrma has more extensive clinical experience than most and emphasizes the importance of supplementation based on his observations of patients. Rather than assuming his intentions are solely profit-driven, it's crucial to consider the knowledge he has gained through his practice. He has explained this numerous times and it is sobering and scary.
In a world where utopian visions of the perfect diet are often promoted, it's important to approach nutritional recommendations with caution. Don't fall into the trap of blindly following population-based studies that may not fully apply to your unique physiology. Be your own authority by seeking individualized information through lab testing. By understanding your personal Omega-Index and taking necessary supplementation when indicated, you can make informed choices about your health. Remember, relying solely on population studies without personalized insights may leave you unaware of your specific needs. Stay informed, stay proactive! If you watch the above video and think you don't need supplementation, then you have been misled. Utopias never end well, don't have your head in the sand, get tested.

Excellent points here, Dr. Thank you for this level-headed comment. I’m a long-time vegan who was recently tested for Omega 3 level and I was very low at 2.9. Yikes. That was a big surprise to me. So I’ve started supplementing. What else is one to do?🤷🏻‍♀️

Can you show a single quality study that shows 10 drops or even 20 drops a day causes any harm.
The fixation on "not even a drop" is not supported by any evidence.
Its just a slogan for those who don't spend the time to look at the science with a reasonable amount of investigation.
Even Esselstyn has never produced any evidence suggesting 10 drops or 20 drops is harmful.
A quick spray of pan to stop food from sticking delivers so little oil it couldn't possibly produce measureable harm. (hence no study showing such)
Not a drop.... is a psychological edict, not something based on physical science or reality.

Mr Jeff, what are your thoughts on the ka'chava superfood supplement. It is claimed to be vegan, organic, and have about 85 superfoods of the world. They say it contains about every mineral and vitamin needed. I recently tried it. I had never tried anything like this before. I feel it gives energy and satiety. It could possibly be so many nutrients in such a high amount. I can not post a link because RUclips deletes links, possibly not if its linking to RUclips, so I will try a different link.

Hi there - I don't know what that is, but did a quick search and looks like a milkshake kinda thing, that contains a lot of good foods. I don't see any healthy claims they are making though, so nothing to question about it. Looks delish. I somewhat limit taking too many calories in liquid form myself. Prefer to eat my food, plus it can be too easy for me to overeat calories when I'm drinking them!
