Dr. John McDougall is the most common sense Doctor that continuously brings a great and very informative message. A vegan high starch diet has completely turned my type 2 diabetes around. Live Well and Live Better !!
The published ratio of Omega 3 to 6 is 1:4. Todays western diet tips it way up on the side of 6, and 9 so we tend to chase the 3s. For me, the best way I have found is to eliminate those items which up the 6s, and eat a whole food, plants only diet. I include some chia seeds, avocado, walnuts, etc. Hope it's doing the trick. Thank you, Dr. McDougall, for giving us all the details. Love this way of life.
An unbalanced omega-6/omega-3 ratio in favor of omega-6 PUFAs is highly prothrombotic and proinflammatory, which contributes to the prevalence of atherosclerosis, obesity, and diabetes.
I’ve been eating more plant based than I ever have (about 90% plant based) and have eliminated dairy milk (I still use ghee since it doesn’t contain cow protein) and I honestly feel so good on this “diet”. No constipation, lots of energy, and my acne cleared up. I believe this is the way we’re supposed to eat. It just feels right and I discovered I really love grains, tubers/root vegetables and fruit.
Yes I love him too but he's not keeping up today with latest science and saying if he agrees or disagrees woth it and why. Its simple to do. But he never addresses this part.
How does the fish oil not go rancid at room temperature? I grind flax in green smoothies and put chia in lemonade. Eating fish or any meats is a dangerous crap shoot IMHO.😊
Dr Klaper was not recommending dha some time ago but returned to taking dha. The reason was low omega 3 index in the blood after two years. However I'm not really sure if this is an issue. Especially for an adult.
I really love this video great job! I feel like it would have been good if you would have mentioned what plant foods are a great source of fatty acids. It's also worth mentioning the RDA is only 1.6 grams of ALA. DHA is only required for infants. Even with low conversion a serving of flax or walnuts will get you there. But I have heard that just eating a proper variety of whole plant foods is sufficient. If someone wants preformed fatty acids seaweeds like nori and algae like chlorella are where it's at. Just stay away from spirulina.
@@purityandplants in addition to seeds and nuts, seaweeds like nori and algae like chlorella have DHA/EPA. Like Dr Barnard says, all good things in moderation. So a little ground flax here and there, small serving of walnuts occasionally, vegan sushi rolls a few times a week, a green smoothie a few times a week with chorella, I imagine these would be just some ways to really get a nice variety of sources. Of cours, there's plenty of other whole plant foods that rock the fatty acids. My take on Dr Tim Radak's talk is that just eating a variety of whole plant foods most likely will get us there without having to even add flax or nuts. His talk is one my channel if you're interested. And Dr Radak is very much a long time fan of Dr McDougall.
@@purityandplants I bought seeds online, soaked them for 24 hours in water till I saw them germinating (white hairs), planted them in a pot and set a plant grow light squarely at it to give it light 12 hours a day. They've already sprouted :-)
What folk don’t understand is when you have an imbalance of your gut bacteria, starch feed the pathogen. That’s why people with autism need to avoid starchy food for a long enough period to allow their gut lining time to recover. Autistic myself I did try to remove starch for a week and experience more mind clarity. As soon as I eat starch again after that week, chicory coffee or millet for instance, symptoms come back with a vengeance, with full force with big brain fog. So it a situation we must be aware. But a healthy person with healthy and well balanced gut flora will be able to benefit from eating starch and avoid animal products in my opinion as much as they can.
No wonder I'm still not healthy! Hi 👋 Dr Mcdougall. I'm upset. A girl I know in her 20s has lupus and she has lost all her teeth from the meds she was taking! It's criminal!
If omega 3s contribute to health problems such as cancer then how does he explain how Dr Brooke Goldner is reversing autoimmune diseases with omega 3s from plants. I am now confused.
Check Dr. McDougall's website. He has written newsletters or recorded a video on numerous subjects. Search on calcium and McDougall diet. If you are concerned about osteoporosis, search on that to hear what Dr. McDougall has to say. He backs everything up with scientific papers. And remember to always ask who funded a study and what are they selling? It is possible to manipulate the methodology in a study to be favorable to the funder.
I used to be very very not concerned and disconnect with the very world, i came from. Now knowing all this knowledge, i feel so guilty. Like everything is an ecosystem which connects to bigger ecosystems. Each individual species contribute to ecosystem. Everything is interlinked. Coming to the point, i really literally believe the fact that, "If oceans die, entire ecosystem collapses and everything on this planet dies, including the plant itself. We need to save oceans asap. You know what's funny and frustrating, in my entire career of education, i never was told once, anything about ecosystems, how everything is connected, not even a summary or brief statements" #govegan #saveoceans #saveanimals #saveearth
@Kevin Tao I probably use a tablespoon, I just poor in about that much. Sometimes I'll mix in other seeds too like hemp and/or chia. Dr Fuhrman uses about a tablespoon each of 3 different seeds in his breakfast. His patients may only use a teaspoon of a few different ones though, like if they have some cardiometabolic disease.
@Kevin Tao I've been vegan since 2011. I've been eating whole foods almost exclusively since 2017. I have perfect BMI. No fat. I use to use the cronometer on and off. These are healthy fats we are talking about. Dr Fuhrman isn't fat either. But he does exercise. I would only imagine Fuhrman exercises more than McDougall. I also only eat within an 8 hour window. Right now my only challenge is moving my eating time to earlier in the day. Polyunsaturated fats from seeds and nuts are some of the utmost healthy foods you can eat. Tons of evidence supporting this and doctors. A serving of flax is 2 tablespoons and I'm only doing 1 tablespoon so I can have room for some other seeds. I also only eat a serving of walnuts which is just an ounce.
Fish is an addition to the Japanese diet. Not a staple. Their staple is rice. Add seaweed, miso soup, tofu or edamame (whole soybeans). In Okinawa, the staple was sweet potatoes.
As a commited vegan and now GF also, I am always interested in what people have to say about the nutrients our bodies need and where we should get them from. However, I would look for that advice to be backed up by multiple sources and preferably not from sources who have a commercial interest, by selling me a course for instance. Here is what the AHA have to say on Omega3: "The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating one to two servings of seafood per week to reduce your risk of some heart problems, especially if you consume the seafood in place of less healthy foods. For people with heart disease, the AHA recommends consuming about 1 g per day EPA plus DHA, , but supplements are an option under the guidance of a health care provider. The AHA does not recommend omega-3 supplements for people who do not have a high risk of cardiovascular disease." Here is what they have to say on Cancer prevention: "Some studies suggest that people who get more omega-3s from foods and dietary supplements may have a lower risk of breast cancer and perhaps colorectal cancer. But a large clinical trial found that omega-3 supplements did not reduce the overall risk of cancer, or the risk of breast, prostate, or colorectal cancers. Other clinical trials in progress will help clarify whether omega-3s affect cancer risk." So it looks like from that summary, there can be benefits to LOWERING the risk of certain cancers and more evidence is required on their affects on the risk to other types of cancers. On AMD: "AMD is a major cause of vision loss among older adults. Studies suggest that people who get higher amounts of omega-3s from the foods they eat may have a lower risk of developing AMD. But once someone has AMD, taking omega-3 supplements does not keep the disease from getting worse or slow down vision loss." So some protection benefits there. Is Omega3 harmful (although Dr McDougall doesnt come out and say this directly, it seems to me his messaging is about reducing its consumption or at least reducing its consumpion from fish): "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends consuming no more than 5 g/day of EPA and DHA combined from dietary supplements. Any side effects from taking omega-3 supplements are usually mild. They include an unpleasant taste in the mouth, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, headache, and smelly sweat." So the the possible drawbacks from over-indulgence in Omega3 from supplements (which probably contain fish oil in most cases) is MILD. I think people should do their own research on these issues and be very wary of one person who quite clearly showed signs of hypochondria during his early medical career; which continued throughout his life (he then made a business out of it) - by gradually ruling out many food types that have widely recognised health benefits when taken in moderation.

Omega 6 is fine. Lack of Omega 3 might be a problem and not the balance.

Thanks Dr McDougall. What about epa /dha from algal sources?
Is epa /dha actually beneficial for the brain and eyes?

I'm taken to growing purslane for myself. Purslane apparently has the highest amount of omega-3 oil of any other plant.

Thankyou Dr! Sharp and clear
LOVE this profoundly intelligent message. Thank you.
I've never heard that omega 3's supress the immune system. Is that just the concentrated EPA/DHA from fish or does that include ALA in plant foods?
Only in the sense of being anti-inflammatory.
Those short videos educate me very well, thanks doc
Great info!
Thank you dr. Mcdougall ….I enjoy your talks ✌️👊🤝
IT MAKES YOU WONDER WHY DEAN ORNISH CONTINUES TO RECOMMEND OMEGA 3 SUPPLEMENTS!!
To balance the omega 6!
There is no need to balance omega 6. The lack of omega 3 is a problem.

I'll take my chances with the fish, I've seen how much chemical is sprayed on the veg we eat from the supermarket.
Oh yeah the water the fish are in is just so clean right? Even fresh water has contaminants you wouldn’t believe.

Which plants contain the highest amount of Omega3
Flax and chia seeds.

How about vitamin E
@Kevin Tao thank you I eat them
You don't need nuts and seeds for Vitamin E. Sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli.
What foods vegan have Omega 3
Flax seeds, Sacha Ichi seeds, hemp seeds, walnuts and leafy greens. Heck some fruits like melons even have some omega 3s check chronometer.
But dha/epa only in algea
Could we farm very small fishez and feed them right. Krill oil. Clean.
