The Big Picture - US-India Preferential trade

  • Date- 5 March, 2019: The US plans to end preferential trade status for India, under a scheme which allows certain products to enter the US duty-free. President Donald Trump said India had failed to assure the US it would provide reasonable access to its markets. India said the US move would have a "minimal economic impact". It is the latest US attempt to counter what it sees as unfair trade practices. President Trump has pledged to reduce US trade deficits, and has repeatedly criticised India for high tariffs. As a result, he directed the US Trade Representative's (USTR) office to remove India from a programme that grants it preferential trade treatment. Preferential trade treatment for India currently allows $5.6bn worth of exports to enter the United States duty free. In a letter to Congress, the US president said India had "not assured the United States that it will provide equitable and reasonable access to the markets of India". Under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) programme, "certain products can enter the US duty-free if the beneficiary developing country meets a set of criteria established by Congress".

Just a correction regarding Ambassador Niraj statement on comparative advantage; it was a theory by Ricardo and not Adam Smith.

I was wondering how Niraj Srivastava became the ambassador to US, he can't put his views forward. IS that the reason that US-India relations were never good.

GSP was introduced in 1976 to help poor countries climb out of poverty by exporting goods to USA. India is not a poor country anymore - we have stopped accepting foreign aid for natural calamities, have staked our right to be on the UN Security Council, Mission to the Moon etc. etc.India and Indians must be proud.

David Ricardo has developed Comparative Advantage theory not Adam Smith. He argued that a country boosts its economic growth the most by focusing on the industry in which it has the most substantial comparative advantage.

      Is that has happened!!!
What OIC did to india, can u tell me pls.

    • @bukkaharshvardhan

OIC failed to condemn Pakistan sponsored terrorism. And in fact talked of “Indian terrorism”. This is highly insulting after inviting our external affairs minister as “Guest of Honour”. Ambassador Srivastava just said wait for the statement before celebrating. And yeah... we should have waited.

Looks like a wrong move by nite states of America anyway India and USA are both food surplus countries so basically involves buffering each others losses.India needs to protect itself more than just allowing their products to enter into our country.but certain products like Harley bikes or tesla cars and meat and health care products will help us in growth.
