Security Council of UN - tasked with primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace & security.
    - 15 member body out of which 5 perm members : represent post WWII realities - Balance of power.
Major power wouldn't have joined unless given some incentives - Failure of league of nations.
    India's Stand on SC:
    - First 40 yrs we did not want a membership : Non alignment policy.
    - 1993 - subsequently we put a request for permanent membership
    - India's Claim: huge population, Economy 3rd in PPP, democracy . No international org which does not have India's representation can claim to be int org.
France has emerged as a leading voice to expand the powerful global body with its envoy to UN underlining the need to place India, along with Germany and Brazil, as permanent members.
    - Issues with power sharing:
2005: Kofi Annan pushed hard for resolution but US & China lobbied very hard with African countries to drop it in General assembly.
    - Public statements are different than the resolutions: for the P5 countries. Morally, they cannot deny right but inaction in the assembly.
    - France positioning itself as a defender of multilateral order.
    - Indo-France affinity - Autonomous foreign policy like India unlike other countries (NATO & other commitments)
    - debate of Greater representation vs Less efficient.
    - Top contenders like India, Germany, Japan, Brazil - will be opposed by some countries.
Argentina vs Brazil. Pak vs India, Japan vs India
    Pros & Cons:
    - India can put its interests more powerfully
Azhar Masood - took us 10 yrs to put sanctions through UN due to one veto.
    - With greater power comes responsibility: you have to pick sides
Korea, Libya Issue - India abstained or Jamal Kashoggi murder - India then have to take stand on such contentious issues.
    - We should be seriously debating on the consequences as we get closer.
In a way there is a growing consensus for India to be there
in SC. Even, China has made a statement that a country of 1 billion population cannot be denied a seat in SC.
This itself is a testimony to rising global stature, Economy & strategic affairs of India.

The best part of the discussion was that once India becomes a permanent member of UNSC, it will have to take stands on multiple international issues which confronts around 200 countries today. India, then cannot abstain from taking a stand from important international issues, as it does today. So, India, along with making efforts for a seat in UNSC, should also focus on preparing itself for a more proactive future role.

One more thing is missing here that We have 3rd Largest Army in the world and one of the strongest Armed Forces in the World. If you see all P5 members that is one similarity of having Strong military power.
Apart from this We are largest contributor of UN Peace Keeping Forces which is more that combined of many member countries.
We are also Nuclear Power and having nuclear triad Moreover we have image of mature and peacekeeping nation.
So if we consider this strategic points then we have upper hand on Brazil, Germany, Japan.

Is India's claim really feasible ? I mean just because we have an advantage in terms of population can it be used as a measure to claim a permanent seat ?
China and India have roughly same population but China's clout in international arena is way higher than India. India is a major player in south Asia or maybe even in asia. But in asia in my opinion Japan has a better claim than India to UNSC. What are your thoughts guys ?

UN is not a cartel for the powerful to push their interest. It's purpose is global coordination and stability. India has 17% of world's people, more than 7% of world GDP which is increasing at a rapid pace and a military which is generally considered 4th best in the world.
Japan, UK and France has no reason to be there. All of them are saturated economies with declining and ageing population.

Friends it is the ultra excess population which keeps india poor by per capita income, value of living and non living things, ecology, gutlessness in foreign policy because we can never question or challenge a country as it would affect our human export (foreign workers)and fdi which we are badly require because of our wrong market policies and anti- indigenous worship. So it is the the population which not only keep this country out of unsc (permanent) but also for hardships we face first DOMESTICALLY and then internationally.

    ,Prashant Singh
It not the population growth, not A Bomb threat to any country, moreover India in 2020 & Modi & Amit Shah Government can not claim to be the premantent representative in UN.
Look at your face in mirror what you are now,Bharat,Hindustan,Ram Janam Bhumi, what you call yourself ? why you treat minorities as NRC/CAA what does it mean.Slove your internal & external problems with neiboughering countries. The present hostile situation of India can not be given any seat as permanent seat to UN.Why there is riot in India ? .They always dueal or hypocratic role from separation from 1948.Japan,Turkey,Indonesia,Germany may be conssidered as one of the position as permanent representative of UN.Not India, sorry,Time goes round comes round.Slove the problem of neiboughering countries..It will be like Donald Trump result ? Hah hah hah
