  • Quick build but so handy. Ever wondered how much longer it will take your Sparkmaker to finish that print?

I swear, this is the first RUclips video I've come across in like 20 years that has 0 dislikes.
I can understand why; this man did his darnedest to help me fix my settings issue with my Sparkmaker when I first purchased it.

I was thinking how this could be adapted for a FDM printer. Strapping a hall-effect sensor on the z-axis stepper motor would easy enough. But since the time to print each layer can vary greatly, I have a feeling any estimated time would be about as accurate as those old Windows XP progress bars...
    Estimated time: 5 minutes ... 94 days 23 hours 51 minutes ... 44 seconds... Just-moments-before-the-heat-death-of-the-universe... Done!

Haha - yes, very likely! However a lot of FDM printers have a display already and run gcode. You could write a python script to calculate the remaining time beforehand and insert M117 to print it on screen.

Hey, can you explain in two sentences , how does it work?

It 'looks' at the UV light and uses it to count the layers.
