I'm in my early 70s, and spent most of my working life in various parts of technology industries. I keep looking at your videos and marvelling at how fast the world has changed. Only in my grandfather's day, people who wanted to see the world would get a boat, just like you two did, work on it, get it ready for sea, just like you two did, and there the similarity would end. They would wave goodbye to their family and head out to sea. Their family would not hear from them until they reached the other side of the passage and could send mail. Or maybe they wouldn't hear from them at all. If the voyage went pear-shaped no one would know what happened to them, except they didnt arrive in Capetown or whever they were pointed. Now here you are, asking for technical help with your autopilot from thousands of people watching every day. It's amazing to me. and Exciting. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with us.
Brett you can use engine oil mate. Only use as much as you need and when you get to land just empty out the reservoir and replace the oil. It won’t hurt the system short term. Hope that helps stay safe guys
As the past Head of the GM Engineering Library, and contract Librarian at the US EPA National Vehicle and Fuels Emissions Laborarory Library, Brett, you want an incompressible oil that is as close in viscosity to the normally specified hydraulic oil specified for the system. Understand? Pilot you! Oil. Same SAE Spec as possible. Keep a close eye on that system. Monitor it regularly. ;-) Automatic Transmission FLUID is hydraulic fluid. Transmission OIL is lubrication oil. Hydraulic to hydraulic mix is likely the best mix.
@@DBartWesti forgot to add in to my comment about hand tighten the hydraulic pump..being it turn to tighten up which means it probably used a strap wrench for that, you can use a belt or serpentine belt you have by just wrapping around the cylinder, put pressure on it and use that to get a bit more turns to tighten the cylinder seal up. Don't go overboard to where you might crush or dent it. We don't know how thick it is. See ya on the next airing.❤
@@DBartWest It is common practice in mining industry to not use hydraulic oil (expensive) but use engine oil SAE 10, SAE 20 or SAE 30 with the lowest API rating

All three of you are awesome. Love the new stowaway you have aboard for this passage. Keep rockin
My husband, Jim, said to tell you he has used cooking oil in logging hydraulics before. Also, just a reminder that hydraulic fluid can catch fire. Oil in bottom of outboards will work, Take screw out and drain it. Love your videos. We are in Kettle Falls, Washington State.
I’ve seen plenty of industrial hydraulics that use vegetable oil (specifically peanut oil) as sop. Don’t want anything too thick. Engine oil would be fine as well.
I think it's the sound that also makes this so immersive. It's super calming and nice not having any fast cuts and music in any of this and actually just being with you all. The sound of the waves, the quiet between conversation. It makes it feel so much more real for a viewer. Just fantastic and thanks so much for the hard work going into these ❤
Engine oil or transmission fluid is your best bet If you REALLY need to top it off. (gear oil will work but is much harder to clean out of the system and hard on the pump itself) You will need to flush it clean when you get a chance but it will get you to where you need to go. As a reference I have 25 yr's as marine engineer under my belt working in the Pacific ocean and Bering sea.
I wouldn’t try vegetable oil, it has a much lower flash point and can start fire if the pump is getting hot, I agree with @revtoyota a transmission fluid would probably be your closest substitute
Maybe marine hydraulic oil is different. If you combine R&O 32 or 46 hydraulic oil with ISO 220 or 460 gear oil you are going to make a peanut butter looking emulsion. I have 30+ years in industrial maintenance experience and learned the hard way when I was young and dumb. I topped a gear box off with hydraulic fluid because I though oil was oil.
Good for Jade calling out the lack of life jacket, it is vital that no one ever feels uncomfortable doing so. It is easy to overlook, rush or just not have full awareness of your own actions and it would only takes a misstep and the consequences are serious.
I love you guys. You always make me smile and laugh. I'm a hydraulic mechanic with 25 years of experience. I'd recommend engine oil first, then whatever oil after that, starting with the thinnest first. DO NOT USE DIESEL! It will ruin the seals in the system. They're not meant for diesel or gas. I laughed so hard when Bret said he uses hydraulic oil to moisturize his skin. As I said, I was a hydraulic mechanic for 25 years. I also love to dance. On several occasions, I had women tell me that I had the softest hands of any man they had ever met. They would undoubtedly ask what I used to keep my hands so soft, especially being a mechanic. I would laugh and tell them, "I use hydraulic oil!", to their shock. They always thought I was just joking but I really wasn't. Spending 7+hours soaked in hydraulic oil will make your hands soft. However it probably isn't really good for you. Lol Well please stay safe out there. I'd like to meet you guys if you ever make it to the Texas coast.
Use the fluid that you have with the least viscosity. Hydraulic fluid is usually around a 32 weight so motor oil or transmission fluid will work, especially as a top up fluid.
Hey I love watching you guys on the sea it's nice to wake up with nothing around you and to go to bed with nothing around you but water love you guys ❤
Truly enjoying these daily crossing videos. Love all the water shots. I am retired on a fixed income; I want to thank you both for sharing all the videos with everyone, and I want to thank your patreons for doing what I can't. Thank you.

Ayanna if possible use 2 ziplock baggies, put one inside the other and fill it with ice, wrap a wash cloth or hand towel around it and apply it to your neck. You can try, acetaminophen, pain relievers, heat and a massage. Twist or wind up a towel and wrap it around your neck for support. I was in an mva & knocked over 1/10 of a mile from the point of impact, major neck damage. Good luck. 👍🙏😎✌️
I am playing catch up on your series. While listening to this recording I was listening to the ocean sounds. Realized it would be amazing to just listen to the sounds of the ocean as you're slicing through the swells. Thank you for your fantastic recording and raw footage.
GDay Brett and Jade, in a vehicle, ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid is also commonly used in Power Steering. Years ago I was informed that ATF is basically similar to water but has properties to prevent corrosion. Water does not compress. My first reaction when I just saw the issue in this video, use your reverse osmosis filtered water to top it up and resolve it when you make port. But I just noticed you found what looks like could be the main body was loose and leaking. I will continue watching, only started watching your Expedition Evans videos about a week ago. WELL DONE with what you both have accomplished so far that I have seen... The understanding that you both and Dingo and Penny have is simply amazing!
I did my first South Atlantic crossing in 1996. We were also three on board and the watch system used was five watches per 24 hour period . Three 4 hour watches during the night and two 6 hour watches during the day. That gave everybody a 12 hour day time off every 3rd day and always a different night watch period. it worked fine and there was no fatigue or sleep deprivation of any kind. I have done there after 4 more crossings of the North Atlantic under different circumstances and in different boats always with more crew and a different captain every time. It worked as well. my boat was a lot less sophisticated but did up to 186 NM in a 24 hour period. was absolutely fantastic.
Windvane would be a handy. Also be nice to have a boatwork video of the install. (Assuming there will be some boatwork videos after the crossing for the autopilot and some othermbits and bobs)
In order of preference. 1- Transmission fluid 2- Mineral oil 3- Canola oil 4- In total emergency you can use any oil, but there will be damaging consequences, but it should get you to your destination. What a great escape you three are, always enjoy your videos from the beginning, this is the best time of your lives, enjoy every minute of it. Thanks for sharing, safe travels.
So I’m normally not one to comment but I have to say how much I love your new format of videos. You both are so amazing and inspiring, Aiyana too. Sorry if I butchered the spelling.😂. Be safe and keep up the amazing work.

I've been watching your channel since episode 1, when you released it, and instantly knew it would be epic. Every video is excellent but this trip across the Atlantic is truly inspiring. The addition of Aiyana adds so much joy, as well. You couldn't script a better show!
To help with the stiff neck, rotate between ice & heat. Stretching will help a lot too, as well as trigger point massage. Which is basically finding the knot & pressing on it until it releases. Doesn’t feel the greatest in the moment but worth it.
here is a compliment - other vloggers sometimes have boat / fibreglassing problems and I and others have suggested they reach out to you - they respond they have and you both have be very helpful the latest being the couple with a loose keel - well done - enjoy the trip - fair winds and ........, etc
I don't know anything about sailing or oils but the guy who said contact manufacturer seems to have a really good idea. Also truly love the daily and raw video, and loved today's question and answer! Excited for the rest of the bread instructions. Prepping the rice tomorrow so I am ready!
I so enjoy these crossing videos. I have watched them all multiple times! Thank you for doing them for us and thank you Patreons for making this possible!
You guys are incredibly mature and knowledgeable. Very impressive. I have no sailing background (aside from sailing merit badge, Bret). But I’m really enjoying the videos! Be safe, and happy travels!!
You guys are spoiling us big time and I’m loving it! Its going to be hard when we go back to once a week videos! I just can’t believe how calm you weather is! I’m soooo happy for your safe weather! Ayanna is such a crack up! Just love your bubbly happy personality!Jade your skills on that top you made wow! Very impressed! Safe sailing looking forward to the next one!
Loving the daily uploads! The Q&A was a great surprise, I hope the weather continues to play ball, being able to virtually travel across the Atlantic with you is incredible. Loving the dynamic between the three of you, thank you so much for sharing. I have to say Aiyana is gorgeous, she has a really great personality!
I have followed you guys from day one and have enjoyed all of your videos but the last 4 days has been terrific. You could not have picked a more perfect person to go with you than Ayanna. She is so cute and funny. I look forward to the rest of the passage. Be safe.
Had the same problem with autopilot, but needed gallons of fluid. Used diesel fuel, which I had in large quantities. Worked fine, has low viscosity. After the voyage, drained, fixed and refilled. Worked just fine.
Thank you Bret, and Jade and Aiyana for these wonderful and beautiful videos. They remind me so much of when I was your age. It's such a blessing to live so close and in the midst of nature. Some of us are not able to do that anymore. Thank you so much for bringing it to us. ❤
No better ad for Starlink than your ability to upload on your crossing. One of the best safety devices - perhaps ought to be a default item for any boats making any kind of offshore passage.
Love this new raw passage with the 3 or 5 of you ..cant forget fur babies !! This is the best you tube Chanel, every day epic keep the coming we adore you guys xx❤
Trick for making potatoes, take 2-4lbs of Yukon gold potatoes put them in a pressure cooker. Not sure if a insta pot is high enough pressure but then put in 2 or 3 bulbs of garlic an an onion of your choice I use Spanish/yellow. A true pressure cooker will cook the potatoes and everything else 90% and will store for over 2 weeks because of the high temperature. The garlic will be like butter and will store for a very long time. 20-25 minutes in cooker.
Hey guys No question just a thought or two. I have been watching your channel since the beginning, love your content. Your dedication to each other, Eva and what you do is always apparent. Your issue with the Auto pilot fluid, another oil you have that could possibly work is cooking oil. In a pinch only.
“Also her watch battery”😂 love it Hey for your next Q&A can you explain your glass cockpit? You likely have a lot of non sailors, a lot of mast sight sailors, and some curious pilots. Hopefully you get a B&G or Garmin sponsorship.

Great format with daily videos at sea. We have used Hydrovane since 1983, continuing to use Hydrovane on our 2023 trans-Atlantic. It will never let you down, and it can act as a spare rudder, using no power.
Hi guys I’ve been following you since you bought the boat. Always great videos. So I love these videos Love seeing the crystal blue ocean. So my grandfather was a commercial fisherman in England. My father grew up on his boats and at 16 joined the British Navy during WW2 He was a machinist on an aircraft carrier, they got torpedoed by a German U boat and wound up in the Brooklyn ship yard for repairs. While in BY he met my mother and the rest is history. So we always had boats living on Long Island NY. He now owned his own machine shop, 150 employees in 3 shifts. I got my first boat at 13 it was a 13’ 1955 Dual cockpit Chris Craft outboard. At 18 I bought an 18’ Welcraft with a 135 outboard, fast boat At 24 my wife and I bought a 24’ Four Winns Liberator. So my plan was by now in 70 and my wife and I could cruise the world. I envy you guys, I never got the nack of sailing. So I lost my wife in 2021 ( she was only 67) to breast cancer. Back to the boats We always kept them serviced and immaculate as you guys do So your videos and othe sailors keep me connected to the sea. I love the way you three get along, and I did think she was Jades sister but obviously she is Captain Jack Sparrows daughter… lol Take her into the wind… Thanks again Jon Warman
Absolutely, I like watching "Sailing Parlay Revival" as well, it's not a competition of who is best, we aren't children who cannot get along with more than one friend at a time 🙂
What a coincidence. I've been baking blender rice bread for the last month. I miss baking bread from scratch, but not being able to digest wheat, I was ecstatic to find the recipe on RUclips. It really fulfills the craving for yeast bread. Great texture delicate crumb and toasts well. Much better than gluten free bread mixes. Short or medium grain sticky rice works the best.
fun fact! in the same time period that you sailed over to the Azores, I was in Spain on holiday, we had great weather throughout the period from 24 June to 8 July. I've only seen the episode up to and including day 4 so I'm crossing my fingers that you have good sailing weather ahead. We wish you good wind and good weather on the voyage ahead :)
You guys absolutely are smashing it! I can’t believe you’re putting out 50 minute videos every day. By the way, Jade is correct, Bret. In the middle of the Atlantic at 7 knots, you need a life jacket on when you’re on the stern. Those are the rules. I don’t make them up. Bad Bret. Hearts to you all. ❤❤❤ Hearts to the dogs ❤❤

Agree with transmission fluid. Many steering systems list ATF (automatic transmission fluid) as an acceptable substitute in case of emergencies.
Veg oil mixing with mineral oil doesn't sound a great idea.

Sorry to hear about the autopilot. Watching these videos is the highlight of my day (NOT because of your misfortunes). Thank you so much!
Thank you for making him wear his life jacket!
I love the relaxed feel of the Q&A, it feels like just hanging out with you all!
Love a comfy seat with lumbark support. ;-)
Fun and enjoyable as usual. I’m more nervous sitting here in Arizona than you all seem to be through obstacles. Keep everything rolling! 😀❤
Thanks for starting the Rice recipe, we appreciate that.
No doubt about it Ayanna has every one flying over the Rainbow.
Hey guys
No question just a thought or two. I have been watching your channel since the beginning, love your content. Your dedication to each other, Eva and what you do is always apparent.
Your issue with the Auto pilot fluid, another oil you have that could possibly work is cooking oil. In a pinch only.
9:00 cast iron pan struggles! (we only use cast ion pans fyi, they are great)
I thought that sailing miles across a vast ocean would be boring but you guys make it into an ongoing adventure, great stuff!
I just checked out your location with the predict wind link, I like the extra commentary you are writing on there! Enjoy your trip!
Love these daily videos. Thank you. We are with you all the way
“Also her watch battery”😂 love it
Hey for your next Q&A can you explain your glass cockpit? You likely have a lot of non sailors, a lot of mast sight sailors, and some curious pilots.
Hopefully you get a B&G or Garmin sponsorship.
It is a Mutual Benefit!! Good Sailors utilise Intelligence , which makes the difference!
As as Experienced Sea + Atlantic Ocean Sailor I Appreciation In Time Knowledge Which B+G have capability! Indeed, I would like to have a B+G Mutual Co Operation agreement ! Which work benefit Us Both! It is MutualCoOperation + Benefit! So B+G reach Out and We May Help Each Other on a Round The World Sailing Adventure!
I love the raw feeling of this episode. Great job. I hope Aiyanna neck heals soon. Have a safe passage and I love the daily updates.
Great format with daily videos at sea. We have used Hydrovane since 1983, continuing to use Hydrovane on our 2023 trans-Atlantic. It will never let you down, and it can act as a spare rudder, using no power.
Hi guys
I’ve been following you since you bought the boat.
Always great videos.
So I love these videos
Love seeing the crystal blue ocean.
So my grandfather was a commercial fisherman in England.
My father grew up on his boats and at 16 joined the British Navy during WW2
He was a machinist on an aircraft carrier, they got torpedoed by a German U boat and wound up in the Brooklyn ship yard for repairs.
While in BY he met my mother and the rest is history.
So we always had boats living on Long Island NY.
He now owned his own machine shop, 150 employees in 3 shifts.
I got my first boat at 13 it was a 13’ 1955 Dual cockpit Chris Craft outboard.
At 18 I bought an 18’ Welcraft with a 135 outboard, fast boat
At 24 my wife and I bought a 24’ Four Winns Liberator.
So my plan was by now in 70 and my wife and I could cruise the world.
I envy you guys, I never got the nack of sailing.
So I lost my wife in 2021 ( she was only 67) to breast cancer.
Back to the boats We always kept them serviced and immaculate as you guys do
So your videos and othe sailors keep me connected to the sea.
I love the way you three get along, and I did think she was Jades sister but obviously she is Captain Jack Sparrows daughter… lol
Take her into the wind…
Thanks again Jon Warman
Just fantastic video. So involved with your Atlantic crossing, I feel sea sick! Lol.
You can use vegetable oil or seed oil for hydraulic oil in a pinch. Or 10w20 or 30 if absolutely necessary.
I have started watching your channel and I’m so captivated by your videos. I have voted you the best looking sailing channel on RUclips 🙌👍😎
Enjoyed listening to your questions and answers session it gives insight to a different view of things and to ponder on ... 😊❤😊❤ ...
I enjoy all of the sailing channels because they are unique and have different perspectives. I would never compare one to the other.
Absolutely, I like watching "Sailing Parlay Revival" as well, it's not a competition of who is best, we aren't children who cannot get along with more than one friend at a time 🙂
Thanks for answering my questions I posted - appreciate the effort.
Hearts to the dogs ❤❤
Good catch. Jade, catching Bret-before he went on the Sugar Scoop without his vest.
