I'm in my early 70s, and spent most of my working life in various parts of technology industries. I keep looking at your videos and marvelling at how fast the world has changed. Only in my grandfather's day, people who wanted to see the world would get a boat, just like you two did, work on it, get it ready for sea, just like you two did, and there the similarity would end. They would wave goodbye to their family and head out to sea. Their family would not hear from them until they reached the other side of the passage and could send mail. Or maybe they wouldn't hear from them at all. If the voyage went pear-shaped no one would know what happened to them, except they didnt arrive in Capetown or whever they were pointed. Now here you are, asking for technical help with your autopilot from thousands of people watching every day. It's amazing to me. and Exciting. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with us.

Brett you can use engine oil mate. Only use as much as you need and when you get to land just empty out the reservoir and replace the oil. It won’t hurt the system short term. Hope that helps stay safe guys

As the past Head of the GM Engineering Library, and contract Librarian at the US EPA National Vehicle and Fuels Emissions Laborarory Library,
Brett, you want an incompressible oil that is as close in viscosity to the normally specified hydraulic oil specified for the system. Understand? Pilot you! Oil. Same SAE Spec as possible.
Keep a close eye on that system. Monitor it regularly.
      ;-)
Automatic Transmission FLUID is hydraulic fluid. Transmission OIL is lubrication oil. Hydraulic to hydraulic mix is likely the best mix.

@@DBartWesti forgot to add in to my comment about hand tighten the hydraulic pump..being it turn to tighten up which means it probably used a strap wrench for that, you can use a belt or serpentine belt you have by just wrapping around the cylinder, put pressure on it and use that to get a bit more turns to tighten the cylinder seal up. Don't go overboard to where you might crush or dent it. We don't know how thick it is. See ya on the next airing.❤

Engine oil or transmission fluid is your best bet If you REALLY need to top it off. (gear oil will work but is much harder to clean out of the system and hard on the pump itself) You will need to flush it clean when you get a chance but it will get you to where you need to go. As a reference I have 25 yr's as marine engineer under my belt working in the Pacific ocean and Bering sea.

      @Jason-fp8wn Год назад +7

I wouldn’t try vegetable oil, it has a much lower flash point and can start fire if the pump is getting hot, I agree with @revtoyota a transmission fluid would probably be your closest substitute

    • @johnmagnan759
      @johnmagnan759 Год назад +2

Maybe marine hydraulic oil is different. If you combine R&O 32 or 46 hydraulic oil with ISO 220 or 460 gear oil you are going to make a peanut butter looking emulsion. I have 30+ years in industrial maintenance experience and learned the hard way when I was young and dumb. I topped a gear box off with hydraulic fluid because I though oil was oil.

    • @jmkikkawa

I love you guys. You always make me smile and laugh. I'm a hydraulic mechanic with 25 years of experience. I'd recommend engine oil first, then whatever oil after that, starting with the thinnest first. DO NOT USE DIESEL! It will ruin the seals in the system. They're not meant for diesel or gas.
I laughed so hard when Bret said he uses hydraulic oil to moisturize his skin. As I said, I was a hydraulic mechanic for 25 years. I also love to dance. On several occasions, I had women tell me that I had the softest hands of any man they had ever met. They would undoubtedly ask what I used to keep my hands so soft, especially being a mechanic. I would laugh and tell them, "I use hydraulic oil!", to their shock. They always thought I was just joking but I really wasn't. Spending 7+hours soaked in hydraulic oil will make your hands soft. However it probably isn't really good for you. Lol
Well please stay safe out there. I'd like to meet you guys if you ever make it to the Texas coast.

    In order of preference.
    1- Transmission fluid
    2- Mineral oil
    3- Canola oil
4- In total emergency you can use any oil, but there will be damaging consequences, but it should get you to your destination.
Resort to manual steering. I have crossed the Atlantic twice with no auto pilot. It is brutal; but that's how things were done back in the days!!!

GDay Brett and Jade, in a vehicle, ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid is also commonly used in Power Steering. Years ago I was informed that ATF is basically similar to water but has properties to prevent corrosion. Water does not compress. My first reaction when I just saw the issue in this video, use your reverse osmosis filtered water to top it up and resolve it when you make port. But I just noticed you found what looks like could be the main body was loose and leaking. I will continue watching, only started watching your Expedition Evans videos about a week ago. WELL DONE with what you both have accomplished so far that I have seen... The understanding that you both and Dingo and Penny have is simply amazing!

I did my first South Atlantic crossing in 1996. We were also three on board and the watch system used was five watches per 24 hour period . Three 4 hour watches during the night and two 6 hour watches during the day. That gave everybody a 12 hour day time off every 3rd day and always a different night watch period. it worked fine and there was no fatigue or sleep deprivation of any kind. I have done there after 4 more crossings of the North Atlantic under different circumstances and in different boats always with more crew and a different captain every time. It worked as well. my boat was a lot less sophisticated but did up to 186 NM in a 24 hour period. was absolutely fantastic.

Two ideas that you’ve no doubt already thought of. Carry more spare fluids and if a system is leaking fluid don’t just top it off, check where the leak is coming from. Fair winds.

Aiyana's spirit and energy are amazing :-)! Love the marine biologist input! Plus love seeing you getting on so well and having so much fun! For Aiyana's neck - POLICE - Pain relief (Paracetamol/acetaminophen, opitmal loading - so gentle stretching - so gentle stretching, try to move it not stretching ("resting") it will make the spasm worse in the long term. Ice - probably doesn't actually do much but you can try it, compression you can't really do for necks and elevate - also happens anyway. One thing that does work but is quite painful - friction massage, find the painful part of the muscle and grind down on it with your forearm/elbow bone in circles - essentially you're stretching it, it hurts (really!) but it does relax the muscle and improves better. Enjoy! Amazing that you have swimsuit weather at the same latitude as the Titanic sank! I don't know why marine toilets don't have a lug and socket at the side opposite to the hinge to provide the seat with better stability - putting all that stress on the hinge in a seaway seems stupid!

Not sure if a insta pot is high enough pressure but then put in 2 or 3 bulbs of garlic an an onion of your choice I use Spanish/yellow. A true pressure cooker will cook the potatoes and everything else 90% and will store for over 2 weeks because of the high temperature. The garlic will be like butter and will store for a very long time. 20-25 minutes in cooker.

    Hi guys
I’ve been following you since you bought the boat.
    Always great videos.
    So I love these videos
Love seeing the crystal blue ocean.
So my grandfather was a commercial fisherman in England.
My father grew up on his boats and at 16 joined the British Navy during WW2
He was a machinist on an aircraft carrier, they got torpedoed by a German U boat and wound up in the Brooklyn ship yard for repairs.
While in BY he met my mother and the rest is history.
So we always had boats living on Long Island NY.
He now owned his own machine shop, 150 employees in 3 shifts.
I got my first boat at 13 it was a 13’ 1955 Dual cockpit Chris Craft outboard.
At 18 I bought an 18’ Welcraft with a 135 outboard, fast boat
At 24 my wife and I bought a 24’ Four Winns Liberator.
So my plan was by now in 70 and my wife and I could cruise the world.
I envy you guys, I never got the nack of sailing.
So I lost my wife in 2021 ( she was only 67) to breast cancer.
Back to the boats We always kept them serviced and immaculate as you guys do
So your videos and othe sailors keep me connected to the sea.
I love the way you three get along, and I did think she was Jades sister but obviously she is Captain Jack Sparrows daughter… lol
    Take her into the wind…
    Thanks again Jon Warman

Had the same problem with autopilot, but needed gallons of fluid. Used diesel fuel, which I had in large quantities. Worked fine, has low viscosity. After the voyage, drained, fixed and refilled. Worked just fine.

I have followed you guys from day one and have enjoyed all of your videos but the last 4 days has been terrific. You could not have picked a more perfect person to go with you than Ayanna. She is so cute and funny. I look forward to the rest of the passage. Be safe.

You can use fresh water in a pinch but you will need to flush the system when you get more fluid.

The best treatment for muscle pain is alternate of ice and heat. Use 15-20 minutes of ice and then switch it to 15-20 min of heat. Keep your neck in a neutral position where you feel no pain for 90 seconds.

Great format with daily videos at sea. We have used Hydrovane since 1983, continuing to use Hydrovane on our 2023 trans-Atlantic. It will never let you down, and it can act as a spare rudder, using no power.

Absolutely, I like watching "Sailing Parlay Revival" as well, it's not a competition of who is best, we aren't children who cannot get along with more than one friend at a time 🙂

Star Link, can you imagine your able to stay in contact with everyone like usual, and we can keep trackk of your progress over your Atlantic crossing. Just go back in time when this wasn't available, the guessing going on in the navigation, or wondering how everyone was doing. And, Miss Nutmeg learning more music for the Yuke...good job, keep it going gang.

I’ve seen cooking oil and vegetable oil be used before and they both worked just fine and it was a very heavy duty precision hydraulic system. You would need to do a full system flush and clean out once you get it fixed and new hydraulic oil. Hydraulic cylinders are designed to be taken apart (unscrews from the shaft end) so the wiper seals, piston seal, wear rings, o rings and such can be replaced so you don’t have to replace the entire cylinder. You can order rebuild kits for the cylinder and rebuild it right there on your boat giving the cylinder a much longer life as well as being cheaper.

Brett, on fishing. I started using lures that have a chrome spinner that reflects in the water even in not so clear water. We started catching so many fish that we had to make rules when we were competing with each other. Spinner baits for sure plus a sinker about two feet above the lure to get the lure deeper but you might catch bigger fish in the blue water.

What a coincidence. I've been baking blender rice bread for the last month. I miss baking bread from scratch, but not being able to digest wheat, I was ecstatic to find the recipe on RUclips. It really fulfills the craving for yeast bread. Great texture delicate crumb and toasts well. Much better than gluten free bread mixes. Short or medium grain sticky rice works the best.

You might try gear oil cut with light weight motor oil that might work in a pinch if you have transmission fluid that should work. Either way just use enough to get running again. Good luck with the rest of your crossing
