He covers British standard 5440 part 2, building regulations document j and the boiler manufactures instructions. Derek also covers the unsafe situations IGEM/G/11 to categorise the faults found on the flues

    So you could use expanding foam inside and possibly outside around the flue pipe provided you finish with a 25-35mm cement to provide the weatherproof status? Why would you direct the flue upwards with that Worcester flue as that allows direct entry for rain?

    Just to clarify if you fit a standard horizontal flue on a boiler and you fit a sealing ring on inside and outside but no screws are supplied by the manufacturer they are saying in manufactures instructions that this is OK. But then your saying gas safe want that flue sealing with sand and cement on inside and outside around flue under seals so who's right there then as I was always taught to follow manufacturers instructions that would mean it's OK without the sand cement and just the seals

    • @tomkatgastraining
      @tomkatgastraining  3 года назад

      If gas safe produce a technical bulletin it means their inspectors have found faults with appliances even though they comply with the MIs such as flues being pulled out of the appliances due to just using the seals . So we follow TBs that’s why gas safe produce them.

    • @richardelder1806

      Thanks for that clarification Derek I will order some screws to carry with me from ideal for screwing there flues together when I am installing a boiler on flats above two storey high the flue goes in from inside with no sand and cement possible on outside so relying on rubber seal against the brick work I will have to put screw there from now on what is the technical bulitan number please. Great channel Derek really helpful I have been doing gas 38 years but like pick up info from guys in the know.

    I found your video to learn more about plume management because my neighbour’s boiler plume is pointing directly into my yard where I work daily. The neighbours use the boiler very frequently all day long, so the plume is not just a visual nuisance but I’m very concerned about harming my health especially by those NOx gases and nanoparticles I’m breathing in. Also, those whiffs of gas emitted by the frequent switching on of the boiler make me feel nauseous. The neighbour has promised to see to it for months now, and keeps blaming the boiler’s age. Having seen your video, I now fear that there might be no plume kit available for his boiler. If true, then is there really no alternative solution? I cannot work elsewhere and moving house is not an option either.

    Hi Derek. Another great video (parts 1 and 2!).
    I'm a sparks by trade but want to know what the correct way is to install a new flue to a new boiler.
    I'm getting the so-called professionals in to do the job but have had different stories from different engineers who have visited to quote.
    The boiler is currently in the kitchen on the back, cavity wall of the house. The flue goes through the wall where it enters the conservatory and then has a 90 degree elbow which then has about 1.5m before exiting through a multiwall, polycarbonate sheet which is at the side of the conservatory. This was done 20 or so years ago by the guys who built the conservatory and was designed by Potterton for the situation.
    There are a number of problems such as lack of brackets, however if the main problems are corrected during the new installation, is it basically ok to have a sealed flue running through the conservatory, provided the POC and air intake exit outside in a suitably safe place?
    I will also get advice from the boiler manufacturer, once I have a specific in mind, as per your recommendations. I don't want to waste time on this if it definitely can't travel this route. One engineer said no problem, another said that condensing boilers have hotter gases now(!?) so the polycarbonate would need to be changed and the other said that the boiler should be disconnected but he would just pretend that he hadn't seen it.
    I obviously need to choose better heating companies to quote!
    I hope no-one thinks that my reference to "so-called professionals" is attempting to put heating engineers down. I think that I have just been unlucky with a couple and they are the minority. You and others like you do everything to ensure that everything is done in a safe and professional manner.
    Please keep up the good work. I have enjoyed watching your videos and learning for some time now, even though I won't ever be doing any of the work myself but at least I'll be able to ask appropriate questions of the chosen installer.

      Hi David it’s hard to comment on a job I haven’t see the main thing is how close to the combustible material it’s got to be more than 25mm away also if you are thinking of boxing the flue in you will need inspection hatches. Hopefully you will find a good engineer ( there are plenty out there) who will give you the confidence with the job in hand

    • @davidpritchard9829
      @davidpritchard9829 2 года назад +1

      @@tomkatgastraining Thanks for the very prompt response. That makes sense to me and I'll keep looking until I have the confidence in an engineer. Safety is the highest priority so I want someone who has the same priority and confidence in doing the job (and quote).
      I'm looking to local companies and recommendations now as the big internet/tv advertised companies who say "we'll get you 3 quotes" were a disappointment to me.

    Hi Derek great video, 1 question I can find an definitive answer too is are the minimum distance measurements (eg to a window) to the outside of the flue or to the exhaust part of the flue? And in the same vane how does a plume divertor affect the minimum distances?

    • @tomkatgastraining
      @tomkatgastraining  Год назад

      Plume kit reduces the measurement by 50 % but only if the air intake is a minimum of 150mm and it’s from the side of the flue to the opening

    Thanks Derek. Excellent videos. Have you done anything on the requirements of sleeves for a flue going through a timber frame wall? I'm having a new Worcester 32CDi LPG Compact Boiler installed and our property is timber frame. Does the flue need an additional stainless steel sleeve through the wall to protect against potential thermal damage to the timber frame? If so using a flexible sleeve how should it be sealed at each end?

    • @tomkatgastraining
      @tomkatgastraining  2 года назад +1

      You will need to speak to the boiler manufacturers about this issue as a lot require different things but as a general rule the flue will require a sleeve when installing in a timber frame

    Always follow manufacturers instructions. Mi's supersede all BS regs and are almost always readily available. If for some strange reason the Mi's aren't available we look to BS440. Flueing and ventilation are always pretty intensive subjects.
    I can't understand why many Rgi's get it wrong. If there's anything goes belly up. It's the installers neck on the line. I take pictures as evidence. If for whatever reason Tom, Dick or Harry decide they want to redirect the flue into the neighbor's loft. I don't want Gas safe putting out a man hunt for me. Time and time again you hear GS prosecuting gas safe members. Mostly due to them being incompetent or their negligent. The main problems I tend to find are with vertical flues. Lack of support or poor joints even incorrect fallback. Some of it outright scary. I question myself how these installers qualified 😳
    Rant over, thanks Derek hopefully your time served as an gas engineer and mass of knowledge. Has and will continue to help improve this industry 👍.
