    Actually in the Force Awakens, the Lightsabers were practically illuminated, without digital lighting in post

      The team on The Force Awakens built custom sabers with over 3,000 LEDS in each blade, which did indeed help with creating practical lighting for the effects. But the effects were still very heavily modified in post. They tracked in 3D lightsaber blades over the props, including the glow and cast light. The article on TFA in Cinefex magazine talks about the lightsabers quite a bit, if you want to get more details.

    Shooting at a lower frame rate will help speed up the fight too. Now shoot at 12 frames per second play back at 24fps for double the speed

    Dorkman is my older brother. Thank you for talking about RVD2 in this video. If you have not heard, Dorkman was involved in a very serious accident September 2014. He was hit by a car and suffered brain injuries among many other injuries. If you are a fan, and would like to have updates on his recovery, or send him a message, please visit our facebook page: Support Dorkman Scott . He has come a long way, but still has years of therapy to go. So please think about visiting the page and leaving him a message, he loves to read them. Thank you again.

      +MmeLangley Of course! We're long time fans of Dorkman in the HitFilm office and were very sad to hear about his accident in 2014. This is for sure one of the best lightsaber fan films of all time and we're wishing him all the best for his recovery!

    One more choreography tip--when I need to choreograph fights and swordfights, i like to pick a piece of music about the right speed for the fight and choreograph to that. Fight choreography is basically dancing, when you think about it, so rehearsing to the music can actually help the performers lock into the correct speed and remember the movements.
    On set you can even play the music back while filming, although this requires replacing audio in post.
    The old Mortal Kombat theme works well--it's a good tempo for a swordfight, and it's got some clear changes and a rigid structure that helps break up a fight into smaller beats. The only problem is your actors WILL want to scream "MORTAL KOMBAAAAT!"

    As of 2015.12.22 it looks like they've taken down the Ryan vs Dorkman 2 video. Which is a shame; it truly is one of the best filmed and best choreographed lightsaber battle shorts that I've seen. RvD1 is also an excellent example and a classic.

    "Art of the Saber" is what sold me on your software back when I got my first IT Job back in 2004. As their credits mentioned, I just wanted to get effects software that my only intention was, to have fun. I don't consider myself a pro filmmaker by ANY stretch of the imagination, I'm autistic, and never had many friends, but my imagination was, and is VERY active. So I purchased AlamDV 2 AND Chromanator, right after another pretty much, and bought the updated software packages when I could. And now I'm happy to say with my new IT job(that I'm on temporary layoff, I'll be ok!) that I bought Hitfilm Pro. I just wanted to say, my channel would not have been possible, if it weren't for TWO things: My younger sister giving me the push to start my Skakin Bacon Media channel thats been going strong since 2006, and..your amazing software that I still I still use to this day. “Believe that what you do matters and will make a difference in people’s lives. You don’t have to save the world in one stroke but you can make a difference one person at a time.” As always, I hope ALL of you at Fxhome make a difference in many more lives, as you ALL definitely have made a difference in mine. You brought out my creativity that I never thought possible. And for that, I will take my leave of this comment with the most 2 important words that any one should hear. Thank you.

    I really enjoy using this software and am really excited for the chance to win hitfilm 4 studio! It would be the perfect end to the year. I have just applied for film studies and media studies at college and the software would help me immensely. I absolutely love your tutorials and use them all the time. I am hoping to have a career in the film industry, mainly editing the footage. But again thank you so much to the whole team at hitfilm, I love the software, tutorials and advice you all give. Hope that I have a good chance in the competition but more importantly hope you all have a merry Christmas and a new year!

    Also, and I learned this the hard way, shoot with a relatively high shutter speed so that the practical blade doesn't get so blurry that you can't see it in post production.

    • @FXhome
      @FXhome  8 лет назад

      Good point! Although, there is a fine line there, because having the blur of the blade recorded into the footage can be very useful for seeing how much far the effect should fan out. If you shoot at a high shutter speed, and then match the effects to the blade exactly, then it can look jarring during fast movement. It is certainly preferable to be able to see the blade, as you say, but its also quite helpful to be able to see the blur of the blade, so selecting your shutter speed can be a bit of a balancing act.

    • @awecorp3501
      @awecorp3501 8 лет назад

      I agree. My point was just that you have to actually be able to see the blade, otherwise you'll have no blade or blur. I know you guys are infinitely more experienced at this than I am, I'm just pointing this out.

    How possible is it to, say, use an actual blade, perhaps plastic or such, and cover it with a distinct color such as a blue screen, then key it out and apply effects to a layer on that?
    Essentially it'd be using a green/blue screen to apply the light saber effect.

    • @FXhome
      @FXhome  8 лет назад

      +Gabe DC We'd suggest using a white stick in that instance, rather than keying out a blue screen lightsaber as it's an unnecessary move that would likely just make everything more tricky. You can get HitFilm 3 Express for free at the moment and it comes with free lightsaber effects (we cover it in a tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/xd5BdFEsPzA/видео.html)

    • @JoshuaDaviesCEO
      @JoshuaDaviesCEO 8 лет назад +1

      +Gabe DC Green or blue would work for a lightsaber which is hardly moving but once it starts moving there is tons of motion blur and it'll be impossible to key.

    Good choreography is watching old martial arts movies, with samurai and kung fu.
    What if I take a piece of green screen or blue screen wrap it around whatever saber I use instead bare wood.

    • @IsaacWolfOfficial
      @IsaacWolfOfficial 8 лет назад

      interesting. really interesting idea, actually.
      However I think you wouldn't be able to get the saber effect.
      1) it would only be one color do to another layer acting as a the active layer for the green screen.
      2) It would SUUUUUUUUCK to make the saber look good while swinging it around and mapping that.
      3) your green screen software wouldn't be able to keep up and find the green "screen".
      theoretically it would be fantabulous to achieve.

    • @FXhome
      @FXhome  8 лет назад

      +Isaac Wolf for slower movements that can work really nicely. As soon as you start swinging the blade around fast, the green prop blurs out to such an extent that you can't get a decent key from it. However, you could always use the keying approach during small motion, then switch to manual roto as soon as it starts moving fast.

    • @IsaacWolfOfficial
      @IsaacWolfOfficial 8 лет назад

      HitFilm Oh yeah, I wasn't thinking about just standing still! Brilliant.
      I'm still trying to remember how to adjust the flicker in the "2-point auto" effect so the saber looks "real"

  • @97BuckeyeNut
    @97BuckeyeNut 8 лет назад

    I've watched the other Lightsaber related tutorials your team has done for us on RUclips, but I'm still left with a question... Let's say the actor points the lightsaber towards the camera instead of keeping it flat to the plane of the video. In real life, that blade would appear slightly thicker as it got closer to the camera due to perspective (assuming a relatively close-up shot). How should I handle this perspective issues in regards to lightsabers? Thank you in advance.

    • @FXhome
      @FXhome  8 лет назад

      +97BuckeyeNut if you're using a prop blade then that should give you all the shape reference you need. What you might need to do is switch to the 4-point saber effect for that particular shot, so that you have a bit more control over the shape of the effect.

    • @97BuckeyeNut
      @97BuckeyeNut 8 лет назад

      +HitFilm Ahh... okay. I hadn't seen reference to a 4-point blade element. That makes sense. Thank you for your quick response!

    YO! The video link to Ryan vs. Dorkman 2 is down - actually the video has been taken down or made private. :-(
    *QUESTION:* Suppose a fight scene doesnt require extremes like leaping and flips - if the actors afe fluid in their movements - will it look naturally fast if one just adds a touch of speed to the video - not crazy fast, I know that would be rediculous - but just a nudge or two faster. I wouldnt want my friends (non actors) getting hurt, not being professionals and all. Thats why I ask.

    • @FXhome
      @FXhome  8 лет назад

      +ImTheDaveman You could certainly try! The things you would need to watch out for would be anything else in the scene moving additionally e.g. hair or cloaks etc. (the latter more likely if they're in costume). We've not tried it ourselves but would be interested to see if it works for you?

    • @ImTheDaveman
      @ImTheDaveman 8 лет назад

      HitFilm Thanx! I didnt consider cloak, wind blown objects, etc - stuff I should plan out. Most likely no costumes would be in use, but back drop would be important - maybe green screen and motion tracking would help for background.

    • @triem23
      @triem23 8 лет назад +1

      +ImTheDaveman One way to get a bit of an overcrank is to shoot 30 fps (with a shutter speed of 50 fps) then speed that footage up to 1.6 (if your output is 24p) or 1.66 (for 25p). This particular ratio is making certain that each frame of the original video becomes a frame at the new speed--in short, it's the smoothest speedup you can have.

      +Mr Carrot Craft we tend to use HitFilm 4 Pro when we're producing content, unless we're recording a tutorial specifically for Express.

    I recently downloaded HitFilm 3 Express, and every time I import a video it says that the video is not supported, I shot it on a Canon EOS Rebel T3i. Please help.

      +VavTheRav what format is the video in? Canon DSLR video should work fine.

      I have the same camera, and had this issue.
      The problem was fixed when I discovered my computer's QuickTime was not in it's latest version. Hitfilm runs on QuickTime (? 95% sure haha) so check that out first.

      HitFilm I shot it on a .MOV file; I installed QuickTime 7, but that didn't work either

      +Isaac Wolf On Windows, HitFilm uses Quicktime for MOV files. It doesn't use it for anything else.
