I was lucky enough to watch this live, the atmosphere was incredible as always, Aussies do it different, De Minaur was on fire!
Same, what a game!
Congrats. Best possibel start to a new year
Incredible match! Nadal showed some magic in the first set, but as basically everybody in the comments is saying, his body physically couldn't keep up. I've not seen this level of pace on De Minaur's groundstrokes since Barcelona against Alcaraz; if he hit his groundstrokes and returns like this in every match he plays, he could be a serious threat.
Not in Slams he can’t over 5 sets. They can ‘redline’ it fof 2 sets
No because the intensity of Rafa's forehand has reduced. Also he hasn't changed anything in his game for the fast hard court matches and not playing from the baseline would not help him winning against these already established youngsters.
De Minaur seems to redline playing for his country. Unfortunately he doesn’t play like this at other events
@@yussepig6629 yeah is very hard to keep the same level in best of 5, thats why is so hard to beat Rafa in slams
He’s coming out of his shoes to do it. I think when you measure his weight, you’ll find his power meter is maxxed out. Besides, it was great placement and surprise that made many of those winners. Rafa is trying to save himself to go deep at the Australian Open. He has that goal in mind. This is a warmup for him. He’ll take losses in stride during this period.
On any given day, Rafa can beat 60-70% of ranked players on muscle memory alone...I watched this live and saw Rafa pull shot after shot from his greatest hits collection. But as with Cam Norrie, Rafa is just getting outgunned by the speed and power of these younger players. De Minaur just kept firing rocket-like forehands at him and he couldn't do anything about it. De Minaur seems like a well mannered and talented player with a good future ahead.
Not good enough though for reaching big achievments .. due to his height(also)
@@airkuna bro what are you saying 😅
Yeah, Nadal has definitely lost a step or two..
@@airkuna HES SAME HEIGHT AS NADAL.HEIGHT DOESN'T MATTER. MICHAEL CHANG, ANDRE AGASSI, BORIS BECKER, BJORN BORG ETC. WASN'T THAT TALL. ITS THE SKILL & ATTITUDE THAT COUNTS.
Yeah I read that 'de Minaur had beaten a depleted Rafa' and expected to see something a lot less competitive. This is a huge win for him
De Minaur, wtf, what a game, what a shots, unbelievable
De Minaur activated his inner Djokovic mid-match, lol, what a monster! Bravo!
Rafa played with flu
@@chocosquirrel3319 how's that copium?
@@chocosquirrel3319 With Norrie he had flu too? What about Paris masters Tommy Paul? What about Fritz and Felix atp finals? All the time he had flu? Why is he playing exhibitions in South America when he has flu? Does he want to infect others with his flu too?
@@chocosquirrel3319 , was his foot all right?
@@chocosquirrel3319 Ah, did not know! At any rate, it's not like Rafa was playing bad, De Minaur was really going at it!
It reminds me their epic match at ATP Cup in 2020
Alex has never moved so well, hit with such power, clarity and accuracy, and never played with such self belief. That's what it takes to defeat a legend.
What a wild crowd 🥳🤣 always great to watch Rafa play 💙
Amazing performance from De Minaur.
Congratulations ALEX...you are the best on the Australian team.
You are a gentleman and play a very fair game without any nonense.
You have a wonderful future ahead of you.
VERY well done.
Fantastic game.🇦🇺
This was the ATP Cup / United Cup rematch we were waiting for. It only took 3 years in the making, but wow, it's like they picked up where they left off. It did not disappoint.
De Minaur has the running skills like Rafa had in his early years. That said he's been able to overcome every dangerous opponent.....
We have to accept that when players gets old their explosive movement is gone. Nadal is trying to adjust so you can see him trying to end every point fast, where as in the past, he would just be content to put the ball in play daring anyone to try to hit ball good enough to get a winner on him. It was so hard to get a winner on Nadal in his prime. Anyways I will never count Nadal out on clay, but other slam is hard to believe he can win.
I don’t think this is Nadal’s new movement. He can’t have slowed down this much in such a short time. He looked so much quicker at Wimbledon or even at the end of the season when he wasn’t playing well. He did this early last season too. I think he’ll move faster for the grand slams and give it his all. But if this is his new speed, I don’t think he can possibly win any slam, even RG. He looks slower than anyone else in the top 15-20 right now
@@SJ-di5zu Could not be earlier in the season, but injured or not, Nadal seems unable to keep his stamina at high levels beyond a first set. The shots are all there, but the insane court coverage is gone. Perhaps he is trying not to re-injure his ab before the AO by playing more conservatively, but if he's not holding back, this level of movement won't win him his 15th RG. He could potentially retire at RG if that's the case. AO will be a better showcase of what Rafa has left in the tank.
Rafa wins the AO, French and defaults a semi in e Wimbledon and you don’t think he can win?
Estos jóvenes cada vez más atlético,no basta con talento solamente..
Alex is like a tempest all over the court.
Sensational tennis. De Minaur was unbelievable ⚡⚡⚡⚡
Rafa “Count my perseverance & not my losses”
Please share extended highlights! Thanks and happy new year.
Congratulations Mr. De Minaur, you played fantastic!!
Amazing Tennis!
Increíble es como pasa el tiempo, te vamos a extrañar Rafa!!!!.. no acostumbro verlo perder, siempre serás un campeón..
el retiro le viene
This was a very high quality match, judging from the highlights. Rafa is improving every match and i KNOW we'll see the best of Rafa at the AO
From these highlights alone, it looks like Rafa's really dialed in the backhand quite well and is getting some very good power off both wings. Hopefully a few more matches help him tighten up his game a bit more. He's also played some pretty good players right off the bat in Norrie and De Minaur and both losses were close.
Exactly! He needs reps. Fitness is critical too. This will help him for sure. I tell you I would be nervous if I was top 4 seeds that I would draw Djokovic in the quarters. It could be a nadal-djokovic quarter like the French last year.
His forehand is just too loopy too much spin the backhand is great
Yep, and then he won the AO a month later. Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome and well deserved win for Alex! Happy freakin New Year!🥳
I wish Amex had the same internal fortitude outside of Sydney as he does when he plays in Sydney. He looks like he owns the place in Sydney but he's usually q a lot more timid everywhere else.
Surprising considering he spends most of the year practicing and living in Spain.
Amazing highlights!!
Great match by De Minaur!
But after watching Tennis for the last 15+ years & especially after the 2022 season, I strongly believe history will just repeat itself. I see these players beating Rafa & Djokovic in these pre-Grand Slam matches. But these players will only face the same outcome as always to the same Rafa & Djokovic in the Grand Slams! This has happened many times before and I will not be surprised when I see it happen again this year.
That is the greatness of the Big 3 or Big 2 since Fed's retirement.
Alex outwheeled Nadal.
He is 13 years younger, so not surprising.
What a game of tennis! WOW!
What a MONSTER!
The crowd sounds amazing.
What a match, some brutal shots from nadal like old times. De Minaur on fire too played so good
Tennis on highest Level. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing points
Goodness gracious!! Epic match.
Watching tennis for 50 years, never seen something similar to De Minaur's speed! I think with his legs i would be Number 300 in ATP!
Is Alcatraz faster?
@@kesun32145 Alcatraz Is on a different level but i think Alex Is fastee
Rafa in 2005 was very very fast too. Look these matches
@@kesun32145 I think in terms of foot speed the absolute fastest are maybe monfils at his peak and de minaur. Djokovic, Alcaraz and peak nadal are almost as fast but the three are "quicker" - meaning better at anticipation, changing directions, etc.
Don't forget Roger and Stan the Swiss guys could glide with the best even Andy can be quick when u see epic rallies they all play likewise over 5sets to a thrilling match over the years.U could say alot with the Greats that can move quick in the history of Tennis
1:29 what a point, well done Demon
What a match, great tennis
@1:30 what a point from De Minaur. Probably the fatest player in tennis these days.
He's not fat at all! He's actually quite thin...
@@danguee1 he meant fastest
what a match !! 😮
Amazing match by these two
Wow, how exciting to watch De Minaur play, he's got everything!
he plays such good in one match, then he loses in the next one. That is shame! He should learn consistency as Ruud and Tsitsipas did last year
...he's been served! Congrats Alex!!! 👌❤️💯👏
oh no rafa 🥺 i really hope he improves before clay
I believe he will. He is looking so much better than the last few months of 2022.
HE will improve before Australian Open. Like last year
@@grbe2392 Doesn't matter, cause he ain't winning AO 2023.
@@natoskull2 He will win
@@grbe2392 Nah. Nadalito won't win. If you do believe that he will, please dare to make a bet about it.
All good things must come to end. As I previously said, 2022 was Nadal's last hurrah and he is done winning slams.
🤡
Clowns like you were saying this since 2015....
I think Nadal could still be a major threat to most players on tour, but I don't think he'll find much success against top players.
Djokovic will not win a slam either in 2023
Enjoy with friends and family 👍🙏☺️
@@Phurngirathaana Novak will end this year at 25 slams.
These types of matches will get Nadal back to his prime level soon. So if you’re Nadal’s fan, don’t be disappointed but look forward to this as the next chapter, could be titled as:
The Rise of Nadal in the Open Era 😅
I surely do hope so! Coz,I just love watching this man👌🏽
Wow impressive
De minaur and nadal are both one of those players that inspire me to play tennis
Nice to see the youngsters have so much respect for Rafa!
Reminds me of their battle in 2020
Nadal still has the epic quality but now there are so many players who can beat him any given day.
Not at a grand slam though. That takes someone like Djokovic. He was 19-0 last year and defaulted sadly. I’m best of 5, he’s a beast. Let’s see if he has some more magic left.
This match is the best so far this year‼️ They both are my favourite players, and this match is so good!! I love Alex’s play style! He never gives up💪
it’s sad that Rafa has lost twice in the row btw😢
best of the best
Only two days in this year 😂😂
just the second day of the year 🤣
Rafa lost the 1st 2 matches last year.
nice Match
Unreal
Hope thes matches are blessing in disguise for Nadal. He and his team have more than ten days to rectify
the unforced errors,improving his
serve ,conversion of break points,
And above all match fitness.Also
best of five in grand slams suits Nadal game.He will be a different
beast at A.O. Even today's match
against demeanor Nadals game
was patchy end of first set Nadal
played great. Even in starting of
first set Nadal broke demeanor in the first game.Later Nadal was notable to hold his serve.Nadal was
more passive.This gave demeanor
to lift his game.Third set both had their chance.Nadal is just short of
match fitness.I am sure if Nadal
is able to lift his game to a higher
Level.He will lift his 3 Rd A.O.
Nadal our ultimate warrior you
can only win when people write you
off.
I think physically he is not there on hard courts anymore. Clay, he will still dominate.
@@krutarthparikh4366he doesn’t even dominate clay anymore last year French open was only clay tournament he won. It hasn’t been since 2018 I believe that he won 3+ titles on clay.
De minaur is amazing ! Dude's a beast
2:43 Such an epic point!
looks like another legend is not far away from the end of his career.
The end is near Nadass does it his way.👾👾👾👽👾👾👾
This outfit combination came nadala cursed. He lost almost all the matches he played with this combination.
The wet dream of any sponsor and tournament. Have the home hero fight an epic battle against a legend and win.
Wow Rafa does look really slow right now. He’s letting so many balls go. I refuse to believe he slowed down this much in just a few months though. I think he’s conserving himself.
But if it is coming close to the end then I’m just glad to see him playing some epic matches. That fight back in the third set gave me chills. He was clearly being outplayed after the first set but he turned it around with some trademark Rafa intensity.
Give injection he definitely move fast
@@gokulvrindavan1858 before people say you're salty, Nadal himself admitted to multiple injections. He used them to numb his foot in FO which is actually unfair because his durability and stamina was raised beyond his average level
@@kakashihatake1029 The injections were perfectly legal and for pain numbing, so there’s nothing unfair about it. No proof his stamina was raised and again, they’re legal by tennis standards. So you really have no grounds to complain. Isn’t it easier to just enjoy watching a legend keep playing?
@@kakashihatake1029 Do you really think anyone would choose numbness in a foot to get stamina? Numbness may increase stamina, but of course it is detrimental to other parts of the game, not the least an increased risk of injuries.
@@gokulvrindavan1858 i love Nadal but at least when he retires I won’t have to bear those comments based on no evidence other than a big left arm
Wow!
The end is near.
Speed Demon!
This is start of the end
Djoker is AO's King
Okay, so that looked like an incredible match, that came down to the last set. All the people saying Rafa is finished against these young players… seriously. Yes he’s getting older, and isn’t as athletic as he was in his prime. But who thought he’d win AO last year, and another French?
Say it when he doesn’t make the quarters of any major this year. Then we can say he’s past it.
Rafa just getting warmed up--Vamos!
Age is catching up to Rafa. He always starts out strong, but can't maintain that level of intensity as the game goes on. Maybe it's too early to say bc it's a new year and some players need more time to get back into the norm of things, but all I can say is a healthy Nadal is better than an injured Nadal. We will see if things will get better for him. If he keeps on playing like this and can't win any titles, especially majors, then I think he will retire next year or year after that. I hope he can play forever bc he is such a fun watch even if he loses in the end, but even as a Nadal fan, I know the end is near, so I will treasure all the game he plays from now on and will continue to cheer for him. Vamos, Rafa!
I mean if you need to write an essay to conclude that a healthy player is better than an injured one, I'd get back to the drawing board mate. In all seriousness though, Nadal won two friggin' Grand Slams last year and didn't reach the finals of a 3rd because of an injury which is very much still bothering him. He is arguably the greatest player of all time bar Djokovic and he could win slams with his arm tied to his back even at 36 (he is turning 37 in May). Do not count Nadal (nor Djokovic) out EVER.
He has to be the fastest player on tour, remarkable scrambling.
De Minaur is arguably the best runner and court coverer on tour, delight to watch, but lacks the steady finishing shots and at clutch moments like Alcaraz from this generation, Novak and Nadal are clearly perfect combination of high class court coverage and controled strikes
Primo set allucinante! Poi la benzina finisce..
"Losing is not my enemy... Fear of losing is my enemy" / Raphael Nadal
Is that why Rafa avoids Novak at all non clay tournaments in the last 4 years (especially since 2019 Australian Open final)? Every time there is a possibility that the two meet on hard courts or grass, Nadal is injured. And vice versa.
What’s with the “ph”
Well, what's the injury this time? 🤣
what was the injury this time?
Awesome Alex!
WOW
What a match! Two great players!
Every player ever just pulls something out their ass every time they play Nadal now
The strut on Nadal settle down big sexy
When the Demon plays in OZ he is on fiiiiire !!! too bad in a GS format he does not keep up this pace...
Rafa is reaching legend status: rooting for him to win in every match!
reaching????
His record over the last two months is pretty bad.
@@tombarca100 and would expect more from a guy who just came back from injury?
You should rooting while you can because every next one may be his last, this is not for him anymore...
Reaching?? 💀 22 gs makes you a legend I’d hope
Sad to see Rafa fade away piece by piece
This might be nadal s last year of tennis... maybe going to see him play one last time in paris!
엄청나군요~~
Rafa looked better than against Norrie. He definitely had higher peaks, but he needs more consistency. He's now 4-7 in his last 11 matches, dating back to Cincinnati

Super Alex
Incredible play from both of them. Nadal played well, but Alex played unreal Tennis 🎾 at times, particularly with his movements. Nobody moves better than him. Alex is a Dark-Horse for AO!!
Alex is not 💀 he plays 2 good matches a yr not enough to win more than a few rds at a slam
I was being tongue-in-cheek! Alex wont win AO! Lol 🤣
Надаль играет здорово, но на весь матч его уже не хватает
LOL @ "jesus" 1:03
Which injury did Nadal blame for this loss?
What a running beast that minotaur is!! Guess he got a lot of extra energy through the audience. But think Nadal wins next time they meet.
The footwork is not quite yet for Rafa, this limitation prevents him from moving forward with his forehand and struggling with cross-court backhand shots from the opponent. The need to slice the ball so much to slow down the pace is not a good sign either. De Minaur figured this out pretty well after the first set; his cross court backhand was a powerful weapon.
I feel Rafa if he can should change something in his game if he wants to dominate hard courts against these established youngsters. He surely has become slow and intensity is not there. Also he is still not playing from the baseline and not taking the ball early. Now everyone has decoded his game. If he continues to play like this then I think winning something on hard courts is not possible.🥺
Here is the man who won AO last year. What a shame it was a sham. 👾👾👾👽👾👾👾
Rafa is already done. He should stay home and watch 😀tennis on his tv.
I've got a feeling Nadal will be having his retirement celebration at The French Open this year.
Probably depends if Djokovic wins AO.
NADAL'S PASSING DROPSHOTS ON THE NET IS SUPERB.UNPLAYABLE.
De Minaur is one of the VERY FEW players who still use an eastern grip. With his height he can get away with it.
