loved Ninja, Golvelius, Cloud Master, Lord of the Sword, Miracle Warriors, Mystic Warrior, Zillion, Wonder Boy and others. So many great Master System games.
You nailed so many great games in your list! Zillion, miracle Warriors.... those were some of my faves too! Golvelius seemed to have exceptional graphics to me. It stood out. But it was hard for me to master.
I loved Spellcaster, it is a very unique experience. However, I will say that the password system was just so much crap. I remember it as being thirty characters long, some of them not being true letters or numbers. I recommend if you're going to be playing the cartridge, to forget writing down those passwords and use your phone to take a clear snapshot of the passwords.
personally, Spellcaster has a shot as being the best game on the SNES. it combines RPG and action perfectly, the story is very interesting, the graphics and music awesome
I grew up with Sega Master System as well. My best friend had a NES, so I decided to go with the almighty SMS. Wanted something different we could play while at my house, not to mention Sega appealed to me more. Instantly became a Sega fanboy. Rastan, Shinobi, Reggie Jackson Baseball, Rocky, Pro Wrestling, Evander Holyfield Boxing, Space Harrier 3D, Phantasy Star, and many more bring back great memories.
Well done and I appreciate the great picture quality and the FM sound tracks! Even though I am here in the States, I too had a Master System instead of a NES and I LOVED IT! The hardware was amazing and I even had Sega Scope 3D and back in the day games like Maze Hunter 3D and Missile Defence 3D blew my mind! I am glad people are now starting to appreciate the Master System more as a retro console. You gave me more games to add to my list. I also really appreciated how many games that were made for both the Mega Drive/Genesis and Master Systems were actually different games rather than ports. Again, well done!
Man, my cousins and I had a Master System, and we played Phantasy Star for many, many years without beating it. We had save slots far into the game, but we were so young we didnt fully grasp what had to be done to beat it. Eventually the Master System was relocated to a family vacation house on a lake in the middle of nowhere. Every year, we would return and play our save files. We started playing this game when I was 6 years old, and I would guess it took 7 or 8 years to see the end. Most nostalgic game for me by far.
RoastMcGhost I was also too young to finish it. I remember my space ship being in one planet while I was lost in another. Had no idea how to deal with that situation. That was the end of the game for me I think.
I have a 1990 Master System which comes with Alex Kidd in Miracle World (which has also had its date changed from 1986 to 1990); the earlier models had Snail Maze.
Does anyone else hear an emphasis on final words in sentences that sound like there is more to be said but then isn't. It sounds like confusion or a spontaneously read book report. Not to knock it by any means! To be clear, I love the content and I think the material is pretty well-written.
I know what you're talking about, I think it's just his Wolverhampton accent. He also sometimes finishes sentences as if he's asking a question, with an upward inflection.
The world needed more zelda clones anyway. Once a zelda fan was done with LoZ where were they to turn for more? I wanted more LoZ for years and GAw was the only game that delivered.
Good list. Some titles I'd include: - Robocop vs The Terminator (the SMS version is surprisingly good) - Ninja Gaiden - Mortal Kombat - Secret Command - Time Soldiers - Scrambled Spirits - Double Hawk - Super Space Invaders - Quartet - Columns
Not all SMS2's had Alex Kidd built in, there was a variant with Sonic 1 built in instead. Glad to see R-Type in there, the SMS port of this was probably the best on any system. You must be the only SMS owner to have never played Sonic, it was so popular for good reason! And I had forgotten how much fun Asterix was, thanks for that.
I bought a Master System in 1987. Being an American with SMS while the rest of the country had the NES (I had both as I was 17 at the time and had a job) was frustrating as there weren't too many friends I could share the experience with. Black Belt, Quartet, Choplifter, Phantasy Star, and Shinobi were my absolute favorites. Nice vid man.
Sadly ennemy placements are somewhat very tricky (to not say poorly thought) + the insane respawn + the bad jump plateforms... those can ruin the game.
I love 13 of your 18 games. Thanks for not forgetting Psycho Fox. One of the best games ever. I would have ranked Out Run higher though. I remember going to a shop and seeing it and dreaming to have it for months. I was uncontrollable when I finally had it!!!
Aliens Infestation review you say? Oh, you mean the first video I watched from you, and the reason I discovered your criminally underrated channel. Great vid(the Aliens one, Im still watching this one lol)
stringanime SEGA Master System is the eutopia of nostalgia idc what anyone says about Nintendo. im here in the States from Boston and I loved my Sega Master System and still Own it
Same could be said about the high quality arcade games that came out back in the 80's. If one never experienced Donkey Kong in the Arcades, and instead only played the NES port, one might prefer the off version of the NES. When I think of 8 Bit, regardless to the NES being part of the 80's, I think of Happy sounding Chip tune and bright pixelated colorful graphics, but that is because 1. I prefer that quality and 2. I played a lot of consoles and arcades back then.
It's a nostalgic thing brother, and the controller aint so bad. Although i must admit i had some issues with it some time ago (stupid D pad) And afcourse that pausebutton not being on the controller sucks ass. But Sms is still a nice system. I actually like it a bit better then the Nes, but i still think that is personal. I am not gonna argue wich one is better, cause why should i, i have both and i don't own shares in Nintendo or Sega.
Great video and a lot of really cool games on here! Though I would also add Astro Warrior and Pit Fall to this list as I would play those games non stop all of the time!
It seems, that most of the best games for Master System, have even better versions on Mega Drive. I'm interested in the console, but as I already have a Mega Drive, is there any sense to get one (or Master System converter)?
My childhood Sega Master System had Super Hang On built in, cannot recall what year it was released. What about Astro Warrior? I think my copy had Pit Pot on the same cartridge. Nice video, cheers.
Psycho Fox did get a 16-bit / Mega Drive update of sorts though - two of them: Magical Flying Hat Turbo Adventure and its reskin for the west DEcap Attack. Psycho Fox itself was a remake of NES game Kid Kool and all were made by the same team at Vic Tokai.
0:46 - Sorry, the NES Classic is not a "repackaged Ouya". It's closest to perhaps an Orange Pi board (it uses an Allwinner chip) and people have already hacked it. I think I read that you can put more games on it. You'll have to check though.
Then I'd say we grew up no where near each other, we had 1 bus, 1 arcade machine and an oddly large amount of imitation hand held dot matrix games in our local news agents.
@@FullInstall Yeah, I can tell from your accent lol. I was born in the Midlands but grew up in Kent. It's just cos you said they weren't common in Britain.
Golden Axe Warrior is my favorite Master System game. Then the original Alex Kidd in Miracle World, the first Sonic, Castle of Illusion, Phantasy Star, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, Donald Duck in the Lucky Dime Caper, Zillion and many more. It was truly a Master piece of gaming fun and made me a gamer forever.
Nice/useful video! I'm about to get a SMS and certainly like most of the ones you showed. I loved Aladdin on the Genesis so I'm curious about that sms version... looks like an entirely different experience.
I was waiting for Phantasy Star to get it's Glory in your list and it did! It was my favorite game back in the day and I also replayed it several years ago on an old computer. I also remember playing Book of Y's. Haven't played it since I was little, but I remember having fun with it.
When I was a kid here in the US I always loved the SMS more than the NES.... Problem..... No one else I knew owned so game trading and 2 player games were out of the question.
BIGRAYSWRESTLINGSHOW I second your emotion lol I'm here in Boston and still love my Sega Master System!! problem is everyone around me knows nothing about great 8 bit gaming🎮🎮💯💯
Robbie RuPac Radio So very underrated. I actually choose the SMS over the NES. I didn't have an NES til 89... Anyways love your work brother. Look me up at 1wrestlingvideo if you wish. Peace friend
4:42 - my neighbor had that game and at the end of each stage you had to fight that same witch.... by the time I got a sega master system you couldn't find games for it anywhere. it was such a failure that all the games just disappeared.
Is that how your pronouncing Shinobe? FYI Psycho Fox got a 16 bit release in Decap Attack (basically). Populous and Penguin Land are fun games too. Also Micro Machines.
I agree actually I never got the original Alex Kidd, thought everything on it was too over-sized. The one I had other than Shinobi World was In High Tech world, which it is pretty well known wasn't originally supposed to be an Alex Kidd game, I believe it is some sort of Manga over in Japan but they put AK to it to try and make it more appealing. ..he is also the best racers in Sonic all star racing transformed!
I just checkout out SASRT... that is one strange title. They have included A football manager as a character. A bloke in a suit who doesn't move, because, well, Football Manager is a game and it has a football manager in it (if you consider yourself, the player, to be actually in the game), right? Hmmmmm to SASRT.
It is an odd one all round, especially if you have the PC version where you can play as the Russian tank commander, I like that it doesn't take itself too seriously though, it didn't bore me like Mario Kart did.
Loved this. The Master System 2 was my first console, when I was around 8 years old. I'm dead chuffed you included Alien 3. Easily my favourite title on the Master System.
The master system has two faces. The pre 90s sega, with its games also being released in the States and the post Europe & Brazil modern era. There are gems to be had from both periods and many of my American pals here, are missing so many essentials never released here in the US..
I always thought it bizarre that the Master System had such a big fan base in Brazil apposed to the US, are there any titles that stand out for you as not being released over your way? I can't say I have a huge knowledge base of what was released where.
I don't think I ever played the master system version you know, I played through the sequel on the PC engine emulator back when the emulator scene first came around in the dial up days, cracking game.
Maravilhosos tempos!
hi thanks for the video,i have one question can u plz tell me the name of the game in the minute 1:23??the war plane game..i used to play it but i dont know the name...thank you
One of the very few occasions that i can say i was happy to live in Brazil. This is the country where Master System truly dominated, to the point where units are STILL made to this day, as well and hundreds of exclusive titles. Also, it made getting all 3 models very easy for me. :D
SEGA should do a Master System collection, just like they do with Genesis. I know MS is much less popular, but it would be a great introduction for new players.
Although there was never a psycho fox on the Megadrive, there were two games which were virtually identical save for the graphics. The first was Magical Flying Hat Turbo Adventure (only released in Japan) and the second (and best of the lot) was Decapattack.
dang... the bg scrolling effect (11:19 - 11:21) in aladin is really close to the tricks they used in toy story and clockwork knights. merp, and wow... spy vs spy made your list? so simple, but i loved that game so much as a kid... mad magazine was edgy af when i was young, so i'd probably have bought any game with their branding. ...phantasy star... YESSSSS!!! and apparently i need to play alex kidd in shinobi world. =P off the topic... you mentioned liking games that make the character seems shrunken? world of padman is a cool pc game based on quake 3's engine that's really fun, free to play, and the level design is extremely good... =D great video btw, really liked it. =P
I thought you were going to put Alex Kidd in miracle world in the first place, but you didn't, lol. I remember buying a master system, I was 7 years old, and Alex Kidd was the first game I played! I have to say I really freaked out playing that game. I also enjoyed playing Spider-Man vs the Kingpin and Master of Darkness ... These are the games that are missing in your list, from my humble point of view. Thanks for the video, it's a great one indeed.
Batman Returns was Sega's answer to Bionic Commando which was because of Nintendo's bullshit policies about "if you develop games for our system, it can be the ONLY system you can develop for" I mean imagine how awesome it would be to have had Contra, Metal Gear, Mega Man, Bionic Commando, Star Tropics, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Blaster Master, or even Little Samson on the Master System with way more advanced graphics???
legorulez49 Yeah. Funny how Nintendo tried to have these crippling policies , trying to dwindle their competition, and now they're the ones hanging on by a thread in the console business. karma.
Lamento no estar contigo en casi ningun puesto... ¿Alex Kidd in Miracle World no es mejor que Shinobi World? ¿Y donde estan los dos primeros Sonic the hedgeog?
I have 2 master system consoles. One has Snails built in the other has Missle Defense 3D. Loved the 3d glasses, mine still work, very hard to find a working pair.
Master System's Choplifter is my favorite version.
Seeing Asterix on here really made my day.
Ahhh takes me back, I grew up in the mid 80s, after spectrum this was my fave platform to play on in my early years of gaming.
Great video.
loved Ninja, Golvelius, Cloud Master, Lord of the Sword, Miracle Warriors, Mystic Warrior, Zillion, Wonder Boy and others. So many great Master System games.
You nailed so many great games in your list! Zillion, miracle Warriors.... those were some of my faves too! Golvelius seemed to have exceptional graphics to me. It stood out. But it was hard for me to master.
Lord of the sword was my all time favorite.
Spellcaster, almost unknown but an excellent action/rpg game with awesome graphics for a 8 bits console.
Just looked it up, actually looks fantastic, cheap on eBay, ordered a copy - well done sir.
you gonna have some fun mate ! :)
I loved Spellcaster, it is a very unique experience. However, I will say that the password system was just so much crap. I remember it as being thirty characters long, some of them not being true letters or numbers. Played the shit out of Spellcaster. Awesome game.
personally, Spellcaster has a shot as being the best game on the SNES. it combines RPG and action perfectly, the story is very interesting, the graphics and music awesome
You totally need to check out the Master System port of Road Rash, its so impressive you could easily mistake it for the Mega Drive one.
I swear you keep popping up, this is like the 5th video I've seen a random comment from you xD. You're EVERYWHERE.
I grew up with Sega Master System as well. My best friend had a NES, so I decided to go with the almighty SMS. in Brazil there is a Master System kind of NES Mini with 120 games included
Hernán Matias please send me one here to mexico
Wonder Boy in Monster Land was the one. Great video BTW! almost pinpoint accurate
Rodney Howells Absolutely☝️☝️
Monster Land is correct.
Agreed
Wonderboy 3 better though
Yes! Spent hours and hours playing this game as a kid 😁👍
this was the time when gaming was chilling, a game took weeks an you had fun with your friends on one console
Already know this video is going to be class because of the Phantasy Star 4 music. My man!
I'm highly impressed that you chose Shinobi World as #1! Although at least one of the Power Strike games needs to be here.
Man, my cousins and I had a Master System, and we played Phantasy Star for many, many years without beating it. We had save slots far into the game, but we were so young we didnt fully grasp what had to be done to beat it.

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World! I seriously thought I was the only person who knew about that game. Definitely my favorite
I have a 1990 Master System which comes with Alex Kidd in Miracle World (which has also had its date changed from 1986 to 1990); the earlier models had Snail Maze.
Stephan Dolby mine too! Thats the first game that comes to my mind when talking about the Master System
So did mine.
and Hang on, a nice motorcycle game.

It’s called the antipodean inflection. Or high rising terminal
Golden axe Warrior is a great game so what if it is a zelda clone still a real gem on the master system
True. *Golden Axe Warrior* should be high every Master System list.
It's an awesome RPG.
Super expensive now
The world needed more zelda clones anyway. Once a zelda fan was done with LoZ where were they to turn for more? I wanted more LoZ for years and GAw was the only game that delivered.
Sega master system don't need zelda sega have yz,miracle warriors, phantasy star .whit that 3 games i real forget zelda.
I loved Shinobi back in the day (and it looks way better on the SMS than the NES). Never finished it though...
That was my number one. Finished it multiple times as did my brother.
I got it to the last level.
who remembers time soldiers? for saga master system
I didn't think I did until I looked it up, I think I may have rented it though I might be getting mixed up with Mercs
Still got my copy
arcade version was so much better
Alex Kid in SHinobi world is also my fav game on the console. 2nd stage music is so beautyfull
Master of Darkness is one of the most underrated games.
the Sonic series, World Cup Italia 90, Submarine attack, Forgotten worlds, golden axe warrior, rescue mission...
I kick myself for leaving off Forgotten Worlds.
Zillion was my favorite. Good list.
Good list. Some titles I'd include:
- Robocop vs The Terminator (the SMS version is surprisingly good)
- Ninja Gaiden
- Mortal Kombat
- Secret Command
- Time Soldiers
- Scrambled Spirits
- Double Hawk
- Super Space Invaders
- Quartet
- Columns
No Rastan? Loved that game
damn forgot about rastan good mention
Godzilla 73 loved rastan
the released an updated arcade version about a year ago on xbox live. uldric the barbarian or something
You know I only ever played the second one on a PC Engine emulator, I have fond memories of it though.
Graeme Robson are you talking about that volgar viking game? It was released on Dreamcast too. Pretty cool
I have the Game Gear version of that.
Why does youtube always recommended videos from the UK to me?
Not all SMS2's had Alex Kidd built in, there was a variant with Sonic 1 built in instead.
Glad to see R-Type in there, the SMS port of this was probably the best on any system.
You must be the only SMS owner to have never played Sonic, it was so popular for good reason! And I had forgotten how much fun Asterix was, thanks for that.
Don't get me wrong, I had Sonic eventually, but probably not until I had played it on the Mega Drive, then went back to see what it was like.
great video the startup music for alex kidd in shinobi world gave me chills.i loved it to. thanks for the memories
Hey awesome list, but did you ever play Spellcaster? Super fun, long game, and I feel it was ahead of its time
I hadn't until someone else had pointed it out in the comments, then I watched a video and bought it off eBay. It is awesome.
The best game I played on the Master System was Ys: The Vanished Omens. It was also the first RPG I ever played.
Kenseiden is a woefully underrated ninja game
yep that one was very underated top5 game of sega easy
Yes, brilliant game.
Technically a samurai game, but yes, very fun.
Sadly ennemy placements are somewhat very tricky (to not say poorly thought) + the insane respawn + the bad jump plateforms... those can ruin the game.

I grow up in the UK and with Nintendo. It was 50/50.
Are retro games a lot cheaper in the US? Old games often seem to sell for just 1$ or 2$ there, in many of the dedicated retro game stores.
Aliens Infestation review you say? Oh, you mean the first video I watched from you, and the reason I discovered your criminally underrated channel. Great vid(the Aliens one, Im still watching this one lol)
Arcade games weren't as available? They were, unless you happened to live somewhere very remote such as the Isle of Skye of course.

I think it’s aged very well

Brit here.

That's E-Swat, more of a side scroller

Oh yeah sorry I should have said, from COH2, you can also play as one of the Japanese commanders from Shogun 2. Yeah good old Sega.
I must be the only Sega kid who had and loved Black Belt.
I can't recall how many times I played that game.

TV Colosso ainda sofreu algumas mudanças quanto ao cenário do jogo, já Turma da Mônica incluído os personagens, porém fases e inimigos o mesmo do jogo que deu origem.
Maravilhosos tempos!
R-Type with the track ball controller was awesome.
Good video, I'm just getting into the SMS so this was helpful.
hi thanks for the video,i have one question can u plz tell me the name of the game in the minute 1:23??the war plane game..i used to play it but i dont know the name...thank you
That's Choplifter! It was in the arcades as well.
Hi, I believe that is Chopperlifter
thank you
How can games like kenseiden sega wrestling operation wolf chop lifter etc.. Not be mentioned
Space harrier. Black belt. Afterburner. So many great games. Still have them all
I always loved hangon/safari hunt.
One of the very few occasions that i can say i was happy to live in Brazil. This is the country where Master System truly dominated, to the point where units are STILL made to this day, as well and hundreds of exclusive titles. Also, it made getting all 3 models very easy for me. :D
Thankyou! Asterix get nowhere enough love on RUclips :)
great video. I think space harrier deserves a mention so does Zillion.
sam torres especially Space Harrier 3D. Sega was always innovative in their hardware
Man, no one ever mentions Zillion, that game was amazing :)
IKR? Zillion and Zillion 2 are *EPIC*
Loved Zillion never played the sequel though.
Maze Hunter 3D. Loved that games as a kid.
My MS2 came with Sonic built in. Anyone know why?
dang... the bg scrolling effect (11:19 - 11:21) in aladin is really close to the tricks they used in toy story and clockwork knights. merp, and wow... spy vs spy made your list? so simple, but i loved that game so much as a kid... mad magazine was edgy af when i was young, so i'd probably have bought any game with their branding. ...phantasy star... YESSSSS!!! and apparently i need to play alex kidd in shinobi world. =P
off the topic... you mentioned liking games that make the character seems shrunken? world of padman is a cool pc game based on quake 3's engine that's really fun, free to play, and the level design is extremely good... =D
great video btw, really liked it. =P
I had the master system also. It had Hang On as the built in game and my friend had Penguin Land as the built in game.
I tried to use the link but apparently idk how
You really should check out the Master Of Darkness game... Really good
Psycho Fox is graphic, game design and gameplay wise a gem and a true Master System Classic Must Have.
The Sega Master System was the first video game console I ever owned. Penguin Land was my JAM!
Wonderboy 3 was brilliant on the Master System. I was completely obsessed.
I know this is an old video, but - good job! 😊
What about Batman Returns?
legorulez49 never played it way back when, the first batman game I played was on the Sega CD, which was a bit naff, MS version is great though
Funny how Nintendo tried to have these crippling policies , trying to dwindle their competition, and now they're the ones hanging on by a thread in the console business. karma.
golvelious as a child was my favorite game , so much fun and time spent on golvelious.
We kinda did see a 16 bit installment of Psycho Fox. It was called Decap Attack.
Lamento no estar contigo en casi ningun puesto... ¿Alex Kidd in Miracle World no es mejor que Shinobi World? ¿Y donde estan los dos primeros Sonic the hedgeog?
always loved dragon crystal as a kid even though i was hard as balls for me back then but as an adult i defeated it finally :)
I have 2 master system consoles. One has Snails built in the other has Missle Defense 3D. Loved the 3d glasses, mine still work, very hard to find a working pair.
What about Zillion?
