Because in my opinion, this may seem obvious, but the song is about accepting his fate and we actually see this journey through how he views death. However, the way I see it, is that he has not befriended death, but instead acquainted him, as he has gotten used to the idea of his demise. Idk, just thought it was a nice detail in the song.
