Too many people hate on John Romero. He's a super nice guy, and very talented and creative. Yes, Carmack had the technical skills and was certainly more successful, but Doom wouldn't have been the same without Romero, and that's because he's got HEART & SOUL!
From what I remember he was basically the team leader that got the ball rolling, but after Doom 1 he didn't contribute much.

    • @generalesdeath5836

I think that’s a good way of describing it. John Carmack was the “brain;” John Romero was the “Heart and Soul.”

Romero was always the rockstar and the passion of Doom, Carmarck was a technical wizard who is undoubtedly a genius but never could really make the doom experience by himself. There is something hollow about Quake, compared to Doom. Carmack's attitude to "story" being like story in porn "aka it's expected but not especially important" kinda reveals why Quake never did achieve the same feeling and atmosphere that Doom did. Like rock bands, all these personalities together really are more than the sum of their individual parts.

Eddie Meltzer He did, and you were implying that Romero was not important. It may not be what you meant but it wasn't clear from your tone or wording. Your response to Midoseito was quite mean spirited as well. Also, it's spelled "you" not "u". GET IT RIGHT.

    • @lionocyborg6030
      @lionocyborg6030 3 года назад +8

Eddie Meltzer 1. It's spelled "are you".
      2. You attacked Midoseiko needlessly when he pointed out you were implying the John Romero wasn't important in your original comment. "And I quote said flame "maybe you should READ WHAT I WRITE instead of fantasising so much". In the original comment you said Sandy Peterson was more important than John. You probably didn't intend to imply John wasn't important at all but your wording did not make that clear.
Pretty sure I made that perfectly clear in my last comment. Maybe YOU should read what others write, and learn to spell.

6:00 Plutonia did this on some maps. I think map 30 had a separate deathmatch arena.
You'd never do this when you're constrained for resources though. Which I'm sure they were back in 93. And you probably wouldn't have a modern shooter do this either since you can't just have a map with 2 separate worlds. In a way, might as well really just have separate maps at this point and focus on making the single player maps purely single player. But it is a cool idea to make a deathmatch map themed after a corresponding single player map but have a flow optimized for deathmatch. Though CoD and Halo Reach and other games do that to an extent but it's mostly copied with slight modifications as opposed to being totally different.

It's funny when you see them all go off on their own, how the creators of the original doom have each of their exceptional talents made more obvious.
Tom Hall : made rise of the triad, not a technically impressive game, not a very well designed game, but absolutely packed with bonkers, off the wall ideas (dog mode anyone?) And tons of little extras that make the game well remembered even though it's very frustrating, and even tedious at times. Tom Hall is an amazing idea man.
John Romero : worked on Daikatana, which while it is not great to play because of poor partner ai, and some obvious feature creep leading to undercooked elements, the design itself of the levels, and feature set are amazing, the game just technically wasn't up to the task of making them all work.
John carmack : when all the other original I'd developers were gone, carmack games became tech demos. Quake 2 is the "two scoops of vanilla, cardboard bowl, not cone" of video games. It's good. Even tasty at times. But it lacks ALL imagination.

The weird thing about Romero is that he so clearly still 'has it' in terms of design, yet he doesn't get to very clearly apply himself. I've played a lot of the Romero Games since Ion Storm, and they're all pretty okay. Empire of Sin is decent, and Gunman Taco Truck was pretty entertaining, but they don't really have the same 'spark' as DOOM.
When you play Si6il 1, and look at this doc and other speaking engagements that he does, it's evident that he not only still knows how to make a good shooter campaign, but he can demonstrate it to a degree that out-performs most of his contemporaries.
I'm really disappointed that Blackroom or any of the other RG shooter games never happened, as I think he could do something good in the genre still. Daikatana was a shitfest obviously, but even that had such good player control and Deathmatch. I understand why he isn't hired as a level designer by another company(he'd have to be paid quite a lot more than normal, I'd imagine), but I'm frustrated that he's not penning a first episode for a Quake successor, or a first person game with RPG aspects or something.

John Romero is still the best there is when it comes to designing levels for Doom. Most of the wad makers on Doomworld, should take a good look at Sigil and see what Doom is supposed to be. Then, they should stop making their garbage slaughter wads, filled with cheap "gotcha" traps, and autistic switch puzzles.

This is genuinely such a bad take. Romero is a genius level designer much like many slaughter map designers. The unlimited creativity of people out there is why this community is still alive because of the unique content and unique level design quirks each person brings. Romero is a genius but we shouldn't just blindly copy his style. That's why Doom and its engine is so amazing, we can do so much with it and we have been doing so much with it for 30+ years!

here download this file. its my personal file. it got everything from doom in it. with other games that run on the doom Engine like Hexen and heretic. Anyway extract this file using 7zip. doesnt matter where you extract it to. to play doom Run the Gzdoom.exe file and choose the game you want to play. In the option menu you can change your key bindings and everything else just like in modern games.
      www.romerogames.ie/si6il
here you can download the Sigil game. extract the files select both wad files in the folder and drag it on to the Gzdoom.exe it will automatically open the menu of the games that you can select. Select ultimate doom and press the play button on the bottom right of the menu and you can play this mod. its that simple :-). and this is how you play any other mod for doom 1 and 2 as well if you would like.

I can summarize this video in three sentences..
    Me name John Romero.
I make doom and people like me.
Here are some maps I make, thanks for your money.

I find this kind of sad, this mans whole life is dedicated to and revolving around a project he was a part of decades ago. Its like Doom is all he has so he is latching on and wont let go.

You should actually look into the sheer volume of output this man produced, it's actually impressive on it's own even if none of it lives up to Doom or Quake. Doom just happens to big the biggest and most relevant thing he's done, similar to a director who worked on a film greatly regarded as an influential classic. That is something that you will be connected to for the duration of your life and there is no reason to walk away from it. I thing it's cool he revisited the game and did this for the community, it is free after all.

You know what would be really sad? If he left the games and fans behind.. the fact the he sticks around and gives us new stuff from time to time is great. I seriously doubt he’s doing it for money, or any reason other than a real love for the craft.

Romero's most successful game commercially speaking was a mobile game he released in the early 2010s. He's always been a great designer. People just know him best for his ID software stint and there's nothing wrong with that.

    • @MedIevalCyrax

John Romero made a lot of good maps in the original Doom, he wasn't involved in Doom ll map design except for maybe three or four maps in total?
He was busy with heretic/hexen by the time Doom ll started production.

    • @StodgyAyatollah

Diakatana was far from one of the worst games ever made, it's problem was really that it was just mediocre. Romero without Carmack is valid but so is Carmack without Romero.

I didn't even hear about Sigil until now! That's a real shame because Wolfenstein and Doom blew my little mind back in the day! lol
