    I just got one of these in 10mm, and the first magazine I went through had failures to eject about every other round. I had already seen people talk about clipping the buffer spring, so I had already prepared myself for maybe needing to do this. Luckily, the second magazine shot flawlessly. I do believe that TNW makes a "light" 9mm buffer set up now, which I might get since I'm thinking of getting the 9mm conversion kit for adaptability purposes. Thank you for your well laid out explanation of the problem and solution.

    I own four, we had this problem with all of them. We have seemed to have solved the problems of stove pipe and feed issues. Turn back screw on top 1/2 turn back to start. The bolts that join the receiver to trigger assemblies. Never put mag in with bolt back. Insert magg. Then slide bolt to charge. Adjust screw till issue stops, mark bolt use lock tight. Using this program we are now averaging 500-600 rounds with no issues. This was a frustrating process but in the end was worth it to me. Love the rifle, great fun when works. I carry an Allen key in each bag for occasion adjustment as needed. We only use 124 grain. 115 grain never seems to work.

      Sorry to hear about your issues. I agree that these firearms can be very frustrating, but once you get them working, they are fun to run. My issues completely ended with the spring reduction. If I ever get another 9mm carbine, it will the Ruger. I will never purchase another TNW.

    Hey man don't be discouraged. I have this same rig in 40sw and never had a FTF FTE or any other problem. I think you got a one in a million lemon especially the buffer spring. I give you props for not giving up on it!

    • @ajcj1970
      @ajcj1970  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks, I appreciate that. My guess is that , with you shooting 40sw, there’s more force pushing the spring back. I’m pretty sure it’s the same spring, because they don’t include new springs with their conversion kits. It runs like a champ now.

      Went through the same thing as you did. I emailed tnw and asked for a new ejector and extractor. Once those were swapped out it ran fine but like you it sat in the safe for a year while i built a few ars. I use the same spring for 9mm, 40sw and 10mm. With the 10mm i can feel the buffer system bottom out, while the 40sw and 9mm feels roughly the same. When it was fte every other round this was my least liked rifle but once it ran reliably it quickly became one of my favourites. Glad your rifle is working now, enjoy!

      Now that it runs, its definitely fun to shoot. I don’t think I would bet my life on it. Recreational use only. One thing I can say, TNW customer service is pretty decent. After contacting them, I feel like they tried to the right thing.

    Mine was having the stovepipe problem pretty much every round. I finally figured it out about 20 minutes ago. Where they're set up to eject from the left or right you have to move the ejector pin in one of the two slots to direct it. Anyhow the factory-installed a ejector pin in both slots so it had to ejector pins in it one on the left and one on the right it was causing the brass to kick straight up into the frame instead of out to the right or left so I took the ejector pin out of the right side and just put two mags through it without the first malfunction. The ejector pin can only be on one side or the other you can't have both of them there that was the fix for mine I put about 130 rounds through it and every single one stove-piped. As soon as I figure it out what the problem was I drove the two roll pins out enough to pull the one on the right side out the ejector pin drove the roll pins out and put 20 rounds through it without the first malfunction so I'm guessing that was the fixed I'm going to do some further shooting over the next few days and verify that but initially I'm guessing it's fixed

    I had the same problem with my 9mm, Spring was too much tension, heated it up on the burner of my kitchen stove for 20 minutes,dropped it in cold water and compressed it for 10 minutes. The heat took some of the temper out of the spring, three years later, still shooting great, no failure to feed or eject. Good luck 😉

Also, I don't trust Walmart ammo. It sucks, but I drive 30 minutes to bass pro/outdoor world to get my ammo. I do get their "store brand" labeled herter's. But, it's actually made by Winchester for cabelas/outdoor world.

    thank you for the video. I bought a 45 ACP model when they first came out. I noticed certain loads will stove pipe also. I have done zero modification, and have found the over the counter ammo it likes now.It does not like hollow points or blunt nose ball.Here are my issues that I have fixed and highly recommend. First another scope, the AIM died. Second: the barrel nut loosens so I drilled and tapped a 6x32 hex threaded stud that jams it so it doesn't loosen. And I bought a handle that has a storage compartment to hold all hex wrenches. Also the two studs that hold the upper and lower together should have no play, and I did minimum four turns on buffer tube. this fixed the stove pipe. Three: The biggest problem. The upper rail came loose and wallowed the holes for the two studs. I have it fixed now by drilling and tapping two man head hex bolts 8X32 at either end. I highly recommend before the upper rail does this. As of now it runs perfect and I have a Osprey 3x9x42 lighted cross hairs which acts like a red dot and 100 yard scope. I also have a laser for close up set at 25 yards.

    Just bought and shot the TNW ASP, set up for 9mm. Fired Freedom Munitions 124 gr. Round Nose FMJ ammo (new, not reloads) Had two stove pipes within the first 7 shots and 2 failed to feed within the next 7 rounds fired. This was out of the TNW factory Glock-style 31 round mag. Yes, I inserted and seated the mag with the bolt closed. Then the rest of the mag fired flawlessly. Next I inserted my Glock brand 31 round mag with the same ammo and it ripped out that mag no issues. The bolt is excessively hard to rack for a 9mm Tactical Pistol. Then I recalled how difficult it is to load new Glock magazines due to the strong springs (the 31 round one I used here was not new). Glock recommends storing the mags fully loaded to break-in the springs. So I am now storing my ASP with the bolt locked back to weaken the spring, as would firing it, to break it in. If it doesn't work I will let you know.

    I'm 4 weeks in now with my new 2023 TNW Aero Survival rifle in 9mm and so far my rifle has flawlessly digested everything I've fed it from light 110gr. handloads to 124 gr. Israeli Di Cut HP to Fiocchi 130gr. RN FMJ to 147gr. HP Sub Sonic. I've read and watched numerous videos about feeding problems with these neat little rifles but so far I haven't had any problems whatsoever. The only thing I've done to it is change the ejection from Right to Left.

    I bought mine (multi caliber, 9, 10, 45) in July 2017, and it came with two buffers, one for the 9 and one for hotter rounds. Works good for me, and I use the stouter buffer for 9mm. My only issue is using the right mags or I'll get some FTF's. My ASR seems to like Glock mags but not Magpul.
    Biggest hassle is it is very hard to switch the ejector for left eject (so I can hang a brass catcher). TNW sent me a bunch of ejector pins and springs for free though.

    • @ajcj1970
      @ajcj1970  4 года назад +1

      When I was figuring this situation out, TNW only sold the multi caliber setups. Now that they are selling caliber specific models, I most likely would try a spring specifically made for 9mm but that wasn’t an option when I made this video. As far as the rounds I put through mine, I ran a lot of different types of loads through it. 115 grain, 115 +P, 124 grain, 124 +P, 147 grain, 147 +P, some bonded some not. I do agree that reloading your own ammo would give you the opportunity to “fine tune” a load that runs good through your firearm but I was looking to be able to run anything through mine, even the cheapest stuff.

    I am looking at getting this in 45acp because there are very few 45acp carbines that take Glock magazines out there, and I am looking at either this or the JR carbine. I’m glad you added a quad rail that looks to be full length, because I want to put flip up sights regardless if I have any optic on there, back ups for me are a must. Did it take a lot to add that rail or was it simple install?
    Do you think the springs on these would have better reliability for the 45acp round? I know they also make a 10mm and I’ve seen that they are convertible between the two calibers. I have a Glock 41 to pair it with.
    I know there is the Kriss but that is almost twice the cost.

    • @ajcj1970
      @ajcj1970  4 года назад

      The rail was fairly easy to install. TNW Firearms sells an “adapter” to accomplish this. They also have a video on RUclips that demonstrates the installation. While responding to this comment I googled TNW Firearms for reference, I see that they are no longer offering the multi caliber lowers with their rifles, looks like you can order them caliber specific. Maybe they have learned their lesson (too bad it was at the cost of the consumer). So maybe you’ll have better luck with your purchase.

Doing this modification was a “last ditch” effort for me. If your problem persists and you decide to do this mod, run the idea past a gunsmith or two and see what kind of reactions you get (as I did). Other suggestions, if you do this mod, would be to have a back up buffer spring, keep the uncut factory end of the spring on the buffer and the cut end on the little neoprene buffer stop in the rear of the tube. I also purchased a new recoil spring Incase I screwed up. I would also suggest that if you decide to modify your spring like I did, only go a half coil at a time then check function. It took a little work, taking off the buffer tube a bunch of times, but it was worth it. I would like to also note that I did this modification after a long discussion with my gunsmith. He was not willing to do this modification due to legalities. I did this modification out of frustration and after a lot of research. You might want to talk to your gunsmith to get another aspect on the situation. That being said, I wish someone had a video like this when I was trying to figure out why this firearm wouldn’t function. Sorry, that was long. Hope it helps. Good luck.

    I own the 45acp version. With it being a more powerful round than 9mm could the universal spring still cause this problem?

    • @ajcj1970
      @ajcj1970  3 года назад

      My firearm was one of the early models with the multi caliber lower setup. TNW ended up making caliber specif setups (I'm guessing because of feed back like mine). My lower setup was designed for 9/40/357. Thier replacement parts arn't too expensive so trying to tune the recoil spring wouldn't cost alot. I'd have a spare on hand and compare the old one to the new one. Go slow, half coil at a time and make sure the charging handle isn't bottoming out in its slot. You can see all I went through before I decided to go this route. Altering a firearm in this fashion is always done at your own risk.

      I cut mine and still have a few malfunctions. It be honest I don’t feel comfortable cutting it any lower. Not to mention the inconsistency of using +p ammo.

    From what I've seen of the Aero and jams, it almost seems as if the bolt spring is too much for reliable cycling of 9mm. As people I'd heard with larger rounds didn't have the feed problems the 9mm boys were talking about. Granted this is just speculation but worth the notion.
    EDIT: Well I posted before seeing the end but I guess I was correct, well at least one of the springs that is. lol

      The handguard is a 10” XTS free float handguard purchased from Cheaper Then Dirt. It has a mud shield installed on the front. The handguard is attached to the rifle with a AR15 shroud adapter for ASR, purchased from TNW. Hope that helps.

    I never understand why people use dogshit foreign ammo and then complain their gun doesn't run smoothly. CCi ammo is american made and still cheap, I've never had a single failure to feed out of American ammo with this gun. Not one.

    Interesting review.. I don't know why, so do not ask as it doesn't make sense to me, BUT I saw a few other reviews where they were having issues as well, and their issues were cause whenever they loaded a magazine with the breech open, which I noticed you did every time as well.. Once they started inserting the magazine with the bolt forward, shazam, it worked flawlessly. HICKOK45 was one such reviewer.

    • @ajcj1970
      @ajcj1970  4 года назад

      I’ve also seen those videos (I feel like I’ve seen ALL the videos). The bolt being open or closed while inserting a magazine didn’t make a difference for me. I’ve seen reviews ranging from absolutely zero issues to nightmares like mine. I will say, that after troubleshooting the issue, it is a very enjoyable firearm to run. I just wish reaching that point wouldn’t have been so darn frustrating. As of right now (late 2019), the Ruger 9mm carbine is a far better option.

      One of the reasons I’m posting videos like this is to help someone going through the same situation as I am. Hopefully the next person having this problem doesn’t have to go through as many steps as I did to get to a resolution. Now that this carbine is functioning, it’s actually quite enjoyable to run. I just wish it didn’t take such a long process to get there. I heard plenty of stories about these functioning 100% out of the box, so don’t give up on yours. With the combination of the manufacturer having fair customer service and people posting info on these carbines more and more everyday, your experience may be very different then mine. Thanks for the comment and good luck.
