  • OCPD isn't all bad. We're pretty good with a few things. I think the thing that makes it awful is the crippling need for perfection.
    So if you're having a bad day and you're feeling lousy (and you have OCPD), here are 5 things that make you awesome.

    She is terrific! Described me in detail. 65 yr old diagnosed with OCPD 12 years ago. The upside of my experience is, after escaping from alcoholic and abusive parents was able to my fulfill dreams transitioning from construction worker to scientist then business manager to corporate executive. Published a number of peer reviewed papers, lectured at universities and instutions around the world, all without attending a university. The degrees came later LOL. Loved participating in think tanks where I would be the only one without a Ph.D., and end up winning the consulting gigs. Piloted my own aircraft with lots of IMC IFR time, a rush. Love the positive aspects of OCPD. The downside really sucks if there are forced career changes. Took me some time and therapy to adapt. To all those wrestling with this wonderful personality disorder- You have gift to excel at whatever you set you mind on to accomplish. Grow your empathy! Remember to love yourself, love your family and especially love the wonderful Creator of all things.

    Another Positive Trait - People with OCPD are VERY responsible/reliable. I can always be sure my friend with OCPD will take care of things. He will never be flaky or not should up if he said he were going to do something. Another great trait - They are not over-reactive. They can hold everything in (which can be good and bad...) and respond calmly during arguments or uncomfortable conversations. That is such a blessing for people who are more emotional/reactive!

    I’ve been trying to understand my brain and came upon this. Not all, but a lot of these points fit me. I have some aspects of my life that I obsess about, my art, fitness, different cultures for example. The problem is I find it hard to regulate and when I obsess over one thing, the others tend to disappear. This seems to happen in a 3-6 month pattern. I just want consistency in the things that are important to me.

    Thank you so much for these kind words, I have been suffering with PTSD for just under a year now, through therapy and treatment I've discovered there's certainly a lot more wrong with me than just my anxiety reaction to the trauma, I had been wracking my brain and doing an unhealthy amount of research into other MH conditions when I stumbled upon OCPD. I thought I might be ASD, I thought I might have OCD, I was "trying on all the shoes" to see which one fit. OCPD is literally my entire life, everything all these videos talk about is me as a person inside and out, constantly getting called a Grammar N**i, Getting told I'm way too obsessed with details (in a nice or mean way) and so on and so forth, it's finally liberating to know this is a developed behavioural disorder and I'm not just this anal insufferable person that everyone hates to be around. I am valued by some, I do have positive traits, it's not all negative. Hopefully I can find some treatment and support to mitigate the negative aspects and I have no problem at all identifying and keeping the positive aspects. Thank you so much again.
    OCPD'ers go ahead and find at least 3-5 spelling and grammatical mistakes in this comment, it's probably quite easy because I was excited to express my appreciation for this video.

We have HUGE advantages that we should be using for our benefit. We have many traits that others just do not possess and are very much in a positive light. Thank you again, I really enjoyed this, and needed this reminder. I'm going to keep it on file to remind me of the good stuff. God bless you in all your endeavors!

    OMFG what is this video! I just had a talk with my psychiatrist today who after 2 years introduced me to the idea not to look into "avoiding" my problems but to find ways to embrace my personality. This is me! I am not the smartest person but I am addicted to researching and learning just like you described. I just got a negative remark in my rehab facility for trying to fix their plotter problem and figuring out their IT was blocking updates - "wasting time". You rock Lady!

    I just found your videos today. I watched the one about the niche traits of those with ocpd first and now this one. I have to say that this all resonates with me so completely. Your videos make me feel like it's ok to accept myself as I am instead of feeling like I need to change (I'm constantly trying to improve myself). I felt like the only thing you mentioned that was a but different for me is the response to change. I did used to really hate change, but if I feel in control of the change- I feel better. I change several things rather frequently, like my hairstyle, dress, and household furniture. I keep seeking the perfect arrangement of things. It is very hard for me to leave things alone because I constantly see where things can be improved (good trait for engineers and those who work in tech where efficiency is valued!)
    I'm going to talk to my psychiatrist about this tomorrow morning and see what she says. As you might have guessed, I'm constantly searching for the perfect diagnosis 😅
    Great video and content, but I did find the music a bit distracting. I tend to like very cut and dry information, but that is just personal preference.
    New subscriber 😊

    • @EdenV
      @EdenV  2 года назад +1

      I really appreciate you sharing your honest thoughts and feedback with me, thank you! I can definitely relate to the constant search for perfection, and I'm also the type to feel good about change if I am the one in charge of it. My music for example, I've switched from chiptune (the kind in this video) to lo-fi instrumental in my later videos. I personally love chiptune, but these videos are for you, not for me, and others have also mentioned that it can be distracting. I hope your discussion with your psychiatrist was productive :)

  • @minimalistlifestyle5497
    @minimalistlifestyle5497 5 месяцев назад

    I am textbook case of OCPD except for the collecting/hoarding trait. On the contrary having too many things distracts me and I am extremely minimalistic and frugal (with a list of my possessions of course!). I even have an everyday checklist of things I want to do for my self-improvement (like gym, learning-courses and skills, house order, beauty appointments etc). All these are egosyntonic as mentioned in the video. The downside to it is that it is hard to coexist with other people (except if they have OCD traits as well) because they are so messy and disorganised and frankly incompetent at times. Also social gatherings feel like a waste of time especially if they don't serve a purpose. Relationships and major decisions and risks like buying a car or house is a problem too because of the underlying perfectionism.

    While some of the traits she mentions are indeed true (at face value), the way she explains them is incredibly simplistic and needs far more context. For example, in my case, my perfectionism and need to over-analyze and over-research everything is one of the most crippling traits of my personality, specially at work and in an academic setting. I spend sooo much time researching every new thing that comes my way, that I end up lagging behind my peers, because I don't have common sense telling me to stop and move on to the next thing. I keep doubting myself when making choices (if the one I picked is the most correct or profitable either in terms of time and/or money) that I end up getting stuck in small tasks that one should be able to resolve quickly. And even worse is that I never develop a "work method" because since I keep second guessing my decisions, the next day I'll try doing the same task differently, to make sure there isn't a better way to do things. And it's a never ending cycle. While my peers are moving on to more complex and larger concepts, I'm stuck in the small details I noticed in the beginning, never going further. Like she said, people with OCPD do indeed notice the smaller details that others might not (which might cause attritions), but at the cost of missing the bigger picture, many times. It's despairing and makes it very difficult to work with others (and to keep up with others' pacing). I wish it was as advantageous as she makes it sound like, but all I want is to get rid of this sickening, never satiable perfectionism.

    • @EdenV
      @EdenV  2 года назад +6

      I really appreciate where you're coming from with your thoughts. I struggled with perfectionism for years before I worked to understand the reasons behind my perfectionism and strategies to push through the barriers I would create for myself. If you are struggling with your perfectionism, working with a professional therapist is a much, much better option than a random video of mine on youtube. A psychologist who specialised in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy could be very helpful for you in understanding and overcoming your perfectionism. Best of luck to you for the future and I hope you succeed!

      It's exactly the same here for me: I have a tendency to get fired because I'm perceived as being a slow worker - meanwhile I'm researching/experimenting to improve their processes, of which they are unable to perceive the small but compounding inefficiencies.. If only they gave me just a little more time, I could save them a huge amount of time and unnecessary (frequently repeated, effort.

    Please more OCPD content. I’m worried about my dad. Your approach is great and so much of what what you say is so real.
    Agreed, my OCPD dad is awesome but I’ve moved back in with him and apart from him stressing out over ever detail in the house he’s a bloody legend.
    Side note/question. I was diagnosed with ocd. Is there a genetic link at all? I’m thinking my grandmother had ocd (worked as a newspaper editor whole life raised my suspicions), dad ended up OCPD and me pure/toreutic ocd.
    Lucky me, my mum had BPD but that’s another story.
    Thoughts?

    • @EdenV
      @EdenV  3 года назад

      Your Dad sounds awesome, but I agree that living with someone with OCPD can be very stressful. Unfortunately there's not much you can do to help him, but you can absolutely work with him to find out what his boundaries (eg house rules) are and what boundaries you can establish (eg, your bedroom is your space to control, not his).
      OCD is a very interesting disorder as there is a strong genetic component passed down through parents to children, however there is also an environmental component that can trigger it too. Sometimes parents with OCD can have kids without it, and sometimes parents without OCD (but with a chaotic home life) can have kids with it. OCD can also be triggered later in life too.
      OCPD and OCD also have a very strong comorbidity rate (around 20%). While I do discourage outwardly diagnosing friends/family yourself (that's why we have psychiatrists/psychologists), having this kind of insight into your family is super useful in understanding your own behaviour and learning about ways you can manage yourself with your loved ones.
      I really appreciate your sharing your family situation with me. It sounds like your family is quite colourful! I can relate, I have a pretty... let's say, dynamic, family myself. Thank you for watching and supporting my content too, it really means a lot to me :)

    My likely OCPD-ex-girlfriend was the only person willing to stick with me for such a long time, even though we had major relationship problems for a long time already. Yes, you guys can be so dedicated that you do things you hate just out of sheer feelings of responsibility. But how much does it help you sticking to doing something that you don't actually like to do? Wouldn't it be better if you could let go of people and things you don't actually like?
    When my ex finally decided to break up with me, I felt like she had finally allowed herself some freedom and happiness.

      Hi Sammie, good question! Therapy in my opinion is one of the best options for managing OCPD. You can do a lot of extra self-work, but when it comes to OCPD we're often unaware of our behaviours and the motivations behind those behaviours. Therapy helps us unlock the reasons why we do things and helps us manage them. Thanks for watching my video :)

    Yes, of course some OCPD traits have a positive flip side. But here, you make them sound like flawless saints. And that they would be just fine if everyone else would just fall in line. However, living with a person with this disorder and no awareness or willingness to become aware can feel like you’re suffocating. No amount of asking or suggesting for even the smallest change is not met with stubborn opposition. Insufferable. It’s very damaging to relationships. Sorry.

    Really awful people you should avoid at all cost.

    I have a critical eye, it makes me sound like a snob if I vocalize it… but once I taste, smell, see, or hear an imperfection I remember it and can point it out. It’s so bad. So many restaurants I cross off my “good takeout” lists because of the poor changes and it takes me a few months before I will consider trying it again. Also when I have a good movie or song I will fixate on it, of course it’s all subjective to my tastes and perceptions.
    I thought all people where like this but I am apparently hyper critical. 🥲
