Trower's best work in a long time. Sari Schorr's vocals are a perfect complement to Trower's bluesy rock guitar which sounds as good as ever. Great production too.
I first learned about this album when Pete mentioned it during the show about older artists producing great new music the other day. What a fantastic album! Sari Schorr's soulful vocals complement Robin's fiery guitar playing perfectly. I've listened to it several times already and it's sounded better with each listen.
This album is a grower. On first listening ok, after three listens it has blossomed. Vocals are great match for Trower’s more laid back guitar work. I hear references to his back to his earlier work. All in all a solid addition to the Trower treasure chest.
Loved it. LOVED IT. The vocals and the strat just soar. Last year on an ep of Curse, I just did recent pickups - the new Trower and Ann Wilson albums were among them. 12 months on, both have new albums again....and both are even better. Beg. Steal. Borrow.
One of the few albums this week that have had the chance to hear before coming to this episode. Have to say the that first track melding of the vocals and the guitar made for an excellent combination. First listen is that the track is a favorite from the album but this one will be on the playlist for a coming road trip and looking forward to hearing it again. Another thanks, Pete, for pre-posting some of the weekly new product episodes to allow whatever pre-listening can be done before seeing your review.
I love blues and blues-rock, and I love good, soulful R & B, and I've loved Trower for many years, so this album is a must for me! Just ordered it! Thanks for the review, Pete! Also just ordered two new SOT shirts, from the official, legitimate link, and can't wait to get 'em! 🙂
Just listened to it the other day - it's good. Innes Sibun plays some of the guitars (formerly from Robert Plant's band) - he also has a number of quality solo records. The other is Oli Brown of RavenEye (also not bad but only one full-length album) plus a few good blues/rock solo records. The great Walter Trout guests on one track... For Schorr I also have two other/later albums: 1) Live In Europe. She shows her power live - a blistering version of "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" & a more laid back "Ready For Love" - guitarist Ash Wilson has a solo album called Broken Machine. And 2) Never Say Never (2018) - both also quite good. I think Never is even better than Nature, nice cover of Bad Co's "Ready For Love". Still need to get her 1993 release Forever True
I love the vocals on No More Worlds To Conquer. That was a great album. This one seems a little too stripped back and I'm not too keen on the production, but I'm hoping it will grow on me!
Really a beautiful album. Like it a lot. Robin Trower does a great job supporting Sari Schorr and gives her a lot of space to really shine. And it works, the result is great. 3.5 sounds fair, I'd personally go a bit higher and give it a 4, and if it's just for the vocals. Didn't get any of her solo stuff so far but it's on Spotify and definitely worth a couple of listens.
Sari Schorr has 2 great studio releases and a wonderful live album ... she has toured quite a bit to build her following .. have seen / chatted to her at a couple of live gigs in Aberdeen ... she's a stunningly good blues rock singer with a super tight band / sound .. do check her albums out ... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland
A Force Of Nature, Never Say Never, Live In Europe & Forever True (don't have that one - I believe it's just listed under the name "Sari" - might not even be blues/rock)
I’m a huge Trower fan and not only Joyful Sky in opinion fantastic but love most of the albums most of the albums he written post 2000s. What lies Beneath Roots & Branches Something’s about to change Time and emotion Coming closer to the day Are all really good albums to me, I listen to them all the time.
Very good album. Interesting to see a great female vocalist interpet Robin's songs. I believe this is the first time he's done this and it sounds great. Trower's choice of chords and phrasing ... masterful! Only drawback is that I wish there were a few fiery tunes mixed in for variety. It's slow to mid tempo on all 10 tracks. But Robin is 78 and that's probably where he's at these days.
I think you're correct - his first female singer...It'd be very interesting to hear what his in-between/extremely short-lived (less than 12 months 1971-72) band Jude sounded like (with Frankie Miller on vocals plus Dewar & Clive Bunker). This was his project immediately after Procol/Broken Barricades & before his first solo album. I've never seen any recordings but there are some band pics out there, they're referred to as "a Zeppelin-influenced four-piece". The tune "I Can't Wait Much Longer" gives co-writing credit to Miller so maybe that came out of those sessions...? I'm counting in total 10 different Trower lead vocalists over the years (including Trower himself)🤷♂
@@wolf1977 Holy cats, that had to be a dynamic band! Dewer AND Frankie Miller? Can you imagine the vocal tour de force with those two exchanging leads and back up vocals? I don't know if this could ever happen but I'd love to hear Glenn Hughes team up with Robin. Keep Sari Schorr. Hughes could play bass and he and Schorr could team up on vocals.
for anyone who misses that psychedelic 70s sound that robin trower used to play, they should check out the Howling Universe - Shady Electric album, the guitarist has that tone spot on,
sadly after collecting all his albums i think this is one i will probably miss. Robin is my favourite guitarist and his determination to constantly make and release new music is admirable. However the last 7/8 albums have been a little samey mid tempo blues with a touch of funk here and there. Of course one cannot expect the fiery music of old and Trower has settled into a more laid back sound but i think maybe, of what i've heard so far of this album, it will be the gap in my collection.
i had this album at 3.5+ , i thought it was good maybe not great!! it reminded me at times of joe bonamaasa and beth harts work together!!! tho this gal isnt as good as beth hart in my opinion!🐯
Haven't had it for long but I know I like it...a lot! Actually only skipped the title track. Trower continues to put out great music, this guy can flat out play (and proof that you don't have to spew out 180 BPM+ notes to be a great player). I have to go all the way back to 1997's Someday Blues to find a Trower album that I didn't love (which is because he started singing). One of the all time greats who's doing just fine. Should land on a lot of people's best albums of 2023 lists...
You skipped the title track ?!?!?! Play it a couple more times, friend, it is a stunning track imho and who am I, a fan from his Procol days, to judge! Honestly, that track has burned itself in to my brain. The intro is a bit strange, I admit, but Robin did the soundtrack to a movie 20 odd years ago called 'The Good Humor Man', an odd film starring Kelsey Grammar, and it is very reminiscent of the music score in that. I would add that I'm not overly taken with Sari's vocals, tbh, the songs in my head would have been improved by male vocals..

3 listens in on this one. Slow, simmering, smoky blues. Feels like you're sitting in a blues club. A chill album for sure for me.
There's stayers and players, Robin Trower is a stellar stayer and this latest dish does not disappoint.

Great New Release from Robin! Sari adds that grit vox we've been waiting for! I just wish He would tour!
If you're in the UK, rob, he has announced a few dates starting May 28 💙💙💕💕

WOW! I just checked it out on RUclips and I just ordered it! and there is going to be a live stream coming up that i will not miss!
Loved it. LOVED IT. The vocals and the strat just soar.

3.5. Ditto. Pete. The Brooklyn singer / tremendous vocals. Thanks for your time 👍💯

Pete you've hit the nail on the head about this and Robin's recent material. This is his best since Roots and Branches.
Looking forward to listeing to this one. Sari Schorr is a great blues singer. Her album "A Force of Nature" has long been a favorite of mine.

Trower is a true samurai of the stratocaster in all his glory loud blazing and heartfelt with riffs and bends that heal us all
I will definitely check out this album. Thank you for your review, Pete.

Nice review Pete! I totally agree with everything you said here. That's a fair rating, gonna have to get a copy

I like his vocal style. At his age he's killing it. We're lucky to have him still. Robin is a treasure and a legend to boot.
I'm glad that one of the "good guys" of rock still has passion for making music.
I like it. Quite enjoyable album. I will certainly return to it every now and then :)
From the very first song, Burn, OMG, that Strat sound ...
really solid album. I just got it and gave it a few spins. Spot on review.
I’m going to check it out. I thought his album from last year was really good as well and he let a young singer take the vocals on that as well.
Fantastic albums
Robin’s tone is pure butter on this one. Really great.
I have just listened to one song, Wow, it sounds great...
Where you are going to maybe my favorite post 2000 Trower. I heard another interview with him and he said he’s already finished next album as well.
I’m a huge Trower fan and not only Joyful Sky in opinion fantastic but love most of the albums most of the albums he written post 2000s.

Are all really good albums to me, I listen to them all the time.
I liked it. More of Trower's fantastic soothing guitar tone and Sari fits in nicely, a little a bit like a female counterpart version of Jimmy Dewar
Good, solid Trower rekkid. Kinda chill and smoky.
Pete, seen Sari a few times now , check out her live album
It's good

Pete you have to listen to Saris two Solo Records, excellent Rock/Bluesrock...
This record was sold in a private group only . Happy he keeps turning out new albums , this album is absolutely fantastic and production. 😃 👍
Good solid album. Didn't he have 2 releases including one featuring a female lead singer and the other with a male?
G r e a t ! ❤
😄👍
Would like some heavier work with Paul Rogers on vocals from Robin.

I didn't care for it at all, she's a good singer but just not my cup of tea,I thought his last album was a lot better
