This video is just addressing my issue with the reveal that the gomu gomu no mi is actually the mythical zoan devil fruit, the hito hito no mi Model: Nika.

Maybe it was a previous generation of 5 elders who changed the fruit name, that way these guy wouldn’t have known and their new orders on capturing luffy maybe a result of shanks telling them. Maybe only Im knew about this power but he doesn’t deal with such people and the current 5 elders never thought to bring it up. This is a stretch but it’s something I guess. Anyway I understand and share the frustration.

This Nika thing is a huge retcon from Oda. He never even thought of it until he began the Wano arc. Fans tend to give their favorite authors too much credit. South Park spoofed the hell out of that problem.
I think this is so true, and for me it's made it quite difficult to get invested in One Piece since the end of Wano. Fans can obviously point to the "Nika" silhouette from Skypeia as evidence of a plan being in place (and lean on the Joyboy stuff for further support), but this really doesn't work. Until Wano, the silhoette meant nothing. The first mention of Nika that made the Skypeia silhouette relevant only came when Who's Who gives us a conveniently timed lore dump (along with the admission that he was actually asked to guard the Gomu Gomu no Mi because it's really important that it doesn't fall into the wrong hands). Only shortly after this, it's suddenly confirmed that "Luffy was really Nika this whole time".
The fact that Oda only really starts laying any of the groundwork for the Nika reveal (including the name Nika itself) within Act III of Wano gives me the strong impression that either this was never part of any plan.

To refrain myself from creating a whole paragraph about gear 5th and the issues I have with it, I will simple say this: I am SUPER happy to see someone bring this up as I have only seen praise about gear 5th and no one had brought these points up and I 1000% agree with your video.

My biggest issue is that Luffy was always known to have a mid fruit that he just perfected and trained hard with pure determination to become stronger. Now they just turn around and say, jokes he had one of the strongest fruits in the series and is a child of prophecy.... also im sorry but if you go back and re read the fights, gear 5th doesnt even feel that much stronger than gear 4th
He still had to train and his mid fruit was never the focus point of the story they're are pently of fruits that or worse like most regular zeons, actually it pretty much implied that it was more to his fruit when he started to produce fire with red rock

As someone who marathoned the series in just a few months it was pretty clear
I think this has been a major problem with Wano, events and characters not having the proper build up or foreshadowing that they deserve, in my opinion.
I hate how all it does is take away from Luffy as a character.
A part of Luffy’s charm was how hard of a worker he is, he soared through the ranks and brought his completely mediocre fruit’s potential out using his own strength. Nope. Turns out he’s some sort of chosen one and the fruit is one of the strongest in the verse.
I’m also scared of how it will impact the story later on. When he inevitably fights Akainu and Blackbeard, which are gonna be the 2 most emotional and high-stake fights in the series, he’s just gonna be laughing and goofing off the whole time. There’s not gonna be any emotional impact like what we felt in the Luffy vs Lucci fight, cause now it’s just gonna be all goofy and silly.
Luffy was a hard worker though. He spent 12 years just figuring out his fruit and it took 2 years to awaken after he figured it out. Gear 5 is the result of his hard work. It took 14 years of hard work to get gear 5.
Also for the second part, did it affect the stakes the Kaido fight had? If it didnt then you've got your answer

gear 5 is 100% an ass pull in my opinion, he literally backed himself into a corner and the only way to get out was to give luffy a supersaiyan transformation.

To be honest it just seems kinda stupid to change the name now when almost all his powers were rubber based and you could chock the elemental powers as some sort of haki, like how sanji can turn to stone, set himself on fire and use diable jambé. Gear 5 just seems like a logical extension to his abilities, his devil fruit awakened and he makes everything like rubber.
But that is not it’s real power tho

The red hawk is the least problematic thing about his powers. Rubber can heat up. His body was steaming in gear 2nd already.
He tanked a blast from Enel and we have pre-established rules for his devil fruit that he is immune to electricity, resistant to blunt force and weak to cutting. But he is a sun god... not rubber... or he is a sun god AND rubber but that is still weird.
Oda needs a better explanation. Maybe 1000 years ago in a more advanced one piece civilization there was a kid enjoying some cereal and watching a cartoon about a sun god nika type character with rubber hose animation, and not understanding what rubber hose even means wished they could be like him. Devil fruit spawns into existence and WALA you got a devil fruit. Its a very dumb reason but its something that makes more sense than what we have gotten.

Great vid bro! My only issue is that they didn't make an attempt to capture/kill Luffy as well. However, I kinda have faith that Oda has somthing up his sleeve. Cause there has to be a reveal for why they failed for 800 years to recover the fruit. Seems like they gave up on it and instead tried to lesson it's popularity so stronger people wouldn't seek it out. Tho the fruit name thing has always been an issue so idk about all that

@@lambousginiguccigod2007 WG probably thought that since it has not been awaken for 800 years it will not be a problem but since luffy has managed to be on equal level of the emperor they probably fear luffy will awaken the fruit. So they immediately sent cp 0 to deal with luffy since cp 0 was already in Wano. Well, that what I got when I first read chapter 1043.

from what I remember that they failed to recover it because zoan fruits have consciousness and this very zoan fruit has that of a sun god itself. (see chapter 1044)

I think that it’s fair to say that, at the very least, the fruit is a retcon, and not something planned from the start. You can definitely argue that some points of it make sense, but it was most definitely not planned.
yup people say a single silhouette is enough foreshadow but that doesn't explain anything, until who's who he never thought about it.
First chapter, Luffy says outright "after eating this fruit, I feel like I will always be happy"
Well it depends on the translation, on some others he only says he feel happier, but every translation refers to happiness in relation to the fruit.
Also his healing factor hinted at him being a Zoan and the weirdness of his fruit that didn't fit with rubber makes more sense with being Nika (rubber when stretching doesn't increase it's mass, which Luffy does, also the fire and electricity manipulation doesn't make sense with only Rubber).

i don't think the fruit was a retcon but the execution from oda was a bit poor or lacking info still. we don't know what promted the awakening of luffy's fruit. was it his death? is that a requirement to awaken a DF ? or is this specific to nika fruit? maybe the gorosei knew that luffy has the fruit but didn't consider it a threat yet because it hasn't awakened in 800 years as they said. we won't know the full story until we get an explanation for what exactly is the condition for nika fruit to awaken
I remember reading this for the first time and was really excited to see such a big reveal but also a bit confused by a few key decisions. The way I figured devil fruit names and powers worked (in my head at least), was that you didn't know the name or powers but had a vague sense how they worked after consuming the power and kinda just figured out the name afterword. For example, A zone logia type would have a pretty easy time figuring out what their power was and most paramecia are pretty easy to understand. A person eats an unknown fruit, gets a vague sense of what they are able to do to bring it forth, and suddenly finds they transform there body to fold and move like paper, They would probably assume they have the Ronbun Ronbun no mi (Ronbun=Paper). So I can accept Luffy not knowing the name or full powers to his fruit.
I can even accept the world government doing what they did because; A) his devil fruit power wasn't out for a large portion of his early piracy, he was just a troublesome pirate with what was a small time bounty (yes, 30 mil is deff small when ya have monsters like Katakuri kicking around); B) by the time the gorosei would have found out about luffy's fruit, it would have brought up a major problem to give him a monstrous bounty, as it would bring question to why and draw people to Luffy (which they clearly don't want); and C) from the way they talk, it is clear that the only thing they feared was the potential awakening of the fruit, which for normal devil fruits is difficult. for a mythical zone type, the awaking criteria would likely be quite difficult (possibly even requiring the user to die in the same way luffy did), so the gorosei were probably not to worried about him awakening up until they heard about how far he has gone.
That being said, the only thing I take problem with is actually the name and nature of the fruit. It's not a huge gripe but it is one that I do have. I genuinely think we could have had it remain a paramecia type but give it some extra pop by having it be a special paramecia like katakuri's fruit, because they way I've understood what a special paramecia is that it does this; A special paramecia acts like a normal paramecia in it's ability but as the added effect have taking on a property of either a logia or zone type fruit. I think that would have been better because it really enhances the fight against katakuri by it being two special paramecias fighting each other and luffy looking to power that he would get at some point. It would also make sense as to way he doesn't have a hybrid form and is just rubber in his normal form. There are probobly some flaws in this idea that I haven't thought about but I do feel a bit bad that the fruit's name isn't the Gomu Gomu no Mi anymore.
Same. Making it a mythical zoan just feels like a huge change from everything we know about it and its not even like a normal mythical zoan since luffy only has a transformation when he awakens his fruit, with the gears being creative inventions from luffy.
The only problem is nika and joyboy, but this is easy since you can just make the fruit nika's and It works just as well. You may miss out on the sun symbolism but that's not a major loss and can still be easily implemented.
Making it a special paramecia just makes it seem like a upgrade from what we've thought it was and allows gear 5 to still be a form (although I was still hoping for luffy to combine gear 4, 3 and 2).
This is the best video I've seen on this topic. I was wondering why so many people had an issue with gear 5, and the other youtube videos on this were just angry ramblings.
Point 1: Ppl know the name of their devil fruit when they eat it
This isn't necessarily true. We've seen many examples of ppl finding out about their fruit thru the ecylopedia. Or hunting that specific fruit down. Kinemon doesn't know he has a devil fruit, he hasn't once said it's name. Orochi knows the name of his devil fruit because he's associated with pirates from overseas. Including the women who had Bon Clays fruit, and the guy with the Barrier Barrier no mi. All backed by kaido. Theyve established the encyclopedia is very wide spread. Maybe in the beginning of series ppl didn't know what devil fruits were, but Sanji was a child in the North and then east blue and still read about Devil fruits.
Point 2: The world government should have been hunting Luffy down
They have been. They sent Kuma to assisnate the straw hats at thriller bark, not knowing Kuma went soft on them. The next time the straw hats popped up was Saboady, where once again Kuma AND an Admiral was set on them. After Sabaody no one in the world has been able to pin down the straw hats. They were gone for 2 years, then popped up real quick on their reunion... Imediatly went to fishman island, and then when they came to the New World IMMEIDALTY strayed from the log pose course and went to Punk Hazzard. Then Dressrosa, with only Smoker knowing that's where they were going. Then Zou, where no one can get to. The government hasn't been able to track down the straw hats since Thriller Bark. The closest they've gotten was when Gravity Admiral was not capturing them in Dressrosa. And he wasn't reporting the straw hats were there.
Point 3: They should have known he had it because he's rubber
Joyboy hasn't shown himself in 800 years. It's not like this fruit has been in hiding for 800 years. Ppl have eaten it, and died and passes to other ppl. They Goresie was saying they haven't been able to control it for 800 years. Everytime they get it it somehow slips their grasp. But for 800 years ppl have used it and not activated joyboy. Luffy was a rising star but they didn't think much of him until, like I said earlier, they tried to assassinate him at Thriller Bark. And that failed. And that, and sabaody, was their last actual shot.
Exactly 2Spooky has ignored MENTIONED points in the story. They weren't necessarily scared of the fruit itself. They were scared of it awakening.
"It hasn't awakened in 800 years" means other people have eaten the fruit but it just never awakened. Perhaps even other powerhouses. Why would they care about some country bumfuck kid from the east blue has eaten it?
Lets say I was a big evil that lived for millions of years and my only weakness was the indistructable excalibur stuck in the stone. No one was pulled it in 1000 years. Why would I care if one day a random 8 year old attempted to pull it?

People seem to want the whole force of the WG just to capture a rookie. Even then, there were always more pressing matters they had to immediately focus their attention towards. It's false that they never tried to capture Luffy.
The only point that works is kuma’s assassination attempt. But that’s not the first time they learned of luffy’s fruit, realistically it could’ve been as early as when he saved zoro. The kizaru example doesn’t work since he only went there bc luffy punched a celestial dragon. Had luffy not done that, I see no reason to think kizaru would’ve showed up.
The point on devil fruit users learning the name of the fruit also becomes a retcon, given your examples of ppl not knowing their fruits while others who were just as isolated do know their’s.
If it’s been 800 years of nika fruit users showing how the power works, why wouldn’t the WG be able to clock it from a mile away? Luffy wasn’t being secretive with his usage of it or anything. They def should’ve know by the time the strawhats entered the grandline fire sure
Oda is not the writer fans make him out to be. Ppl hasn’t been critical because we were all children when we started the series.
My biggest issue with Gear 5th is that it never needed to be a mythical zoan.
All of the abilities showcased by Gear 5th could all still come from the gum-gum fruit. The godly shawl that is associated with awakened zoans already had the explanation of being made of steam since Gear 4th.
Nika could have just been a previous user of the gum-gum fruit.
Nika could have just been considered a sun god by the people who saw him instead of a literal god in a similar fashion to Usopp.
Luffy could still be the second coming of Joyboy by just having a similar personality and, as a result, becoming the second person to awaken it.
Instead of literally having the Mythical Zoan Sun God Nika Fruit.
I think it was Imu at the time of the Reveri who was the trigger for the Gorosei to get into action. They might have known that the Gum-Gum Fruit is wanted / dangerous, but didnt know the exact reason behind it until Imu talked about it.
Of course it does not make sense, it was a retcon after all. Not happy with it either but we cannot do anything about it.
Okay lets go point by point.
1)The name of the fruit. As far as I remember people don't learn the name of their fruit when they eat it, like the name doesn't just pop in their head, I could be wrong but I think they get named based on what powers they give so if you eat a fruit and suddenly you can control magma then that has to be the magu magu no mi, if you eat a fruit that gives your body the properties of rubber and apparently nothing else then you would assume that that is the gomu gomu no mi. Considering that the naming of fruits is generally so basic it wouldn't be hard for an user to figure out the name of his/her fruit just by looking at the powers they get even if they can't access the encyclopedia.
2)Why did the gorosei change the name? Well this one is pretty easy to deduce. They reveal that zoans have a will of their own and that's why the fruit has been avoiding them, since they can't get the fruit they decide to discredit it and pass it off as a simple weak fruit because the true powers of it are not revealed until it's awakened, something that it's extremely hard to do, yeah it is a gamble since someone really powerful could still eat the fruit but it's better than doing nothing and everyone knowing how strong it is and therefore trying to get it. This way they lessen the chance of the fruit becoming a problem for them while they figure out a way to obtain it.
3) Why didn't they send someone for Luffy? This is the only one that I can see why people are upset because if Oda doesn't handle it well it would be disastrous. I think that this is something that has to do with Shanks and that is going to be explained after Wano is over. If Shanks is the reason then it would make sense why he was at the Reverie since he clearly has some kind of deal with the gorosei but until we know for sure it's all speculation.

To answer the third reasons, I link it to the fact that zoan fruits have a will of their own, which is somewhat important.
In chapter 1037 it was stated that, that fruit is nothing but a legend, even for us and has not awakened for centuries. Suggesting that for the elders it was nothing but a ghost tale, if anything but also do to the fact that the hito hito no mi: model nika had not been awaken for centuries, is also probably the reason why they did not send anyone to capture luffy as they had probably assumed that he wouldn't be capable of awakening it. This my theory but because the fact that zoan devil fruits have a will of their own, all previous users of nika in those 800 years had probably not met the qualfication or desires of the devil fruit in order to awaken it and due to that reason they probably assumed something to the extent the luffy wouldn't be able to awaken it's true abilities and that he was not a major threat until the presents of zunesha at wano
i thought the same, plus it is possible that there is a real gomu gomu out there and the gorosei just thought it is the gomu and not nika, until some other dude(shanks) told them
I must thought it could be linked tit he fruit, they have been explained to have a mind of their own in a sense, the nika fruit mighta made people believe it was the gum fruit so it would only awaken for someone who derserved it, like luffy at the start thought it was the gum fruit but now its awakened and he hasn't learned its new name, so it may be an exception to this fruit that it dosnt reveal its true name, or maybe all mythicals are like this, like Kaido thought he ate a fish fruit until he awakened and became a dragon, thus realising its true nature
I would say the ideal of it not having awakened in centuries actually is why they waited so long they thought Luffy would die before awakening it and now he is in a state where awakening it became a real possibility when they have agents near by they can control
I don´t think the conversation is supposed to imply that they changed the name of the fruit themselfes. They did search for the nika-nika no mi for centurys but i don´t think they knew it was actually the gomu-gomu no mi. That would be completely unjustifiable, as you just said. We see them change their priorities very suddenly and drastically when they command their agent to take out Luffy, so it´s kinda save to assume they just found out that the gomu-gomu no mi is the fruit they were looking for all this time. There are still 2 big problems tho but i believe Oda can explain these much better than them knowing about the fruits real "identity" and not acting for all this time.
The remaining problems would be:
1. How did they not make the connection between the gomu-gomu no mi anyway, when they know how similar the powers are?
2. Why were they interested in the gomu-gomu no mi (after all they send an CP9 agent to secure it), if they didn´t suspect the fruit of being important?
One possible explanation would be that they had been deceived a long time ago into believing the gomu-gomu no mi is just the lesser version of the nika-nika no mi. If that was the case they might´ve still wanted to collect the "worthless" gomu-gomu no mi just to make sure, that whenever someone with rubber powers appears, they know it´s the nika-nika no mi for sure. idk just a thought.
Edit: That would also fit with them knowing that the fruit hasn´t been awakened in centurys, because then the fluke would´ve been up at that point i guess

Gear 5 is awesome, but I believe Oda could’ve done it without the name change. It could have simply been the Gum Gum fruit’s awakening with some slight alterations.
If he was going to switch the name he should've called in Gomu Gomu Model: Bungee Gum. It has the property of both rubber & gum. LOL I've always wanted 2 use it & couldn't resist.
Luffy has always been representative of the Sun. The sun = freedom and the dawn of the new world which has been mentioned numerous times by the minks. I find it crazy that even when Luffy is LITERALLY the SUN GOD you guys don't understand the significance of him being representative of the sun. did you even read the fucking thing lmfao

@Anon ymous almost every arc luffy saves a island from tyrant trying to take over or already has taken over for example skypia dressrosa wano alabasta arlong park in all these arcs luffy beat the villain saved the island and gave them freedom the reason luffy wants to be pirate king is to be the most free in skypia luffy was pretty obviously showing parallels to nika and the reasons luffy aint know what the fruit was called is because when he ate it a shanks crew member said it was the gum gum fruit since the fruit operates on imagination he was stuck with rubber powers and the reason no one tried to take the fruit is because only the gorosei imu and debatably shanks now about the fruit and if they killed luffy the fruit would just continue avoiding them so what’s the point

Good take on this honestly, the only thing I can think to add is they changed the name to hide it internally within the ranks of the world government. I say this because plenty of world government officials have gone off and become or aided pirates so probably best to keep it between the elders. Then there can only be the one who eats the fruit and the elders who know what the fruit is. Plus I imagine luffy being luffy just ignored the fruits name in his mind and was like ooooooh I’m rubbery 🤣
Well the 5 elders did say they didn't expect Luffy to awaken his fruit because no one else in the 800 years they were searching for it has awakened it which is why they didn't think of sending somebody after him.And they seemed more afraid of the fruit Awakening then the actual fruit.

They’re searching for a fruit for 800 years scared someone will eat it, and then when someone does eat it they suddenly let it slide because they think luffy is too goofy to use it right? They don’t want to take the chance to just capture him and make sure when they’re capturing people for way less? Doesn’t make sense

This was an awesome video. I do wonder why the Gorosei waited so long to go after Luffy for his devil fruit knowing the possibility that he could unlock, I do hope we get an explanation on this in future chapters. This whole thing got me thinking about what is the Gorosei thinking.
I think that when luffy was a weaker pirate there was no chance of him awakening it so they thought it was better to know the whereabouts of the fruit rather than have it in the wild, but as Luffy got stronger the risk of the fruit awakening became too great so they had to try and kill him.

I 1000% agree with this, but also, what kind of makes me worried about it is that the story is obviously about Luffy wanting to be king of the pirates, and even with having a terrible devil fruit, he is able to make it work and defeat characters that are way stronger than him. With gear 5, it is that whoever gets the fruit becomes king of the pirates, which makes me angry because we all thought that anyone could become king of the pirates if they had it, but with him having to be king of the pirates, idk, it makes me feel less invested in the story in general.

The reason as to him not knowing the name might be because he was a child and was told the name was the gomu gomu no mi and just thought that they knew better even tho he inherently learned the name, the fruit also has a will of its own so maybe it actively withheld its own name from him
Given we also heard about Zoan Fruits having a will of their own one page before the reveal of the model Nika fruit, it could just be that the fruit itself didn't want to tell Luffy about its true name? Actually, there is a misunderstanding on how you learn the name of the fruit. You dont magically know it from eating it.
There is a book of most known devilfruits, you eat the fruit, you see its ability, then you check the book and see which name and ability description matches what you can do. This is canonical and confirmed in SBS by the author.
It makes sense to me that It was not just a regular rubber fruit. Because many times he did many crazy things using his powers which exceeded the properties of rubber.
But again people ignore the simple fact that every user knows the name of their fruit. Let's take Brooke for example. Before he died he knew his fruit name but not it's power. You cannot just simply change the name of the fruit. The only way this can be cleaned up is if they make it that Shanks purposely told Luffy the false name of the fruit which limited its use to rubber because remember when Luffy ate the fruit Shanks grabbed Luffy upside down and it was only until he told him he ate the gum gum fruit, did his neck stretch to the ground. It would make sense because Luffy is the only character to constantly name his attacks after gum gum red hawk is the only attack that doesn't have gum gum in it and that is wildly different

I agree completely with this video like the gorosei really didn't think it through fully with not capturing luffy sooner, but I do belive that pre-timeskip and even a bit post timeskip they didn't want to send a bunch of marine forces after one kid or draw too much attention to luffy as it would raise questions not to mention the fruit the past 800 years had to have had another host before luffy so more than likely awakening the fruit is almost impossible or very difficult meaning they prolonged the capturing (killing) of luffy.

The only thing that could possibly explain it is if they were afraid of Garp & Dragon’s retaliation , but that doesn’t make any sense either considering Garp works for them and Dragon is absentee on the Grand line meaning he’s not going to know a long time.
not only is there a plot hole with his devil fruit it also goes against the whole theme of inherited will. Inherited will was basically inheriting someone's dreams and it is a concept that can be applied to anybody. Anybody can inherit anybody's will. But luffy having this "destined" fruit just goes against all that cuz it throws all notions of inherited will out the window, because nobody else can bring the dawn of the world, no it was always meant to be luffy or someone who was lucky enough to eat the fruit. Not only that, people say that the fruit "chose" luffy cuz of who he was. LUFFY WAS A SNOT-NOSED BRAT WHEN HE ATE THE FRUIT. He didn't even pursue freedom (it was only after Sabo died that he did). Luffy had no redeeming qualities for the fruit to choose him.
An easy way was just to say that it was the awakening of gum gum fruit and not a completely different fruit. I am sure noone would question it
There's just so much that's not known about this fruit from it coming out of fucking left field. That freedom thing you mentioned is even worse because I've seen people speculating that it was actually the fruit's will that forced itself onto Luffy to make him want to be the most free. It's just insane to think it's possible Luffy hasn't been doing anything of his actual own volition, but it's the will of the DV this entire time. That'd be so shit and go against the themes of the story.

There's only ever been 1 Joyboy in 800 years, they had no reason to think luffy could awaken the fruit and how would they even know the rubber powers didn't come from another fruit? Lets not forget the Gorosei didn't order Luffy's death until after Shanks visited them. As for your first complaint, why would Luffy think his DF wasn't Gomo Gomo no mi? Shanks told him that and since the hito hito fruit type Nikka is sentient and seeks out it's user, why would it want Luffy to know it's true identity?

@@Wavedashnoir If Luffy called it by it's real name and told all his enemies what fruit he ate, that would mean exposing a legendary mythical fruit, which would make EVERYONE come after Luffy before he could awaken. The fruit wants him to awaken, it wants him to become the next joyboy. Mythical fruits are not like other devil fruits, they have wills. Luffy's fruit is the fruit of freedom and liberation, it searches for a user that embodies those same qualities. Luffy would have never made it past the east blue mouthing off to everyone that he ate the mythical zoan nika nika fruit.
Also it doesn't matter if the world government knew, because they are afraid of the fruit awakening, otherwise it's no threat.(it's not like killing Luffy would give them the reincarnated fruit) I suspect shanks told them Luffy is the real deal and the fruit will awaken soon (likely to force Luffy to awaken it) and that's what spooked them into issuing the assassination order.

They were worried about the awakening of the fruit and up to this point we’ve been lead to believe that devil fruit awakenings are pretty rare.

Tbh, I have zero issues with it. Especially when I take into consideration how much behind the scenes could have taken place to help avoid the outcome of Luffy snowballing into the monster he is now. First thing we need to consider is how often the Revolutionary Army was involved in keeping Luffy and his crew out of the clutches of people who could do something early. Dragon stopping Smoker, Kuma not taking Luffy's head in Thriller bark, Kuma literally sending the Straw Hats to remote locations where they can get stronger. The fact people even forget how much Dragon influenced his journey so far blows my mind. And then to make things ever crazier, it's not all that strange to assume that Garp probably play a large part in helping Luffy. He straight up knew he had the Gomu Gomu no Mi and he kept him safe at Foosha Village. Even going as far as training him to at a very young age. Garp is not an idiot. He probably knows far more than we think he does considering the people he has met while being a part of the Navy. There is even evidence that could possibly suggest that Garp is still in contact with Dragon or at least somebody with the Revolutionary Army. In any case, you can't sit there and ignore that there is probably a lot of things we have yet to have revealed to us. But more importantly, how much Revolutionaries helped Luffy and his crew move along the path they have taken. When you consider that in context to the story, it's not at all strange that Luffy wasn't stopped. But whatever. Tell me what you guys think. I am open to changing my mind about it but it will take a lot. I welcome conversation about it nonetheless.
This makes sense to me, but I also think it has to do with something else. The theme of One Piece is heavily into the passing of wills to other. The very beginning of Luffy’s story is receiving the will of others to continue on a greater purpose. The Will of D, still shoulder in mystery.
If we look on it like that, I think this is more of a story of chance. The Government can hound the fruit and it’s users as much as they want, but the Fire of will continue to pass onto others.
This isn’t the story of a pirate against the world…
This is the story of people, dead or living, that will change the world. And, as long as someone can pass it on, it will be a wave that cannot be stopped.
So, try as the government probably did, there is little that can stop these actions.

Also, about your later point, I don’t think the entire government knows about it. I don’t know why there keeping it a secret, but every decision regarding this seems to come from this Imu king person. I think there might be something we don’t know about the story yet, or could be a possible avenue for Oda to fix the loophole in the future.

Them not being in a hurry to capture luffy for his devil fruit power until wano makes sense because how would they know that this spwcific pirate would be able to awaken the fruit when nobody else could in 800 years. Tekking has theorized this, but there are two reasons that could make sense
1. Zoan fruits are confirmed to have their own will. And it's might be a special case for Myth variant since they're more intelligent than regular zoan and may be able to choose when and where they want to reincarnate. And I don't remember if Tekking said this, but I also theorize that the Nika fruit can also change its name to avoid the world government.
2. If they just suddenly raised bounty for Luffy when he was just a rookie, everyone would know something was off, and someone would eventually theorize about his fruit, and if that person happened to know how to get the fruit from a user, like Black Beard, they could hunt for Luffy's fruit for themselves, which the WG don't want to happened again. They need to keep it low like nothing special about him.

I do not like it because they over do the loonytoons aspect and their is not a hint of seriousness from what I have seen currently.
To me before gear 5 they would have a balance between goofy and serious but that balance is completely thrown out the window.
I think it was handled in a very weird way. It was kind of pulled from nowhere and made me sort of upset it definately could have been handled better.but I have confidence in oda that he can explain it well and bring more to light about this. It was very strange that the government didnt go after him much harder than they did and it also contradicts a lot of what we know from devil fruits.That said I love luffys awakening and gear fifth. I love it so much in fact that its become my new number one favorite power up/form/ability in all of manga. I love this form so much so that its beaten my former favorite manga form of 10 plus years and thats ichigos vasto lorde form. Luffys awakening is definitely number one too me. AS a kid I grew up having Popeye and Disney as some of the cartoons id watch the most and other cartoony rubber hose animations. Luffys awakening reminds me so much of my childhood and my favorite comfort shows and it just looks so whack and fun and fits perfectly for luffy and one piece as a whole. One piece is by far my second favorite fictional series as well. Right behind Kingdom Hearts. I think its amazing and im looking forward to seeing it more in the future and what luffy does with it.

Sun god Nika the zoan mythical fruit, was stated by the gorosei to have a mind of it's own, and was constantly lost for the LAST 800 YEARS. completely untouchable.
We saw this in marineford, even the Marines strongest tiers were being countered by, the impel down prisoners or the White beard pirates.
Luffy was constantly saved.
Heck we all know Luffy should have died in logue town and what happened? conveniently dragon was there to swoop by and stop, the execution and save Luffy from smoker.

Counter point. It was also told in the series that it is an incredibly difficult fruit to awaken. The reason they decided to kill him now instead of earlier, is because the idea of him awakening the fruit, became more plausible meaning he would actually pose a threat. I do agree with you on the name plot hole, the only explanation I could come up with is that they somehow tricked the fruit into thinking it's name was the gumu gumu no mi. Or, the fruit doesn't reveal it's true nature untill you awaken it. There is also the point that he was a child when he ate it, and shanks, someone he looked up to told him it was the gumu gumu no mi. Kids believe what they are told especially if it is told to them by someone they look up to. But, this is all just speculation, we really have to wait for oda to explain.

I keep seeing shanks as the reason why the world government didn't or doesn't go after luffy for his fruit, but even that doesn't really make sense. Because either shanks has to be so massively powerful to the point he can hold off the world governments onslaught single handedly, or like some people are saying he made some kind of deal, the deal would have to be an absolute cannot miss deal, I'm talking world changing type deal for it to make sense. This is a fruit that can flip everything they've worked for, thought of, or ever done on its head. It doesn't matter if nobody could awaken it for centuries, just the mere thought should put them in action regardless of powerful enemies and deals. The reason is gonna have to be good or the gorosei is about to look goofier then luffy's g5.
The thing is, the very first moment Luffy ate the fruit, Shanks immediately drilled into his head that he ate the "Gomu Gomu no Mi". like he very much did not allow Luffy the time to even process the name of his devil fruit.
And since Luffy trusts Shanks' judgement and knowledge (as a kid), well, that explains it.

If the world government, suddenly cares more about a random kid rather than the emperors, and others. That adds more questions than answers that and while, unless it's common knowledge D is well known throughout world, I don't think the government can give justification. Sure Luffy is a pirate, but that's it. Why single out this one pirater, while there are other well-known pirates and far more dangerous in terms of both power and influence

i think you misunderstood the DF naming , just as you said you have to learn the what ability you have first and luffy learned his from shanks the same with law learning his from corazon and doffy from trebol etc. So we have several cases of people learning their abilities beforehand and just running with it. Second The gorosei didn't think luffy would've awakened until that moment so they didn't waste any chances and actually successful killed him but in doing so caused the thing they feared the most. Yes they didn't actively try to kill luffy solely for his DF (as far as we know) but did so when he was on the moment of awakening.
Honestly, I think knowing the name of the fruit isn't inherent but rather learned through outside means. I believe that a basic run down of what the devil fruit abilities are is learned inherently and from there people who never looked at the devil fruit encyclopedia or even knew it existed tend to assume which one they have especially after using it and seeing what it can do. As for why the world government never went after Luffy despite knowing what his fruit is I think it's due to it only being dangerous if awakened which the openly state. Which coupled with it having been 800 years since it was last awakened and at least two different people having refered to DF awakenings as something that takes years of training and dedication of honing your devil fruit to do making it an extremely difficult task and that i can recall the only ones that have been directly shown they can do that are doflamingo, and katakuri both of which are In their 40s katakuri being 48 and doflamingo being 41. Both of which having had their devil fruits for a considerable portion of their life. So, from their perspective itd be safe to assume Luffy who's not even 20 yet isn't anywhere near close to breaking that glass ceiling especially considering the last time he was seen it took his entire crew to defeat a pacifista which weren't anywhere near the league he is now and then showed up and started causing as much chaos as he has been and made enemies out of two of the strongest people that aren't working for the government all in the span of a couple months. So the fact it took them watching him going against Kaido and Big Mom while being heavily out matched when it came to numbers and then fighting Kaido on a somewhat even playing field for them to truly take Luffy seriously as a threat to them.
the gorosei probably didn't make a fuss about it because they would need to explain why a mere boy with rubber people is dangerous.
same as renaming to gum gum fruit, people will still seek the fruit but will assume it is just gum power and don't overthink it. I think the true power of this fruit is limited by the imagination of the user.

I don't know, could be a retcon or (my theory) gorosei /world government either had a power or method to 'alter' the fruit (given how fruits can be made artificially as well)? like the gum gum fruit got awakened and 'remembered' it's true power because the situation now?
I don't think there's really ANY way that you can justify this transformation or its reveal. Especially about the government and never ONCE sending a CP agent or Bounty Hunter after Luffy specifically for it.
A better way oda could've revealed it, Is by saying that it hides its identity by pretending to be another devil fruit and only awakens to its true power when the user embodies the ideals of sun god Nika, that way you would only know the fruit's true nature when it awakens

He could’ve told the gorosei about luffy and his fruit in the reverie and at that point it was almost too late but they did end up sending a couple agents right before luffy awakened. I really like G5, i just think Oda had no need to change the name of the df and create this entire discussion. So far the ability seems exactly what the rubber fruit awakening could've been, except for the color change and the "mood" change. The color can be explained by haki i guess, and the mood has been toned down to a regular excited luffy in the last 2 chapters so he didn't need this whole ridiculous god power. Luffy was already gonna be the most ridiculous top tier in the world, no need for sun god shenanigans. Other than that, the fact that he can modify his opponents' body seems iffy to me aswell. Modify your body and the environment all you want, but your opponent? nah that's crossing boundaries.
Other than those details, i really, *really* like the G5

Very interesting point. Generally speaking the World Government seems to be relatively hands off, but here it seems they just really really didn't expect Luffy to "Awaken" his powers until Wano. I think the bounty system is what holds them back. They foolishly assumed the Strawhats are a weak pirate group hoping they'd get wiped out fighting other pirates
You make a very compelling argument, I do love the wacky gear 5 and I do see the absolutely massive plot hole it left. It would have been cool if right before the Wano arc they had someone specifically go after Luffy or if they said they didn’t want to go after him in fear that he’d awaken the devil fruit in one way or another. They actually had the perfect moment to do that at the global summit when the ruler of the world was to give the wisemen a name of someone to be erased from history. Still love the series tho ❤️
They could have easily baked it in during Dressrosa. Bounce man has the ribbon and even Doffy was launching at how ridiculous his transformation was. He could have even said something about how it reminded him of a story of a fruit that the elders feared.
I think that even if Luffy learn its name is a chance since he was a kid being told that it was the girl gum fruit convinced him that it was called that Also there’s a chance the government in one piece chose not to throw a bunch of stuff at them because it’s someone who could become a really big threat this is actually really big threats currently destroying stuff
G5 killed the series for me. Luffy went from being an Underdog to a Chosen One.

Before this reveal, he was a lovable underdog who had used a shit fruit in clever ways to beat some of the best. He was never OP. Not till after the timeskip when the show got boring and repetitive.

I don’t think the whole name thing holds much water, in water 7 right after kaku and khalifa eat the devil fruits, Lucci tells them to figure out their abilities quickly, but if you learned the fruit’s name after eating it, you wouldn’t need to “figure out” your abilities, because what the hell else would the “horse-horse fruit, model: giraffe” do?
Hmmm. I think I can definitely agree, I feel the reveal was a tad rushed. Potentially theirs more to be revealed later (as I feel shanks told the elders about luffys fruit. )
When it comes to the powers, appearance and creativity of Gear 5 I like it. Though on reveal I lean towards a similar opinion to Spooky. Until we get past a few chapters just to give it more wiggle room. Let the questions linger for a tad longer and see if Oda attempts to explain these issues. If he doesn't then I'll be dissatisfied with the rush of build up.
Maybe this is the reason Garp wanted Luffy to be a marine so badly, because maybe he somehow knew that once they learn of Luffy's true power, they'd kill him for being a potential threath. There are a lot of devil fruits, maybe there is a look alike fruit and Garp sold them bullshit, being that Luffy's devil fruit is the gomu gomu no mi.. Hell, he probably told Luffy that because Luffy is such a dumbass xD

Luffy names his gears himself so he just named it gear 5th since it's a stronger form, I don't see the issue or why it can't be considered both awakening and gear 5th lol
Everything up to Gear 5 felt earnt but when you learn it's a Zoan type. That means Luffy always had mad endurance because of his fruit, not because of him as a character. Also yes the tension in fights is just gone now, even the fights in the arc after Wano is a joke and just makes him look invincible.
One thing I really disliked about this whole reveal is that we knew absolutely nothing about the Sun god Nikah and the Lunarians prior to a few dozen chapters ago. So it never had much time to settle before ultimately revealing that Luffy IS Nikah. This is very unlike Oda, where he would introduce bits and pieces throughout arcs and then do a reveal.
One way I think this could've been fixed (With the power of hindsight of course, and if Oda truly did plan this all along like all the Oda worshippers say) would be if Oda actually gave us bits and pieces about the void century throughout each Island in the New World, much like he did for Fishman Island and Joyboy, e.g. Punk Hazard maybe we would learn a bit about the Lunarians; Dressrosa - The 20 Kings; Zou - Kozuki Lineage etc.
And lastly about Gear 5th, I love it, it's Luffy in his purest form, but let's be honest, if Luffy went gear 5th without the whole Devil Fruit retcon, I doubt any fan would get angry, because everything he's been doing so far correlates to what we know about Awakening anyways. There's literally 0 reason to turn him into a Divinity and go with a "CHOSEN ONE" trope. I've honestly lost interest in the direction One Piece is going just because of this. I preferred Luffy back when he was just another random person, not the chosen vessel of Joyboy or whatever the heck is going on now.
Another thing about Luffy's Fruit that I think makes no sense, is that up until this point, all Zoan fruits required the user to transform into their respective forms in order to use their powers, but Luffy's does not. It just allows him to use all his powers in his base form, without any transformations needed. Now you could argue that it's because it's a Human Fruit and Luffy is a human, but that argument falls apart when you remember that Sengoku also has a Human Fruit and he had to transform in order to use any of his powers.
Marco has definitely used phoenix healing in base form, kaido has definitely used element attacks in base form, for normal zoans you might be right, but also normal zoans only power is transforming, but it seems clear mythicals retain powers in every form.

i think at some point oda intended to create a 4th devil fruit classification, hybrids.
fruits that fit into multiple other classifications.
like marco having a logia zoan.
this would be a nice box for almost all mythical fruits, as well as outliers like katakuri, he would be logia paramecia.
this could have solved some issues. like maybe the fruit is still gomu gomu, but gomu gomu is actually a hybrid paramecia zoan. and THAT is what the gorosei hid.
like instead of just being rubber, it makes your body as flexible and free as nika. and the gorosei hiding this fact keeps people from exploring their powers enough to truly grasp nikas freedom to do more than just stretch, like how luffy began to do with red hawk, snake man, etc. then only upon awakening do you unlock the full nika zoan form.
as far as not going after luffy, they dont want to make a bigger deal out of him for fear of potentially triggering an awakening.
if they treat him as any other pirate, it reinforces that he is nothing special, and if luffy believed that lie then he would never awaken.
they just failed to realize just how close he was to grasping nika until he was already heading deep into yonko territory.
and any attempt to go after him then would incite war against the yonko.
so basically tried to play the long game to keep luffy's specialness hidden. and failed. but couldnt correct their mistake without inciting the very kind of war/rebellion they wanted to avoid.

I always interpreted the you’ll know the name of the devil fruit once you eat it as you’ll know the name the devil fruit once you eat and see what powers it gives you. I don’t think the fruit just magically tells you it’s name, but I could be wrong. There is still a lot we don’t know about devil fruits.
Also I feel like it should be noted that as far as we know the only people who know the true name of the Gomu Gomu no Mi are probably the Gorosei, maybe Shanks, and a few other individuals in the One Piece world. Sengoku, Garp, Rayleigh, and Whitebeard didn’t seem to know or show any interest in the Gomu Gomu no Mi so it’s real name is probably more well hidden than Robin’s abilities to read the Poneglyphs.
This brings me to my next point. While it is true Luffy has had a bounty since the end of Arlong Park it’s very unlikely his powers were well known at this point going forward for a while. It’s true that Luffy has been shouting Gomu Gomu no everywhere, it’s the feats Luffy has committed that are far more important to report back to HQ. It probably wasn’t until Marineford that the Gorosei learned about Luffy having the Gomu Gomu no Mi.
The last thing I want to say is that as far as the Gorosei know it was Shanks who stole the Gomu Gomu no mi from Who’s Who and probably thought it was still somehow in is his possession for the longest time. After all why would a person who would eventually hold the title of Yonko have any relation to some random upstart rookie from the weakest Blue? It would make more sense for him to have it.

There's just no way possible they're that uninformed. Honestly that would make them look like an even bigger joke to not even try to keep tabs on a fruit that can turn everything they've built on its head. Regardless of whose hands it's in. And don't some of the marines already know about his connection or at least possible connection to shanks?
@@amantethelegend8067 well all these news people you speak of were probably just reporting the big awesome facts like defeating a Shichibukai, invading Enies Lobby, and punching a Tenryubito. The cameramen could only get a few pictures of Luffy when he wasn’t using the Gomu Gomu no mi and probably didn’t dare get more. After all he is a notorious criminal with a giant bounty so being around him for too long could be dangerous. Also it’s unfortunate but there doesn’t seem to be a spy network on every island that reports directly to the Gorosei. A missed opportunity but only the Cipher Polls seem to exist and they only ever do their assigned duties it seems.
I also want to add it’s unlikely any of the low level marines and WG agents that Luffy has used his Gomu Gomu attacks on were able to say anything to the Gorosei as there’s a chain of command. It’d be like a fry cook talking to the Board of Directors at McDonalds. The only people whose reports might have been worth looking at were Smoker, Aokiji, Garp, Kuma, Moria, Kizaru, Sentomaru, and Spandam.
The first 4 I mentioned have their own reasons for not disclosing the Gomu Gomu no mi due to their own beliefs towards the WG and their personal connections with Luffy. Moria probably was too petty and bitter to go into more detail when questioned about his defeat. Kizaru and Sentomarus reports probably came right as the war with Whitebeard was about to occur so him punching a Tenryubito and the vanishing of the Straw Hats by Kuma were probably more important than Luffy shouting Gomu Gomu no all the time. And Spandam is just an incompetent buffoon who lied and fudged reports to save his own hide. The only other people I can think of whose reports might have been of interest were the vice admirals leading the buster call, but I think the only attacks of Luffy they saw were Gear 3rd which could hint Luffy has some sort of giant related power rather than rubber.
Also other than Garp I can’t think of any other marine or WG affiliate who knows of Luffys connection to Shanks so if you can think of someone else please let me know.
Most of this series, it feels like Oda has this master plan. But the twist on luffy's devil fruit does not feel like one of these cases and the explanations don't make sense at worst and they are a mess at best.
I have to keep calling back to Enel. Luffy fought Enel on easy mode because he is Rubber. If he wasn't rubber then how? If he is just immune because he is a god or the sun... that is a bad explanation.
If he had some kind of Rubber Hose animation Toon force devil fruit someone thought up in the past (vega punk arc spoilers kinda) and maybe he is rubber because RUBBER HOSE (stretch but better than being a sun god) than maaaybe.
