Censorship in Roald Dahl books considered ‘cultural vandalism’: Piers Morgan

  • Puffin’s decision to censor phrases and words within Roald Dahl books has been reviled on all sides as “cultural vandalism," says Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan.
The changes include swapping Cloud Men to Cloud People in ‘James and the Giant Peach’, a line describing tractors as black in ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ has been deleted, and the removal of the word fat as an adjective for characters in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.
He says the changes are an attempt to “re-write history” in a way that does the publication a disservice.
“It’s insidious the way that these ‘wokies’ are gradually airbrushing the world and re-drawing it in their own image, with their own world view.”

We who believe in liberty and free expression need to secure our heritage so it can be passed on to future generations (assuming that is if the new Puritans ever do actually reach puberty). If the wave of revolutionary zeal ever passes, we needs to preserve copies of the originals and eventually destroy the censored versions, or better still put them in a museum dedicated to Woke Puritanism so people can see where indoctrinated madness can take them .

Plus there are people who follow the woke “like lemmings to the Sea” without any consideration of the affect on our young and on our country. Companies eagerly jump on the bandwagon, including some in the film industry. They need to stop and take stock of the affect the propaganda is having/will have on our younger generations, to placate the woke, without any thought of the toll it will take on their mental health. Censorship is a very dangerous game to play and it begs the question, who is benefitting from this action? Ultimately it all boils down to cold hard cash and power. It’s a slippery slope to a country run by dictators. Britain voted for Brexit to take back control of our country, not to turn the country into a dictatorship.

A majority of Christians accepts the theory of evolution so I said many millions instead of a billion. I will only mock Christians who are opposed to science. Mostly I mock Christians who think that the Earth is flat but there are not that many of them. I do not know what status the theory of evolution has in different muslim or buddhist groups.

It's quite another to mutilate the original work completely so that no one is allowed to read it anymore. There is nothing remotely "inclusive" in such blatant book-burning.

The problem is that it opens Pandora's box, because then the editing never stops. What is and is not offensive can be changed constantly, and the government can also redefine what is and isn't. So we end up in a situation similar to the one in George Orwell's book 1984, where people are employed to constantly re-write books and articles forever, according to what the government says.

I knew when reading 'The Witches' that the whole point of witches wearing gloves to hide their ugly hands, wigs to cover their bald heads and shoes to disguise their toeless feet is because it's teaching kids how looks can be incredibly decieving, and for kids to recognise that they need to use their intuition, think rationally & distinguish between what is genuine & false. I swear, If they come for the Chronicles of Narnia or the Hobbit & Lord of the Rings I'm gonna scream.

It's not just cultural vandalism, as that's bad enough: it's also a violation of copyright and the author's intentions and created material. Imagine you write a book, a part of which several people object to. They then change your book to their tastes, instead of simply leaving it alone or not reading it. This is just like robbery; it takes away from the original unjustifiably. There is no control then as to how many or what changes will be subsequently made by the pirates... it's very bad news for civilization in general.

Also where do you get the audacity from to change someone's works of art? Especially someone who can't agree or disagree about the changes! And language captures a spirit if time and history, which is fascinating to see. I read books from the 50s and 30s when I was little and I was intensely happy that I was in the 80s and not in the 50s. Teachers calling kids dumb imbeciles and ridiculing them. Was something I had never seen. But that's what happened in the 30s in some schools! Books, films, music, plays are a time capsule with all the good, the bad and the ugly. Don't touch that but take the good and learn from the bad and the ugly!

The reason, Roald Dahl included those words was because he used descriptive language (one of the things I like about him). If Augustus Gloop is to simply be enormous & not enormously fat, that would be so bland. If you don’t like his writing because you cried about 1 word added, easy. Just Don’t read it! If you have a problem about his legendary writing pieces, stop reading! It’s fine because nobody is forcing you but that doesn’t give you the right to write disrespect his unbeatable talent! But thankfully, I have the real thing. 100% Unedited, 100% Original & definitely not killed by the Woke editing.
