I love to retire over-achieving flies; ...so much validation.
I'm so glad i'm not the only one that does this. I literally have a framed box on the wall. Hall of fame.
Can you please consider a video for those of us that fish solo?! How do you shuttle a rig or deal with one rig while rafting alone?!
Do you walk back to your truck? Ride a bicycle?! catch a ride with someone?!
The logistics seem wonky but doable obviously! Thanks
Drift(?) anchors can help... either the parachute style...
or
there's a style where you wrap 3x 1' sections of chain in rubber hose(reduces snagging) that drags along the bottom.
I second this, would make for a cool video as well
That would be a good video for sure
I use to tie nice looking flies before I use to guide. Now, right size of hook, get color close, profile and can I tie a lot of these quickly. Because as we all know, they will find the bottom and clients break them off before you even get to grab the rod to save it. 😂😂 PT, hares ear, walts worm and zebra midge. Add in some junk flies and good to go. The KISS method.🤙
On the stretch where Ben fishes regularly in Montawyoradoaho there is a shuttle service that you book online or call. Tell them your put-in / take out and time and pay and your rig is at the takeout. 🙂
OMG, that intro was the best ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've gone back to OG flies in general.... A pheasant tail, a palomino midge, and a hairs ear, can't be beat...And the venerable wooly bugger.... Good topic Ben, well played! Keep that moon under raps bro!! LOL!
Squirmies, barrel swivels, and bobbers, huh?
He has officially. gone to the dark side. Next thing he'll be fishing mops with a tenkara rod (like me).
13:15 My biggest fishing pet peeve in general is seeing line all over the trees or the bank so I try to get my flies back as often as I can. At least breaking it off at the knot so I don’t hurt nature
Dude Ben, mooning that train was hilarious and typical for you 😂😂😂 gotta love it!
Thanks for showing us the flies and leader setup. And the lunar exposure technique while rafting is awesome.
I definitely retire memorable flies, I have the nymph I caught my first huge rainbow on in my vest/pack so I see it everytime I open the fly pouch, but I just got back from a trip where I hooked into a big brown and fought it for a few minutes before he snapped me off. My buddy caught him a half hour later and I got my fly back… I kept fishing it and eventually snagged it on the bottom and lost it. I wish I kept it, I’ll have that cool memory forever but I wish I kept the fly as a reminder to add to the growing memorable fly collection
I came up with an interesting challenge for myself. I wanted to fish, but I didn’t want to mess with flies I’d already made. I call it the one day challenge, I take a hook or two, scavenge the local area around the place I want to fish for parts that I can use to build a fly. Then, once I make the fly I have to catch a fish on that fly. It was fun, and even with my terrible skills, I managed to catch a fish with a totally one off fly.
I picked up a Plano Tactical Ammo Crate as my boat box. It is fantastic, and they are only like $25 (I got mine on Amazon). It has dividers and Cliff Bugger Barns fits perfectly in it vertically. I have the dividers set so there are 4 compartments in the box; 2 have fly boxes, one has tippet, floatant, tools, etc., and the other has extra sunscreen, gloves, etc. It fits perfectly behind my drift boat's rowers seat and I can easily pull it out for access. It is also just the right size to strap to a kayak or a SUP if you are into that kind of thing. Anyway, it is a great, inexpensive option for a boat box if you are looking for something durable but budget-friendly.
Well, I knew this was going to be a fun video when you gave your regards to the train. Lots of good rambling, and yes, I would like to see what you are putting in your boat box. As for flies, I will go get a hung up fly regardless of price or effort. I take pride in saying, "No flies were lost or left behind!" And I will say this, I looked at a sale ad from Bass Pro, and when they want $18 for a dozen San Juan Worms, I don't mind tying my own. In fact, that was the fly that inspired me to start tying.
The intro to the video... The opening line of the description of the video. Gold. 😂✌️🎣
Love to see ideas on organization. No life jacket?
I remember when I first started getting into fly fishing, I was so proud of my fly box, and the dozen or so Walmart specials in it. Fast forward a couple of few years or so. And years of tying my own now. I have more than I will ever use and if I snag up I don’t care to lose it any more. I tend to discard flies just because they made me mad because I made a bad cast and they didn’t float how I wanted them to. Or I casted terrible and the fly caught the line so I pluck it off and toss it in the bottom of my bag to discard. I’m rambling at this point, but for sure I remember my beginnings and I really should revert back to being more conscious of the flies I use.
Solo videos are my second favorite type of video you post. After rants, of course.
Yes, I retire specific flies, trip memories and/or special fish caught. And a recent trip I provided all the flies for, I will be handing over a few flies to my fishing partner that hooked him some very special fish, first fly caught and a few personal best catches too.
I’ve collected thousands over the years as well. My issue is I always buy 5 or 6 of the same pattern from local fly shops of the areas I’m fishing. I have a tendency to leave dozens in the branches and trees around the rivers I’m fishing. Every few years I go through a purge, but I don’t toss them out. I put them in cheap fly boxes and stow them. Maybe when I’m dead the kids or grand kids will find use for them.
Fly boxes would be a nice video. Tacky vs foam, streamer boxes for big flies, big storage boxes, there is so many options but not many videos on them.
Deep Thoughts by Huge FlyFisherman. Jack Handy would be proud of you. Some pretty thought provoking musings though. I try to cut down what I take fishing, and re-organize my boxes frequently. But no matter what I've got on me, seems like I'm fishing the same 8-10 patterns all the time. Of course as soon as I only take those patterns with me, I'l get skunked and miss the piles of boxes I left in the vehicle.
Favorite fly fishing post by anyone, ever. Imperfect water, few fish, plenty of self doubt mixed with figuring things out and memories. I’m not as skilled and haven’t fished as much (tho ALOT), but I’ve been alone on the water and thought about all of the above. Thanks for the honesty and sharing a great video.
Ben, I could listen to you for hours, and I would really enjoy talking with you. You have the gift not many have. You take care of yourself and enjoy the family ( and I am sure you do. ) Time goes by so quickly so enjoy every moment 😉
I have a black gnat and ginger quill from the early eighties that I bought back when I was just learning to river fish. They had such beautifully tied duck quill wings I could never use them. Something you don't see much these days.
Yessah, let's see the boat box/fly box storage video. 👊🏼👍🏼🤙🏼
@hugeflyfisherman show us the new boat box, I want to see how you’ve set yours up and also see what earns a spot in your boat.
As far as flies go, like you said yourself about culling a couple hundred flies, I do the same thing the end of each season before making a list of what needs tied, replenished, or replaced, however, I put those flies in old cheap fly boxes or in leftover hook boxes and carry a box of giveaway flies with me anytime I’m on the water. When I see a new angler or kid that pulls out that small box of a dozen flies or have an angler inquire what was working for the day, I generally just gift them the entire box. I can’t tell you how many kids I’ve seen on the water that will stop me and just ask questions because they have always wanted to try fly fishing but either don’t have the gear, the funds, or a family member or mentor to teach them and a box of flies to one of those guys may be the spark that lights a fire under their train shot (tip of the hat and nod of approval to your double moonshot).
Anyway, just thought I would share the idea in the event there is anyone else out there like me that wants to ignite the passion in someone else.
Would also love to see a video about the flies that made your wall and hear why they are there, and another video of the flies you take with you when you’re on the water, as well as your dirty dozen, the dozen flies you couldn’t live without and if forced to only carry a dozen patterns for the rest of your life what makes the cut.
Yup, as a young fly fisher I once tip toed across the greasy lip of a waterfall on the Silver Fork American for an Elk Hair Caddis. This was my last one and it was by god killing them. You do what you gotta do. Like lie about the location of the waterfall.:)
I snagged a tree, scrambled up the shore to get it unstuck. I threw in into the water and it as immediately bit.
What is the purpose of a barrel swivel?
My reasons for using one are, it keeps the tippet from twisting but allows for movement of the flies and a main reason I use one is it allows me to make a connection point to drop down in tippet size drastically like from my main level leader to terminal tippet
Thank you!
@@toddhoward6745no problem
These videos are entertaining as hell, like getting into a flow of convo with a guide or more knowledgeable angler. Also yes on the fly organization. I have over a dozen fly boxes and organization is a mess
As always enjoyed the video. I've placed my "first time I caught" flys stuck in wine corks and labeled. May do a shadow box someday. Thanks!
There are so many reasons I would chase a fly and as many that I wouldn't. Cost is one, I'll chase a $20 fly down way easier then a $2 cheap fly I have 10 of. However the extent is in question as well. Ive left flies I was plum done with in an 8ft tree and went home lol and I've waded across a river for one that is doing very well for me.
I've been fishing alongside dippers for years but have never come across a nest. Badass birds! Thanks for sharing.
Great thoughts. There should be a store or site where we could send our old flies for someone else to try, I started tying several years ago and have tons of almost good flies that others may want or dress up just a bit. Thanks Ben
Hell yeah, fly boxes!! My water bottle just murdered my caddis box in the boat yesterday and I’m looking for something that’s modular for going from boat to wading that’s not bulky.
I love hearing fly fishing RUclipsrs "top ten" flies. If you only had a small box for a typical summer day on the Colorado what would be in it? I think I get what you were saying about your "precious" flies...I have 20 boxes or so filled with them! And I remember every nice fish I caught with each one.
@7:35 Sooooo True !!!! They seem to key in the "good ones" :)
We are lucky enough to travel and fish around the country. So, we have begun to separate flies by streams / rivers. Interestingly, enough year to year, the bite changes to different flies on the same water. We chase the bite and wined up with thousands of flies. For me, when they are chewed up or rusty, it's time to dispose of that bug.
I have a Hall of Fame fly box where I put flies that have provided a memorable day or fish.
I wonder if Down River is a reference to down range. Are the owners military?
Try putting your swivel within 18 inches on your top fly,I I think you get better contact to the level you’re trying to fish.
I"d be game for a video on fly boxes and organization. As a new fisherman, remembering what I have is difficult and believe if I had them organized and marked with some method, I'd be better off. Thanks!
Those Oros indicators make life a bit easier
My wall of fame is the pillar in my truck
I would like to see a video on fly boxes. I’ve been using the same ones for 16 years and they’re starting to show their age. I need to invest in some new ones.
My bone fish shrimp fly I retired it the day I caught my bone fish also my pb tarpon shrimp fly I also retired I tied both flies awesome video beautiful river and nice boat.
I have 20 or so flies that I tied on my first cheap vise and they all look terrible but I like to have them to compare to what I tie now.
I will go to great lengths to get my flies and lures back. Gotten into some pretty sketchy situations actually. Good chance it’s what kills me when I’m an old man chasing steelhead.
I have a shadow box on the wall with the Crankbaits that I won a National BASS tournament with so displaying a special ball definitely has merit.
I used to score my day of fishing based on the number of flies lost vs fish caught.
I still score my golf game that way (balls lost vs balls found).
It’s a good day of fishing when you get to use the same rig all day. One or two flies that are working consistently and you happen to not lose them. Maybe you’re not even catching that many fish but you’re getting into just enough to justify not switching things up
Boat bags are they way to go. Sometimes you just need two.. Stay Huge!
Yes to fly box video Ben
Now you can fit more beers in your back pack
What's with the mooning of the train?
What’s with you wondering about the mooning of the train?…dummy
Would love to see fly case videos and how to organize more efficient. And you if you ever are just gonna throw flies away, I know a guy (myself) who would gladly take them off your hands since I can't afford them at all now days.
A morning of reflection….i love it
I do retire flies and lures that have given me exceptional experiences. Someday I want to build a shadow box for them
8:15 your indicator looks just like a bobber... I fart in your general direction
For some reason, I have a special affliction for terrestrials. I never think I have enough.
I have my "special" flies in a coffee can and I keep telling myself that I am going to get a cool looking piece of driftwood and make a display. Oh by the way, do you still have the wooly bugger you caught your redfish on?
It’s hanging on the wall, pal.
If anyone ever wants to get rid of flies project healing waters fly fishing might be an option. Veterans who are new to the hobby could always use a few
Omg look at that bobber
I tied a damsel nymph my 7 yr old grandson caught his 1st trout on. Have the fly saved, gonna mount it in a picture frame with a pic of him and his fish. Pretty sure it will be around for decades after I have passed.
I wanted to watch a huge fly fisherman vid on a monday and I get a mental breakdown.
I can tell which flies in the box I tied because they look the worst. Strangely still seem to catch fish
Fly boxes video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Best opening ever!!!!! Get it?
Flyboxes? I would watch
I'm new spent $1000 on a recon /battenkill 8 weight . $1000 on my 6.5 creedmore and i can take down a elk 1000 yards away. Cabella's for my 3 and 5 weight $120 and $170, A expensive fly rod was a HUGE MISTAKE!!!!
I’ve been finding newbie’s in fly fishing and giving them my over abundance.
Hey great video. I've a fly that wins derby's and catches the biggest trout around here. 10lbs.plus. the question is is it worth the $3000 dollars each that they sell for. I say it's a pennies on the dollar. You are right in the subtle differences.
$3000 fly!?!? wtf are you talking about…?!?!
A good fly is one that takes less than 3 minutes to tie. At least, that's my criteria nowadays.
I build my own rods to save money…. Then spend 300 on a reel and another 100 on line lol.
Flybox vid pls
It’s already up on my website.
Im at the point ill clip off the fly im catching on and give it to someone whos not catching cause idk its a fly i can remake it
Loved 99% of that video. Didn't think it needed the mooning, you seem like a thoughtful, good guy, it doesn't seem to fit your personality. Could be me, maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy.
There no program like good will wear you can send unwanted flies and the giv them to the youth. Are something
Bobber, split shot, egg fly... you sure you're not a bait fisherman?
I have a million flies. I use 10 lol
Nymphing sucks.
Beer, innertubes and flies are all currency. I have some, you need one, I share with you. You have some, I need one, you share with me.
First
What a waste of time ! Watching and listening to this video 😢
*waste
LIKE THE SAYING GOES. ( FLIES ARE TIED FOR FISHERMEN NOT FOR FISH )
