I have owned one of these for quite a few years, and my impressions are mixed. Though the speaker is small, the sound is surprisingly good. It's great to listen reliably to stations on the other side of the world with no fade and no static. And the radio is not difficult or complicated to use once you have it set up. The problems are all in the build quality of the hardware and software. My first one worked a couple years, then the wireless stopped working. It really would not connect, even though the radio worked fine when plugged into ethernet. (Of yes, the radio has changed over the years, through the model number has not changed. The two copies of it I have both have a wired ethernet jack on the back and both of them have firmware that differs from the other one and also from the one you reviewed here.) When I called Crane to see about a repair, they said it would cost $50 plus shipping, or they would let me buy a replacement radio for $50 -- a no-brainer choice. So now I have two of them. And the ethernet is flaky on both of them. One radio's wireless continues to not work at all, and the other seems to work intermittently. The radios' wireless interface is 802.11g, a quite old version of the standard that has worked OK but may not be supported on new wireless routers. Also, the buttons on the front of the radios are not durable and some of them have stopped working entirely, so the remote control is even more important than you noted in your review. The pluses: Easy to use and great sound. The cons: poor build quality and flaky software.
For a second I was scratching my head but discovered as you said, there is a panel on the back (bottom center) that's covered under which would be the Ethernet port if it had one.
I just bought this one. This receiver is awesome! I can connect this through my home stereo system and even get WTWW on 5085 in stereo. Some of my favorite stations are carried on this radio. You review actually helped me to the decision of getting this receiver. Great job on the video. CCrane should actually pay you for this video.

Searching around I found a station at the Arctic Circle playing 30's and 40's BIG BAND. Possibilities are truly endless.

It can stream any url that direct links to the audio. So if the station is not found in the menu and you can direct link it, you can add it manually. Yes it does sports, news, talk radio...I use it for Coast to Coast on WHAS 840AM, and actually used it tonight to stream my local WBBM 780 news station so I could record it with my Audiomax that suffers from 9K tuning. Its fantastic. Podcasts it will do, but you have to add the links through Reciva.com , it does have a few built in the radio, BBC podcasts, and BlogTalkRadio.

Hi Todd Erbert, Would you recommend this little guy as a good first purchase choice, for people just starting to get into HD / WiFi / internet radio? Is there anything better out there to be considered in terms of sound quality or value that you feel is comparable or superior? Sound quality is the most important criteria for me along with best value for the money. Thanks.
todderbert just got this yesterday. I have a question. what is the registration code and how do I register the radio with receiva. this radio is great. I listened to art bell all day and then I found out he had died that day.
The code is in the CCWifi's Configuration Menu > Get Registration Key> *Key*. Sign up with Reciva, and there is a choice to add your device, this is where you enter that key. Boom. Done. I have some Pandora stations running, I'm a huge Roger Waters fan.
Your Welcome! Glad your enjoying yours. I use mine daily, recording 740 CFZM's "Theatre of the Mind" every evening. I used to try this with a regular radio, but sometimes the station would fade, ruining the show.
I too went through a couple of these before I got one where the wifi inside didn't die. It's been over a year since the last time I replaced it and it's been very solid ever since. I recommend this as being excellent for the price. I also have a couple of the Grace Digital (Encore and Encore+) which have a lot more features and have proven stable for all the years I had the first one so I bought a second. Still this is my radio that sits on my nightstand because of the small size and is almost perfectly reliable all the time. Third time is a charm.
Got interested in this for iheart radio since Jack FM in my region uses them and sangean through all of the iterations of internet radio have not supported them which sucks for those days you want that station but it’s raining outside, I use recieva a lot (Wfr-1, Wfr-28), it has some great options for creating custom directories so I can have all my old time radio stations , jazz stations and other stations organized

Technically, yes, if you have any local HD Radio subchannels in your area that simulcast their audio over the internet. Personally, I find it easier by far to either say "OK, Google, turn on KUER-HD2.", or turn it on in a rental car that has an HD Radio-enabled stereo system in case I want to add the Received Pronunciation dialect of a UK accent to my news.
Only when using the main jog knob to select. Its easy to grab the front corner with the same hand that is pushing the knob to help keep it from sliding. It's a small radio and easy to handle.
This is a dedicated device versus a do everything device. Having the larger on board speaker is handy. Your cell phone will be much more flexible, but you have to keep it close and have a separate blue tooth speaker to really enjoy the audio.
I wished this radio had Bluetooth or Chromecast Audio support for added functionality. You may want to look into the Grace Digital Mundo if you're more interested in Wifi Radio. I am currently using an iHome Color Changing Bluetooth Speaker (or the Orb) that has some decent sound and also has a FM tuner and wired aux port.
Great ideas, I picked this radio because of its simplicity. I have another for review. I just entered this genre of devices and hope to feature more as this channel grows.
todderbert It is definitely simplistic in use and great audio too. I also liked they added another special touch by putting a SW Stations section in the categories.

It is possible if someone is streaming it in a format that is usable by the radio. You add the radio stream manually and bingo you have it. Though someone would have to be running a server for it...and there is the question of lag...not good in a warned situation.
Wow, big question because both items are totally different. Here are some ideas to consider. Do you want a stand alone radio that requires no Wifi and will let you explore Ham operators and distant MW and SW stations and is portable so you can take it anywhere? or do you enjoy sitting at home with a table top radio that requires an internet connection to function, but has huge bonuses on the tons of content that can be discovered all over the states and world...crystal clear? I like both...if I had to choose between the two right now it would be the KA1103 because it's truly a take anywhere radio that can be used when the power goes out or when your off the grid. As another viewer mentioned the Tecsun PL-660 maybe a good upgrade to the 1103. I am planning on acquiring one of those soon. Of course there are many reviews out there about that radio.

Great excellent review todderbert, all your reviews are interesting, what an amazing way to listen to Radio worldwide with this Wifi Radio. Maybe I missed it but what about Sports Broadcasts? That is can you listen to Baseball, Football, Hockey, or is that protected by copyright?
I just don’t see the appeal. It isn’t a real radio (no Internet, no dice) and what it does do, you could do more easily with a better interface on a computer, phone or tablet (along with everything else those devices can do.) I appreciate the demo though and I’m glad you like it.
That's kind of how I felt until I took a chance on buying my Sangean WFR-28. Now *I LOVE IT.* 👍 Setting up the "radio" can take a little time and effort but, that's mainly due to having SO MANY stations / broadcasters to choose from. I actually find it easier to use and more enjoyable now than using a computer, phone, or tablet. The Sangean uses the Frontier Silicon service. They are currently showing that 34,000+ stations and 10,000+ podcasts are available. Here's their website: www.wifiradio-frontier.com/ BTW, the Sangean does contain a conventional FM radio. Cheers! Bob 😎
This radio is awesome but, needs 2 things...1) An internal battery so its portable. That would also omit the transformer wall plug necessity. A USB (type C) power port would be better. 2) FM or WB capability. I already think C.C. radios are great! I am also aware of their change from the Reciva platform to SkyTune. They also added an external Wi-Fi antenna. Smart move...Maybe a LCD screen would make things a little nicer...Thanks TB!
Thanks for the video! I have the Sangean WFR-28 and I LOVE IT! I liked it so much at home that I bought another one for my desk at work. IMHO, Wi-Fi Internet Radio is great. 👍 Link to the WFR-28 product page: www.sangean.com/products/product.asp?mid=123 Cheers! 😎

Great excellent review todderbert, all your reviews are interesting, what an amazing way to listen to Radio worldwide with this Wifi Radio. Maybe I missed it but what about Sports Broadcasts? That is can you listen to Baseball, Football, Hockey, or is that protected by copyright?
They may be copy protected. Usually the station will broadcast something else.
Burst-speak & educators don’t mix.. Still left hanging here over the use of this device.
Is this radio dead now!
ohhh and my cccrane ssb air band radio
too bad the server for these is dead.
Here's their website: www.wifiradio-frontier.com/
BTW, the Sangean does contain a conventional FM radio. Cheers!
Did anybody ever find out a way to make this radio workable again? Just picked one up at thrift store. Darn is this just an alarm clock now. Paid $9
Smaller than I thought
Too small I think
I wish we could get together and show each other our radios :0
I got a bunch!
Speaker Steve: show me yours I'll show you mine???🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂🤪😁
Thanks for the video! I have the Sangean WFR-28 and I LOVE IT! I liked it so much at home that I bought another one for my desk at work. IMHO, Wi-Fi Internet Radio is great. 👍

Cheers! 😎
I was going to buy that one first, but I wanted more of a table top unit, and didn't want another Sangean at the time :)
Full Join Internet Radio is more cool and portable.
