I know some people who were hoping, if John had to be paired with anyone, it would be one of the more alien females like Zhaan or later Chiana, to be somewhat different. Aeryn was just too much like an Earthling, in appearance at any rate, and it was too obvious and on the nose. I usually do an eyeroll when the male and female leads of a show are thrown together "just because" and think it's not always necessary to ALWAYS have a romance between characters on a show, but, watching Farscape -- well, Ben Browder and Claudia Black really DO have amazing chemistry.
As will be seen in later episodes, the handling of their relationship was done very well, I think, and it did really work. It actually had me smiling and rooting for them rather than wanting to jam a finger down my throat. Best onscreen couple in TV in my opinion.

Yeah, I think this is the first outstanding episode of the show. I love how many plot threads are going on at the same time and how the show manages to resolve them all in 50 minutes. There's some real character development here and it's an entertaining story.

Very insightful. Yes, that opening scense was incredible. So was the ending scene for a different reason. I'd say DNA Mad Scientsist was the first really quality episode but this is a good one.

Gillena was a good match for Crichton but she would not have posed any of the challenges or growth that Aeryn did.

This was about the time Farscape found its feet, the first few episodes were standard fare for the time (with some exceptions). I really liked the character moments in this episode and the glimpse behind the Peacekeeper facade of monolithic strength.
From what I recall, part of the controversy about Crichton and Aeryn was the worry about yet another paint by numbers type of romance. At the time every single show with a male and female lead would have them hook up, then the show would fall to bits. Fans wanted Farscape to be different.
Incidentally, years ago, I did read a fan fiction about what happened in an alternate reality where John ended up at the captain of a command carrier as seen in one of the alternate realities. The story did delve into the techs and ordinary people in PK society with Crichton working his way up the ranks and gathering supporters simply by treating people decently and getting results. It was very well done but as far as I know, the author never completed the story.

Thank you for those two pieces of information. Enlightening. That makes total sense about the relationship issue. I avoid fan fiction because it is usually dismally poor, but a "below decks" view of the Peacekeepers would be interesting, especially after the comic book story arc.

      @@FarscapeContinues No worries :)
As for the fan fiction. It was one of the best pieces of writing I ever saw at the time (Better than a lot of published novels now). It felt like it was written by an experienced author who either knew the back story or who had put a lot of thought into it.
A new instalment came out approximately each month before it suddenly stopped.
One point I liked was showing how inflexible Peacekeeper society had become by Crichton improving the hanger crew's performance simply by checking the regulations and realising their current working conditions were a result of emergency orders that had never been rescinded in thousands of cycles.
This was written before the Peacekeeper Wars and the revelation about what PKs used to be.
I felt it fit in I can imagine the PKs going into a state of emergency when the Eidelons vanished. Frantically trying to carry out their stated mission, ignoring the things that made them them until their society becomes so stratified it is incapable of changing.

    "UGhhhhuuh. Sorry. For. Interupting."
Aeyrn's catty attitude in this season one episode was perfect comedy building for her as a character going forward through the show.
We also really did get a lot of universe building with Rygel's story arc.
Durka, Aeryn, and Gilina give us a peek at the different people within the Peace Keepers and how their society is structured.
Personally my favorite part of this episode is the spooky ghost ship setting and how it sets up later that the Nebari are BAMF when its revealed they were the ones behind the Zelbinion's demise.

All great comments. I have always seen this episode as the one that establishes the promise of Farscape. The first six episodes are still better than other science fiction, but this is when the real action begins.
