Removing My Dead Vineyard ― Starting with the Vines

  • A year after killing the vines in my vineyard, I finally remove the vines. It took two days, but it was spread out over three or four due to rain. It was a bittersweet task as I knew the idiosyncrasies of every single vine, and it was sad to yank them out, but in the end, the bugs won. 😑

    Hi Mojo, that's a really sad story but I'm sure you did the right thing,there comes a time when you're just defeating the object, a sad day but I'm sure it's a load off your mind and at the end of the day there's only so many hours in the day.

      Thanks Larry! I hated to see it go, but it got to a point where it was taking so much time for no returns, that I just had to pull the plug. I still have the Dwarf Orchard though, so I'll spend a bit more time there 😊

    We do not have japanese beetles here so I have minimal pest pressure the only occasional bug here is sharpshooters only because someone brought some in on some fruit trees.

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  3 месяца назад +4

      Hopefully the Japanese Beetles never get to your area. I remember the first one was maybe five years ago(?) Nothing happened that year, but a vineyard about six miles away was completely decimated. It got worse every year, and only constant spraying would kinda stop them - but there was no stopping the hornets. I forgot to mention the Spotted Lanternfly is now making it's way into Wisconsin. 😑

    Where I live grapes are very expensive, we have the largest industry in the entire United States both Table and Wine grapes and prices are skyhigh, cheapest is 1800 a ton for less desirable grape varietals and the good ones that everyone wants are $3800-8500 a ton. Grapes are big money, we spent like $75,000 on grapes alone for the winery one year.
    If I had lived near you I would have taken your grapes just to keep them alive and planted and not see a vineyard get ripped up as I do home winemaking on top of commercial winemaking.

    Is that post damage from carpenter ants or not having post caps on them? I have always heard to put a pointed metal post cap on posts like that. I have no real world knowledge on whether or not that helps!

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  3 месяца назад +6

      It's from water. We don't have many carpenter ants around here, but if we did, I would have had them 😉 I actually found mushroom growing an a couple of the cross members. I had planned on putting piling caps on the posts, but couldn't find any small enough. I have a plan for the espalier fence that should work though 😊

    I empathize with your plight with pests. I'm cutting back on stonefruit trees because I simply cannot spray enough fungicide and insecticide to keep them alive long enough to be worth the effort. Furthermore, my body is becoming more sensitive to the sprays when I use the fruit. If I purchase grape juice from a winery to make wine, the resulting wine gives me a headache. And no, it is not the sulfites. I use sulfites in all my wines, but wine made fromy own minimally sprayed fruits, grapes, and berries are fine.
    I hand pick Japanese beetles and feed them to the chickens. However, I don't have a large vineyard.
    Going forward, if a tree dies I will bo longer replace it. I now have a set of hardy grapevines for my environment so I should be able to manage if I can keep the voles under control.

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  3 месяца назад +1

      Or Japanese beetles got into the thousands daily - no way to hand pick them. But the wasps were the worst. They would bite the grapes and wiggle aggressively until they made a hole, then lapped-up the juice. 😞
