The first Giant Schnauzers emerged from Swabia in the German state of Bavaria, and Württemberg in the 17th century.[4][7] These original Giant Schnauzers were considered a rough-coated version of the German pinscher breeds, and their hair was thought to help them withstand the harsh German winters and bites from vermin.

I was 2yo when my family bought a giant pepper salt shnauzer. He was my brother, best friend, body guard. When I was 3 I fell into the water, nobody noticed, but Lou was there, he jumped in immediately, I held on to him as he swam to the shore. I liked it so much, I learned to swim that summer, only to play with him. My buddy died when he was 13 years old and it was the saddest day of my life, I couldn't get myself to have another. I'm 40 now and now I'm thinking of getting one. Best dog you can have.

One of the fondest and most defining memories about this breed is:
I was 10 years old playing with some friends on the playground and suddenly some 16 year olds come around and bother us and bully us and we were frightened, so i called my mom. She came with her car, opened the passenger seat door and suddenly our Giant Schnauzer Paul shot out of it, took a defensive stance before us, showing his teeth growling like all hell is gonna break loose.
Next second those guys run off in panic with Paul actually chasing after them until they hid themselves inside of a apartement building behind a door. And as if he just wanted to make shure they are gone for good, he runs back to us after a few seconds and starts licking my face.
You have this breed, and you dont have to worry about your safety, your childrens safety or the safety of your property.

@@dvdgalutube In my experience no, my one year old Giant barks when necessary - someone at the door, stranger approaching and he senses apprehension, but he doesn't bark at other dogs or people when we are out walking. He can bark when he wants something - ball under couch or he wants you to play with him - but you can train him to limit barking.

I had a black standard schnauzer for 13 years, man looking those eyes at 3:55 made me cry like a baby, i remember him staying close to me quietly, protecting me and my family while always staying between me and the entrance in every place i was, i never trained him for guard or defense, i really think they are the best dogs among all breeds, they just have no flaws. Thank you for this great video.

Riezenshnauzer is my favourite breed, period! I had one for 11 years, well, not personally, he was the family pet, I was a kid when we got it. Extremely balanced dog - nothing scares him, he was great with the kids, we played in the schoolyard for years, never showed any sign of aggression towards kids, kids running all around him, screaming, petting him, no problem. Saved the life of my little brother when he was drowning in the sea, nothing bothers him, nothing can make him lose his temper... except dogs. If a male dog tries to growl or bark at him he was already on the ground and screaming.Everything ends for few seconds, didnt kill them or even bite them, just put them in place and assert his dominant status. Always dominated aggressive dogs, then they come quiet and friendly, then he can play with them like nothing has happened. He needed a hard hand to be obedient, lots of corrections and such, but he was a loving friend, very active, can run all day long, no problem, never bitten a human and when he gets lost he always found his way home and waited on our door. When he was 11 years he was active like when he was 3 years old. I still cherish our good times together and I will get a Riezenshnauzer again in the future, this time for training him for IPO and shit. These dogs are not for beginners, they will make your life miserable if they dont accept you as a leader. Other than that, they are verry attached to their family and are ok living in appartament, as long as you provide them with daily long walks.I mean, at least 3-4 hours a day out running, obedience training is a must too. Oh, and they need a lot of grooming, like, 2 times a week for 30 minutes grooming. These are the things you must consider before getting one.

Love, energy, devotion, compassion, fun, strength, self-confidence - everything in superior quality. When she came my 4 year old son was afraid and hiding from her. In couple of months they would slip together hugging. And we are looking for the second puppy now. Training her in Schutzhund (IPO).

Have been rescuing/adopting giants for decades, and they are all amazing dogs. They need a lot of good socializing and exercise. Not a dog that will make friends with strangers on the trail, with few exceptions. With good socialization strangers can pet and love on mine, but the giant isn't going to show any love back. Now family will be loved and protected. Most think they are lap dogs or will cuddle with you at all times.

    This man got it right.
they are, in case well bred, fantastic dogs with a great mentality.
Our Giant Schnauzer had a rough start in his live. (owner didn't knew what she got in her house and couldn't handle his temperament)
Since we have him times get rough a bit too but since he got understood that we are the Alpha's he is changed into a big fool.
He is now 7.5 years and dancing around like puppy.
when we walk him he never let you out of sight.
If we stand still he immediately comes next to you and he knows the regular guests. they can come to the house, not in until we are there. When he was 5.5 year we had him scanned for HD, and the vet thought he was 1.5 years.
I never want an other dog except the Dobermann my Partner wants.
They are equal to the owner, loyal till dead separates us......

@@DublinDapper I shake my head at people that say "there's no such thing" as a hypoallergenic dog. Hypoallergenic does not mean a dog doesn't produce allergies. Hypo means below normal or under, and allergen is obviously what gives people the allergic reaction. So hypoallergenic means that it produces below normal allergies than regular dogs with fur. So yes, as someone who severely suffers from allergic reactions from german shepherds and 90% of dogs, there are dogs that barely have an effect on me, making them hypoallergenic.

    • @DublinDapper
      @DublinDapper 5 лет назад +5

@@exaupaz1207 Keep shaking...There's no such thing as ahypoallergenic dog breed, although some individual dogs may cause fewer allergy symptoms than others. Many people think that pet allergies are caused by a dog's or cat's fur, but the real source of pet allergies is often a protein that's in the saliva and urine of dogs and cats. It's nothing to do with fur and you have no clue what your talking about..ignorant.

    • @davidw453

    • @animalobsessed1
      @animalobsessed1 5 лет назад +7

@@DublinDapper Allergens get stuck to the fur, and when the fur falls out and ends up everywhere, so do the allergens. This is why low-shedding dogs are easier on people with allergies, because the allergens are less likely to spread all over the place.
When people are severely allergic, even the small amount that gets spread by low-shedding dogs can still affect them. However, for the average allergic person, these dogs are as good as hypoallergenic. If it really made no difference, don't you think people with allergies would have noticed by now?

As an owner I can tell you these are high energy dogs, unlike most giant breeds these are more like owning a terrier, so when he said he is still a puppy I laughed cause he'll be a " puppy" for a long while. They are smart but if you aren't an active person don't get one. Also know they will bark to try to communicate with you and strangers which can be intimidating if you have guest over.

Abby Martinez are giants hypoallergenic? My husband is allergic to dogs but I've had poodles all my life and I'm ready for a change 😁

Mackenzie Packer they are considered hypoallergenic with extremely low shedding also make sure you have enough time to excercise they need lots way more then poodles

Question time: are giant Schnauzers good with family cats if raised around them? I'm looking for a protective dog to raise when living alone but will also own a small dog (chihuahua but a good dog) and a cat. Any advice or answer is appreciated.

A puppy, raised around cats and socialized and trained early(both by people and the cats), will be absolutely fine. I'd be pretty hesitant to introduce a grown Giant Schnauzer that had never interacted with cats to a household with cats in it, but if you're considering a protection dog, you should be starting with a pup anyway so you can go through the training process together.

Awesome, I have wanted one for so long since, I can't find a Black Russian Terrier anywhere close. I am going to get the Giant.

he is beautiful i lost my black mini schnauzer 2 yrs ago he was 12 and i'm thinking about getting another one never seen a Giant in person Roscoe was alittle hot headed and very protective of us hated strangers and that's what i want to change this time around i want my friends and family to be able to come around the dog. i might look into all 3 sizes and then make a choice i gotta go with this breed it's what i love. Thanks for sharing your story.

MsLeelee94 The three schnauzers aren't different sizes of the same dog. They are three different dogs that have different traits. Giants don't behave like minis at all.

Best breed for a family with mid size backyard. They need training where the owner and the dog teach eachother their needs, but once it's established the "leader" does not need to be around for the dog to follow commands and keep on their duty. The "velcro" comment is partially right, they are clingy but can be trained to stay away from areas and keep guard alone, even if there's no "barrier" other then the command. They love to play, their size allows for rough play but if raised around kids even males will be very forgiving.
Personally I am surprised how a breed this versatile is not more popular. It might be due to it requiring consistency and a charismatic leader.

    .
I have what have been referred to as "Toy Schnauzers", "Teacup Schnauzers", "Parti-Mix Schnauzers" (4-10 lbs); whatever they are, they have ALL the same characteristics that are used to describe the Giant Schnauzers. They are Loyal, Protective, "Velcro" Dogs!
    The males LOVE "Rough Play"!
My Schnauzers have been around Giant Schnauzers, and NONE of them seem to notice who's are bigger and who's smaller!
In fact, when one of the Giant Male Schnauzers came up to my 12 year old female Schnauzer (she's 4 lbs), she started to growl, and the Giant Schnauzer S-L-O-W-L-Y backed away, and went back to playing with her mate and their son (both "Toy" Schnauzers)!
Big or Small, I Love These Goofy, Happy, Playful, Loyal Dogs!
