My Giant saved my life when I was 6 years old and a guy tried to pull me into a van. Well, not pull, but he chatted me up then grabbed my hand and it was the end of the discussion for the dog. I didn't even tell my parents for a few years because I was worried they will be angry at him for attacking the guy so I hid it as a secret until I was maybe 10 or 11 and I realised what had ACTUALLY happened :-D Isn't this weird! It's been 30 years now he's gone and I still dream of him and miss him and sometimes hear him in the mornings before I am fully awake. I hear him jumping around being happy that we're about to go for a walk.
I am going to research the Giant Schnauzer more to see if the breed suits my lifestyle. I want to be sure that he/she gets enough exercise and is mentally stimulated enough. I don’t know that I would be exercising him/her enough, as I am hearing they need at least an hour of walk + additional excercise & mental stimulation daily. I refer to the Giant Schnauzer as the "hidden gem of the protection dog world". As you've stated, they are hypo allergenic, they don't shed, they don't look menacing, yet they are fantastic protection dogs. The main drawback is their coat maintenance and some have been known to be a bit more difficult to train compared to Doberman's, GSD's, etc.. They look very different when they are docked and cropped though they are beautiful either way.
Just as when Amstaffs& other pit types, & dobies, ears cropped, makes theme look more menacing, I like them docked & cropped, & also the standard & minis .

Read a review by someone out of the US Marines who trained dogs for the military. He basically said the best dogs for personal protection were Dobermans, Giant Schnauzers and German Shepherds. Malinois were a bit too small to stop a large individual and Rotties and Cane Corso too big and slow. A determining factor is that it must be able to be deployed out of a car window, since it would often be with you in the car. We have had Giants for 30 years and I love this breed. It's true, they don't moult seasonally but they do shed. We are always vacuuming up black, fur, dust bunnies every week or two, all year. They are worth this little issue, however. This breed wants your attention constantly and they are extremely loyal.

We have a 3 yo show line Giant female. She is VERY vigilant, protective, and territorial. We taught her scent work and a bunch of other jobs and she learned them instantly. High energy, high drive, a strong need to work, and extreme loyalty. Very smart. She is a LOT of dog but an amazing addition to our fam. The video emphasizes how cuddly they are, but Giants can actually be pretty aloof. The personality of a Giant is an interesting combination of independent, goofy, hard-working, proud. This is 100% not a dog for somebody who is absent or at work a lot. They need a lot of continuous training, exercise, and mental stimulation. They also need strong leadership.
Our Giant Schnauzers have all been incredible dogs. They love children and are very protective. Our current girl Freya gets anxious when the Grandkids are here because she can't be with all of them at the same time. Giant Schnauzers are highly sensitiv. They need a very clear surounding, not being harsh but clear with them. One has to be very friendly and very strict with them at the same time. Not a dog for beginners, but if you do it right a fantastic companion.
Very good and informative Video! The Riesenschnauzer is no Joke they are very good as Police K9 , Personal Protection, Rescue , Mantrailing , Apport , Obedience and all Sports where they can run and Pull like Canicross Bikejöring Skijöring etc. The working lines have many drive and will to please in combination with very good working mentality, they are strong, fast and have many endurance! Some of they are not so easy to handle and a working line is not good for a first time Owner, they need many exercises! Most of the Riesenschnauzer are very good with Kids but the owner must handle the Temperament! Many Riesenschnauzer have good hunting drive and kill Rats Cats Foxes! A very good all around working dog with better health than many other working breeds ! It gave different body types , some working females are only 25kg and males 30-35kg they are fast as a herder and some females have 35-40kg and males 40-50kg! My favorite is the lighter typ for working!
IIRC my uncle had a giant schnauzer back in the '70s. He was a veterinarian. Don't quote me on this but I think it was because they are the biggest breed that's a universal doggie blood donor. I don't know whether he was trained or it came naturally but his dog had wonderful manners around strangers.
Always love your video's my wife and I actually bought a Great Pyrenees alongside our Rottweiler due in part to your very informative video on the Pyrenees, keep up the great videos!
I have a 3 yo female. I sleep like a baby. Nothing and I mean nothing gets by this dog. Very loyal dog. Just has to be near their owners, so if u don’t like Velcro dogs the GS isn’t for you. Thank you for informing public about this breed. They aren’t for everyone.
I have a 32lb mini Schnauzer ,its cool to see alot of the personality traits carry over from their larger brethren . They are very smart and trainable as stated , and so loving and attention driven .
Doubly awesome... Bach & dogs! You also usually play some great music choices (as evidenced by your intro too) and this show was no exception with some good classical works here! Played a lot of Brandenburg concertos in orchestras as a violinist and this one, #4, was one of my favorites, #3 being my ultimate. I love your show and all the featured dogs & wolves, & wolfdogs! It's hard being dogless since I can't have one in my living situation so I really enjoy watching these:)
I love GS', and between myself and my family we've had 6 now. That said...I've never seen someone assume they were fuzzy bundles of love, they look intimidating. I must be a region thing, bc GS hair styles range from werewolf to fu manchu...and a fully shaved one looks like a pit/lab mix of some type.
Thank you Annika once again such informative video ,but to tell you the truth I was so mesmerized by your beauty that I was mostly seeing and hearing your relaxing voice 🌹🌹💗💗
Wow, I have to say I first fell in love with the beautiful yellow eyes on the wolf in your videos intro., But I think that is more than I want to deal with right now. These giant schnauzers are beautiful, the young female with the big stand up ears is adorable .A large male might be the protection capable dog I need to be a friend to my female golden retriever named BabyDoll, who runs to me for protection, but she is wonderful at finding pheasant, quail and rabbits. I will have to see what is available here in the states. Thanks for sharing.
I will tell you that SCHNAUZERS are the greatest dog, such a joy, clean..I had a Champion Miniature Salt n Pepper Schnauzer and She went with me everywhere. ALWAYS minded Mommy..to a fault..and I never found a hair of hers in my bed. I would have the giant at the right time, after I get another small one. (They were bred UP which means the miniatures have no health problems and live long..much longer than large dogs typically do..since we've been feeding them SHT for so long BC the dogfood companies have LIED THRU THEIR TEETH to us. DUPED US!!. Dr. Marty dog food and similar Others who understand this, will make your dog much healthier, stronger and live wayy longer if you feed them right. starting with their Real food!
There's a GS rescue and some great breeders in the US. Research is key. The Great breeders are very protective of their lines and may not do business with you if they think their puppies will be abused, neglected. When my children were younger ours kept them from being victims a few times.
I love your videos & always look forward to a new one. I’m sure you get so many requests for different breeds. . . but would love to see one on the Airedale Terriers.
High quality and educational approach to this video. Super professional and very deep Q&A too. Expert interview skill and very informative outcome. Liked. Subbed. Thank you.
We have a giant Schnauzer, and she’s by far the smartest and most beautiful dog we’ve ever owned. And while she doesn’t have “formal” training, we’ve worked with her extensively. And she naturally knows what to do when it comes to protecting our family. She’s fun loving and a wonderful family pet, but she also takes her job very seriously when she feels like it’s necessary. She’s all business then.
Alot of dogs can be aggressive it all depends on working lines and showlines if u want a oversized with lot of health issues u get a showline if u want working line u get a working line
I had two giant schnauzers. People coming on my property were terrified by them because they looked mean, even when they weren't barking. Absolutely nobody messed with me when I had them anywhere near me. They were great for intimidating Latter Day Saints off my property. They wouldn't even get out of the car and stopped coming around to try to convert me. The only other thing that drove them off was when the came to my room in college and asked if they could talk to me about their religion. I said sure as long as I could get equal time discussing my religion. They got excited, said sure and asked what my religion was. I only said one word, "satanism." Their grins turned to panic as they fled my floor in the dorm. They never came back to my floor. I was a hero to the others on the floor. To be honest, I'd rather have my Giants.
if you love these dogs and are interested, the Sgt. Garcia videos are quite interesting. These dogs are used in prisons...they are quite less barky than the other breed protection dogs. it's a great breed of dog, these are. Thank you for this video!
I don't think it was fair to refer to a standard poodle as a giant useless lapdog , standard poodles are highly intuitive and adapt to the wants and needs of the owners , if you pick the correct standard poodle out of the litter , you will actually have a well balanced instinctive dog with very good protection instincts. Great video , glad to see you cover the Giant , the gentleman's guard dog.
Molting??? That's an interesting way of putting it. My dogs are also nonMoulting but just like a schnauzer of any size, they need a lot of regular clipping and scissoring to keep their face and body profile. Looking over my grooming table
Many people will tell you how “human” these dogs are, when they join your family, they are unforgettable. We still remember the loss of our giant as the most painful even after several more dogs. It sounds dramatic but he really was more like a sibling than a pet.
I have a Mini Schnauzer that will tear somebodies ass up if they threaten me or my (his) family. He’s our best friend in the world and he protects us well. He doesn’t have the size, strength and raw power of a Giant Schnauzer but he’s got the same heart.
Anneka, thanks for this! I just found my next dog, thanks to this video. I had long since heard of the Giant Schnauzer breed, and while I knew it was likely a dog that could be SOMEWHAT capable as a guard dog, I had no idea just HOW formidable/impressive this breed really is!! And really the biggest impediment to me holding off and not getting a dog was I have a number of family members (my mom, niece, etc.) who are ok around hypo-allergenic dogs, but can't be around most other dog breeds (which again is primarily why I have held off on buying one, because both the Doberman and Rhodesian Ridgeback are not hypo-allergenic). And because I also want my need breed to be superb guard dogs (as the Doberman and RR references above would indicate), I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the GS is BOTH hypo-allergenic AND a guard dog 'second to none' according to the trainer in the video. And what also helped clinch it for me is that the breed is known to love people/family/friends, and after watching the dogs in the video interact with you SO enthusiastically, that's when I knew I had found my next dog. Again, thanks a LOT!! :)

They don’t shed … so you must keep them combed and brushed out so they don’t become a matted dirty mess… love this breed but they require grooming… including nail trims and ear cleaning… why wasn’t this included in the description of owning one? Only correct to include that info… the giants I groom? Are matted messes when they come in and most of the time need to be shaved. Please include maintenance of coat and health when you’re doing videos… thanks🐾🐾❣️
Loved this breed for years, and I'd love to get one, but the closest we've gotten is two miniature mixes. Nonetheless, despite their genetic differences there must be something inherent in all schnauzer breeds that makes them great watch dogs because even our mini mixes weren't ones for anybody to go unnoticed. Dare I say one of them was possibly just as dangerous to mess with as one of these giants, she wasn't like normal dogs wanting to go for hands, arms, legs, she could jump quite high very easily and her favorite target seemed to be the face. We always had to watch her with strangers and if she didn't trust/like you, she'd let you know in no uncertain terms. Those individuals were under constant stare, forced into a cornered if they tried to move, and in the case with one friend who taunted her, we had to keep her on a leash if they were around because she would try to constantly lunge at them. Others who they sensed posed no harm, they'd either be at their feet or fighting to get on their lap to get petted.
I like emm! They look kinda more intimidating with the cropped ears & docked tail like a Doberman they look a different Dog. Either way they are no lapdog type Poodle!
Grew up with a police trained giant Schauzer, he was always very aware of his surroundings, saved my grandma once from a mugger, we didn't even know, we were just outside waiting for her to arrive and he got really agitated and took off his own leesh and bolted behind a building and pinned down the guy that had a knife to my gandma's neck. He was the best, now I have a giant girl, she's not trained for protection just normal dog training and she's an oversized cat and extremely friendly, haha. I love this breed.

Lovely breed. Probably among the best I've seen in many aspects.
Good popularisation and informational video. Love how the working side of the the giant schnauzers is highlighted and shown by short clips.
Amazing dogs
As someone from Bavaria / Munich, I already had such a dog, they are very pleasant and really don't cause allergies, which I think is great
Whatta big adorable palooka🥰.
Wow! What an awesome breed!
Hi Anneka, thank you very much for sharing this very interesting video! 👍👍👍😍
Where did you get a 32lb mini? I would love a larger mini. But so many are 15lb or smaller. And 30lbs would be just perfect.
I love all your shows Anneka! It's so professional. I see it like a program o can't never miss! You're great person also!
Had a Giant named Sasha as well. Best behaved guard dog I've ever seen.
Now that you've done the Giant Schnauzer I'd love to see you have an episode on the Bouvier!
A show clipped, docked, & cropped, is a handsome looking GS, not a straggly , like ones shown here !
Thank you Annika once again such informative video ,but to tell you the truth I was so mesmerized by your beauty that I was mostly seeing and hearing your relaxing voice 🌹🌹💗💗
THANK U for this comprehensive, informative vid. Brava!!
I love schnauzers :)
Yes my dogs have been on the keto pet sanctuary veterinarian design diet for years now raw hamburger and broccoli and chia seeds
There's a GS rescue and some great breeders in the US. Research is key. The Great breeders are very protective of their lines and may not do business with you if they think their puppies will be abused, neglected. When my children were younger ours kept them from being victims a few times.
Athena may be the cutest puppy to ever live.
Love them so much. Thank you for this. Just love your channel.
Could you do a video on the working Black Russian Terrier, and also the working Bouvier de Flanders. Thank you!
Never knew they could be aggressive. The ones I have meet have been super gentle and friendly
To be honest, I'd rather have my Giants.
i want this dog. beauitful and intelligent
17:23 that lady loves what she does she looks so happy
One of my favorite breeds
So awesome thank you Animal watch.
Wonderful dog
Great segment. I have added this breed to my short list of Akita, Bernese, to own
Wow. What a beautiful dog.
I love this!❤️💜
beautiful dog
Most underrated protection dog
if you love these dogs and are interested, the Sgt. Garcia videos are quite interesting. These dogs are used in prisons...they are quite less barky than the other breed protection dogs. it's a great breed of dog, these are. Thank you for this video!
Best dog ever love mine
Convenient and easy to hang papers on. Black Russian Terrier + Bouvier + Schnauzer.
Another enjoyable video, great work!
so beautiful, excellent video
Can’t wait to get my pup, exact same breeding as Zeus 🤞
I have a Miniature, Standard, and a Giant Schnauzer best dogs ever.
My uncle who lives in Maine is a pretty big duck hunter, he said his standard poodle is the best gun dog he’s ever seen.
Yeah good point. Poodles are capable dogs.
The standard poodle is so underrated they are extremely smart, protective, intuitive, kind.
One of my favorite Dogs Thank you. Please do a video on the great Airedale terrier. I love your channel.
I have a rescued stray dog, no visible breed detectable in her and she barks at the gate too🤣Greetings from Guatemala!
damn seeing a schnauzer this big is actually kind of intimidating lmao never thought a schnauzer would look intimidating i want one now
What is that music playing at 3:05? I know I should know it. Is it the Brandenburg Concertos?
I had a mixed schnauzer, being guardian dogs explain so much now! Wish I knew it then
Please do the same show for the Airedale. . .a truly amazing dog.
Lol I'm honestly shocked.. looks are deceiving, I own a corso myself and these dogs are a whole different rodeo. Very cool video
They have a 550 psi bite force. Serious dog.
Love the thumbnail 1 big dog 2 fantastic puppies😂😍
Divino))) ❤🐺., bien entrenado un Amor 🐾🐾👍
Molting??? That's an interesting way of putting it. My dogs are also nonMoulting but just like a schnauzer of any size, they need a lot of regular clipping and scissoring to keep their face and body profile. Looking over my grooming table
Love it!!
Many people will tell you how “human” these dogs are, when they join your family, they are unforgettable. We still remember the loss of our giant as the most painful even after several more dogs. It sounds dramatic but he really was more like a sibling than a pet.
Gorgeous 😍🥰❤️
2:06 I agree, giant schnauzers look like a giant cutie but they are though and can fight back
Handsome dogs.
they are incredible faimly dog
Thank you animal watch thank you.. i have giant schnauzer before its amazing episode.. very powerful dog.. please do episode about dogue de bordeaux... We realy start know dogs more because of animal watch🇱🇧🇱🇧🇱🇧 thank you from lebanon🇱🇧🇱🇧🇱🇧
It’s Tank! I’ve wondered what breed of dog is on FBI: International! Loved this!
I have a Bouvier and a GS. Good luck trying to steal my Tulips !
Many Years ago, when i still had my (really Goofy) Pitbull, we allways meet a Lady with a female giant Schnauzer (i allways thougt so....) and one day this "giant schnauzer" came to me and i just took her for a very big hug :) The owner was shocked ! I asked her why, because giant schnauzer are so nice dogs .... Then she told me: " Oh, it's not a giant schnauzer, she's a russian Terrier !!!!" " Uuuuupppppsss " But well, that's typical me......:)
