While most of the paintings I see are executed in oil or acrylic on canvas, wood or board, every now and again I receive a truly unique type of painting: a reverse on glass. And with unique works come interesting problems and inventive solutions.
For this video we follow along the conservation of a reverse on glass of the sinking of the Titanic.
Hi folks... so about those audio outages that accidentally got left in. I mean I could say that it was a deliberate choice to make a comment about the difficulty of the work, or to humanize myself, or better yet, to make an abstract point about the reversible nature of conservation... but they were in fact mistakes and I just flat out didn’t catch them. So my apologies. That said, I am NOT a paint. 🤦♂️
Dont worrry! Now we know you are actually human
Dude, your painting on 100+ year old glass backwards using mirrors while trying not to destroy paint that's thinner than a human hair..... I think we'll manage a few audio issues. 🤣🤣🤣
Couldn’t care less. Love your videos, they are so calming after a stressful day in this crazy town world.
No problem! I found them kind of funny🤗 Thank you for the top quality videos and narration. 💯
Dyou mind telling me the name of the music during your retouching please ?! I've fallen in love with it

Julian really left his recording mistakes in the voiceover to thematically tie in with the difficulty of this restoration. What a treasure.
:o thats smart
“I'm not an artist“
I beg to differ. Art comes in many forms and conserving art and making videos about it, compassionate and prolific, is an art form.
was going through the comments to see if someone else would say this. It takes real consistency during "normal videos" for these mistakes to stand out meaningfully and be interpreted as such.
I know right? He always makes an effort to give us the most intelligent and interesting voiceovers possible, even though we would all find it interesting if he just explained what he was doing without any other thought
I mean he does that every video though...
I would trust this guy to restore the actual Titanic
I wouldn't. He's a painting conservator, not a ship wright.
But everything he does is reversible, so the titanic would just sink again because it isn't his job to change the original intent of the designer....
BRUH a JOKE lol
With his attention to detail it will take 300 years.
But the Titanic will be as new!

Every time he retouches the painting I'm like, "the colors don't even match the painting, I can totally see the difference!" Then he does some kind of magic and it's perfect and matching.
The paint changes color as it dries, or the glass changes the intensity of the paint. Just a guess.
Water colors tend to become a bit lighter as they dry. Most colors change a bit, it's normal. Just like wet surfaces appear darker to us than dry ones. And he actually has to keep that in mind as he matches the color. Basically he doesn't match the color per se, he has to match what the color will look like when it's dried. So he has to know how the color changes as it dries. Conservation really is an art in and of itself.
@@raenfox Thanks for the explanation.
@@raenfox Yep, this is what he's talking about when he says a bit about wondering what you were thinking the next day. Use a medium for years, and you can still have that moment of "okay, that is exactly not the color I wanted there" once it fully dries. Knowing what the paint will be, as opposed to what it is when it goes in, is part of the skill you pay a painter for having, in whatever medium. I think in oils most, because the wretchedly long drying times means you can wait weeks to figure out that, no, it doesnt work at all with that shade there. Its why I paint in ink. If I screw it up, i know right away.
@@Exiled.New.Yorker i cannot handle ink at all, im a very slow and meticulous kind of worker so oil paints are the medium that i generally excel in.

Interesting facts about RMS Titanic:
-once people were in the water they didn't die by drowning. Most of them had life belts on or were holding something to keep them afloat. Most people died from hypothermia.
-Titanic actually had more life boats than were required by law at the time. Life boats were thought of more like ferries to take people to an already waiting rescue ship.
-most of the people on board didn't even feel Titanic hit the iceberg.
-steerage class aboard Titanic was comparable to second or even first class on other ships.
-there was a group from Ireland consisting of 14 people on Titanic. Only 3 survived.
-the old couple that were laying in bed together in the movie? They were real people. They were the owners of the first Macy's.
-over two thirds of Titanic's passengers died, almost all of them second and third class.
-the first life boats to leave Titanic weren't even full to capacity.
-the ship was actively sinking from 11:40pm to 2:20am.
-Titanic actually is at the bottom of the ocean in two halves. It snapped as the "front" kept taking on water faster than the "back". The "back" was fully out of the water when it snapped, and when it did finally snap all of the lights and the power went out. Then the "back" half leveled out before sinking straight down.
-when the ship snapped in half, all of the lights went out. So Titanic finished sinking in the dark.
-the morning of April twelfth there was actually supposed to be a life boat drill. For unknown reasons it didn't happen.
-Titanic was one of three sister ships. The Olympic and the Britannic. All of them sank.
-the crew knew Titanic was going to sink. The architect had told them so after four watertight chambers of sixteen had been flooded. The capacity for Titanic to flood these chambers and keep afloat was four chambers.
-there was actually a ship nearby that was on the way to aid Titanic. The Carpathian. However it was too far away to get to Titanic before it sank.
-the orchestra aboard Titanic allegedly kept playing as Titanic was sinking to keep passengers calm. Wallace Hartley is quoted "gentlemen, it has been an honor and a privilege playing with you tonight".
Thanks so much for these facts
Minor correction: The Titanic sistership, the Olympic didn't sink. She has an accident in 1911, collided with a small navy ship but was just out of service and because it needed parts, they took the parts from the Titanic, which pushed it's maiden voyage to April 1912. The Olympic, served in World War I as a troupe carrier ship. It was the only ocean liner that sunk a German submarine. It rammed it, when it tried to torpedo her. After the war she returned to service as a passenger liner, until the 1937, when she was finally scrapped. Because her long service time and being the only ship of the three to not sink, she was named "Old reliable".
@@KrisztinaH. it’s kinda funny to think about the Olympic sinking the sub. Straight up pulled a No U.

Your audience might find it interesting that the technique of working from the back with a mirror on the other side is how tapestry weavers work.
Tapestry is hand-woven on a vertical loom and the weaver works from the back of the textile. A mirror is placed on the opposite side of the loom, so that the weaver, by looking through the warp threads, can see if the piece is following the cartoon of the design.
Just an interesting titbit for those unaware.
very interesting, do you know when this technique started? was it used in medieval tapestries, or are those made in a completely different way?
@@estherbunny Not OP, but as a guess, since early substitutes for mirrors included sufficiently polished metal, they probably did something fairly similar. Lord help you if you were working with similar colors, though. I can't imagine the trouble copper, a fairly cheap and commonly used material, would be for colour perception.
My respect for tapestry workers has gone higher than mount Everest .

The British Museum in London had a 1600's glass mosaic table with the same issue (part of the surface had buckled). They used the same technique: painstakingly injecting minute amounts of resin on the reverse side. This is the second time I've seen this process. Very cool.

I've never seen Titanic either. However, I did have an engineer tell me why the metal of the ship fail when they hit the iceberg. They had included too much sulfur in the steel, the steel was too brittle because of it, and the freezing temperatures made it even more brittle.
Interesting!
I've also heard that the reason they didn't see the iceberg sooner was not only because of them ignoring the reports, but also because the previous captain of the ship had been replaced relatively close to when the ship was scheduled to leave. The previous captain took the key to the box that held the binoculars with him, so the people searching for icebergs were having to do it with just their eyes.
Did you know the Titanic was on fire long before it set out? It weakened the side of the ship where the iceberg hit
So. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong

The mona lisa is actually kinda impossible to restore now. Leonardo used to experiment a lot with his paintings and with the mona lisa, he used a lot of glazes (technique in which very thin layers of paint diluted with a lot of solvents is applied). Conservators are afraid that of they try they might strip the delicate glazes and you know how much important the mona lisa is in the public for it to be damaged. If you want to see the clearer versions, there are certain Lisa's by vinci disciples as well. They actually show the vibrant colours that Leonardo would have originally intended.
Momin Rafiqui oh wow, that’s really fascinating! I had no idea!
Put the eyebrows back
I'd be happy if she went to the bowls of the louvre and there was a dozen or so selfie spots set up 😅
There is so much neglected just because she is around.
A side note: Years ago I discovered what I believe is a little spider painted on Mona Lisa's sleeve. I tried to learn more. An art conservator told me I was wrong. Could even have been Julian? It's so clearly hidden in plain sight to my eye, like a little joke, but others said if there were a spider it would have been seen/described eons ago.
You probably won’t ever see this, but I really feel the need to thank you for sacrificing an easier approach of painting to be able to film those incredible shots! It totally paid off, and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say I appreciate you letting us see how it was done!
It seems this was the hardest retouching you’ve done on the channel to date. Thank you for enduring the hassle of having cameras in the way for our enjoyment!
Yesss sooo right about the cameras, i think about it all the time, he has to stop to adjust the cameras multiple times too probably...
I am ASTONISHED. literally astonished you even took this job on. Its so extraordinary. World class work.
All of your work is so soothing and almost like meditation.
This however was anxiety-inducing. I was so overwhelmed for you.
Give me endless hours of scraping any day.
The sponsorship transitions are smoother than my brain.

I SCREAMED
14:30 It was sooo satisfying to see that damn little piece finally enter its correct position!
I'd have given up twice at that point.
I dont even have a business or a passion but you’re making me want to open a website for the hell of it.
This looked like a total nightmare, I can't imagine taking on such a project.
This is the first time I almost felt sorry for him.
You can feel his frustration on that tiny little spec of paint swimming across the resin
I live in the city that the Titanic set sail in England. We have a museum and I've grown up learning a lot about it. Its very interesting but incredibly heart wrenching. I watch boats and cruise ships sail out of our waters all the time, and can imagine a time when the Titanic sailed out the same way many years ago
I was so tense throughout this whole thing. Every stage of this job was so frustrating.
At this point it would be easier for Julian to build a time machine to just go back and get the originals.
That's an appropriate comment for this channel, right?
Just keep watching this channel and wait. Julian will prob build that time machine one day if it is needed to restore a painting.
Yeah. That chop saw and battery drill will come out and I’ll tell us, he is not going to bill the client for the time machine as it will become a tool for the workshop
If a time machine can be built out of Belgian linen, washikozo, and archival adhesives, we have hope.
I’ve got a picture in my head. There is a flash of light and a six foot high archival box appears in the corner of a Florentine studio. Julian steps out. “Leonardo, we need to talk!”
So, can we put "Reverse on Glass Painting" on the same level as "Polyurethan on an Oil Painting" as our worst villains?
N-Silva Brazil forgot rabbit skin adhesive
@@theholypopechodeii4367 and staples, don't forget the staples.
And contact cement lmao
I don't think so... reverse on glass painting is a painting technique, it was the artist's choice, how they chose to make their art. If it's hard to work with, that's just part of conservation work.
Polyurethane on an oil painting is how a conservator chose to handle someone else's art, compromising future conservation work and thus the painting's longevity.
Ethically, it's an entire different kettle of fish
(also OLÁ :D)
his ad transitions are the smoothest thing i've witnessed this decade
"It's about to suffer the same fate as the Titanic"
Too soon Julian.
Do I Know You it’s been 108 years-
@@brookemckeever2613 you missed the point lol
😂 😂. Although the 108 year comment was equally as hilarious for obvious reasons.
If you're feeling frustrated, step away, take a break, catch your breath, come back when you're focused
THE BEST LIFE LESSON
It’s really amazing that you could take such a fragile, crumbling piece of art and make it whole again! Not to mention, backwards, in a mirror! I couldn’t do such tedious work. Well done, Julian!
I almost don't like being so early. Its like opening all your gifts on Christmas eve and having nothing to do on the morning
Actually in some countries you open presents on Christmas eve
The smoothest, slickest, most stealthy ad lead-ins on RUclips. Bravo...
"I'm not a paint" t-shirt.
I have never felt so much anxiety during one of your videos. Even watching the polyurethane video. The slow cracking of the paint as you slowly tackle the task of conserving the artwork... Ooftah it just gives me the heebee-jeebees

10:00 Pulse back down---kinda.
OK That's my cardio exercise for the day.
As soon as this ended, I put my cardiologist on speed dial.
I'm one of the Titanic enthusiasts you mentioned. I have always been fascinated by the sinking, and remember when the movie came out in middle school. We got to see it with our school, and then I went with my friends probably another 30 times. I have memorabilia and got to see the exhibit twice now. They give you a card at the beginning with a name and some information, and at the end you see whether or not you survived. Both times I died. This project seemed really daunting, the paint was so delicate!! Job well done. :-)
"now, I'm not a painting--"
WHAT!
I love the inclusions of imperfections in your voice overs. it's like easter eggs
