      @CborgMega 3 года назад +57

      @@leobz12 Well, let's not take the general words out of their context. If I remember correctly, he said that in letter(s) addressed to French politicians and military leaders, trying to impress upon those the importance of supporting Romania and its national goals. If anything, Berthelot for sure was not looking to Romania as to an African country, to be spoiled of riches and exploited, but as to a regional ally of France, a Latin country and a pillar of French influence in a region where already German and Russian interests were competing. I believe we should grant General Berthelot plenty of excuses for his words (which today are seen carrying more malicious meanings than in his time!), also in the name of the French officers who fought and died alongside Romanian troops during the battles of 1917-1918.

    • @Berik99

      Kun created a form of government that had it's social basis laid out on the workers....in an agricultural country. He had little to no support from the beginning, only that he was seen as a strong leader who could prevent the utter destruction of the nation.

    • @wojciechwilkanowski4472
      @wojciechwilkanowski4472 5 лет назад +31

      I don't think it was doomed for that reason necessarily. Kun had a surprisingly wide range of support; since the Entente failed to help the Karolyi govt deal with Hungary's neighbours, Hungarians increasingly became sympathetic to the Bolsheviks due to the possibility of a Russian alliance. Conservatives actually supported the communists at first; the consensus was 'rather Bolshevism than being partitioned'. Even Charles IV (the last king) expressed such a sentiment in a conversation with a British officer.
      The reason it was doomed, in my opinion, was because it could not stop the invasions of its neighbours. The only thing that could would be to accept their territorial demands, which Horthy was willing to do (whereas Karolyi and Kun were not).

    • @Berik99
      @Berik99 5 лет назад +13

      @@wojciechwilkanowski4472 That is true, but that support would only have lasted as long as the war did. As soon as the war was over, and Kun tries to implement the communist policies (nationalization, collectivization, abolishment of royal titles) he would have lost the support from the peasants, the aristocrats, and the army. It wasn't really Kun or Bolshevism the people supported. It was a strong central power that resisted the enemies, and defended Hungary. They would have accepted anything, be that left or right winged.

      i find it fascinating how bad it got at this time. Especially with how dumb the leadership seems at times.
      I mean I know there were no easy answers but it seems at times that the people in charge (especially the 4 main allied powers) seem to go out of their way to make the decision that instead of stabilizing things like they hope, will only make the locales even angrier and set things up for a more violent and harder second world war.
      And is it just me or does it seem like every time a French or British official comments on these events happening in Germany and the East, they always sound tone death, smug, and a bit racist?

    • @Jon.A.Scholt
      @Jon.A.Scholt 5 лет назад +5

      @@Nostripe361 I've been thinking about the 1848 revolutions when I hear in these videos what was happening in 1919. I think Habsburgs and, after the creation of the Dual Monarchy, with help from the Hungarians did such a great job of keeping any nascent nationalism working in their favor, playing nationalities off each other by offering political concessions. Once the war was over it was just a total free for all and it seems clear nobody had any idea of how crazy it would get. In those parts of Europe that developed more nationally after 1848 the situation was more controlled; well, somewhat at least. It obviously got pretty hairy in Germany.
      And it terms on entente smugness and racism, I think that is manifest. The smugness also certainly comes from drinking the victory Kool Aid which probably made their belief in their exceptionslism even more insufferable.

    • @Bogdan-uu5oe
      @Bogdan-uu5oe 5 лет назад +9

      @@Jon.A.Scholt Dual Monarchy, didn't worked very well, Hungarians didn't trusted Austrians and vice versa. Austrians were more willingly to trade language and political rights for stability, Hungarians opted to intensify the Magyarization (no minority schools after primary school) and this didn't made Romanians and Slovaks very happy . Also they were very against United States of Greater Austria for autonomy based on minorities.
      Also since the 13th century the Orthodox Church started to be seen as heretical in Hungary (including Transylvania), Romanians were put in a bad position. Because of that in the 19th century in Transylvania, most of lower class in Transylvania was composed from Romanians and the Magyar landlords didn't wanted to make concessions because they were losing money, because of the cheap Romanian workforce. The fight between rich and poor got a national connotation.
      So because of those Romanians in Transylvania had a lot of hatred for their Hungarian masters, also the Hungarians didn't cared that much on the problem, they were too focused to be equal to Austrians.
      So in 1919 Hungarians ended with a blinded by hatred and revenge minority that wanted to cause as much damage to Hungary as possible.

They don't understand democracy. They want to be "great". They are unfit to rule others. Long live Slovakia, Rumania, descendants of the Romans, and Serbia! @@busterbiloxi3833 I can partly agree to this. Many of my Hungarian friends seem to have no understanding of democracy. They seem to like democracy only when it favors them. They long for a kind of big daddy, authoritarian leader who is capable of ruling the nation with an iron fist and make it great again. This mentality has nothing to do with democracy overall. That is why people like Orban thrive in Hungary, despite the fact Hungarians know that he is a very corrupt individual. Other than that they are fine when they do not get self-indulged in historical nonsense. Their tendency to scrap even part of their history just because it does not suit their modern political narrative is kinda dangerous though.

      @@Kalimdor199Menegroth I'm from Hungary and in some ways i'm agree.
      In Hungary most of the people vote to the party what promise the most to them. One of the biggest "invention" of the Orban regime is that they give "bonus" money to the pensioners in every year (5000-10000 huf, around 15-30 €), instead of give more pensions, and when elections came they could say them, that if they dont vote to their candidates, they will not get more money. And their jackpot is the immigrant criris. The Fidesz (Orban's party) spent billions of hungarian forints since 2015 to anti immigrant and anti George Soros and anti EU propaganda, makeing a country more like Russia than the EU.
      The other half of the people is very divided, and many of the opposition partys is de facto in Orban's pocket (like the socialist party, the "MSZP", which destroyed the chances to an opposition collaboration in the 2018 election).
      And the biggest "opposition" party is the biggest reason why Orban is very popular. Its head (Gyurcsany Ferenc) was the prime minister of Hungary. He cheated the elections, and when the people started demonstrateing against him, he smashed up them with the police, there are some interesting videos about this incident in youtube, like an old men even started a T-34 tank in one of these events.

      @@valentinovidiucornea4525 Not really! Their power was too limited for that! The masters were the Austrians in this state. They didn't want too many conflicts to arise between the nations that they ruled. That's why they made sure that there wasn't such a significant Hungarianization. For the rest, I wouldn't call Austria an empire. Because an empire is always to be defined in comparison to the other empires. With this size Austria would have been an empire in the 17th century but not in the 19th and 20th centuries. In this Zaitlater the empires were significantly larger. Just because the Austrians oppressed some nations doesn't make them an empire. The Punjabis of Pakistan rule about 50 other nations in Pakistan and no one calls Pakistan an empire for that. In terms of area, Pakistan is also larger with 796,095 km² than Austria with 675,964 km² around 1900.
      By the way, that was the reason why the Austrians started World War I. They wanted to feel more like an empire by conquering most of the Balkans. This is not a joke. The First World War took place because of the inferiority complex of the Austrians, who felt that they controlled too small an area. The Germans then supported the Austrians and provoked a war with the Russians and French out of the same inferiority complex. The Germans did have an empire, but only for a pathetic 33 years when they got hold of the first colonies. But compared to the real British Empire, that was pathetic. That is why they took part in the Austrian war and wanted to gain large territories by defeating the Russians and French. That almost worked too. After the victory against the Russians in 1917 and the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the Germans had conquered large territories in Eastern Europe. A large-scale colonization was planned. But then the Germans had bad luck and finally lost the war together with the Austrians. The Ottomans were also involved. In fact, they also took part in this war for the same reasons of inferiority complex. The Ottoman empire has shrunk a lot and the Ottomans thought that their empire had become much too small. So areas should be recaptured. Off to war. The problem was that they were on the losing side and then shrink a lot instead of expanding like the Germans and Austrians shrink a lot too.
      Then in addition to the inferiority complexes of their small size compared to the empires of the world, the Germans then also had the inferiority complex of being the losers of the great war. This inferiority complex was really unhealthy for the Germans and for Europe. Because for the Germans it was again time for the next wars for to conquer territories again where the inferiority complex was then additionally extremely increased by a grotesque racism with a megalomaniacal feeling of superiority against everyone. The result of this ludicrous inferiority complex was 55 million deaths as a result of various genocides and various wars. Whereby, if one looks more closely, the Austrians, as a voluntary part of Germany, were once again involved in the the inferiority complex madness. This time The Turks, the former Ottomans, were smarter than that and didn't take part in this the inferiority complex madness.
      In any case, it was really the case that the two world wars were actually fought because ofabsurd inferiority complexes.

      After the Hungarian bloodshed of our war of independence - with the help of Russia - we lived from 1849, we Hungarians in the era of passive resistance. This meant that Hungarian - usually a noble man - did not hold office in the state-Austrian office. Our country was like a colony. The Czechs, Slovaks, Ruthenians, Romanians in Hungary, Serbs and Croats also remained oppressed. It was said then that the minorities were rewarded with what the Hungarians were punishing. After several European military defeats of the Austrian emperor, he was forced to ease the repression and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was established by "compromise".
      Hungary had an independent government (except the Ministry of War, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs), an independent parliament - in which minority advocates were present, but the laws passed had to be passed by the king, who was also the Austrian emperor. Education in Hungary was under Hungarian control. Compulsory schooling was introduced at this time. (Everyone had to write, read, count - this required them to complete a 2-4 grade school - of course there were those who did not study because it was no longer compulsory to go to school from the age of 10 - many dropped out of school because they had to work. fully implement the law.)
      It was so until the dissolution of the empire until 1920!

    • @CborgMega
      @CborgMega 4 года назад +32

      @@cyrkestuffl9051 Yep, I get it, you point out that going to school was compulsory in Hungary, at least up to the age of 10. Nevertheless, you say truthfully that "education in Hungary was under Hungarian control". And Hungarian politicians were not generous, they just understood that the schooling system was needed to transform into Magyars as many members of the other nations living in Hungary as possible. Especially those who would go beyond 4 grades. Same with the military draft, or the employment in the public administration. And yes, it was so until 1919, when Magyarization officially died!
      Now, since you seem quite amazed by what people less knowledgeable would consider generosity from the part of Hungarians towards the other nations under their domination, let me share with you some details of historical importance for Romanians in Transylvania - that should give you some context to the situation in which my co-nationals lived back then. So, even before 1848, but especially after the "compromise" of 1867, Romanians living under Hungarian domination used to give their newborn kids Latin-inspired names: Ovidiu, Silvian, Claudiu, Aurelian, Augustin, Ciprian (Cyprianus), Eustatiu (Eustatius)... The reason? Because such names were difficult, if not impossible to Magyarize! By comparison, other Romanian standard names, like Gheorghe, Ion, Petre, Mihai, Nicolae, Stefan, Anton etc. were quite easy to transform into Magyar names. How was this done? Via the schooling system, or by the Hungarian-controlled administration, or by the military draft... All Romanians passing through schooling system, or the military draft, or being accepted to work for the administration ended up with documents in which their names were Magyarized (not to mention the official records of the institutions issuing the documents...). You mentioned 1848. Do you know how was Magyarized, in the school, the name of Avram Iancu, the Romanian leader of the 1848 Revolution in Transylvania? Iank Abraham!
      You are praising the Hungarian law on education introduced by the Parliament in Budapest - which, by all testimonies from that epoch, including from observers outside Hungary (Frenchmen, Britons, Germans) was never implemented in the benefit of others than Magyars themselves. In fact, by the Education law of 1868, the Magyar language was introduced as compulsory even in the religious schools - those operated by the Orthodox and Greek-Catholic Churches in Transylvania (most of their members being Romanians). During the government of Tizsa Kálmán, the laws of 1879 şi 1883 made Magyar language mandatory in all primary schools. In 1891, the Csaki Law makes Hungarian mandatory in kindergartens. In the Apponyi Law of 1907, article 12 stated that the government has the right to close down any Romanian school, if the decision is based on higher state interests... After this law was adopted, no less that 500 Romanian schools in Transylvania were closed, up to 1910.
      Part of the Hungarian strategy against Romanian language in Transylvania was the 1897 law regarding Magyarization of the names of Romanian towns and villages in Transylvania. How was this done? Usually, the termination „u” was deleted from the original names, to make them sound Hungarian. For example, places like Albacu were renamed Albac and then Fehervölgy, Buciumu became Bucium then Bucsóny, Câmpeniu - Cîmpeni and then Topánfalva, Sohodolu became Sohodol then Aranzosszohodol, Cărpinişiu became Cărpiniş then Abrudkarpenyes, Lăpuşu became Lăpuş then Lepus and so on. Same with names of individuals: Dumitru Furduiu was modified in Fúrdui Demeter, Ioan Furduiu became Fúrdui Ianoş, Nicolae Furduiu - Fúrdui Miklos and so on! As a consequence, even today, many Romanians with ancestors in Transylvania have such names without the termination in "u", since their forefathers had their names Magyarized!
      This was not something done by mistake or some local initiatives of zealous Magyar clerks. In 1898, Hungarian authorities have issued for Transylvanian administrative service a book describing in very details how the Romanian names must be translated in Hungarian ones. An original of this “manual” can be seen at Cluj Napoca University Library. The book name is “HOGY MAGYAROSITSUK A VEZETEKNEVEKET" and it was written by Telekes Simon. In 1908, the Magyar authorities released a more detailed and bigger manual, based on another similar book written by Anton Husza-Herskovitz in 1907.
      As you may see, this was the real Hungarian system of oppression and Magyarization before WWI. And we, Romanians, we know it well. Also this is general knowledge for Serbs, Czechs, Slovaks, Ruthenes etc.. But, by all means, you may think these are lies and propaganda, as many Magyars of today do believe...

    Horthy would go on to restore the Kingdom of Hungary but instead of a king, Horthy was elected regent for life. He mostly stayed out of internal political affairs until the lead up to World War II, when he finally had the opportunity to reclaim the lost territories.
    Fun Fact: Hungary wasn’t the only “kingdom without a king” in 20th century Europe. In 1948, Francisco Franco, who had led a fascist regime known as the Spanish State to that point, restored the Kingdom of Spain, and took a position as regent for life very similar to Horthy’s. Spain remained a “kingdom without a king” until 1975.
    It could also be argued, although less so, that from 1918-1949 Germany was a “kingdom without a king” as well, as the state continued to be known as the German Realm (Greater German Realm from 1943-45) through 1949. However during the monarchical days it was more commonly known as the “German Imperial Realm” unofficially, and the usage of this decidedly ended in 1918 with the fall of the monarchy, and no regency ever occurred.
