The way I found this channel was original through one screen puzzles in smm1 by seanhip, it's always awesome seeing you play these, brings back so many memories, and proves that just because your a scientist doesn't mean you're smart
Overthinking it I expect. Carl was worried about it despawning the 1-up if he went in a door and just missed the fact that once he already collected it there was no reason he couldn't re-enter the doors to respawn things.
To give a programmer's perspective on what might be happening with the mushroom at 33:00... Usually in tile-based games, when a collision occurs, you tend to re-align the object's x or y coordinates with the edge of the tile it collided with. My guess is that when the mushroom first spawns and has not hit a wall yet, it's x-coordinate is ever so slightly different. Which is then barely enough to see the cloud collision underneath it before it drops too low and falls through. Why the coordinate is different when the mushroom spawns can be many reasons. But my guess would be that something called the "tick delta time" (which is responsible for making movement the same speed/time independant of framerate...) might be ever so slightly disturbed as a level loads after entering a door. As more things tends to happen and you might get a tiny framerate spike. Or it could simply end up spawning with a more perfect rounded number than the collision might end up calculating.
mushrooms spawn going towards the right. the mushrooms in the hint door all started right but those two hit the wall instantly without you noticing. a mushroom has a slower speed because of bonk but very minimal

Absolutely awesome to see you playing puzzles again Carl! I started making puzzles because of seanhip and watching your playthroughs, so I am so glad to see you playing more again. I know you've said it's hard to find good puzzle creators, but hopefully this will go to show that there are endless puzzles out there yet to be found. Much love, karate
Such a great first puzzle. The main mechanic is enough for it to be a good puzzle, but it gives the satisfaction of everything being multi-purpose and coming together nicely.
"This is good decheese." But you could still go through the door and get a P-Switch to complete the level when you did that. Oh hey, he figured it out, that he's not smart, that is
That end troll on the first puzzle was great. Carl was soooooo convinced that he won, only to go through the door and get dunked on. Lol. I don't know who was more shocked, Carl or I.
A lot of people in the comments seem to think the mushroom's speed changes, but that's not the case (as far as I am aware) so I'm going to clarify to the best of my understanding what's actually going on: It depends on where the mushroom starts. The mushroom moves at a set speed, distance per frame, so sometimes it can position itself perfectly above that pit, and sometimes it just hops straight over. When the regular mushroom spawns when you exit the door, it's centered on the block, and lined up such that it can gracefully cruise over the pit. When it bonks the left wall collision puts it directly against the wall: not centered. It looks very similar but it's a subtle difference that the level was designed around. As for the 1-up, the parachute positioned it such that it would fall in the pit regardless.
I think that first one can be optimized further by collecting the four coins and entering the door during the p-switch. You can then melt the top block by catching the fireball with the pow, and the pow wave will drop the coin. This should combine the wait times of the p-switch and the fireball.
Watching Carl solve puzzles is a trial of patience. 30 seconds in to the puzzle, I've got a pretty good idea of how to go about solving it, and I've got to wait through like 10 minutes of *edited* footage before Carl catches up. Then he's moments away from finishing it and goes "oh, I get it (he doesn't get it), but it's too late now" and restarts it.
the mushroom that hasn't hit any walls are a little floaty when they fly over the gaps. the mushroom that has hit a wall actually accelerates and doesn't glide over the gaps and so it falls. Moon physics has this effect.
For some reason on the 2nd puzzle level, it is as if the mushroom loses the tiniest bit of speed if it runs into a wall, which makes it unable to clear that gap. Which, after seeing so many levels taking advantage of weird mechanics, oversights and interactions, I don't find that surprising.
if mushroom has gone left it can't clear the gap. Notice how neither of the ones in the hint cleared the gap but didn't bonk anything, while the one going right skipped the hole.
it's not bonk, it's direction based. In the hint room, the mushroom on the bottom right falls in the pit without ever bonking. It just moves left. Edit: unless standig still counts as bonking, (or starting up against a wall on the right)
Yay puzzles again! At this point your videos have basicaly become my saturday morning cartoons. Not sure if you're the hero or the goofy villain though ^^
A much better Carl Troll would have been to have a 1-Up in the hint room for him to collect, knowing Carl wouldn't have gone into the cheese until after having tortured himself with the puzzle.
The mushrooms not clearing the gap was direction based despite you insisting it wasn't, it's just that is the mushroom had ever moved left since spawning it won't clear the gap, the hint room showed you that
Damn I’ve really missed the puzzles, you kinda just transitioned from puzzles to troll levels with mm2 but I really hope we see more puzzles in the future they are defo my favourite videos from you :P
