    Peoples results with teleconverters, especially the 2x vary a great deal, and it comes down to how you use them. Firstly they need a great main lens, like the 70-200 z. Then you need great light to get the best out of them. Good handholding technique / stable platform also works wonders. But by far the biggest differences between people who love and hate teleconverters, is people who use the 2x tc to try and photograph a subject that is far too far away and then heavily crop the image in post. In this case you have the wrong focal length lens, either buy a longer lens or practise better fieldcraft to get closer to your intended subject. I have seen, countless times, photographers putting on a tc to try and get a little bit closer to a tiny subject that is clearly far too far away to be captured. they then immediately zoom in on the back screen to inspect this tiny dot of a bird and wonder why there is no detail. If you use a tc as intended such as to fill the frame (say 50%) with your subject then they can be a superb addition to your camera bag. Used in this way my z9, 70-200z and 2xtc show very little image degradation from the 70-200 is used bare.

    so a year later. I got the z 2xTC as a stop-gap to give me some reach ahead of a longer z. Now we have the 100-400 zoom and a 400mm prime -- both can use it, tho the prime at £14k is way out of my reach. Call me an enthusiastic amateur. I also sold the F 200-500 which in fact, due to its weight, I rarely used. The z 70-200 is a dream,. light enough to be a carry around and super sharp. AFAIK ALL teleconverters tend to soften the image. The 1.4 is amazing, yet I'm really pleased with the images I get.

    • @HamerReviews
      @HamerReviews  2 года назад +2

      Nice one, the 100-400 looks tempting but I like my 200-500 too much haha.
      I would have loved to do some follow up videos - they are still in the works but honestly the last 6 months has been a bit of a roller coaster.
      I realise that TCs all soften but the 1.4 is almost imperceptible which is mad.
      I’m going to try and do more testing with the 2.0. I’ve got lots of good photos with it but for me I really want to do an analytical video on it - just need to find the time 😩

      As I said in the video, I'm still working on my exact opinion on the 2.0 Z, but it's in no way as good as the 1.4 which is nothing short of stunning. You just can't tell it's on the lens!
      The other option if you need reach is the 200-500 F mount, which I think is superb as well!

    I have the Nikkor Z 70-200 mm f/2.8 S which replaced my Tamron 70-200 mm G2 since it struggles to focus when mounted on my Z6. The Tamron build quality was not as good as the Nikon. I bought the Tamron last November 2019 and brought it with me to the Galapagos. The markings for the buttons on the lens started to fade, and some were already hard to read. I was very disappointed. My experiences with third party lenses are not great so far. I'll be sticking with the main brands from now on. The Z 70-200 mm f/2.8 S is an amazing lens. It is really sharp and the autofocus is fast and silent. Build quality is very good as well. I also got the Z 1.4 TC. However, I was not able to use it since I didn't realize until I'm on the field that I have to upgrade the firmware on the Z6 to be able to use it. I was thinking of getting the 2X tele as well to make the 70-200 mm be a 140-400 mm f/5.6 and hoping the lens will become my wildlife lens with a small form factor. I saw a couple of reviews that are giving it a very good review, but I am still skeptical. And your review is very helpful. I leaning towards the F-mount 500 mm f/5.6 PF with its size and weight. And as a prime lens, it should be sharp and with very good contrast. I guess I'll wait some more. I'm glad the 1.4 TC is getting great reviews. I updated the firmware on the Z6 and I will have a chance to test it out soon.

    • @HamerReviews
      @HamerReviews  4 года назад +3

      Thanks for your comment, I hope you enjoy your new gear! The quality of the 70-200 2.8 S is second to none.
      I think if you need super telephoto, the 500mm PF would be the best best, and then maybe the 200-500 which is a very versatile very sharp lens.
      The 2.0 Z might be OK, but I need to spend much more time with it in better conditions. The upcoming 100-400 with 1.4 TC might be a good choice too?
      The firmware thing is an annoyance isn't it, I've had that too!
      I hope you enjoy the 1.4, it's a great teleconverter and perfect combo with the 70-200.

    Very well explained video !
    I am exactly at the point where I should take a decision :
    1) should I buy one Z-TC20x ?
    2) should I buy an used 200-500 f/5.6 & FTZ ? (plenty are avaiable for good price)
    3) shoud I wait upcoming 100-400 or better 200-600 ?
    My experience with TC20iii was so bad in the past (D850 & 300 / 500 PF). I was loosing so much sharpness. AF was quiet difficult with 500 PF in low light condition.
    Considering the high price tag of this Z-TC20iii, it is better to be excellent. Based on your review, I am not sure it deserve this price ...

      To answer your questions:
      1) should I buy one Z-TC20x
      I think only you can choose that, I personally think the 1.4 is absolutely worth it, but the 2.0 I'm not sure, perhaps rent it or test it out - assuming you have the 70-200 2.8 S
      2) should I buy an used 200-500 f/5.6 & FTZ ? (plenty are avaiable for good price)
      I think this is a fantastic combo and it works great for me, you can check out the review on my channel here: ruclips.net/video/7eSRgVxbyiw/видео.html
      3) shoud I wait upcoming 100-400 or better 200-600 ?
      It depends, they will be good but I doubt as cost effective as the 200-500 (though Nikon could surprise us all) but it all depends on when you need the lenses? It could be that they don't come out till late next year...
      If you have the 500 PF I'd stick with that and maybe the TC 1.4 III but I don't think the 2.0 Z is going to be that much better on Z mount.
      And just remember that the Z teleconverters will only work with Z mount lenses. Not F mount ones.

      @@HamerReviews Many thanks for your answers and comments.
      I own the fabulous Z 70-200 f72.8 S and it's fantastic when use with Z-TC14x and my Z6ii. Focal length almost reach 300 mm at f/4 which is still nice even in low light condition. Nevertheless, I am still missing few hundreds mm to be more close to my subjects. I am tempted by the 200-500 F/5.6 with FTZ adapter but I am not so keen to invest in F mount lens anymore, especialy after I sold all my F mount gears.
      I will probably follow your advice and rent for a few days a Z-TC20x. This will give me enough inputs to take my decision.

    Very informative! I am only now trying my Nikkor Z 70-200 mm with (newly unboxed) Nikon Teleconverter 2.0x using auto-focus (which, according to the Nikon website is an acceptable mode). Do you know why the message "Either no lens is attached, or the attached lens is a non-CPU lens. To shoot with a non-CPU lens, change the shooting mode to "P", "S", "A", or "M"" gets displayed? I have the 2.0X. I'm by no means a pro, but it seems to me the issue is that you're putting it on one of the most impressive lenses there is, and so it's always going to feel like more of a trade-off than if the lens wasn't so good to begin with! The 70-200Z without a TC is just a joy to use, I got the TC because of nothing more than convenience, and I'm not earning money from my photos so it's just less to carry round for the times I might need a little more reach - it's an expensive indulgence for sure but I don't regret it (yet). :-)

    • @HamerReviews
      @HamerReviews  3 года назад +1

      Absolutely, it's a valid point. The 70-200 2.8S is absolutely sublime! I think though, that there's such a disparity between the 1.4 and 2.0 and that's my issue. That being said, I need to look into the 2.0 in more detail. My opinion my change when shooting in more ideal conditions.

  • @JustVodka
    @JustVodka 4 года назад +2

    I also have the TC-2.0x since early September in The Netherlands. And I agree it makes the images soft. The result is better than cropping/enlarging the image. But I do wonder about what the result would be when using the TC-1.4x with cropping/enlarging and compare it to a shot with the TC-2.0x. If that difference is minimal enough I might buy an TC-1.4x and enjoy the extra light that comes in through the slightly wider aperture as well.

    • @KarenVaisman1
      @KarenVaisman1 4 года назад

      If someone can test the tc 1.4x with a z7 or 7zii and crop compared to the tc 2.0x I think that would be a great comparison for all those in the market for the best quality and smallest form factor. I'd love to see a video or sample shots!

    • @JustVodka
      @JustVodka 4 года назад

      @@HamerReviews Since the images on the Z6(ii) also look softer when using the TC-2.0x when compared to TC-1.4x or no TC I think it's safe to say the sharpness of the Z mount 70-200mm with the TC-2.0x is well below the 24mpix resolution of the Z6(ii). Therefor I think it still might be a valid comparison between no TC, 1.4 and 2.0 on the Z6 system when enlarging to the 100% size of the TC-2.0x output. Even when the sharpness of the TC-1.4x would exceed the resolution of the Z6 but not the resolution of the Z7.

Copy the NEF file to a folder, then right click on it and select PROPERTIES. Ricci is also a Nikon UK employee. So as much as you might think is critique is thorough, it’s certainly not unbiased. As such, rather than trusting someone who works for Nikon, I’d rather make my own mind up thanks.

      I'm still in doubt, even after ordering (not getting...) the 2.0
      When it comes to reviews with different opinions: why the hell trust one over the other just because you don't like what one says?? I'd say, don't look at any review but grab a brochure from the supplier.
      I prefer honest reviews. Certainty when they're not bashing a product, manufacturer or other reviewer.
      In short: thanks!
      But now I'm in doubt to cancel the 2.0 order and select the 1.4
      Or no TC at all...
      Since the 70-200 is excellent, I don't want to ruin sharpness in the long range.

      @@Hart-en-Ziel Hi Peter, thanks for your comment.
      So I have had more time with the 2.0 Z, frustratingly not in ideal conditions. I think it might be better than I initially expected, but you do need the available light to match. I'm still finding it easier to get successful results with the 200-500 F5.6 at the moment, but I question whether that's because I'm more uses to it? One the UK lockdown ends I'll get out and take photos in better conditions and record my follow up video. I'd advise keeping your preorder, my logic being that you shouldn't lose much if you sell it on eBay if it turns out you don't like the results. Whereas getting another 2.0 if you aren't satisfied with 280mm could take a very long time.
      I hope that helps, and please do follow me to support the channel, it really helps me out!
