Great review. Thanks for the examples, I was on the fence and it looks like I found one at a local shop and will be picking it up this weekend. Your review relieved me of my sharpness concerns with the teleconverter.
Great review. I wish you had compared one more scenario: 200mm at 2x in Lightroom versus 400mm (with teleconverter) at one to one. This would tell us if the teleconverter gave more resolution than using the base lens and then enlarging the image. Sometimes converters can cause more loss in image sharpness than a base lens with magnification in post.
@Joseph Nuzzo: I guess you still do have the images right? So can you maybe upload the 70-200+TC2.0 at 400mm (so fully zoomed in) and the 70-200mm only at 200mm? Than we could check that ourselves :)
Definitely should compare the 200mm with TC-2.0X (400mm) vs the 200mm cropped in to match the field of view to show us how good the new x2 teleconverter is compared to its predecesor and if it's really a viable option now.
@@vickosis I bought the 2x TC today and tested it on my Z 70-200/2.8. The difference between no TC and digital crop VS TC and no crop is huge. You get a lot of more detail with the TC.
good review. I have both and also find at 400mm the lens is very sharp still. It's excellent. I'm waiting for the longer focal length lenses, but we're a year at least away, which is why I got the TC2. I have no F lenses.
Great detailed review. I think the 2X, Z Mount teleconverter is well worth investing in, for the Z mount 70-200 f2.8 lens. Thanks for your help Joe. 👍😎📸👋
It'll be interesting to see if the corners fare as well, but promising results. For more control outside, you could flag the chart and use a strobe. This would make your life easier in post and give a more consistent result. Thanks for going to the trouble and getting this out so soon. Lots of folks interested in this. My 1.4 should be delivered today, and hoping for the 2.0 soon. The 70-200mm S is fantastic and these converters will make it more useful for birding and such.
Yes I think I'll sell my 200-500 and get this 70-200 and 2.0TC instead...a lot more usability, faster autofocus, and the sharpness with the TC is breathtaking!
Great job on a very practical review! With improvements in sharpness at smaller apertures, it opens things up for landscape pics as well, when you need a little more magnification. Still not sure if I'll go for the 1.4x or 2x, but I'm now confident both will do a solid job. Thanks, Joseph!
Thanks for the review. I'm looking to get the 70-200 to replace my Tamron G2 version and I'm trying decide if it would be worth trading in the 200-500 and getting the teleconverter to replace the extra reach which I will lose. I do mostly wildlife, birds in flight, etc.
Joe - Do you plan on making a responsiveness vs. latency test? Aside from sharpness, I think the other factor that might affect a buying decision is if the TC, at 2.x, negatively impacts focus responsiveness (ie, is it hunting more or is it up to par with the lens' mechanism). Thanks a bundle for sharing your findings.
thank you very much for this test series. Ive literally sold all my D850 + F mount lenses and gone with Z7 II + 24-200 lens (also 14-30) and although as a lanscape photographer I think these 2 lenses cover my needs - and you are correct in that as yet no Z mount 400mm yet; so a converter was my next browse. NICE work here .... I think you have demonstrated that its prety good - so its now on my wish list :) I occassionaly dip into wild life so a x2 converter will pos be added to my bag.
nice presentation even if i prefer to see birds than target :-) i have a z6ii and a Z 70-200 F/2.8. Does it make a 140-400 or only 280-400 ? doesn't it work on Z20mm, Z35mm, Z50mm, Z85mm, Z24-70 F/2.8 ??? You mentioned 1 stop so F/2.8 becomes F/4 not F/5.6. correct ?
If you bought the 2x teleconverter you would have a 140 to 400 at f/5.6. 1 stop of light loss would be the 1.4 tele and both ONLY work with the Z 70-200 f/2.8 lens at this time. It is the physical construction of the lens that creates the constraint.
If they can make a 2x magnifier, why can’t they make a 0.5x magnifier? Would turn a 70-200 into a 35-100 plus gain a stop of light if I understand it correctly. That would make it so much easier to have 1 go-to lens with a couple of converters
In my opinion, I think that the sharpening products in Lightroom, Topaz, or PS are more than capable of restoring any loss in sharpness. Thanks for watching!
I just got the 200-400mm Nikon Z mount lens..I also bought this 2x z mount converter and the lens doesn't communicate with my z6 camera...what is the problem??
"The Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x can turn a telephoto lens into a macro-style powerhouse. It maintains the close focusing capability of NIKKOR Z lenses while enlarging the reproduction ratio by 2.0x that of the main lens. When used with NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, for example, you can zoom in to 400mm from just 3.28 feet away to reveal the tiniest details."
Thank you for the really good review. I was just wondering if the tc affects to the lens’ T-stop value as the spider chart looks systematically darker in the sample images. Is someone able to answer to this?
Yes, less light thru lens with the TC. That's the nature of all TCs. Video creator should have adjusted shutter speed by one or two stops for apples to apples comparison.
It's a lot of money, not much change out of £600 here in the UK. Maybe they will do some deals like they did with the F mount 200 - 500. when they sold the 1.4TC and lens together, along with cashback. I didn't really want to sell my 200-500, but might if Nikon bring out a Z mount 100 - 600.
Iv watched alot of youtube videos explaining that the 2.0 teleconverter z produces alot less image quality then 1.4 teleconverter z? Can you attest to that
I do not have a 1.4 and I don't really see the reason to. It gives only marginally more magnification. Turns the 200 into 280 at the long side. Not worth it in my opinion.
Do i understand it right that i can use this 2.0x Converter with a Nikon Z 7 with the 24 - 70 mm f / 4 ? That would make my Kit Lens 48 - 140 mm f / 4 ? By the way i am german Not the best English 🤭 And grest Channel i will Sub 👍🏽🍀
I've been in situations shooting concerts or sports for the press where we were stuck so far away we need the extra reach and then a crop. So for me, it is always in my bag. It really just depends on the situation and the distance.
Hi David - thatnks for watching and commenting. The price of the teleconverter (and lenses) is substantial. So it should not come with a dish towel for a case. If you bought any other brand it would come with a cushioned protective case. That is why it is a sore spot for many including myself.
Personally, I own it because it doubles the length of my lens without carrying around a second lens that would cost $2500 or more. But I shoot professionally so it makes a lot of sense for me. If you don't ever need a 400mm lens, than it isn't right for you. I have been in situations where I suddenly needed it and got shots that other people did not. There will be other lenses in the future that use this teleconverter as well. So it is a personal decision.
@@ShutterSpeak I have no argument with the versatility of the converter JUST the fact it is ONLY compatible with 70 200 a $2000 plus lens and no idea what if any future lenses will be compatible. as a retired individual, I can just plop down 2000 plus bucks and then add the converter to cost. it's a one lens wonder for the foreseeable future
IMO, the 2.0x really isn't for the Z 70-200 f2.8. Its just the only lens available now that can potentially use it. Its really for the longer reach primes (if they ever come). I can see using a Z 70-200 f2.8 with the 1.4x, but not with the 2.0x. You are better off waiting for the Z 100-400 if you need beyond 280mm. Its not a personal choice. The Z 100-400 will just be better, and you really don't give up that much on the wider end. The Z 100-400 will also probably be fine with the 1.4x, as will the Z 200-600. But with the 2.0x not really. That TC is really just for the long reach primes. Zero reason to buy it right now.
@@KungPowEnterFist When I was shooting for the press the 2.0 tele was always a great compliment to the 70-200. The same holds true in the mirrorless world. It is light weight, easy to carry, and can double the length of the lens. Additionally, there are no long reach primes at all on the lens roadmap, so I wouldn't wait for that. Just my thoughts.
