  • Would Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon Work as a game? This has been a question asked on many occasions. Crash 4 just came out on PS5 and Xbox series X, and Spyro 4 will hopefully come soon. But What if there was a crossover? Would it Work? Let's Talk About it!

Not sure if I'm in a minority with this, and I've mentioned it before on other platforms, but I honestly think a Sonic and Crash crossover would be pretty interesting, and I think they have plenty in common to work:
    * They're both platformers with a similar progression design (ie reach the end of a level)
    * Both involve an anthropomorphic animal lead pitted against a human mad scientist, the former accompanied with an intellectual sidekick/sibling figure (in Crash's case, a literal sibling)
    * Both series feature a diverse and wacky cast of side characters, which that alone would contain a treasure trove of amusing possibilities in terms of character interactions
    * Both explore exotic and colorful worlds and regularly deal with the mishaps of both technology and magic
Just give it a competent writer (coughSonicIDWwriterscough) and you'd have a pretty entertaining crossover
(also I said this on Twitter, but I'm still praying for you and your wife. Keep staying strong, dude)

    • @kacperkowalski8151
      @kacperkowalski8151 3 года назад +1

Yeah, but Crash is more about difficult and challenging platforming that is supposed to be taken with caution, even slowly, unless it's forced by time trial/falling platforms/riding some sort of animal, while Sonic works the best with enough momentum/speed. It might not work for similar reason why Spyro - Crash crossover wouldn't be a good idea. Also it's easier to make something with genres from the same developer

  • @NiGHTcapD
    @NiGHTcapD 3 года назад +7

I think your idea of keeping the levels largely separate seems like a good baseline...so let me add my thoughts.
If you don't somehow merge elements from both series, you're doing a disservice to the crossover aspect. I propose the following: Spyro's treasure can be found throughout either style of level, sometimes mixed with the Wumpa fruit in Crash levels. Collecting it saves, even if you die, and Aku Aku (if he's at one mask or two) can pick them up like Sparx if you get close but don't make contact, or even attract them if invincible. These can be used for buying powerups or progression...but better yet, they'd best be used to purchase bonus stages.
Boxes can be found throughout Crash stages, sometimes mixed with treasure chests/jars/other treasure containers, sometimes in puzzling layouts (Crash can't flame fireworks baskets, but if he can get that TNT to explode on it...), but can also be found a little more sparingly in Spyro stages. Spyro can get box gems by destroying all boxes before leaving the stage, as a sidequest of sorts, but he does have to find a checkpoint so dying doesn't lose them. He can also find Gems hidden in some levels. Gems are sparingly used as progression gates, or to unlock bonus levels.
Vehicles and gimmicks known to either franchise may appear in either style of level, tuned to that style. Spyro on a jetski, Crash on a skateboard, Spyro finding a skull platform, Crash with a fairy kiss...these become more prominent in bonus levels, but the main draw of bonus levels?
    Swapped styles.
Spyro has the chance to play linear, with Crash-like sensibilities tuned to his own capabilities; Crash gets to explore a relatively expansive level for more than just a hubworld.
This is the essence of a platforming crossover to me. If the two gameplay styles don't mix at the same time, if they're best kept separate at any one moment, mix elements from both to occur at the same time in either style, and ensure that they're properly entwined. Crash and Spyro are elements that, with the proper care, can be swapped between the styles of open-world collectathon and linear level-clearing. Even if you can't play as both Crash and Spyro in the same level for most levels, this preserves the feeling that in a way, at any given moment, you're playing both games at the same time.

Perhaps we should have each style, but each one's levels have the items that unlock the _other_ style's levels. So we still have some choice in progression, but not only are both needed to beat the game, but there's an _in-universe reason_ for it.
Another idea that may work together with or separately from the above: have the Spyro levels aesthetically feel like Crash areas (only aesthetically mind you), and vice versa. Spyro is collecting Wumpa that's just lying around instead of his usual Gems, Crash is finding tiny Gems in boxes instead of his usual Wumpa, you get the idea. The overall goal is to take each one's world and twist it until only the _other_ one is suited to traverse it.

I think a crossover could work if it used a tagteam system. That way you could use both anatomies of level design and still have the best of both worlds. That way both heroes could possibly be on the screen together more often. But that's just off the top the head. Never really thought that hard about it.

  • @ThePsychicClarinetist
    @ThePsychicClarinetist 3 года назад +1

As I was watching this, I thought of how a good crossover between the two could work:
Both Crash and Spyro (as well as Aku Aku and Sparx) have to team up to defeat either a common enemy or some of their enemies teamed up (much like Crash Purple and Spyro Orange's plot, but hopefully better). I imagine Crash's levels would be his journey on the way to and from places, meanwhile Spyro would have more exploratory levels in the more important or more dense areas. I could see Crash's levels starting with Spyro and Sparx flying to one of the main locations of that world, while Crash (and Aku Aku) makes his way there on foot for the level. Vice versa, I imagine Spyro's levels would start with Crash meeting Spyro and Sparx, and Aku Aku giving Spyro information on the main collectibles needed from those levels, and Crash and Aku Aku go off to either do more research with Coco or keep moving forward since they're hindered by having to travel by foot, and then Spyro platforms through a more expansive and collectible-filled area.
This admittedly ignores the technology Crash typically uses to get from place to place via Coco or the villains of his series as well as Spyro's portals, but for plot convenience standpoint of having to work together in this style, I imagine it could be something along the lines of having Crash's friends kidnapped and/or unable to help, and the portals Spyro uses wouldn't be there because of a lack of dragons or fairies in the areas they're traveling through. I also initially didn't think about which levels being played when as I initially imagined it as being more linear, but I think giving the players the choice makes the most sense. I still think there should be a way to make a system where they rely on each other plot-wise, but gameplay-wise, they can stand on their own (AKA both be played at their own leisure and discretion of the player). Lastly, I imagine that for multi-player purposes, there should be levels made that can encompass aspects of both Crash and Spyro levels into one, which can also function as another experiment towards whatelse can be done successfully as a crossover for the two, and if it's a liked execution, make more games around that in the future?
To those who may stumble upon this comment, what do you think? And awesome video, CGE and LotD! 😁 Sorry for the late reply!

My idea is you would have this huge open world with levels in them (by levels i mean a mini open world, a hub world where you can collect and do mini-challenges to get xp) and there are missions. For these missions you need to get collectibles and level up, say like a character getting an attack from the other characters moveset (be aware they will get about 2 from the other characters moveset, because of another mechanic), unlocking moves, or a mix of both. When you finish all the missions in a single world a boss room opens up, and when the boss begins you are allowed to freely change between each character to defeat the boss. After you finished that, another world opens up and so on. Each world could be based on one of the characters levels, but it’s invaded by the other characters enemies, collectibles, platforms, etc. (I also forgot to mention, in the hub worlds you can change between characters as well)

    Here's what I would do:
I would make it a 2 player coop, it can be split screen, but is recommended to be for online play. A way to describe how they're from 2 different worlds, but colliding into the same world. Crash would be platforming like normal, and Spyro would start the level off to the side for the Crash side of gaming, and Spyro would have to activate certain things within the level to help Crash get through. While doing so, Crash can collect fruits while Spyro can collect gems and crystals. Anyone who plays as Crash would see the level as a regular Crash level, but Spyro's perspective is an over the shoulder camera angle that allows creative freedom. Maybe he goes off track and into the level Crash is doing to collect something Crash forgot. Boss fights would incorporate both Crash's spinning ability, and Spyro's flames. They could work off each other and cause Crash to deal fire damage with his spins. Then, on other worlds we could have it look similar to Crash Twinsanity. Where Spyro would be able to thrive and do some glide work, among other things and Crash is just platforming his way to collect things and even racing one another to get to the end. Of course, the exit would be blocked by something within the level they can use to enhance their ability to fight as one.

  • @brandoncain

Hmm... what I think could work is something like the additional characters in Crash 4. A similar linear progression structure as the Dimensional Map, with a blend between Spyro's open world exploration, and Crash's linear platforming. And like the Tawna/Dingodile/Cortex levels, something Spyro does in his part of the level affects Crash's part of the level, and vice versa, with neither actually realizing what's going on.
Also, the N.Tropys are the villains, having been dumped into Spyro's dimension by the Quantum Masks.

The thing about completion in the games, Crash is supposed to give more of a satisfying feeling for getting 100% because they withhold the good/true ending for the game until Crash collects all Crystals, gems, and sometimes time relics. Spyro on the other hand just give more fun by giving a special level or power-up for getting 100% with all the gems and Orbs or dragon eggs or whatever they're using for collecting in the games. Sometimes it'll have a bonus cutscene at the end after completion, but it's more about the bonus level and power-ups as opposed to the satisfying endings Crash gives us

I think the way how they can go about this is if they have both styles but you have to utilize both characters in both level formulas. However to make it more interesting, you can balance it out by using both characters in both layouts to gain access to areas to progress or collect certain items for progression/completion purposes.
Hell why not mix it up with co-op to make things more interesting that both increases the game difficulty and have a different experience with combining both character's abilities/skills (and maybe add co-op exclusive progression for the true ending)

You're idea of "stitching" half of a Spyro game with half of a Crash game sounds good to me.
After all, both franchises invoke bringing in characters with different playstyles (something you pointed out) and while I am not to sure about Crash, Spyro has tested out drastically different game-play genres even in the classic trilogy (skateboarding, flight levels, Agent 9...) so it wouldn't be out of place for him to suddenly jump to a Crash style level if you change the player character to Crash.
Though maybe, one thing that can be done to blend them a little bit is to bring in the side characters, and have there be some "optional" areas in both Spyro and Crash levels where to switch to a side character from one of the two franchises go through there own exclusive level section to get more things (again thinking of most character switches in Spyro 3 here), BUT the characters aren't limited to the franchise that level corresponds to, so you can have Sgt. Brd sections in BOTH Spyro and Crash levels and the same for Coco or any other Spyro or Crash character that is joining the party.

There will be a couple of open exploration worlds, each catering to the assets of spyro and crash, grabbing collectables that are required to unlock the bosses. There can also be hardcore crash levels that utilize Crash's agility and dexterity, and others that utilize Spyro's Speed and gliding, again acquiring collectables for the 2 Tor's.
Once they get to the boss, they can tag team and swap around to make the boss fun and engaging, and then they can deal with... I dunno... Cortex having stolen Ripto's wand or something, tearing down the dimensional lines between Crash and Spyro with Magic and Science?
I think that there is some legitimacy to making each other doing the others' style of platforming. As you said: People who like Spyro games like crash games, and vice versa, so getting both characters, doing things conventional and unconventional would probably be a strong mark.

I keep thinking about that mod with Crash riding Spyro. What if they took the Ratchet and Clank approach? Had them travel together through the levels like that (with Spyro's controls being the basis for movement rather than the riding sections in Crash). The levels could be open world like Spyro levels, but there would be certain sections where Crash would have to hop off and progress through more linear sections. The setup of the levels could resemble a mix between Spyro 2 levels and Crash 4 levels (aka - no mini-game portals like in Spyro 3). Maybe if Spyro was aged up a little, he might be too big to fit in certain areas, so he'd have to send Crash into a cave, or down a hole, or something like that. We could also see a fusion of abilities like you discussed with elemental breaths and the quantum masks--which could make a return in a universe crossover game! Imagine Crash riding a larger Spyro, and the pair of them combining their abilities! Shooooot, that would also have the potential to be a 2-player game! One person can control Crash, another could control Spyro!

I can actually imagine a Spyro and Crash crossover game to be something similar to Skylanders. That was essentially a crossover with Spyro and Crash characters, mixed with Nintendo at one point, so if they can find a way to combine the gameplay and level mechanics, that would be a great crossover game.

Maybe they could do a platforming game similar Sonic Adventure 2 did, 1 overarching story having 2 sides, Crash's side has his typical gameplay and non-playable Spyro and friends while Spyro's side has the same going for him with non-playable Crash and friends, completing both 100% would unlock a final story where they team up to take the main villain before going their separate ways.

  • @bcrossfire1219
    @bcrossfire1219 3 года назад +1

First, I'll suggest some original content to justify the crossover: Dragon Masks. This fits with both worlds' mythos; dragons for Spyro, masks for Crash. The lead villain could be a Dark Dragon Mask who serves as the main villain of the story, and perhaps as an adversary to Cortex and Ripto as well as Crash and Spyro. Then there would be four-to-six other Dragon masks who represent, say, elements (not unlike the Elementals of WoC). In a novel twist, Cortex and Ripto start out as rivals until they realize they can help each other, and form a villainous duo to contrast with their heroic nemeses who have already teamed up (this is in contrast to the stereotypical crossover where the villains team up first and try to pit their heroes against each other, like what happened in the Crash and Spyro GBA crossover). And since all four protagonists are opposed to the DDM, the two duos eventually form an uneasy alliance in turn, allowing for even more crazy hero-villain shenanigans a la Twinsanity.
Now, for gameplay: I disagree that you can't reconcile Crash and Spyro's gameplay. What you need is a separation of character and stage. See, Crash and Spyro have different gameplay styles, and their stages have different layouts, but that doesn't mean you can't mix and match the two to create something new and exciting. After all, the whole point of a crossover is to see how the franchises combine together. If all you're ever gonna do is play Crash in Crash-style stages or Spyro in Spyro-style stages, it won't feel like a crossover so much as a collection. But, what if you had two major types of level, and Crash and Spyro, as well as Cortex and Ripto, all had abilities that can work in either format?
The two major level types would of course be wide-open exploration-focused levels and linear challenge-focused levels. This is a contrast that works quite well for changing up the pace of a game. I would suggest that each level consists of a single, large, wide-open "hub" that leads to the linear obstacle courses. It'd be like if a given Spyro level served as the hub to a set of Crash levels. Then of course you have at least one Speedway-esque minigame level as well as a boss level. Naturally, there are lots of NPCs to interact with, including Tawna, Coco, Crunch, Pinstripe Potoroo, N. Brio, N. Gin, Tiny, Elora, Hunter, Bianca, Sheila, Sgt. Byrd, Bentley, Agent 9, Gnasty Gnorc, Crush, and Gulp. Yep, that's right, we'd have us some villainous NPCs too, Cortex and Ripto have their own circles of "friends" after all! The majority of NPC interactions take place in the wide-open levels. However, I do have a particular job in mind for a certain larcenous ursine...
Next, the gameplay. All four characters can walk, run, and jump. They all have at least one form of attack: Crash has spinning, Spyro has charging and flaming, Cortex can shoot stuff with his blaster, and Ripto can cast spells with his magic scepter. Crash and Spyro also have moves that allow them to slam down with great force, the Body Slam and Headbash respectively. Crash can double jump and gain greater distance using the Death Tornado Spin, Spyro can glide and hover, Cortex could use a jetpack or his hoverbike, and Ripto could use magic to summon a flying creature.
It would be satisfying to see these four characters team up in various ways throughout the story, as well. Crash, Cortex, and Ripto could ride on Spyro in a manner similar to how Crash rides Polar, Crash can get into a good ol' Rollerbrawl with Cortex or Ripto, and Cortex and Ripto can take turns piggybacking on each other's shoulders. Indeed, one of the crossover's defining mechanics could be this sort of DKC2-esque team up that allows one character to hitch a ride on another. Co-op is another option to consider, as part of the fun of these crossovers is seeing characters from different series working together.
Now, as for the collectibles. It's worth noting that Wumpa and Gems are not 100% analogous to each other; yes, they're the most common collectible in their respective games, but that's where the similarities end. Wumpa are collected to score 1-Ups (and in Crash 4, Crash!Gems) while Spyro!Gems are collected mainly to pay off a certain fat, greedy bear so he'll open a door or bridge and let us continue. Wumpa are a temporary collectible, meaning they return when you return to the level, while Spyro!Gems are permanent, meaning that once you grab one, it's gone for good until you start a new file. That means Wumpa and Spyro!Gems could both be included as collectibles with different roles in the game. Of course, you can't have a Crash game without Crash!Gems, so how to reconcile the two types of Gem?
Well, that's where Moneybags could possibly come in. What if Common Gems were found in each level, and if you collect them all, you get a Rare Gem as a reward? Of course, that begs the question of why Moneybags would give you a large, rare Gem in exchange for a bunch of smaller, common Gems, given that he's a greedy son of a bear who would just as soon hoard them all for himself. Another option is that Moneybags is the crossover's face for the Rare Gem reward. You know how the Crash PS1 games gave you a secret ending if you collected all the Crash!Gems? Or how Crash 4 allows you to buy new skins using the Gems you find? Well, what if Moneybags is a personification of that convention? You bring him the Rare Gems, he'll give you some sweet swag that he totally didn't pick up at the local second-hand store for cheap. Then when you buy all the skins from Moneybags, the heroes (and villains!) find an excuse to shake him down like they always do, getting you your Gems back.

I don't have much thoughts to make it work, but I think it could be fun with how the two chars could meet? Some how Sparks and Aku Aku get swapped. where Spyro has Aku Aku, and Crash has Sparks. The two have to defeat a new boss that caused the swap as that boss has also switched chars to other worlds. like Hunter or the other dragons into Crash's world, and Coco or Dingodile into Spyro's. Where you'd have to in some cases search to find them or you meet up with them along the path... That could be fun where they are trying to figure out how to fix it all, and eventually cross path's at the end as they beat the boss and get their friends back to their rightful homes. Then after the game is beat you can jump back and foward between Spyro or Crash's world as either of them to explore or get a new game play experience as Spyro in a few of Crash's levels. Or like one big hub world that inner locks the two together, and have 4 mini playable levels like a special bonus level playable for only Spyro or Crash. If you are Crash you can go talk to Spyro or the other way around.. or the Special hub world could have where you got in as Spyro and get Crash as you're back up, and you can inner swap them only at parts of the level? Same thing would go for if you were Crash and had Spyro tagged along with you.
Idk just my thoughts on how maybe the game could work together, it would be a fun concept for sure if they can pull it off!

Maybe a co op idea where crash and spyro use there differences too help each other and there can be maybe an open world style hub and levels with a bit of challenge and harder platforming sections that are both required to move on like a big rush of success in the end of each platforming section and smaller ones in the open world areas. They could be mushed to gether like coffee and donuts. Similar yet different put together and combined to make them both better.
Edit: Maybe they could throw in the skylanders games and use them as a link and it is another common denominator, they where both in the most recent skylanders game.

One way it could work would be levels inbetween Spyro and Twinsanity or open yet linear, gameplay wise, Spyro keeping his base moveset with Crash keeping his base moveset from 4 without the other Masks (it'll lessen they're value), only keep Coco, return Crash his Fruit Bazooka and Death Tornado (also give it the ability of Triple Spin to speed him up) from 3, give Coco the Crash Dash and Super Slide, and of course, tinker with the gems from 4 to be similar to Mario somewhat, where they're received for completing objectives inlevel or just found somewhere in the level itself, for example, break all the boxes in a level and receive the gem on the spot, three can be from Crash and the other three can be Spyro themed.

I think they should try something along the lines of what the Lego video games do. Give us a story mode which has some crash like levels and some Spyro like levels, and a huge open hub world where all the other characters from both series, would be playable and selectable from a character menu. Some of them would have unique abilities and most of them would be unlocked via story levels and exploring the huge open hub world.

I got a thought about this. What if they took a Super Mario Odyssey approach with the kingdom system. The game would be split into kingdoms. Within these expansive kingdoms would be a big open area to explore. There would be only a basic number of collectibles to aquire to get to the end of the game. However, also in these kingdoms could be areas with greater platforming difficulty to get all collectibles, perhaps then unlocking extra levels and a better ending.
Both styles of platforming could be satisfied this way.

Hmm... I don't know. Like you said, I feel like what you're describing sounds like 2 different games stitched together. I think the appeal of a Crash/Spyro crossover would be being able to play as Crash and Spyro in the same level.
I think it's possible to have levels which they can both traverse without having either one feel too out of their element. If it was a blend of linear and open-world. Crash can work in both, like in Twinsanity and a lot of Spyro levels do have some quite linear sections within the open-world levels.
They could do what a lot of PS2/PS3 era games do where, if you're playing single player, you can switch between which one you're controlling at will and the other would become an AI trying to follow you. And if you're playing multiplayer, you can have one play as Crash and the other as Spyro. Maybe having a split-screen or something.
While they would play similar, they would both be able to do things the other couldn't. Off the top of my head, Crash can jump a lot higher than Spyro, but obviously Spyro can glide to areas further away. Then, just add some enemies, maybe put the gems inside the crates and boom! You've got a game.

Your approach was to separate their gameplay, when you never suggested ideas where the two could put their abilities together to function as a single character, similar to how Crash Twinsanity had four characters, not three. Crash, Cortex, Crash and Cortex, and Nina.

I like your idea. I have a game in mind. Crash Bandicoot and Spyro:Legend of Skylands. It takes place after Skylanders academy(and is not cannon to the skylander games), which ends with Spyro going to the dragon realms to find his family. Spyro’s look was changed when he got there, and being the hero he is, he saved the dragon realms from Gnasty Gnorc. At which point we get the reignited trilogy. Later, after the upcoming Spyro 4, He meets a new Crash and Coco, when he invites them to race on his Spyro circuit. The game opens with Crash and Spyro (and cortex, who they rescue later) are racing, when a portal sucks them in. When they pop out, Eon tells them the ALL the Skylanders have been crystallized(like the dragons in Spyro 1). Along with this, without his spell book stolen by Kaos, he can’t sent them home. There are eight worlds, each with eight levels and a boss, to represent the elements of skylands. To get to the next world, a skylander of every element must be rescued from that world. However, the levels of the world can be played in any order, except the boss battle is last. The types on levels are as follows: Crash normal level, Spyro normal level, crash chase level, Spyro speedway(flight) level(crash rides Spyro), crash hog level(except the hog is Spyro), a flying race, a vehicle level(like the water jet, plane, and motercycle in crash), and a car race like in CTR, but with superchargers. Each level ends when a skylander is unfrozen. The boss battles also have a skylander, of the dark or light element. The hub world acts like the dimensional map in Crash 4. To 100% and unlock skins, you need to break every box(there are no chests) including the metal ones, and collet every gem(there is no wumpa fruit). The player has the ability to switch between crash and Spyro whenever, but most of the time, they can only move forward as one. This last one will probably not happen, but if you have any Skylanders, and they’ve been rescued, you can scan them in to unlock a remade skylander game level. These would get you to 200%. So you get 64 levels, and 9 boss battles. Plus when the game ends, cinder goes back with them, putting her in the next Spyro game. What do you think of that?

I think if a crossover happens it should follow more the spyroish open world design with some challenges of crash so that´s a good combination. Because, a crash game with a gameplay style more like spyro would fit more than a spyro game with the gameplay style of the crash. An example, crash twinsanity, it has a more open-world/level design and more a spyro colletaton vibe than the original trilogy and overral it´s well recieved by that.

A Crash and Spyro crossover would work just fine, not really that big of a stretch. There are a number of ways they could go about it, the most obvious being: linear levels for Crash, open levels for Spyro. You could shake it up further than that though and simply have a mix of linear and open levels where you control both characters in each one (linear level where you have to switch character at certain parts, and open levels with areas only each character can access). Or, linear and open levels for Crash with a lean towards linear, and linear and open levels for Spyro with a lean towards Spyro.
You could also have combination levels with Crash riding Spyro, that work similarly to the Polar levels but with the added ability to spray fire and sections where Spyro is flying instead of charging.
Perhaps the simplest approach though would be exactly what the GBA did (but, y’know, actually done well) - two separate games that make up one whole story. A full Crash game and a full Spyro game. The issue there would be convincing players to buy two separate games for the full experience.

I don't think both could work under the same game, their gameplay is just too different to be cohesive with each other. In my mind a crossover should be a series of games and not just a single title, like how they tried to handle it with the original crossover on the GBA.
Have 2 games, and release them a year or so apart from each other. Crash (Whatever you want to call it) and Spyro (Again, whatever you want to call it.) The Crash game will continue Crash's traditional gameplay formula, and the same with the Spyro game. The difference being the linear levels Crash tackles will be in Spyro's world, whilst Spyro will explore N-Sanity Island with his more open gameplay style.
This way you stick to what both series do at their core, whilst giving the respective worlds Crash and Spyro traverse a new perspective.

You just take everything "half way"... half open half linear, half A-B but half exploratory, and I think it will be easy to do considering their movesets e.g. imagine a linear-ish level with Crash but there's an area in the distance you can only reach with Spyro's glide so you have to return to the level later either with Spyro or meeting Spyro at that point (maybe linked to collectibles for progression too) and then glide the gap if not even carry Crash/Coco across.
I don't think having specific Spyro and Crash levels would be good though, there's no reason Spyro can't just take a linear path e.g. imagine him in rude awakening or n.sanity peak... I can imagine it pretty easily, but you could add alternative paths that may contain different
Also, with fairies and witch doctor magic around you could pull off anything such as Banjo Kazooie style granting of powers/transformations to characters, or fully have Crash learn from Spyro and vice versa with the wall running or spinning - maybe Spyro eating a wumpa fruit is like a huge energy drink boost allowing him to tailspin fast similar to crash's spin, or Maybe Crash simply teaching Spyro some kind of a belly flop, or maybe Crash touching a crystal dragon allows him to somehow charge in a more hardened fashion, or Crash collecting gems doing something for him too. Spyro with Aku and Crash with Sparx could also add interesting effects - but I'd be tempted to leave the quantum masks somewhat out of the equation :) The fairy kiss could give Crash the fiery tornado
Perhaps in the homeworld you eventually discover karts that allow for more exploration and that both characters can use. Maybe even there is 2-player co-op with any section or area that features both characters, e.g. imagine Spyro going up against N.Gin getting into trouble, then Sparx flies elsewhere to pull Crash out of another level to help defeat N.Gin
Crash battling Spyro bosses, Spyro battling Crash ones... both teamed together taking on super strong versions of some of the bosses, like Gnasty after eating wumpa or abusing mask powers, or Cortex with Spyro gem power...
There's no reason Spyro can't flame or charge (Locked) crates and collect wumpa by Sparx being granted power by Aku, and that Crash can't slide, spin or bellyflop chests and grab gems for Spyro
Funny aspects too, such as Crash engaging with a sheep and you end up riding said sheep, maybe around the homeworld, Spyro finding Crash's jetboard and he is hesitant to touch it due to being in the water but allows Spyro to cross water that normally kills him :) maybe Spyro is SLIGHTLY older and can now hover for longer with slightly bigger wings and somehow Crash can be granted hover through magic which allows him to flap his arms to make it over holes that he is really scared of falling down...(?) to play on traditional elements of both games
I reckon if you sat 40 people around a table, put all these ideas down and came up with good cutscenes following a decent story - you could easily pull this off and I'm sure people that read my input above will partly wish that elements of these ideas existed in a game :D

I feel a better try would be doing a game like Twinsanity, with NPCs like in Spyro, having hidden orbs for Skins and weapons unlocking. Some boxes would have wumpas, some gems. Wumpas get you lifes and gems charge your superpower (Bazooka/super-flame attack).

While Crash is a linear platformer, he does have one open world platformer from Twinsanity. Sure, it’s glitchy and had several cut contents, but it’s still an overall great game.
If it managed to work for Crash, I’m sure they could throw in some linear design for Spyro.
Or perhaps, you can pick a character to play, but only certain characters can reach specific spots. At least, please, no more Perfect Relics....

An interresting idea might be to have some stages where you play as crash in a spyro like environment and vise versa. Taking their movesets into the opposite gameplay.
To supplement this, a spyro hubworld where you need to find the levels could work well. To keep from overcrowding, pair the cast down to the most core characters on each side, at least in the playable roles.
Now the controversial bits. Between crash gems, crates, wumpas, spyro gems, and a unique themed collectable, it's too much. We need to drop at least 1 minor and 1 major collectable. Furthermore, gems are important in both franchises, and we need to harmonise that somehow.
Neither game is very big on plot, so we must keep that simple. Given all that, here is my proposal for a game.
We find Cortex stuck at the end of time, somehow assembling a gem locator to try power a machine that will let him get home. It leads him to a rift, and on the other side, he lands in Gem Mines, Avalar. From here, both heroes get a call to action, and after each playing a set of 3 stages in their own home region, in their own home style, both find themselves in a region in spyro's world, where cortex and his inventions have taken over. This will be the main theme of the set design, crash items and enemies have invaded the new magical region this game is set in. Stages still focus on delivering one type of experience, from either franchise, but the set design is blended and the two protagonists will end up playing stages following eachother's level design, as well as their own. For bosses, cortex has conscripted cortex experimented animals that all consist of species spyro would normally flame to gain health.
Stages contain crates like a crash game, but rather than wumpas, they contain gems like vases and containers in the spyro universe. Crash style levels being easier to design, there will be more of them than spyro levels, but the main collectable for this game is split pretty evenly between crash style and spyro style stages, with spyro stages hiding more collectables each. The main collectable are the trapped residents of this new realm. Crucially, we establish they are not dragons, but actually rhynocs, tying this game to spyro 3.

They already did have crossover games. Back during the GBA era. So this is nothing new if they added another crossover. The games I speak of are Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy. And I wouldn't mind them having a crossover again if that turns out to be the case but first, I would rather we get a Spyro 4 and THEN do a crossover console game. Since Crash got to have a 4th game installment that was new after his first 3 games were remade.

Having a Spyro/Crash crossover in a genre other than a platformer sounds like it might work the best. Something like the way they did Mario + Rabbids. Maybe an RPG-lite platformer in the vein of Paper Mario? Whatever happens, I think one of the most important things to consider is that the gameplay should be unified and cohesive so that it brings a new experience altogether.
