  • Alma (Vicky Krieps) becomes tired of sitting around the house with Reynolds (Daniel Day-Lewis) and decides to go dancing on New Year's Eve, much to Reynold's chagrin.
Set in the glamour of the 1950's post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of the British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock's life until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by the scariest curse of all…love. And so begins a Gothic Romance of twists, turns and power struggles of "pure, delicious pleasure"* that is "devilishly funny and luxuriantly sensuous."**

Great scene, but… Could you explain what exactly turns Alma from having the time of her life at the party to suddenly becoming almost fearful? Is it that Big Dog? Other folks kept on partying, so it wasn’t a mass panic. And I see no evidence that she saw Reynolds up in the balcony, so why the sudden change in her mood?

How did Vicky Krieps not (at least!) get an Oscar nomination? Goes toe-to-toe with Daniel Day-Lewis for 2+ hours...And nothing? Ridiculous. I know the Academy Awards are largely a popularity contest, but she's phenomenal in this film.

I watched this for the first time last night. There will be blood has been one of my favorite movies for a long time, but I have just recently started to dive into the rest of his films. I have seen Boogie Nights, The Master and Magnolia as well. Up to this point in the film I was enjoying it, but probably would have placed 4th or perhaps even 5th on the list. This scene changed all of the that. I cried my eyes out both at the shot where he is standing alone looking out on the party with the couple kissing right next to him, as well as the part where it looks like he almost asks Alma to dance, but then holds back and they walk out. Absolutely incredible scene. Still gotta put There Will Be Blood first but I think this scene moved this movie into second for me.

If they screen an indie film in most mexican theaters they would screen it once or twice a week, mostly mondays at 10pm to give more space to more popular stuff.
