I did a low buy period across 2019/2020 after being inspired by your videos. I went onto read an amazing book called the No Buy Year and just knew I had to do it. I bought my first house on my own last year so I can attest to it working! It was fantastic to get clearer about my spending habits. For me, I felt I ‘deserved’ to spend on myself but it was out of hand. Good luck to anyone trying a low spend period…I’m keen to combat my food shopping bills so will be eating what’s in my fridge/freezer before buying anymore food x

Well done!! It’s so helpful to recognise those triggers. Sometimes I catch myself when I’m feeling happy I’ll want to spend, it’s not always just the negative feelings so it’s interesting to learn that about ourselves xx

I don't have any accountability partner. People around me do not support me at all. They only criticize my financial moves (saving to pay off my mortgage early, budgeting, living on my barebones budget, be careful with my spendings etc). I feel so alone, that's why I love watching videos like this, frugalism community has become my accountability partner

I really hope I can do this, I don't need any more clothes or any more anything really! I tried last year but didn't do well. But I did sell a lot of clothes and replaced those cheaper things with (fewer) slightly more expensive/better quality. I decluttered and sold my hobby items too. I do like plants, which is my weakness, but I think I will take to propagating them to curb my shopping for new plants! I still have a way to go as I own too many things still. But I'm hoping it's taught me to be more honest about what I buy in the future, if not for me it's for my children as I don't want to pass on such bad spending habits - things don't make you happy, I've had so many reasons to try and fill gaps with things and still been unhappy once the shopping endorphins wear off! I recently returned a few things as I did slip up.. oddly, my slip ups usually occur just before my period(!) It's like all sense goes out the window!!

I love this! I am going to be doing a no buy year. I'm giving up alcohol for the year as well and that is definitely something that adds up quickly when I go out with friends. I am moving into my van home this year and I want the money I make to allow for new experiences and not invest in things. Love and blessings! Thank you for the video!

I’m attempting to do this…I just told my husband and friend about the accountability part and they burst out laughing and don’t think I can do ano buy year so I’ve just signed up to the Facebook group you recommended and waiting to be accepted. My no buy year is about getting together a good nest egg of savings this year and then next year I would love to figure out how to invest it for the future. Thanks for this video! I’ve just subscribed 😊

I seriously need a kick up the bum with my spending, I’ve just been so down since 2020
I am constantly “treating” myself. By the time the stuff has arrived in the post the endorphins have worn off and I don’t even appreciate the stuff. Thankfully I haven’t gotten into any debt but if I keep on this way I will never be able to buy the “big things”.

I tried in 2021, but the year sucked and I failed miserably (from March) I have put weight on so my impulse purchases related to clothing. I’m back on track weight wise and less emotional (due to world events) for shopping. Look forward to being finally more stable. Thanks for the happy smiling advice. Love Lesley England x

I am considering doing a no spend month every second month.
That way i can buy what the kids need, but we can do it as a family and if they want something we can jot it down and come back to it next month and reassess.
As for what they need, it will help stop me thinking they need this when they really don’t.

This is my first NBY that is by choice and not for debt repayment (cleared in 2015) - this is now as you say, to realign my spending, be more sustainable and be grateful for what I have. We also have some house improvements to do this year which we don't finance so will help pay for those too.

Hi Lara, I've just subscribed to you channel. I'm I the process of moving flat and have decluttered 30-40% of my wordrobe. Clothes I brought over the years but never worn. This also included bags, shoes, jewellery and makeup. I was also shocked with how much I brought during the pandemic due to boredom.
Watching your channel has inspired me to do a No Spend Year for 2022.
    Brave....but I will give it a go.

I’m going to start the year doing a no buy for maybe 6 months. Never done it before but I’m moving in the summer from Essex back to Glasgow (after nearly 20 years living in England). So I need to increase my savings, but I also need to start decluttering rather than adding to my belongings.

    Happy new year Lara !
I am aiming to do a no buy January and see how I get on. We don't have debt (we did and got out of it) but I think I buy stuff to fill a void or reward myself. I have come to realise it doesn't work. The stuff doesn't make me feel better. So I am reducing my hours at work and will not have the same income but had to balance this with my mental health which I feel is at an all time low right now. It's not my home life its my job which is affecting me. So hopefully I will change more then my bank balance on this journey.

A simple trick that has helped save my family a ton of money is using the library for everything from traditional books to video games. Our local library let's you do curbside pickup, so adding things to the basket gives you that endorphin rush you get from shopping. It's been a game changer for us!

I really want to do a no buy year, I've tried for the last two years and I've 'failed' I say I've failed because I end up Impulsey buying things for myself and the kids because I feel as though its unfair why am I doing this to myself but the truth is it will help us in the long run. I think I need to set myself rules so it's it's so strict like allow myself and the children a few things here and there like for summer ill allow myself to get two to three outfits that i can make do with the whole of summer and even for the children, I I k the idea has to be that I'm try to be super intentional. I have told myself tho that I'm not allowed no home decor and home products and eve followed that through the last 6 months thank fully. I did have an impulse in regards to the home and went crazy and spent almost £1000 and half the things I got I regretted instantly, gave alot away to charity, sme to my parents and some are in boxes/bags in my shed in the garden, uff I feel terrible just thinking about the waste of money I really hope this year I can make it

    • @LaraJoannaJarvis
      @LaraJoannaJarvis  2 года назад

Sorry you feel you’ve failed, but all of these are lessons to take forward so don’t punish yourself lovely. If you set yourself a challenge not to do it you may be more likely to push through the impulse. Just sitting on decisions over a week or 2 can really help!! Have a look at what you want your “rules” to look like and how they suit you and take each day at a time xx

I'm doing no buy on lip products. I keep splurging on them even when u can't afford to. I barely buy other things, but will add perfumes, and makeup altogether because once I try to stop buying lip products, I tend to spend on something else. I need to stay away from Sephora 😆 the main place I spend.

I never could have imagined it either but after one month I just wanted to carry it on! I think even a week or month is a great reset and helps you see what brings you joy! X

Oh BTW Lara Martin Lewis recommends that we use gift cards as soon as we can in case the company goes bust so it's best to use them up, if u want x
