I slept in my car when I was evacuated during the California wildfires last fall. I went to the dollar store, bought some black foam core poster boards. I easily cut them with a box cutter to fit inside my windows (I already had a regular front windshield shade). They stayed in place without tape and from the outside it just looked like my windows were tinted. If you need to connect more than one board, the dollar store has black duct tape too. I can’t tell you how easy and effective this was.

    • @JustAGalOnTheGo
      @JustAGalOnTheGo 3 года назад +8

@@carmadariacompaniona4181maybe a little, but mostly it made it impossible for people to see anything from outside. Since then I have seen some van-lifers use these as well because they’re cheap/easy. It made me feel comfortable tho, I knew no one was walking by and seeing me in there alone. You could prob trim an inch off the top, or make a crease to fold the poster board down a little so you could crack open the top of the window.

I actually have a tip for somebody that lives in the car with the dog, if you're going to sleep at the Walmart parking lot take your dog to the bathroom in a different place before you go to Walmart parking lot. Once you get to the place you're going to sleep don't get out of your car for nothing, that way people especially men won't know that you're by yourself in your car.

I was in Hollywood and slept at the Walmart on Hollywood Blvd. for 3 weeks, but I did get a hotel room a few times to take a shower. I felt completely safe. Dont know if people know this but a lot of cars are designed where if you pull your front seat up as far as it will go and take the head rest off the back of the front seat then let the back of the front seat down as far as it will go, usually it will connect evenly with the bottom of the back seat and be even enough to stretch out and making use of both front and back seat. Subaru is designed that way .

You have the best tips. In places that the cars might be watched I pick shift hours as if Im a worker. My favorite is a hospital when I had the flu I parked like I was working a double. Ive never had a problem I park part way in the area where workers park in bad weather I use the multi level parking lot level 1 or 2 because there are always cars there In snowstorms its the best because staff often cleans off the cars and the dtiveways are always taken care of. Just be prepared to be able to not turn on your car.

Richard: Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck gives the Great Depression version of an entire family living in their car. It was common at that time because many families lost their homesteads or their city rentals, etc. USA has been this poor and poorer within the living memory of its people born 1920 to 1940ish.
The reason so many grandparents refused to email grandkids when emailing was THE thing to do: the grandparents categorically refused to let the grandkids see that the grandparents were functionally illiterate in writing. So many children in the USA did not get through the 5th or 6th grade. They became unable to spell at a respectable level in life. I met one woman who only finished the 3rd grade.
One of the best strategies for today's college students is to live in a vehicle instead of borrowing for dorm rent.

I got kicked out of my dads house on monday night 5/23/22, im a 32 yr old man, i had to drive 20 miles to a diff city cause the one my dad lives in is not big enough to find a place to sleep. Right now I've been sleeping in a target parking lot, under trees. I have no window tints, & it sucks when you know ur car only has 10 miles or less in the fuel tank, i have to walk around the city to find recycle for gas money. I don't want to drive with out recycle money & run out of gas that will suck. Being stealthy is difficult for me during the daytime, at night is easier cause I hide in thr shadows, but daytime I sometimes walk for 3 hrs cause u don't want to be seen by ppl just sitting in your car for hrs. I'll tell you more tomorrow, cause i have a job interview so i can have some $$$ to move my car around before ppl notice a black guy sitting in a white car by itself for 3 days now. I try not to look homeless, cause if you do, ppl leer at you & think your a menace, theres a number of homeless ppl in the city that i choose to stay so im not the only one. Also sucks when you need to get a new phone cause i have to go where wifi is or i will be bored after my walks are done.

Rabbit: There are places like that. There are also communities that are relatively safe.
In Maryland, there is a State law from slavery days that anyone who has no place to sleep is allowed to sleep on government property.
This law is honored. People sleep in the libraries, on the buses, on the subway, in the parking lot of county services buildings. One of the universities (pre-Covid) would lock the main library at 11 p.m., and anyone with a student ID was allowed to sleep on a sofa overnight. I never heard whether they actually checked for student ID.
During most of the year, homeless people live in tents in the well forested parks. If you happened to be parked in the parking lot, consider it normal for a homeless man to walk out of the woods in the morning.
During hypothermia weather, community centers may have floor mats to sleep on in the gym. Those buildings have showers. The minimum requirements for an over night shelter are toilets, sinks with running water, and 3" thick floor mats. There might be nothing else or everything the public donates.

Two other areas you can usually park and sleep for the night w/o many people noticing is:
    1) Warehouse districts (auto repair, manufacturing, fabrication businesses, etc). There are often cars that are normally parked on the side streets in those areas at night (especially auto repair facilities). So vehicles being parked there don't draw attention as long as you're stealthy and quiet. Also, there arent any nosy neighbors peeking outside. These areas are also relatively quiet and remote at night. Also, make sure you select an area that is not in a ghetto type neighborhood but in a more upscale area.
    2) Hospital emergency room parking lots.

I have tinted windows so with this and the tint good luck seeeing what's in my car. If I purchase things I try not to call attention to the fact that I'm covering them. And of course be situational aware if your being followed, don't drive right to the next store or home.

If you get towed while sleeping and you wake up to someone trying to get in your vehicle, when they realize you're inside they will attempt to get you out. Don't get out, make them drop the car/van and drive off.

I agree that varying the parking spots as much as possible is a key to stealth. Even rest stops need to be alternated as much as possible. Of course, if you must park in a residential area, try to park in the border between two houses rather than directly in front, or better still across from a vacant lot or small store.
Your penchant for parking at Walmart and other stores is puzzling to me, maybe things are different on the West Coast. In the Northeast you'd be reported and thrown out real quick! Hospitals, garages, same thing. Police also enforce rest stops that are marked for only one-to-three hours.
I just don't understand your reluctance to park at rest stops. They are 100% safe, you are never harassed, they have toilets and food, if it snows heavily they plow the lot so that you don't get snowed in as on a residential street. They are usually set far away enough from the highway to quiet the noise, and at any rate the traffic at 3 a.m. is negligible.
I fundamentally disagree with your blocking up the windows and all the other things you do to draw attention to yourself. The cardinal rule is "Never draw attention to yourself."

@@KimberlyLetsGo Nobody will ever bother you at the rest stops on the interstates, and you can make a practice of alternating between two or three of them to make yourself even less conspicuous, If you're freezing in the middle of night you can even drive from one to the next one just to get some heat up.
Rest stops on highways are more iffy. Some are viable, others don't want you parked there more than an hour and the cops will throw you out.
Never wash up at a rest stop, you will get yourself banned if not arrested. But you can mop yourself down with Wet Wipes in a stall, just make sure to clean up after yourself.

    • @dcwander7092
      @dcwander7092 2 года назад

Gerald: The East Coast is not uniform in that way. Maybe the New England States are. Maryland, however, has a State law that survived from slavery days that if a person has nowhere else to sleep they are permitted to sleep on government property.
I met one job injured public school teachers who moved into her car and parked on county property under the gaze of the security guard. She said it was the only place she felt safe. She was given public housing within 2 months.
If people park all over the same city or in the county, expect police to do a safety check during hypothermia weather. They will take a picture and post it in the station because they do want to know who is in the community. But sleeping on government property is legal Statewide.

MGTOW: A channel aimed more towards retirees advises that the easiest State to manage those legal matters is South Dakota.
A major point is that MANY large computer systems are now programmed to flag street addresses of post offices. Some States won't mail licenses/tags to post office boxes.
Some States have tag/license agent businesses.
Some States have people without residential addresses get permission letters from homeless service agencies. It is a one sentence letter in letterhead authorizing the mailing address. Some soup kitchens have mail services.
The crucial point for anyone who has a retirement account: the Patriot Act requires brokerage account holders to have proof of residential address. A utility bill qualifies as proof, I am told. With that registered with the broker, the MAILING address there after can be a post office box.
What can happen is that the account can get frozen, and the owner given no access to it and given the ultimatum to either close the account or prove a residential address.
If a person is retiring and taking up a life of travel, they had better meet the stock broker's requirements before going into the road, when it is easier to prove compliance with the Patriot Act.
Frequently mutual funds don't need to mail anything, but owning individual stocks will result in stockholder info being sent.
Not complying with the Patriot Act can entirely mess up a retirement income unless a person learns the EXACT rules.

The problem with window tinting (at least in the USA) is that the laws change from state to state. Even if you tint your windows according to the laws that your vehicle is registered in you can get ticketed for having windows tinted too dark in another state according to their laws. For this reason I always just do window covers/curtains, it's not worth the risk.

I'm making window covers with reflectives, in my mind it made more sense to try and get the side that is viable from outside to be black, rather than reflective. I plan to cover both sides with black fabric and make a little fabric handle on one side so I can quickly pop them suckas out just in case.
But can people let me know if my logic is not 100% in my theory here - if you're parking somewhere and someone like a security guard flashes their light at your car, wouldn't the flashy silver reflective in the windows by itself be a clear indicator that there's probably someone in that car?
