    Francois Pienaar wasn't even the best South African flank in his days, let alone the best number 6 of all time. He was in the team due to his great leadership, not because of his abilities. Similar to John Smit keeping Bismarck du Plessis out the side. Players shouldn't be picked into this side due to nostalgic reasons, but how good they actually were. I would personally replace a few of them, however you got some spot on. I am South African by the way.

    • @Karma-qt4ji
      @Karma-qt4ji 5 лет назад +18

      Bismark kept Bismark out of the side, because Bismark might have been a better player but he wasn't a better hooker. (If this confuses you, just imagine Heinrich Brussow on the wing - great in general play but falling short of his 'wing' duties). He also was renowned for being a self centred egotistical player and both PdV and HM had trouble with him. How many tantrums did he throw when he was substituted, refusing to leave the field or standing next to the touchline in line with the play? When we lost to Japan, his (among others) failure to follow the game plan, preferring to take matters into his / their own hands was given as part of the reason.
      South Africans love him because of his abrasive aggressive nature but truth be told, him and his brother cost us far more than they gave us. Sad but true.

    • @Anonymous-rw9ie
      @Anonymous-rw9ie 5 лет назад +5

      @@Karma-qt4ji But then we are having a smilier situation at Hooker now then? Marx might be a great player but can't even throw a ball in straight which inevitably costs his teams big matches. However, the Bismarck comment was only to give an example of how better players might be sidelined due to the fact that the captain, who is an incredible leader, just happens to be taking their place. Which, going back to the video, is why I am fully against Pienaar being included.

    • @Karma-qt4ji
      @Karma-qt4ji 5 лет назад +2

      @@Anonymous-rw9ie I agree with you on Pienaar. Re Bismark, I don't even rate him as the best hooker SA ever had, let alone the world. Think Uli Schmidt, John Smit (2003-2007 specifically but not exclusively), Chris Rossouw (the unheard of Transvaal replacement who ended up finishing the 1995 RWC when Dalton was dropped), Lucas von Biljon and Malcolm Marx, just to name a few. Marx is a little off at the moment, but he is a class player who leaves everything on the field for his team mates, not himself. That's the difference. To excel in a team, you need to see yourself as a part of that team and Bismark never did.

    • @Anonymous-rw9ie
      @Anonymous-rw9ie 5 лет назад +2

      @@Karma-qt4ji Yea Bismarck probably isn't our best ever hooker, however, post 2007 World Cup, the number 2 jersey should have been his regarding ability, however having John Smit's leadership on the field was a big need which is why it was good that Smit did start instead. Especially during 2009's big year.

      I thought Pienaar was the weakest choice. But these teams always are a bit of a lottery. I thought all but one player having played in the professional era was a bigger weakness. But every player here is a true great (of recent years).

    Reasonable list, especially that lethal Sella-BOD midfield. I do have a few queries/suggestions:
    Not sure about Pienaar at flanker. Fine player and excellent captain, but not even the best SA flanker, never mind being in the best ever XV. I'd plump for Richard Hill (Eng) here.
    For the #9 jersey, it is Joost all the way for me. Gareth was sensational, but JvdW was to scrumhalfs what Jonah was to wingers.
    Hard to argue with a Johnson-Eales engine room, but got to have looked hard at Big Vic before discarding him. I think Matfield had the edge on Johnson, so I'd have him with Eales, and Jonno on the bench.
    Now we come to my biggest concern: Campese?! Seriously?!! The two wing berths are Jonah Lomu and Brian Habana. Campese doesn't even make the top five wingers (think Doug Howlett, Shane Williams, Rory Underwood, Ieuan Evans, etc.)
    Here's my all-time team:
    1. Os du Randt
    2. Sean Fitzpatrick
    3. Jason Leonard
    4. Victor Matfield
    5. John Eales
    6. Richard Hill
    7. Richie McCaw
    8. Zinzan Brook
    9. Joost van der Westhuizen
    10. Dan Carter
    11. Jonah Lomu
    12. Philippe Sella
    13. Brian O'Driscoll
    14. Bryan Habana
    15. Serge Blanco
    Bench:
    16. Richard Loe
    17. John Smit
    18. Martin Johnson
    19. Michael Jones
    20. Sergio Parisse
    21. Gareth Edwards _OR_ Agustin Pichot
    22. Owen Farrell (covers 10 or centres)
    23. Christian Cullen (covers FB or wings)

      I like it. BUT.... You have not even considered Johnny Wilkinson? Best kick both out of hand and in terms of points. Forwards could not use his channel to build field position coz he would stop them flat, very smart and run systems really well, a Tom Brady type player. But lakes killer speed (not slow though) and the x-factor creatively. But if you needed a match won and a team system working at 98% for 99% of the time you Go for Johnny.

    • @interestedbystander196
      @interestedbystander196 3 года назад +1

      @@madebymonkeys5641 Hi Monkeys. I certainly did consider Wilko, but had to leave him out for two reasons.
      First, he doesn't get the 10 jersey ahead of Dan Carter.
      The second reason has to do with my setup. I have elected to go with only two backline players and six forwards on the bench.
      Therefore, I needed a strong option to cover both flyhalf and centre, and Jonny only gives me half of that. Had to put Farrell on the bench to cover these two positions (making him the only current player to make my team).
      If I went with three backs on the bench, I'd lose Michael Jones (heresy, I know!), and have Wilkinson to sub for flyhalf, with Danie Gerber taking the centre spot on the bench.
      If I wanted a viable alternative to Cullen for covering the back three, then Jason Robinson has to be worth considering.
      You may have seen I picked Augustin Pichot as an alternative sub for scrumhalf. I initially wondered if he was that inherently that good, or if he just looked so good because he was behind that phenomenal Pumas pack. But then, I also remember he was almost always first name on the team sheet when they were picking Baasbaas sides in those days, so he had something about him...

    • @boerieroll
      @boerieroll 3 года назад +1

      Some interesting points but you can't have 2 number 5s at lock, Eales is in there because he had a good line out and kicked for goal, you don't need your lock to kick for goal, if your fly half does his job. I don't really rate Johnson, historians would probably go for Frik DuPreez although he would be a little undersized nowadays

    JPR Williams( covers FB, wing and played international back row)
    George Smith( only Richie keeps him out at openside)
    Sean Fitzpatrick( abrasive, nightmare to play against and brilliant captain)
    Brodie Retallick( he's a great while still playing, but not enough for starting 15 in this company)
    Adam Jones( awesome tight head, great scrummager, good round the park and underrated by many)
    Rodrigo Roncero( most destructive scrummager I've ever seen and another who's underrated because he wasn't from one of the big nations when playing )
    Gareth Edwards( I literally tossed a coin between him and Joost for the 9 starting jersey, and change my mind every 10 seconds)
    Have to mention Dan Carter as a great, but wouldn't be in my 15 because of Phil Bennett being just THE genius, and not on Bench as Mike Gibson covers 10 and centres. One other who I would love to select, but can't is David Duckham. Another amazing player who was never used properly by England, and would have walked into any international side and been considered a great.

    How about make a video of the best 15 from before year 2000 and one best 15 after the year 2000..coz to my knowledge there is a lot of players out there that are really good...like joost for 9..Cullen for 15.. John Kirwin and Habana..Rettalic..Tim Horan ,Nonu ..Jeremy Guscot..Wilkinson, Lawrence Dallalio and many More..this are the names that could be in it but your pick is still good too..so let's split the best into 2 great 15s

    Any 'greatest' selection is subjective. But the one player almost every list includes is Gareth Edwards. Just shows how good he was. Even the NZs rate him the best 9 ever.

      Why do you Welsh lot love pretending you have the best fallback? When you have the best blind side fkanker and captain with Sam Whaburton, two of the best wingers with George North and Shane Williams and the best lock to play the game with Alyn Wyn Jones. Stop promoting that old geezer who'd get flaterned and celebrate your more modern history.

      Jpr, Serge, joubert, byrne, kearney, halfpenny, hogg, latham, lewsey, Robinson, Muliaina. All much much better 15s. All Cullen had was wheels. Never enough in a tough game like RWC knock outs... i'd pick every one on my list ahead of him in a crunch game. Heck, I'd pick Liam Williams over him

    The odd one out, weirdly, seems to be Gareth Edwards because he comes from a generation before most of the other players in the list. The rest is almost like a All Time World Cup XV for the most part. I think there are strong cases for many, and I agree with a lot of it.
    However, while Pienaar was a strong captain, there were other loose-forwards that were stronger. Michael Jones rewrote how openside loose forwards could play in the late 80s and finished his career dominantly on the blindside too. Razzie Erasmus was a tremendously good loose forward for South Africa too, and Richard Hill was an influential part of the successful 2003 England team.
    In the midfield, Little and Bunce were a devastatingly skillful combination, while Tim Horan and Dannie Gerber were totally dominant in most of the matches they played at no12 and no13 respectively.

    My opinion is that Pienaar did not play that long to cement a place, Jerry Collins or Richard Hill was better, Phillips Sella was an outside center, Tim Horan was the best inside center, fullback there was Christian Cullen, Andre Joubert, Jason Robinson, Stuart Hogg and even Leigh Halfpenny
