With these "Greatest 15" list's there will never be any consensus and in all the lists I've seen there is always at least one player you can point at and say "Definitely not that guy" in my opinion. Not so with this one. I can see an argument for all in this list but that doesn't mean I can agree with all of it. No doubt Jason Robinson was one of the best but even with his health problems Jonah Lomo was better. I always thought the professional era began in 95 not 96 🤔
Let me explain the reasoning for my Lomo-Robinson opinion. As @widebest pointed out they are very different players. Lomo is your proverbial "bull in a china shop" player, once he got moving he smashed through pretty much anything that was in front of him. Robinson is a dancer weaving his way through said china shop without breaking any of the china. Robinson is without a doubt one of the best wingers to ever play the game and I would have him on the bench if this 15 was a 22, but he lacks one key characteristic of Jonah Lomo. Lomo is such an intimidating figure that his presence could and often did determine how the opposing team played. In my opinion the advantage gained from pre-deciding how your opponents will play on your terms cannot be understated. I have a vague recollection of a match the All Black's played (I think in the group stage of RWC1999) I can't remember who against but I do remember that Lomo going OFF at half time being devastating because the anit-Lomo tactics used left large enough gaps for his more Robinson like replacement to dance through and make a lot of breaks before the opposition could adapt. This is of course just my opinion in a silly thought experiment purely for fun 😁
@John Mitchell In the modern game 100% the dancers are king. In my dream team Williams and Habana are on the wings and probably still will be if I ever get around to updating it (must be close to a decade since I did one). With the "Greatest 15" thought experiment how great they are in their own time is more of a factor for me than how good they would be now but even with that, there is still a place for big strong wingers like George North and that massive dude I can never remember the name of that looks like your typical 90's prop.
Whats interesting about this process is that the back line is mostly beyond contention (possibly the no 12 is under debate) however the rest of them pick themselves. The forwards however are very contentious and my guess is that for every position other than McCaws (the GOAT) there are other choices.

@@User-uq1pj he is young but i think he'll be one of the greats. Was a tough call between habana and williams. You are probably right but I wanted to have a welshman
This is a good team, but I do disagree with some selections 😂 I’d go with 1. Sheridan (he kept Jenkins in the bench at Toulon) 2. DuPlessis 3. Hayman 4. Johnson (C) 5. Botha 6. Pocock 7. McCaw 8. Parisse 9. Gregan 10. Wilkinson 11. Lomu 12 nonu 13. BOD 14. Robinson 15. Montgomery Subs: 16. Leonard 17. Schmit 18. Jones 19. Dallaglio 20. Carter 21. Greenwood 22. Habana 23. Rokococo My pack clearly going for scrummaging power 😂
Only Reid and Carter are nailed on. All other positions are subject to opinion (or national bias lol). Missing from the clips are the real reason Nonu and Bod were so good, their defensive prowess
1. Os Du Randt 2. Keith Wood 3. Carl Hayman 4. Martin Johnson 5. John Eales 6. Pieter Steph Du Toit 7. Richie Mccaw 8. David Pocock 9. George Gregan 10. Dan Carter 11. Shane Williams 12. Ma’a Nonu 13. Brian O’driscoll 14. Adam Ashley Cooper 15. Christian Cullen 16. John Schmidt 17. Tony Woodcock 18. Owen Franks 19. Paul O’Connell 20. Thierry Dusathuoir 21. Joost Van Der Westhuizen 22. Andrew Mehrtens 23. Israel Folau (Although that’s controversial so I’d put Matt Burke)
Everyone seems upset Lomu is not in the team. Fantastic when running once he had the ball. Useless going backwards and weak in defence. Jeff Wilson was a better winger. Also think PoC was a stretch here. Dusautoir is fantastic, tricky picking between him or Hill. Love Cullen, transformed the 15 role.
Good Video, but this is always going to be one of those that is just going fire up the debate. For me, I have to go with the following 1. Os du Randt (To me, he is the best in that position period, maybe best ever 2. Rory Best 3. Carl Hayman 4. Martin Johnson (you need his mongrel in a pack), but its close with him and O Connel 5. Victor Matfield (this man was a artist in his position, and has a great brain for the game) 6. Juan Smith (for me, this guy was a titan of his time, and he doesn't get his credit he is due) 7. King Richie (and I am a bok fan) 8. Kieran Read 9. Fourie du Preez (Joost was more impactful with his snipes, but Fourie for me was better at distribution, and he made those around him look good) 10. Dan Carter (only other person I would even think about would be that man Larkham, and Ill always lament Honibal not having a full career, but its no contest) 11. Jonah L (I think this would be a no brainer if he was able to have a career with no hidden health issues) 12. Tim Horan (for me, this guy changed the game at 12, and how the game is played in that position, and he would be my pick as the best 12 of all time) 13. Conrad Smith (Picked him over BOD because he was great in teams stacked with stars in the black jersey. BOD sometimes was the only thing that fired in the team he played in) 14. Bryan Habana (his class alone would make up for the switch to 14, and I feel he was a complete package) 15. Christian Cullen Loved the vid though, thank you.
@@TheButtPlugChannel Good call - they're both highly tactically intelligent players with great engines. Hill edges it for me because he avoided getting sent off in a RWC semi-final that his team would otherwise have won. I am not even Welsh and that red card gutted me.
@@AdamPerkinsPhD I'm English myself pal. Agree with what you've said. I think judging a player on one mad moment would perhaps be a little harsh, although you are comparing 2 greats and so you have to find an edge somewhere. By my reckoning, Warburton shone in a fitter, more competitive era of rugby, in a less complete team than that of Hill's. I think I'd personally give the edge to Warburton.
1. Os du Randt/Christian Califano 2. Keith Wood 3. Carl Hayman! 4. Brodie Retallick 5. Victor Matfield 6. Schalk Burger/Jerome Kaino 7. Richie McCaw 8. Kieran Read. 9. Oh please Brian Habana is way better than the wings you selected. Glad you were smart enough to pick Matfield and Retallick. Could argue that Fourie Du Preez could’ve been your 9 but the ones you picked are definitely good enough to make any greatest of all time XV
@@User-uq1pj Anything can be argued when you have to bring it down to one player per position! But to me, prime Rokocoko is the best ever. Had it all, could create, finish, defend, worked hard at the breakdown when needed... Habana over Williams, again, that can obviously be argued. And yes, Fourie du Preez is next in line, it might actually be a tie between those three.

Dude I liked the backline, but the tight five?? Tendai Mtawarira, Os Du Randt, Dane Coles, Bismarck, Matfield, Bakkies Botha and thats just to name a few, I know that seems like SA bias, but cmon make a tight five outa those players and they’ll destroy yours anyday
@@aarononeil-smith6275 he was never showy but that England team were a serious machine with him controlling the breakdown. Matfield and O'Connell both amazing locks - seriously hard to call out the greatest players in that position so I can't disagree with your choice at all 👍
Martin Johnson was a phenomenal leader but matfield is the man missing I’d have him over Alun wyn any day Johnson doesn’t quite make the cut tbh wasn’t as good as any of the things as o Connell or matfield mate
solid team, really like the selection of fourie du preez. Second row is horribly competitive, any one of matfield, eales, retallick and brad thorn could have been picked
You got Cully right... But Reid and Nonu, not 100% there with you, but at least you recognise Lomu was over-rated. I am a Kiwi, but I like Larkham at 12, at no 8 Michael Jones, ahead of Reid. he didn't play there often but you cant go past his game changing ability.
He did say from 1996 to present, so whilst I agree Michael Jones was a great player, he was pretty much past it in 1996 (at age 31) and was really a 7 when playing his best rugby - he only went to 6 and 8 when he slowed down.
Apart from Keith Wood the tight 5 is just wrong. Os Du Rand was an absolute game changer... There is only one lock more overrated than O'Connel and that's Martin Johnson, who thankfully never made the list. Victor Matfield and Brodie Retallick would be my picks as locks. In 2 years time, Retallick will have been as influential as Matfield.

Du Pont? Are you mad🤣. Williams over Habana too, my word that’s shocking
@@User-uq1pj he is young but i think he'll be one of the greats. Was a tough call between habana and williams. You are probably right but I wanted to have a welshman
Duncan Weir is the only obvious omission
Lol
This is a good team, but I do disagree with some selections 😂 I’d go with 1. Sheridan (he kept Jenkins in the bench at Toulon) 2. DuPlessis 3. Hayman 4. Johnson (C) 5. Botha 6. Pocock 7. McCaw 8. Parisse 9. Gregan 10. Wilkinson 11. Lomu 12 nonu 13. BOD 14. Robinson 15. Montgomery
Subs: 16. Leonard 17. Schmit 18. Jones 19. Dallaglio 20. Carter 21. Greenwood 22. Habana 23. Rokococo
My pack clearly going for scrummaging power 😂
Only Reid and Carter are nailed on. All other positions are subject to opinion (or national bias lol). Missing from the clips are the real reason Nonu and Bod were so good, their defensive prowess
Great video but didn’t Kieth wood play for balina-kilaloo
Lomu and parisse but other than them I love the vid!!
1. Os Du Randt
2. Keith Wood
3. Carl Hayman

19. Paul O’Connell
20. Thierry Dusathuoir
21. Joost Van Der Westhuizen
22. Andrew Mehrtens
23. Israel Folau (Although that’s controversial so I’d put Matt Burke)
Conor Murray over Fourie Du Preez and Aaron Smith is utter madness. So too is selecting Kepu and Woodcock. Other than that it’s a very good side
@@User-uq1pj yeah I guess I never really rated Du Preez, I can see that I’m probably alone in saying that but it’s just my personal view
Now that's some XV
the 2015 all blacks squad is rugby's greatest 15
Martin Johnson at 4 and POC and 5 for me
both of them aren't good enoguh
We could argue about every position except one. Jonah is the only number 11 for a list like this
Everyone seems upset Lomu is not in the team. Fantastic when running once he had the ball. Useless going backwards and weak in defence. Jeff Wilson was a better winger. Also think PoC was a stretch here. Dusautoir is fantastic, tricky picking between him or Hill. Love Cullen, transformed the 15 role.
A very good list, I think loosehead prop and the second row are a bit contentious but apart from that a great list!
Good Video, but this is always going to be one of those that is just going fire up the debate.
For me, I have to go with the following
1. Os du Randt (To me, he is the best in that position period, maybe best ever
2. Rory Best
3. Carl Hayman
4. Martin Johnson (you need his mongrel in a pack), but its close with him and O Connel
5. Victor Matfield (this man was a artist in his position, and has a great brain for the game)
6. Juan Smith (for me, this guy was a titan of his time, and he doesn't get his credit he is due)
7. King Richie (and I am a bok fan)
8. Kieran Read
9. Fourie du Preez (Joost was more impactful with his snipes, but Fourie for me was better at distribution, and he made those around him look good)
10. Dan Carter (only other person I would even think about would be that man Larkham, and Ill always lament Honibal not having a full career, but its no contest)
11. Jonah L (I think this would be a no brainer if he was able to have a career with no hidden health issues)
12. Tim Horan (for me, this guy changed the game at 12, and how the game is played in that position, and he would be my pick as the best 12 of all time)
13. Conrad Smith (Picked him over BOD because he was great in teams stacked with stars in the black jersey. BOD sometimes was the only thing that fired in the team he played in)
14. Bryan Habana (his class alone would make up for the switch to 14, and I feel he was a complete package)
15. Christian Cullen
Loved the vid though, thank you.
A Welshman not picking Shane Williams or Sam Warburton - very impressed at the restraint shown
I'd include Richard Hill as I reckon he is the best 6 of all time, not just the professional era.
Toss up between Hill and Warburton for me.
1. Os du Randt/Christian Califano
2. Keith Wood
3. Carl Hayman!
4. Brodie Retallick
5. Victor Matfield
6. Schalk Burger/Jerome Kaino
7. Richie McCaw
8. Kieran Read.
9. Joost van der Westhuizen/George Gregan
10. Dan Carter
11. Joe Rokocoko
12. Ma'a Nonu
13. Conrad Smith/Brian O'Driscoll
14. Shane Williams
15. Christian Cullen/Ben Smith
As a Pocock fanboy this one hurt to watch
1)Os du rant/beast. 2. Dan coles/ Bismarck 3.furlong. 4.bakkies/eben 5.retallic/mat field 6.dustoire/ du toit 7. Mc caw. 8.vermulan. 9.fourie de pre or yoost vdw. 10. Carter/Barrett. 11. Lomu. 12. Horan/sbw. 13. O Driscoll. 14. Habana. 15. Cullen
I know its early still but radradra is a machine at wing and I would probably go with ben Smith at 15
Have to have Cullen. Possibly the best attacking fullback. At least the earliest.
@@TheLordoftheGings ok , I never saw him so I dont know , but if you say so . I thought you meant Leo Cullen when I first saw this 😂😂
Here's my team to play against the Greatest XV - I don't think these guys would be considered first picks
1. Tony Woodcock
2. Steve Thompson
3. Tadhg Furlong
4. Brodie Rettalick
5. Victor Matfield
6. Abdelatif Benazzi
7. Olivier Magne
8. Lawrence Dallaglio
9. Joost Van der Westhuizen
10. Henry Honiball
11. Rupeni Caucaunibuca
12. Nemani Nadolo
13. Semi Radradra
14. Jason Robinson
15. Christian Cullen
The back 3 would certainly have hearts racing when unleashed.
Matfield for AWJ (and I’m Welsh) but can’t really argue with the rest
Martin Johnson? Captaining a northern RWC victory must count for something. Great vid tho.
Bakkies Bismarck and coles are nowhere near this team mate the others fair enough however u couldn’t fit the beast and du Randt in the same team
you talk alot of shit lol AWJ and O'connel in there prime over any of those second row, id even put martin johnson in front!
leaving out ben smith is a huge call
You can put a Kiwi in all the places and no one would complain
FINALLY A GREATS LIST WITH KEITH WOOD
Nice video
My team:
Jenkins
Coles
Hayman
Retalick
Matfield
Kaino
Mccaw
Parisse
Du preez
Carter
Horan
Bod
Caucau
Habana
Smith
@Henri Panapa
Halfbacks

Wings
Fullback
Though rupeni so good he can play wherever he wants
where is Wilkinson ??(i'm french)
People forget just how good gethen Jenkins was, and I'm English....
Os Du Randt at 1, Johnson at 4, Eales at 5, and Richard Hill at 6. Otherwise a pretty good list 👍
Jonny Baynham Matfield and O Connell locks for me. Totally agree with Du Randt and especially Hill though. Hill doesn’t get necessary credit.
@@aarononeil-smith6275 he was never showy but that England team were a serious machine with him controlling the breakdown.
Matfield and O'Connell both amazing locks - seriously hard to call out the greatest players in that position so I can't disagree with your choice at all 👍
You picked Paul O Connel and Alun Wyn Jones over Martin Johnson. Have you actually ever watched rugby?
Martin Johnson was a phenomenal leader but matfield is the man missing I’d have him over Alun wyn any day Johnson doesn’t quite make the cut tbh wasn’t as good as any of the things as o Connell or matfield mate
Think matfield and retallick are my shouts for the second row but great team overall
Martin Johnson?
Brady capt behind mccaw, but player?
Christian Cullen is the best fullback of all time/eras.
That’s interesting, I’d have to throw in Josh lewsey, Israel Dagg, Percy Montgomery and Willie Le Roux into that mix as well
I feel like Victor Mattfield and maybe Brodie Retallick missed out on a spot, but good list
Big shout out for Pocock but understandable he misses out to McCaw. And Kaino.
Wow... no Jonah,Fitzpatrick, Os Durant,Eales,Johnston, Juste Vanderveshausen,Michael Niko Jones... Still a great list though...
solid team, really like the selection of fourie du preez. Second row is horribly competitive, any one of matfield, eales, retallick and brad thorn could have been picked
Solid list, only one you're really barmy for IMO is that melon with a body attached to it at loose head prop. Sheridan, Oz, Beast etc....c'mon....
Lomu???
Do a Brian Lima hit tribute
I would've chosen Bakkies Botha at number 4 and Victor Matfield at number 5.
Was Carl Hayman that good?
Are you welsh by any chance? Some shocking selections in this team😂
Jason Robinson was incredible.
I totally agree with everything ....but not 11 😂wat is a team of legends without Jonah lomu!?
if irland still had all there greats, they would be unstobable, same with all blacks
Same with France
The king of lineouts missing.
Johnny Wilkinson??
Wilkinson was an immense player, but I think DC beats him
Carter eclipses Wilkinson
It’s a tough one but Dan Carter is cemented as 10. Morne Steyn and Wilkinson would be right behind him though.
Second best but like the rest eclipsed by Dan the Man
U forgot the goat Jonah ?
It's your list and you can pick whoever and yadda yadda yadda but where on earth is Jonah Lomu? Defies all reason
for me the front row has to be the pontypool front row
drew mitchell a l'aile et botha en 2nde ligne et c'est parfait
peut etre wilkinson en 10
You got Cully right... But Reid and Nonu, not 100% there with you, but at least you recognise Lomu was over-rated. I am a Kiwi, but I like Larkham at 12, at no 8 Michael Jones, ahead of Reid. he didn't play there often but you cant go past his game changing ability.
He did say from 1996 to present, so whilst I agree Michael Jones was a great player, he was pretty much past it in 1996 (at age 31) and was really a 7 when playing his best rugby - he only went to 6 and 8 when he slowed down.
Danie Gerber is the best outside centre of all time/eras.
I only have a problem with #1, 6, 9 &14
6:12 Who did Carter bump off there? 😎
No one 😂 he side stepped
@@christiansimmons630 yeah no contact was made aye duh 😂
Lomu in for Habana and Van Der Westhuizen in for Du Preez, otherwise correct
Dont know what Kieran Reid is doing here
who would you rather have
@@marcusthomas2880 Delalio any day
Get the bread Andrew 😂😂😂🥖🥖
Apart from Keith Wood the tight 5 is just wrong.
Os Du Rand was an absolute game changer...
There is only one lock more overrated than O'Connel and that's Martin Johnson, who thankfully never made the list.
Victor Matfield and Brodie Retallick would be my picks as locks. In 2 years time, Retallick will have been as influential as Matfield.
The fact lomu isn’t in this squad is a joke😂
I feel like Parrise or pocock could’ve taken 8
