You shouldn't pin anything in particular for the button to appear. Just pick a close point to where you want to start calculating the distance.

you shouldn't click on actual places like shops or hotels, just randomly pick a coordinate, then you'll see measure distance

Touch and hold anywhere on the map that isn't a place's name or icon. A red pin appears. Select Measure distance
