First time I've heard Mack refer to his "partner" as "girlfriend". She should be leveling up to wife pretty soon.
Mack ought to be careful. His department may allow romance between officers, but he mustn't let it conflict with his duties.
I’m not sure if he’s got a loisense to marry a person of opposite sex just yet. It’s not 1656 anymore you bigot
They have a Total Hours Played minimum to unlock the next level.
but thats racist
@@RichardPhillips1066
He used to say that he doesn't like the word but now he uses it all the time lol.
Damnit, mack! I just passed 100 hours on Valheim that you convinced me to buy. I can't keep up!
It's taken about 16 hours of gameplay for me to accomplish what took 20 minutes in minecraft. It's amazing.
So true! After 160 hours of Valheim me and my friends are and now 40 hours deep into Vintage Story. Amazing experience, highly recommended!
More fool you. Valheims trash
More fool you, valheim is trash
The game is loosely based on the " Terra Firma Craft" mod for Minecraft but taken several levels up, I got it years ago and play it when I need a vacation from the stress of other games, almost like a Zen experience, like you said is very stable and the community is AWESOME! you will never get yelled at in there. Also one thing to notice, modding community is very active and when there is an update to the game chances are you will still be able to keep playing in your world since they will not break it. Good review I'm glad you gave the game a fair chance.
Cheers from Canada.
*Ackshually,* its inspired by TFC, devs created their own mod, got fed up with minecraft's clunky way of modding it, stopped developing the mod, recreated the entire game and its engine in i think C#, as a fork of the manic digger engine, according to them they re-wrote about 95% of manic digger's code, and since then we've been calling that and its unique content 'Vintage Story'
This looks like a game that I've always tried to make with Minecraft mods thank you for showing me this.
If this game has trains and mech stuff you see in some mods I will only ever play this game.
@@whiteymcflightey Like Immersive Railroading does? (This is the only mod for trains for Minecraft)
You should try sevtech mod. pretty grindy similar to this game. Start as pretty much cavemen up to going to space.
@@FrozenLegion I have but it was missing the exploration
It's very much Terra Firma Craft, but better.
Two years later, there's been massive updates to the game, some that improved the look of the game to give it more of its own identity, some to make certain things make more sense. Like you now need hinges to make a chest and tongs to pick up hot items. There's now a device for warding away rifts if you want to protect your base. There's a homo sapiens mode that takes out the rust world/sanity mechanics to focus purely on survival. There's now proper oceans. (Though they aren't terribly interesting yet.) There's also a bug net and a frankly ridiculous amount of butterflies to catch with it! The music player's now a wax cylinder instead of a record player and the merchants will chatter with you. There's now a raft and an oar in-game now.
Lots of little touches and big improvements, with more to come.
How come nobody talked about this game before???
It looks god damn amazing and fun.
Its actually pretty famous but there's not a lot of gameplays on youtube, if you look up TerraFirmaCraft you may find VintageStory
It looks god damn amazing and fun because it is god damn amazing and fun. The reason of why nobody talks about this game is because very few people are actually making videos of it
It's not on Steam so nobody's heard of it.
@@MizterMoonshine neither it Minecraft and that is popular
there arent too many videos about it as of this moment. seems to be picking up though
On the wiki there is a couple first day guides. Also, in the handbook (key is H) there is a bunch of guides like "Survival Starter Guide." Your handbook is the key to everything. With clay making (the copper pot), you can press F and select duplicate layer, speeds it WAY up. Also you can find copper chunks on the surface if you look around on the ground. Cellars also don't need to be underground, just made of dirt or stone and are maximum 7x7x7 in dimension.
YES love that your covering this, the dev team is husband and wife and really great at feedback. I've been watching this project for a while now and hope it takes off
I thought Tyron worked with his sister?
Minecraft 2. Seems right up my alley.
Thank you Mack. Just wanna say, you do an awesome Job.
There's already a mod doing all this game does for Minecraft: Sevtech ages
@@annilator3000 and hytale, which isn't even out yet.
@@annilator3000 and rlcraft
@@annilator3000 If you're gonna be like that, at least mention the actual mod this is based on. Sevtech is bad anyways, just play Terrafirmacraft.
This isn't Minecraft 2. This is a variant of it. Neither is superior to the other. Some people like the extra complexity, realism, and grittiness that VS provides and some people like the more simplistic, fantastical, and creative approach that MC provides.
Also, yeah, this game definitely (seems to) run better, but the only reason MC runs kinda bad is because of all the damn highly unoptimized legacy code that was built into its core long ago. Hopefully, this upcoming cave update will fix that. Also, I have questions of how much a VS server can take as compared to an MC server.
this could be amazing with a dedicated large group of people to form a real online tribe where everyone fills a role
This is hands down my favourite game to play. Thank you Mack for getting me into it.
The Vintage Story world looks beautiful. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, it's quickly becoming one of my favourite games. A nice surprise, I thought I was over voxel-type games, but apparently not :)
Mack admitting that he was forced to reduce himself to gamer journalist difficulty tells me this game has a lot going for it.
Mack is getting old. Almost 50.
Nah, Mack is well known as being only good at Medal of Honor, Hearthstone and WOW lol.
Looks good but my life style won’t allow me to get that deep in to the game.
Love the concept, don't have the time. I'll stick with Valheim.
Coomer detected : p
theres a mod (getting mods is ez, and supported by the developer) that makes the game less grindy. plus world customization settings to make ore and such more common.
@@gabb6552 whats the name of that mod?
Pretty sure, this game is based on a Minecraft mod called Terrafirmacraft. Just in case somebody is interested.
Yep. Guess he’s never play modded Minecraft.
Some of the Vintage Story development team, formerly worked on their own Minecraft mod (a butterflies mod, not Terrafirmacraft!!!) They were frustrated with the limitations of Minecraft and its lack of true support for mods, and created their own game engine instead.
@@timtorreto3674 Ah, good to know :)
@@timtorreto3674 What do you mean? What limitations? With the Minecraft engine? Don’t get me wrong: if this is better than TFC then good, but TFC was more tedious than fun. Does vintage story eliminate the tediousness?
@@keithmccormack6248 I never spent that long playing TFC as some elements seemed like pointless make-work. As for Vintage Story, having played it for a few hours now, I'd say it can sometimes be challenging but it makes up for it with charm. Like, there are things which take time to do, but all of them so far have been enjoyable. Making clay items is a good example. It takes time but there's a nice little phut-splat sound as you add one more voxel to the model, and I figured out the F key to change the amount of clay added - makes it into a mini-game, how efficiently can you do it. And like Mack said, because it's challenging, it feels good to achieve something. I guess overall I just find Vintage Story very soothing and enjoyable. I love the way it looks and how everything has the same art style, and there's a lot of small details in the gameplay which are awesome.
This is the Minecraft we deserve and needed
A few years back, a coworker at my manufacturing job built the entire work area and machinery in minecraft. It took him many weeks. He showed us pics, and oh he was so proud of his work. Word got up to human resources that he'd done this and they called him up to "chat". Turns out they just assumed he'd done this so he could "train" himself to one day come to work armed and shoot the whole place up.....true story.
I saw this advertised on Humble Bundle and wasn't aware of the forge mechanics, I also saw there was some energy and automation elements! Very exciting, glad you had a chance to cover this.
It a bit of grind to get to wind power but its totally worth it.
Ey I've been playing this game for awhile now, it's really quite a lot of fun once you get into it. It's actually kinda my comfort game due to the atmosphere, idk I just like how it all looks and feels.
Hit the nail on the head.
What sets vintage story apart from most minecraft clones is the progression from start to finish.
In minecraft, you smash trees down with the back of your hand.
In vintage story, you chip rocks together, put them on the end of a stick, then start felling trees to get firewood, which is needed to actually start making what you need to get proper tools and to keep yourself properly fed.
Neither ends up being a worse option, but one ends up lasting longer in terms of how much time you can sink into it before you get tired of the base game mechanics.
Glad to see you finally got around to this one Mack, I was anticipating it after Valheim! :)
Between this game and Valheim, we are set with immersive crafting survival.
@@whiteymcflightey Agreed! After watching this video a couple of days ago, I have this urge to go back to Vintage Story and play it again. I'm trying to stick to one game at a time though, and I've just (literally) crafted my iron armor set in Valheim... I'm really enjoying it so far. 👍
Thank you so much for this! This game is right up my alley. Would have never found it without this channel. None of my other sources for gaming news cover it. What a hidden gem!
Thank you so much for showing us this game! It is just great. It would be a great game even for triple the price. Right now it's just a steal, and: you are paying the devs directly for their work. Also has absolutely great and easy to install mods! Filesize is even smaller than Valheim, mods are like 500kb or maybe 3mb, and it runs much better than Valheim. It is much deeper than Valheim and unlike in Valheim (which everybody called a difficult game) here you will actually die against a ram in the first couple of hours of the game.
insta bought it after watching this video,
I hope the game devs of all these games pay you something, as you sure as hell make them a lot of money.
at last, cdda has found its 3d engine
Mack: “this is everything Minecraft should have been”
Game: doesn’t exist without Minecraft.
This used to be a minecraft mod with a different name. I remember having to build supports for tunnel mines or they would collapse. Was great fun.
Wait is this made by the same guys who made Terrafirmacraft?
@marsey appreciator You are right, Tyron made his own total conversion mod back in version 1.8, but he never worked on TFC. He was however involved for a short time in the development of Hytale, before he made his own game.
You had me at pickaxe mould
Minecraft with extra steps.
For those confused when Mack is saying "Cooooooooooooo-ooook" he means to say "Cook"...
This game may take more work than my real life😇
If you like this kind of deepness you'd like Cataclysm DDA
I've been looking for a game like this forever.
mack, i think its HIGH time you revisit this!
I love this game! I got so addicted that I had to quit cold turkey for a couple weeks to get back on schedule with work. I can't wait to start playing it again! The developers update often, by the way, so I'm timing my next play (binge) period with that next update. Thanks for reviewing it, Mack!
The game has guides in the Handbook. It tells you that when you start your first game.
Look like a game I would give up on after 15 minutes because of the lack of guides and it looks confusing. But I am going to try it now, looks liek a game that require patience.
Theres an inbuilt guide already, just have to press H. And the discord community is VERY helpful when questions are asked for help.
Look...if you're looking for something simple, heavily modded making your PC run like crap, minecraft is the game for you. Even unmodded, it's simple and easy play.
But if you're looking for a more adult, more complex game that runs smooth on just about any PC, even with mods, then this is the game to go to. It's not better than minecraft, except for how it treats the PC, both are fun, for some, like me, who want more complexity with more adult themed, this is def the game to go to. Like.. it really is it's own game with a lot of similarities to minecraft, which yes, was the inspiration.
4:35 Emergent gameplay is an amazing thing, i cant get enough of it!
ever since the Second Extinction fiasco I have not gotten a single notification from this channel and no WAB video's have appeared in my feed, Thanks youtube.
Once again, another great vid mack!
Looks very similar to a Minecraft survival mod I used to play, where you also had to nit out flint tools, bury lit wood to make charcoal, and pan sand to find nuggets. Even the shape of the foundry was important and you had to strike your newly smelt toolparts with your hammer at a forge at the right time at the right temperature. Sometimes if you where to slow you would have to reheat the part. Also the where seasons so you had to prepare, and in the following year, you had to plant different seeds on the cultivate ground because of different nutritions in the ground from previous harvest.. I wonder if some of the developers are part of this game aswell
It's great that you can make a cellar , it's also sad that this is innovative for survival games. Thank you Mack for showing me another time sink to add to the collection.
there i was thinking just another minecraft well need to check this out
Anyone who thinks Valheim is the best survival game ever or even a decent game has been totally discredited as a reviewer to take seriously but Mack is still entertaining and that's all I watch for... Entertainment.
This is the problem I have with survival games. They say they’re immersive, but they’re unintuitive.
If I were in the wilderness, I would be able to figure some things out based on the survival knowledge I have and some core concepts. Friction can make fire, any sharp rock can cut things, etc. but in this games you need to follow this strict, Byzantine, procedures that require you to stop playing the game and google it. That’s the absolute opposite of immersion.
I love survival crafting but this one sounds so in depth as to be boring. Might be fun if I didn't have a job, a kid, and a relationship to maintain.
Damn some right immersive crafting will keep an eye on it
Now.. I liked playing Minecraft just like the majority, it was fun and has it's charm. Saying that, it was limited back in the day (I've not played in years). However, this looks legit.. proper survival.
Although still in development ( with frequent updates about what is being worked on etc on discord ) Vintage story is already a great game with a talented modding community to boot. Passionate indie-game developers like the couple who are making VS ceases to impress!
I love how they featured your video on their media page.
I truly enjoy and trust your reviews. Thanks for all the hard work!
A new generation of engineers will be born!
Horrible game , my food gets cold , I forget to take pills , I burn things while I’m cooking , it sucks up your life , very very very immersive and addicting. Highly recommend.
Mack thanks for this amazing Jem .
You even have to craft your own TP and boy you are going to need a lot
Congrats on having your review linked on the site!
This game looks awesome, you are right, this is what Minecraft should have been!
I wish I had what you and your partner have, she joins you on these playthroughs and it is sweet as hell.
Great work, Mack
Oh cool i've been playing this game a lot, surprised you covered it
I dunno... I get that it looks really immersive but after the 50th tool degrades i can imagine immersion quickly becoming tedium if you have to go through 20 different steps just to make a new one.
i imagine u can repair it...or that would be hell
I'm still addicted to Valheim but I'll keep this one in mind for a later date.
Thanks Mack.
This crafting is the Kingdom Come: Deliverance of Minecraft.
Minecraft modpacks, anyone? They can be as hardcore and immersive as you like, and then some. Although, I have to admit, this game visually looks a lot better than vanilla Minecraft. Those Mojang slackers.
This looks and sounds exactly like Terrafirmacraft..which is a mod for Minecraft.
A ex dev of that mod actually is working on the game
Beautiful! Looks like my next itch for valheim.
minecraft was the same before, I had to print out a 20 page recipe guide just to play that game back in the day, and I was OK with that! :D
Thanks for the review Mack. This game is excellent and great detour from Minecraft or similar type games.
I was like 'this looks like a sick minecraft mod" until I heard you say its a standalone game.
I see WAB, I click like.
You’re used to those words in the title aren’t ya Mack 😉

i had a good laugh at 1:12 because terrafirmacraft's (the minecraft mod this was inspired from) slogan was "survival mode as it should have been"
this sounds badass
Man, this looks pretty.
This game has the most realistic Coal simulator I like it 👍🏽
You won't believe how good Loop Hero is.
I've been so interested in that game.
This is what I wanted Minecraft to be! Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have a win condition so I'll have to skip it, but still it looks impressive.
thanks for showing this one. really crazy
Iv been waiting for your review on this for 2 months
Looks like this s what you were after from Valheim with all the super deep immersion and individual arrow crafting
this is actually focus on survival side that minecraft never achieved . tho to be fair . after minecraft became massive . it became impossible to not make it other than general sandbox .
Thanks Mack, would not have known about this one. I loved Minecraft but reached a point where it just lost my interest, and this looks like it offers so much more

or even a modpack, Skyfactory is great for learning all the mods

I like the crafting system, voxels in a voxel.
Damn you. Previously I was curious and now I *need* to buy it.

Yeah this is Minecraft Terrafirma Craft, but if I want Terra Firma craft I'll play that mod.
As someone who played a lot of terrafirmacraft, trust me, this is worth it.

The mod the game is based off of is Terrafirmacraft. So honestly if you have minecraft java just install that XD.
This game looks like it subdivides the blocks to a lot smaller grid sizes. Maybe that mod you speak of does that with Minecraft too.
@@TerryMartinART the mod has basically the same crafting system. With some minor changes here and there. Honestly, what makes this game sound appealing is that it runs well. Whereas with minecraft its russian roulette on whether or not the game runs ok. Especially with mods.
