I've made this and it is very tasty. I did not have smoked pepper therefore used a long green chilli without the seed. The chili is called Hatch Green Chili from Hatch New Mexico. They are mild in taste compared to a jalapeño or Thai chili .

Putting in a whole carrot pricked with a knife or fork works very well to cut any sharpness, bitterness from tomato products, too. For smaller recipes like this- a third, half carrot or a few baby carrots. The carrots absorb the bitterness and releases it's sugar. I tasted a bit of a used carrot once- it tasted so strange!
