William S. Burroughs: "The Limits of Control" and Its Influence on Deleuze

We explore the origins of Deleuze's concept of the Control society by taking a deep dive into the priest of the Beat Generation: William S. Burroughs. Taking cues from texts such as The Limits of Control, Nova Express, Naked Lunch, and his lectures on viral communication, we articulate the fundamental tension at the heart of control systems, how images can 'go viral' in the age of social media, and explore Burroughs' own accounts of communication and cut-up writing techniques in pursuit of an understanding of how to short-circuit these apparatuses today.

Isn't the problem with using their own strategies that you are still operating within that ideology. Playing the game by the rules of the enemy. Kind of like Zizek's critique when he quotes Herman Melville's Bartleby the Scrivener as an alternative. I think at this point there isn't a 'they and their', I think the point of capitalism as a memetic virus is that those at the top aren't really in control themselves, it's basically what skynet is a metaphor for in terminator. A memetic entity that has gotten out of the control of it's creators.

And wondering if you ever entertain the "crazy conspiracy theories".
I know that's posed as a "left vs. right" sorta schism at this point of the history of the control systems.
But certain ideas that Burroughs suggests are only fully accounted for when forbidden realms are taken seriously - "the dark arts of technology" sorta stuff, as exemplified by the "Montauk Project" theories (manipulating time & mind in ways Burroughs pondered, warned about, and perhaps experimented with).
Adam repeatedly denies validity and veracity to any such far-reaching nonsense. And yet, the borders of such topics do come into view, by way of the denials and dismissiveness. However, the further reaches of the topics taken up here do not come completely into view until a "history of mind-control" and its bio-specific technologies is accessible.
Deleuze was also no stranger to the questions of total control through bio-genetic mechanisms.
Is DNA actually a language-manipulated material? Were Burroughs' ideas of virus "only metaphor" - or literal, as when Deleuze & Guattari emphasize "we mean real fucking machines!!!"
Notably, in this episode, it is revealing that the topic of social-media censorship of "right-wing conspiracy theorists" was not taken up.
Maybe y'all think those masses needed to be exterminated from the public-political mainstreams. Or maybe you're not informed about the striking use of censorial ("fascistic") control in recent days - perhaps because of political affiliation and tendency.
Nevertheless, I love your podcast, your sharp intelligent minds, your breadth of topics considered, and all that jazz!
Personally speaking, it was a lot of years of incredible experiences within our programmed social control system that led me from being labelled (by others) as a violent anarchist, to when that label was changed to "alt-right conspurhissing-theormatician"....
