Lane Splitting Traffic Jam

  • You ever find yourself out riding, and end up stuck behind slower riders who refuse to get out of the way and let you split passed them in traffic? You ever end up behind a motor cop, and wish he would move his butt out of the way so you can pass, or are you concerned that he'll be a dick, stop you and cite you?
Part two of a recent motorcycle commute home.
    Thanks for watching!

I'd stay behind the motocop, no question. they clear the split lane for me and everyone and plus, you're already going faster than those cages.

Greetings From Little Rock Arkansas! 96 degrees and 100% humidity today. Did the commute to and from the J-O-B on my Connie. It seems that a lot of folks (not all) there actually do make room for bikes to split, just from watching your vlogs. Can't and wouldn't even try splitting here. Most car folk here don't understand the concept, and even if they made it legal, it would take years for car folk to adapt and respond correctly to splitting. I probably would lose both side bags if I tried it here.

I used to live in N.Y., on Long Island specifically. My commute used to be from just inside the Suffolk County line to Riverhead on the east end. Morning and night, the bulk of the traffic was moving in the opposite direction, so the Expressway was always pretty much wide open. Sometimes in the mornings, the county sheriffs would get on heading to the courts or jail in Riverhead. The speed limit was still 55 but almost every one of the guys would roll at 70MPH, which I regarded as being gentlemanly. The rest of us would follow along, looking like the starting pack behind the pace car at a NASCAR race. One morning an officer comes down the ramp crosses over to the left lane and is rolling at 70MPH. I’m behind him when a young woman comes up behind me, closing fast and then riding my rear bumper. I was almost going to ask for a reach around when I decided to move over and let her past. She then does the same to the sheriff, so he does exactly what I did. Move over and let her past. She immediately hammers down and oblivious to the sheriff now tailing her, starts running at well over 80MPH. He clocks her for about a mile then lights her up and pulls her over. I wished I had a recording of Nelson from the Simpsons that I could blare as I passed. Hah hah!

I tend to stay stuck behind slower riders. You hit the nail on the head, I may be too aggressive and someone could move over to make room and put the squeeze on the guy. Better just to stay patient in that respect. On the other hand, if someone comes up on me pretty fast, I move left and let them by. They may not give two craps about anything, roll right, and the car puts the squeeze on me.

I’m really fascinated with how motorcops ride. I’ve seen videos on RUclips on the type of training they do and how they maneuver the bike. Only wish that was allowed more for civilians. We have advanced rider clinics available but something about how a motor cop trains that seems pretty bad ass. I like your videos, more so with your other ones when you showcased that type of riding.

I was once behind a motocop as he checked the carpool lane for cars with a single occupant. It didn't take long for him to find one. But at that point the car stopped pretty much in the lane leaving me stuck behind our motocop friend where I was filtering. I took a break in the #2 lane to squirt out of there.

Your vids always take me back to my Attorney Service/messenger days in So California on my motorcycle(s). I used to move over and let you motor-officers "Split the Red Sea" for ME. No motorcycle gets the attention and respect of 'cagers' as does a black & white police motorcycle. They go from passive-aggressively trying to push you off the road to bowing as you motor by. I also learned early in life it's usually better to have police in front of you than following behind. Lol! Ride safe Officer Rob.

Hi Rob just found your site. Very interesting that California allows lane splitting for motor bikes. I am Canadian and bikers here would pay a stiff fine if they are caught lane splitting. I would think it would be a bit dangerous lane splitting if someone decides to change lanes and is not familiar with those rules for bikers. Ride safe. Your videos are very interesting.

Up in sf the sdpd and the rail transportation did reclassified hov lane are for bus lanes and cabs only. SF does not want to follow the state laws for any reason. Now sf muni is doing a job for the cops. They are handing or mailing tickets for violations like driving in a hov lanes in sf and they are not mart as transit lanes for the municipal state run bus system. They will give a moving violation for blocking the interception in sf and if you dare to park in legal parking spot next to the bus lanes or bus stop as well.

I like to keep a min of 2 -- 4 second bubble around me not easy on crowded roads . We are also aloud to use bus lanes etc Next bike show i will be at end of July on the Blood Bike Stand explaining to the general public what we do . keep safe hope you dont mind this biker from UK commenting

77* is hot? Dude, it's regularly 90s and super humid here in DMV, Virginia. I used to live in the Bay Area and Germany and don't see why lane sharing/splitting isn't legal in ALL states. When the traffic drops below 40 mph here and is heavy I start to split. I've only got very few people get mad (by honking as I pass). Do get the occasional bro in a truck that sees me in his rear/side view mirrors and purposely crowds the lane. Whatevs bro...

Lane splitting would be very useful, sadly it's not allowed here. Only filtering if there's 2 or more lanes going in the same direction, or during traffic where speed is less than 60 kph. I don't ride myself but I try to give the bikes space where ever I can. Some are trying to cut filterers or splitters off, especially semi's which just makes me cringe.

I gotta keep an eye out when im heading home. I ride the 60 from downtown into Ontario. If I see DHHHAAAAKKKNESSS ill be sure to throw up a CHEAH ! If you ever see a orange and black helmet with gold face shield thats most likely me ( I dont see my helmet often) I also wear a bright orange backpack cover. As for passing moto cops If they let me I do. They always let me pass with no problem. But I like to stay behind them, like you said they part the sea. Unlike regular riders, when a cop passes you people always drop their phones and actively search their mirrors to see if another cop is coming so chances of being seen go way up. I also have been hit due to the situation you mentioned. I was splitting in the normal lane. Biker came in between the 2 and 3 split. Scared the driver and they went into the 1 and 2 split hitting me :/. I have a vid on lane splitting etiquette, lmk what you think 😀

How about the legality of splitting on the double yellow/white lines for the HOV lanes? Common sense says it’s totally fine, but I always wonder if technically I’m breaking the law if I slightly cross the double yellow. No CHP would ever punish that for obvious reasons, but what if a biker is jumping in and out of the HOV lanes with insanity?
I imagine it’s simply a case where the law as written does not match the law as enforced. I guess speed limits are already like that, huh?

35MPH was thrown around before in the past, but I think thats out. There currently drafting hard-line rules, but for now, Speeds that are reasonably safe would be the best rule of thumb. spitting at higher speeds is a recipe for disaster. i typically keep it 45 mph and under. once the cagers are going 45 or more, I usually will cease splitting,. Not legal advice, just my 2 cents
