Thank you for your service. Also thank you for making thoughtful, intelligent, and helpful content. I’m nearly 70 years old and just discovered your channel a short time ago. I really enjoy your videos and hope you have continued success!!
God Bless you Sir. I appreciate my Old Timers, and all the information you guys/gals have to share and experienced.!!
Man that’s old. I am only 15 but hope you live another 100 years man!
Making videos about games is his service
I hope I’m still staying up on the world at 70 like you are!
AYN = 💩 !!!! Sur 4 consoles les 4 sont mortes !!!!!!
J'ai annulé TOUTES les pré commandes indiegogo car cela va être pareil avec un 888 gen 2 à 290$ ??? Fuyez !!!!!
Finally, the Odin lite review I’ve been waiting for
The most important one.
I don't understand why you guys like an android device built like a switch lite
Price and power
@@Las_cacas yeah but with that price phones can do that too and might be even better. How about playing LOL wildrift, PUBG, COD, ML etc. Using that? Unless its like switch with joycon
@@reinettetinekerr219 you seem like a troll but i am gonna say it anyway the Odin lite is almost the same price as a smartphone with the same processor. You obviously don't know the budget market where the xaomi note 4 is more powerful than redmi 9. Also physical buttons just feel different. I have been a mobile gamer all my life but got a x18s and recently a Odin pro. You won't know about them unless you own one. Also most of these have a touch screen and button mapping to touch.
Your videos have always had a chill vibe but the cozy relaxing set really takes it to the next level!
You are currently my favorite Tech RUclipsr. I'm really glad that you are going to become a full time RUclips! Can't wait for the new projects! Good luck on your new journey!
By the way, please don't make the review shorter. It's so relaxing to listen and chill in this longer videos.
I watch all your vids now as you helped me fixed my retro game console, you keep things simple but give out so much information, love the work and keep it up :)
Your videos are always so detailed and enjoyable to watch. Keep up the quality work. 👍
Great review! Still gold standard for reviews! 👍
My Lite just shipped the other day, can't wait!!
Just got my Odin Lite last week. And I got it within like, 5 days, prolly more or less. But it came in pretty quick. So the shipping problem is fixed now. Also managed to snag it at the discounted Summer sale price! Such a fun device, I use it for retro gaming but also my Android games like Aether Gazer thats much better with a built-in controller compared to using my phone for the touchscreen controls.
great to hear.
Amazing review! As always. Waiting on mine since June, but pretty patient as all reviews are amazing for this thing. Worth the wait.
Might consider the RP3 in the mean time as a commuting device (just in case the Odin gets nabbed).
This review is right on the money. It sounds like your experience with the AYN ODIN lite and mine are exactly the same. I am very impressed with the final product, but the year long wait was not ok.
Russ, next to Phawx, you're my favorite tech tuber--youve got amazing content and great production value, and you keep it informative, positive, and fun. Congrats on your retirement and I'm excited for your channel!
"I dont want something thats an hour long..."
Oh, but we do. I dig these vids. And the more you talk, the better I feel like I understand the device or process at hand.
Thank you for your service.
Great video and reflects my feelings as well. I have had the lite with the old screen since early July and it, along with the Steam Deck, are heads and shoulders above any other SBC’s that I own. But the year long wait was terrible and Ayn continues to stumble manufacturing these. Such a self-own and difficult to recommend until they can get their manufacturing issues sorted.
Congrats on your new studio and new chapter! well deserved!
Nice setup, great to see you growing as a content creator.
Keep the projects coming!
Thank you for your service and congrats on the retirement. My cousin retires from the Marines in October. Your content is some the best for retro device content. Keep up the great work!
Congratz bro! I'll be joining you on the civ side in a year!
Awesome review, Russ! One note about Ratchet and Clank as I’ve been playing it extensively on the Lite: it runs at 2x with the EE set to -1/1. It’ll run at 30 for more intense scenes (internal FPS so no actual slowdown), 60 at lighter ones, and 20 with a ton of enemies. I personally found it to be enjoyable but everyone’s mileage and perception will vary.
I was torn between the pro and the lite, but I ended with the pro. I love my pro. I have done some modding to it. I purchased the Sakura Mods Grey buttons for it, which are WAY better than the stock face buttons. I had some issues with the right bumper, and AYN sent me a repair kit relatively quickly, and I haven't had any issues since. My one personal issue, is the home button. I agree, I have hit that 100 times thinking it was the start button. I have been patiently waiting for Batocera to be ported over for it, I love android for emulation, but I HATE the frontends for it. I much prefer emulationstation for my retrogames.
Hiya, could I trouble you for a few words on how the Sakura buttons are better?
@@chedhead3278 Because of the smoother texture of the buttons, and the fact they are now a "Little" higher. I find my finger slides off them more comfortably. A good example of this would be throwing a shell up in Super Mario feels more slick with these buttons, when compared to the original ones. Also the paint was flaking off my old buttons, which will not happen with the Sakura ones.
@@Genguts Ahh, interesting. Thanks for the reply.
How is PS2 on the pro?
@@Phille023 I find it to be hit or miss. I dont really blame the Odin for that though, and some of my games definitely got better with the recent update to Aether. I honestly didnt know that PS2 was even going to be playable until after I put my money down for it. So it was a awesome surprise. Honest expectations is if your looking at it for JUST PS2, know that its decent and thats what I would say about it. I do believe that with more updates, it will get better. For now its just decent.
Love the preview of your new studio!
Very happy for you! The new studio looks great!
so glad you’re a full time youtuber now. you have great content and cover w niche in tech that i love
Good on you for your service. Good luck with the new career. And thanks for the vids.
Congratulations on retirement! I have really enjoyed following your channel and growth. Super cool Mil-Civ transition.
Great set, fantastic review, and quality content as always. Thanks Russ!
Nice Room! Happy to see your channel growing!
Thank you for your service and congrats on the retirement. Also also congrats on doing this full time! You deserve it!!
Set is looking almost as great as the beard. Waiting not so patiently on my Loki preorder. I want an Odin but can't justify both.
@@Pridetoons For me want to be able to play PC games natively especially PC Game Pass titles for cross saves and and achievements. I'm not very interested in emulation but will dabble.
Great review, I was very interested to see what you thought. Very happy with my own Odin Lite, especially since I got the super early bird with the original screen. Will have to check out your setup guide since you reckon its applicable to the Lite too - I assumed it would not be.
I love my pro but i do wish it had wifi 6. I play it on a daily basis during my commute and I absolutely love the device. My only knock on the company is the same as everyone else in that the order to door time is ridiculous. I ordered mine Jan 1st and it didn't arrive until late may. Keep up the good work Russ, thank you for your service and hope you enjoy retirement!
Only 90 seconds in and, I must say, Russ - looking and sounding great. Your comfort on camera and presentational skills have increased enormously… oh, and congratulations on both your beard, and your retirement.
And now I’ll watch the rest of it!
Ah nice, I see you have the Beard Pro! I'm jealous, unfortunately I'm stuck with the Beard Lite :(
Great review, Russ! I'm glad the Odin Lite still seems to be a home run after all the delays. Hopefully the shipping backlog will get cleared soon and more people can get their hands on it!
If this is your new format going forward - you talking to the camera in the intro - keep it up! Definitely nice to look at the set, and gives you a chance to connect with the viewers right off the bat.
Waiting "patiently" for my Pro to arrive. Love the videos, always! 👍👍
good luck with your new life journey!
Really dig the beard! And great review, Russ. Thanks!
Horray for a studio! Full time! Look forward to all your vids they're so heart warming, helpful and interesting.
Cheers Russ, the Lite looks good but ... 3.5 months wait for my Pro wasn't great though understandable given lockdowns and component supply issues at the time, that the situation isn't a whole lot better now is painful. It's a shame as it is a deeply impressive device in the hand.
The studio is looking really sharp on camera, nice one. :)
Good review 👍 when you tested the refresh rate issue I knew I was in good hands
Fantastic video, Russ! Loving the new setup!
Great review. That answered the question for me if the Odin lite was for me. The answer was “no man, I don’t want to do it”. Thanks Russ!
HOLY GUACAMOLE, i was JUST about to buy it yesterday, i wake up and BUM, a review, thank you.
Love the set up!
God bless you brother and thank you for your service, i watch all your content for support. You are amongst the best reviewers. In my opinion your honesty and great comparisons make you the success you are thanks again.
Bravo sir fantastic review and I am happy to wait some more for my own white lite which I hope will be here some day
The Odin lite looks pretty cool, also the beard is a good look man!
The music you put in your videos is awesome
Can't wait for the tour!
Nice new studio look and boy do you look different with a beard. It really suits you though.
If the Odin had been regularly available, no doubt I would have bought one but I bought an RG552 for retro. Now that I need an additional device, I reserved my Steam Deck. The wait for that is going to be tough but at least full payment isn’t required and should arrive sooner than any Odin model.
My white panda odin lite 8+64 has just shipped and it will be delivered on 9/1. I am very happy my handheld shipped. I pre order my on 1/25 so it been over 8 months since I preorder to being shipped.
Excellent review, thanks. It's a very interesting device.
I won't do the pre-order for anything ever. It's too easy to mess people around. Same goes for ordering direct from another country.
So you like it apart from what make it a handheld, ie the buttons and joysticks. For about the same money you could get a tablet with the same chipset and get it today. Pair a Bluetooth controller with better ergonomics that a lot of people have already and you get rid of every item on your Don't Like list.
Maybe some tablet reviews are warranted. What do you think Russ?
First of all, thank you for your service and congratulations on your retirement. I'm super excited that you'll be doing this full time now. Can't wait to see all the great new content you release.
Keep up the great work russ!
Great video.
I was always for the Lite for version for its price/performance value but not anymore.
Nothing to do with performance, battery or shipping.
One word... Linux. Apparently not possible on the Lite due to its chipset/kernal config, or something like that.
But it is possible on the Base and Pro.
So to have something like Batocera running on an Odin sometime in the future sounds great.
Infact if you check the Batocera wiki in the handheld section it shows an image of the Odin and in it is text that reads: "Not supported, yet"
So one day hopefully, it will happen.
Congratulations on your retirement. I cant wait to see how you will grow this channel.
Great review, thanks Russ. Where's Chicken? Also you seem very happy to be 'retiring' and I hope you're doing well with your new career, I can see you love what you're doing
I'd love to get an Odin (Lite or Pro), but with the fact it might take months for it ship here and shipping + customs costs, I just can't justify the purchase. Maybe I'll wait for an Odin 2 and hopefully I'll have more disposable income then.
Congratulations on the retirement, Master Chief! 🥳
I ordered the Base on the 26 of August and I pray I get it before the end of the year, luckily I have Hella devices not just handhelds to hold me over. I soley purchased this one in particular for mobile GameCube and ps2.
Love the new setup.
Unlikely to happen but with zero prototypes seen for the Loki there is also a slim chance it will get canceled.
Taking the time to properly explain the shipping chaos is appreciated, I think positioning yourself as just another customer is a great approach for these videos.
I just ordered one two days ago, my order number was close to 10000. I doubt they will cancel it. Will there be "chaos"? Maybe, possible, definitely. But I think they will rather go through more chaos than refund all that money and maybe even lose a ton of money due to visa chargebacks/refunds
it's a great device but having to wait 4 months to a year for this is really a deal breaker.
Ordered mine a week ago. It shipped already, I'll have it next week.
@@The6ixGun you already have it? what page did you order it on? ayn or indiegogo?
@@mariaceballos4991 Indiegogo
Ordered mine about a month ago and it just arrived.
New studio looks great and congrats on your retirement!
Ok well this just popped up in my feed
Can't watch until kids in bed later and I need to light some candles and have some mood lighting
I am sure this is gonna be a great video
Thanks Russ
Great comparison and review. The new screen isn't as bad as I thought, having 60hz is great. - Stubbs
I was really considering a pre order for this device....long story short back in June I decided to pre order a steam deck. I just got moved from q4 to q3 so I should see it by the end of next month. This seems like a great device too...and if they could ship them in a timely manner I might think about it again. Maybe some day
Wait, you placed a reservation *this June* and got moved up to Q3? I placed a reservation back in *early October last year* and just placed my order today! Valve must be ramping up production even faster than I thought!
I have no intention of bragging but I ordered the Steam deck UK 64GB end of January this year. I got me email last week with dispatched emails. Maybe there isn't much demad in the UK but it looks like Valve is ramping up production. Hope you guys get yours sooner.
This is the first time I ever pre-ordered anything. I got into console gaming in the PS3/360 generation in my 30's. The PS2 has a great library that I'd love to dig into, and I have quite a few PS2 games and a console, but I just can't go back to the lower resolution and frame rates. Additionally, period controllers are shot. I haven't found a good aftermarket solution. I bought this in the standard version to emulate as much PS2 possible at better frame rates and higher resolutions. I'm very much looking forward to jumping into the PS2 library with modern niceties.
Wait for the Aya neo air plus
For PS2 in particular, you might be surprised by how many games ran natively at 50/60fps in PAL/ NTSC territories respectively. PS2 has a pretty well-optimised library from a time where there wasn't so much bullish insistence on porting exact replicas of high-end PC games. That kind of thing was rife in the 360/ PS3 era, and so consequently, lower resolution notwithstanding, PS2 games tend to feel a lot smoother than a lot of the next generation fare. If you can play PS2 on a CRT, you'd be very surprised by how great it looks and feels. The closest thing today is using an OSSC or RT5X scaler and faking a CRT-like interlaced image with bobbing scanline emulation.
Hey Russ! Love the videos as always. Coming down to brass tax... Should I go with the Pro or the Lite? I'm leaning more to the Lite.
Good to see ya!
Haven't watched the video yet but the beard is awesome bro!
I ordered my Odin Pro I believe Feb 2, shortly after watching one of your videos about it. It arrived on my doorstep a couple of weeks ago. By then, I'd already moved on to another handheld to fill in the gap I'd wanted for the Odin Pro. Still debating on whether or not I want to keep it.
The device is amazing, but in this day and age, especially with something like the retro/PC handheld market, having to wait 6+ months for a device means that device may be functionally obsolete by the time you get it.
@@Pridetoons Allow me to rephrase my statement, then. The device is amazing, but perhaps not 6+ month wait amazing--especially when the IGG campaign I ordered off of made no mention of such a long wait. Had I known that I would likely be waiting until mid-August to get my Odin Pro when I purchased it in February--instead of April/May as was the estimate at the time--I would not have purchased it. Other opinions may differ on that matter, but having a wait time that long will drive customers away. (It drove me away from the SD when I managed to miss my window because, go figure, I work for a living and don't always have the chance to check email on busy weeks. Better luck next time.)
YMMV.
Congratulations on your retirement, and thank you for service!
Russ, your Odin Pro review inspired me to order an Odin Pro off the Ayn website. In May. To start shipping August 1. And next week it'll be September. So yeah, still no Odin.
I'm really looking forward to my Odin because it sounds like everything I've ever wanted from a handheld emulation console. But considering their track record, they could promise the Loki will come with a free kitten and a pot of gold, but I'm not prepared to buy anything from Ayn again until they figure out their logistics.
Did you get it yet?
@@marcwilliams9824 It finally arrived at the start of the month, and it is everything I could ask for in a handheld console for retro gaming. It looks like after the unexpected crush Ayn got from the Odin Pro and Lite, they're finally starting to catch up. I wish them the best in the future, but I think there are still a lot of people who are going to be put off buying their future product lines unless they can get their act together and keep it together.
@@r.l.royalljr.3905 I'm looking at buying the Lite. Just checking this video to see if there's any significant difference. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your Pro.
@@marcwilliams9824 From what I've gathered on their Discord, it looks like the Pro has slightly more power (slightly better at GameCube/Wii/PS2/PSP) but the Lite comes with a SIM slot if you have a tablet data plan and the weaker processor gives you a little bit better battery life. Otherwise they're basically identical.
bearded look is great! I would be interested to see your retro gaming setup sometime too. Just noticing what i think is a CRT in the background. Nice review of the Lite. I didn't even think to try some N64 retroarch cores on my pro, but that would be nice to mess with in order to use Retroachievements.
Thanks for your service Russ!
1. I just subscribed. Don't know why I hadn't before now. 2. There are so many of these things on the market it's getting hard to get excited any more. Retroid. GPS. Odin. Neo. If you're only playing 8 or 16 bit games any of these devices are the same. The only differences come when you try to emulate things from N64 forward.
That rubber band setup on the streaming test.. lol excellent
Nice setup. Different look for a change from your top down view and voice over
I just noticed one thing, I spend more time watching your videos than playing games.. thanks!!!
Just canceled my Loki Zero, tired of waiting.. and by your opinions on the buttons I think for me is better to wait less and buy the new anbernic when availble with excelent controls. (and maybe good ergonomics ..)
Not getting a lite (cancelled mine after both AYN and AYA NEO announces their more budget lines of x64 handheld) , but I would definitely prefer the newer 60hz screen compared to the previous 61hz screen even at the expense of battery life which is still outstanding with the new screen.
I would much rather have better battery life over getting rid of some stutters which I don't even notice 95% of the time with my Pro. I guess everyone is different, though.
Both Ayn and aya are gonna release thier handhelds in 2023 so if you order now you will probably get it in January or something. Also you will regret buying from aya because as soon as you buy one thier will be a better one as they release a new one every 4 months now.
Awesome review! I will wait for the Loki to come out. By that time Aya Neo Air 2 will be out with a better chip.
Congrats on your separation. And the beard looks very nice.
That sonic frame looks real nice man
How does the plastic of the white shell feel in the hand compared to the transparent purple shell? I had the purple Odin Pro and the plastic felt really rough and unpleasant to me and was a major factor in my decision to sell it off.
"You know how I am, I'm kind of long winded"
Which is exactly why most of us watch. You cover a lot of things people want to know about.
This would be the lineup to beat.... IF they could ship within a reasonable time frame. I'm personally betting on a similarly-powered PCB upgrade for the RP3 being released and shipped before these even get out the door.
Great review, as always. Thanks!
The form factor of the Odin is still a winner, for me. Don't like the left thumbstick being at the bottom for most of the games I'd be intending to play. I think the retro handheld scene is still a bit stuck in the mindset that everyone is using these to play 2D games mostly when the hardware is now capable of so much more. Of course there will always be handhelds targeted at SNES era or older emulation (e.g. Miyoo Mini) but that should be the preserve of cheaper, smaller devices imo.
@@liamness I prefer the XBox layout as well; much better balance. And I'd *love* to see analog triggers become the norm.
@@liamness this! I cant find a device other than potentially this odin that I deem worth the investment. literally non of the others, at all. I do not want a 2D strict device.
@@clc6433 analog triggers are a must for me.
...and then I ended up getting the Odin Pro out of spite. Retroid gave its supporters a HUGE slap in the face by not offering a proper discount to current RP3 owners. I shoulda listened to Taki.
Another thing that could hit battery life in the Odin Lite is the Cellular capacity. As in our phones, if it is connected via cellular, the battery will drain quicker.
Im a service member too! I just wanna tell you thank you for not letting the military be your focal point of your personality and for being you!
2:41 that O.C.D. hahaha xD, i'll do the same, great review!
Happy retirement! And Thank you for your service!
I finally caved and decided to get an Odin Lite. It's definitely easier to get now; it only took about 2 weeks to arrive at my door. I like my Retroid Pocket 3, but wanted a bigger screen. I might try the free version of Launch Box as a frontend.
Any regrets getting the lite instead of the pro? What are some pros and cons for the lite thinking of getting one
@@devin9748 No regrets so far. I can't really say what the pros and cons are between the two. I've only played some Super Nintendo and Gameboy Color games on it so far.
good to hear that the shipping stuff might not be as big of an issue now
Hey Russ, great video! Do you experience any resistance from the analog triggers? On my panda lite, they rubbed against the case, causing noticeable resistance at about 60% press. I had to file/sand down the inside of the trigger holes to free up space and stop the rubbing.
My partner ordered one today (27/11/22) as an xmas present for me. I'll let you know if it arrives before xmas 2023.
It should? They say 5 yo 7 days handling time then like another week to deliver
Good review! But I hope you could show out the decoding latency while testing moonlight.
So rarely see your face! Looking sharp, brother! And thanks for your service!
So this made me feel better about getting the top o the line Pro model a few months back.
The man the beard the legend 🧔👌
I’m back as a refresher of what to expect more or less for performance on the retroid pocket 4/4 pro.
Love those cushions!
I love my Odin Pro. I'm considering the Odin Lite for my wife as she mostly would play PS1. I let her use my Miyoo Mini and PSPgo but she didn't like how small it was.
What does she look like?
