It’ll run at 30 for more intense scenes (internal FPS so no actual slowdown), 60 at lighter ones, and 20 with a ton of enemies. I personally found it to be enjoyable but everyone’s mileage and perception will vary.

Great video and reflects my feelings as well. I have had the lite with the old screen since early July and it, along with the Steam Deck, are heads and shoulders above any other SBC’s that I own. But the year long wait was terrible and Ayn continues to stumble manufacturing these. Such a self-own and difficult to recommend until they can get their manufacturing issues sorted.

If this is your new format going forward - you talking to the camera in the intro - keep it up! Definitely nice to look at the set, and gives you a chance to connect with the viewers right off the bat.
Cheers Russ, the Lite looks good but ... 3.5 months wait for my Pro wasn't great though understandable given lockdowns and component supply issues at the time, that the situation isn't a whole lot better now is painful. It's a shame as it is a deeply impressive device in the hand. The studio is looking really sharp on camera, nice one. :)
Nice new studio look and boy do you look different with a beard. It really suits you though. I'd love to get an Odin (Lite or Pro), but with the fact it might take months for it ship here and shipping + customs costs, I just can't justify the purchase. Maybe I'll wait for an Odin 2 and hopefully I'll have more disposable income then.

I ordered my Odin Pro I believe Feb 2, shortly after watching one of your videos about it. It arrived on my doorstep a couple of weeks ago. By then, I'd already moved on to another handheld to fill in the gap I'd wanted for the Odin Pro. Still debating on whether or not I want to keep it. The device is amazing, but in this day and age, especially with something like the retro/PC handheld market, having to wait 6+ months for a device means that device may be functionally obsolete by the time you get it.
@@Pridetoons Allow me to rephrase my statement, then. The device is amazing, but perhaps not 6+ month wait amazing--especially when the IGG campaign I ordered off of made no mention of such a long wait. Had I known that I would likely be waiting until mid-August to get my Odin Pro when I purchased it in February--instead of April/May as was the estimate at the time--I would not have purchased it. Other opinions may differ on that matter, but having a wait time that long will drive customers away. (It drove me away from the SD when I managed to miss my window because, go figure, I work for a living and don't always have the chance to check email on busy weeks. Better luck next time.) YMMV.
This is the first time I ever pre-ordered anything. I got into console gaming in the PS3/360 generation in my 30's. The PS2 has a great library that I'd love to dig into, and I have quite a few PS2 games and a console, but I just can't go back to the lower resolution and frame rates. Additionally, period controllers are shot. I haven't found a good aftermarket solution. I bought this in the standard version to emulate as much PS2 possible at better frame rates and higher resolutions. I'm very much looking forward to jumping into the PS2 library with modern niceties.
For PS2 in particular, you might be surprised by how many games ran natively at 50/60fps in PAL/ NTSC territories respectively. PS2 has a pretty well-optimised library from a time where there wasn't so much bullish insistence on porting exact replicas of high-end PC games. That kind of thing was rife in the 360/ PS3 era, and so consequently, lower resolution notwithstanding, PS2 games tend to feel a lot smoother than a lot of the next generation fare. If you can play PS2 on a CRT, you'd be very surprised by how great it looks and feels. The closest thing today is using an OSSC or RT5X scaler and faking a CRT-like interlaced image with bobbing scanline emulation.
Russ, your Odin Pro review inspired me to order an Odin Pro off the Ayn website. In May. To start shipping August 1. And next week it'll be September. So yeah, still no Odin. I'm really looking forward to my Odin because it sounds like everything I've ever wanted from a handheld emulation console. But considering their track record, they could promise the Loki will come with a free kitten and a pot of gold, but I'm not prepared to buy anything from Ayn again until they figure out their logistics.
@@marcwilliams9824 It finally arrived at the start of the month, and it is everything I could ask for in a handheld console for retro gaming. It looks like after the unexpected crush Ayn got from the Odin Pro and Lite, they're finally starting to catch up. I wish them the best in the future, but I think there are still a lot of people who are going to be put off buying their future product lines unless they can get their act together and keep it together.
@@r.l.royalljr.3905 I'm looking at buying the Lite. Just checking this video to see if there's any significant difference. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your Pro.
@@marcwilliams9824 From what I've gathered on their Discord, it looks like the Pro has slightly more power (slightly better at GameCube/Wii/PS2/PSP) but the Lite comes with a SIM slot if you have a tablet data plan and the weaker processor gives you a little bit better battery life. Otherwise they're basically identical.
This would be the lineup to beat.... IF they could ship within a reasonable time frame. I'm personally betting on a similarly-powered PCB upgrade for the RP3 being released and shipped before these even get out the door. Great review, as always. Thanks!
The form factor of the Odin is still a winner, for me. Don't like the left thumbstick being at the bottom for most of the games I'd be intending to play. I think the retro handheld scene is still a bit stuck in the mindset that everyone is using these to play 2D games mostly when the hardware is now capable of so much more. Of course there will always be handhelds targeted at SNES era or older emulation (e.g. Miyoo Mini) but that should be the preserve of cheaper, smaller devices imo.
@@liamness this! I cant find a device other than potentially this odin that I deem worth the investment. literally non of the others, at all. I do not want a 2D strict device.
...and then I ended up getting the Odin Pro out of spite. Retroid gave its supporters a HUGE slap in the face by not offering a proper discount to current RP3 owners. I shoulda listened to Taki.
I finally caved and decided to get an Odin Lite. It's definitely easier to get now; it only took about 2 weeks to arrive at my door. I like my Retroid Pocket 3, but wanted a bigger screen. I might try the free version of Launch Box as a frontend.
@@devin9748 No regrets so far. I can't really say what the pros and cons are between the two. I've only played some Super Nintendo and Gameboy Color games on it so far.
My white panda odin lite 8+64 has just shipped and it will be delivered on 9/1. I am very happy my handheld shipped. I pre order my on 1/25 so it been over 8 months since I preorder to being shipped.
Not getting a lite (cancelled mine after both AYN and AYA NEO announces their more budget lines of x64 handheld) , but I would definitely prefer the newer 60hz screen compared to the previous 61hz screen even at the expense of battery life which is still outstanding with the new screen.
I would much rather have better battery life over getting rid of some stutters which I don't even notice 95% of the time with my Pro. I guess everyone is different, though.
Both Ayn and aya are gonna release thier handhelds in 2023 so if you order now you will probably get it in January or something. Also you will regret buying from aya because as soon as you buy one thier will be a better one as they release a new one every 4 months now.
God bless you brother and thank you for your service, i watch all your content for support. You are amongst the best reviewers. In my opinion your honesty and great comparisons make you the success you are thanks again.
Ok well this just popped up in my feed Can't watch until kids in bed later and I need to light some candles and have some mood lighting I am sure this is gonna be a great video Thanks Russ
I was really considering a pre order for this device....long story short back in June I decided to pre order a steam deck. I just got moved from q4 to q3 so I should see it by the end of next month. This seems like a great device too...and if they could ship them in a timely manner I might think about it again. Maybe some day
Wait, you placed a reservation *this June* and got moved up to Q3? I placed a reservation back in *early October last year* and just placed my order today! Valve must be ramping up production even faster than I thought!
I have no intention of bragging but I ordered the Steam deck UK 64GB end of January this year. I got me email last week with dispatched emails. Maybe there isn't much demad in the UK but it looks like Valve is ramping up production. Hope you guys get yours sooner.
Great video. I was always for the Lite for version for its price/performance value but not anymore. Nothing to do with performance, battery or shipping. One word... Linux. Apparently not possible on the Lite due to its chipset/kernal config, or something like that. But it is possible on the Base and Pro. So to have something like Batocera running on an Odin sometime in the future sounds great. Infact if you check the Batocera wiki in the handheld section it shows an image of the Odin and in it is text that reads: "Not supported, yet" So one day hopefully, it will happen.
1. I just subscribed. Don't know why I hadn't before now. 2. There are so many of these things on the market it's getting hard to get excited any more. Retroid. GPS. Odin. Neo. If you're only playing 8 or 16 bit games any of these devices are the same. The only differences come when you try to emulate things from N64 forward.
Great review, thanks Russ. Where's Chicken? Also you seem very happy to be 'retiring' and I hope you're doing well with your new career, I can see you love what you're doing
The battery difference is clearly the screen, I think Taki talked about it in one of his last videos about it, the new screen just gulps energy like TWICE as much as the old one I think ? anyway, honestly I'm probably going to play my Odin Lite at minimum brightness almost all the time, it's what I do with all my devices (smartphone, laptop, etc...) I just don't understand people who jack up the brightness to be completely honest.
I ordered my Odin Lite on May 17th 2022 and got the ship notification today, if anyone's looking for a more accurate shipping timeline. Ayn is also way behind their production forecast, so if they ever reach those production numbers, the wait will be even shorter.
I ordered the Base on the 26 of August and I pray I get it before the end of the year, luckily I have Hella devices not just handhelds to hold me over. I soley purchased this one in particular for mobile GameCube and ps2.
Great review, I was very interested to see what you thought. Very happy with my own Odin Lite, especially since I got the super early bird with the original screen. Will have to check out your setup guide since you reckon its applicable to the Lite too - I assumed it would not be.
The battery life is 100% related to the screen Andy talked about the differences in the wattage in update 61 and Taki made a segment on it I think. They have said they intend to sell "old" screen kits once the supplier can make them again for people who want to switch. Personally I read the shipment situation as improving. The too many SKUs thing is a problem but mainly because they're trying to equitably fulfill indiegogo orders so they're making a weird mix every day. As they get to retail production they should be able to just have the production line make bigger batches of the same sku for a day which should be more efficient. So barring more supply issues coming up or Loki eating into their production capacity I would expect their shipping timelines to get better over time as long as there's sufficient demand to justify batch production.
Saw a video somewhere with odin lite doing switch emulation and it was amazing, it's basically a switch lite that I can play tony hawk games and game pass on
Another thing that could hit battery life in the Odin Lite is the Cellular capacity. As in our phones, if it is connected via cellular, the battery will drain quicker.
I just noticed one thing, I spend more time watching your videos than playing games.. thanks!!! Just canceled my Loki Zero, tired of waiting.. and by your opinions on the buttons I think for me is better to wait less and buy the new anbernic when availble with excelent controls. (and maybe good ergonomics ..)
I love my Odin Pro. I'm considering the Odin Lite for my wife as she mostly would play PS1. I let her use my Miyoo Mini and PSPgo but she didn't like how small it was.

Additionally, period controllers are shot. I haven't found a good aftermarket solution. I bought this in the standard version to emulate as much PS2 possible at better frame rates and higher resolutions. I'm very much looking forward to jumping into the PS2 library with modern niceties.
Wait for the Aya neo air plus
Did you get it yet?
Haven't watched the video yet but the beard is awesome bro!
My partner ordered one today (27/11/22) as an xmas present for me. I'll let you know if it arrives before xmas 2023.
It should? They say 5 yo 7 days handling time then like another week to deliver
Fantastic video, Russ! Loving the new setup!
@@liamness I prefer the XBox layout as well; much better balance. And I'd *love* to see analog triggers become the norm.
@@liamness this! I cant find a device other than potentially this odin that I deem worth the investment. literally non of the others, at all. I do not want a 2D strict device.
@@clc6433 analog triggers are a must for me.
...and then I ended up getting the Odin Pro out of spite. Retroid gave its supporters a HUGE slap in the face by not offering a proper discount to current RP3 owners. I shoulda listened to Taki.
congratz with full-time youtubing 👍
I finally caved and decided to get an Odin Lite. It's definitely easier to get now; it only took about 2 weeks to arrive at my door. I like my Retroid Pocket 3, but wanted a bigger screen. I might try the free version of Launch Box as a frontend.
Any regrets getting the lite instead of the pro? What are some pros and cons for the lite thinking of getting one
@@devin9748 No regrets so far. I can't really say what the pros and cons are between the two. I've only played some Super Nintendo and Gameboy Color games on it so far.
good to hear that the shipping stuff might not be as big of an issue now
My white panda odin lite 8+64 has just shipped and it will be delivered on 9/1. I am very happy my handheld shipped. I pre order my on 1/25 so it been over 8 months since I preorder to being shipped.
New studio looks great and congrats on your retirement!
That rubber band setup on the streaming test.. lol excellent
That sonic frame looks real nice man
Congrats on your separation. And the beard looks very nice.
Ok well this just popped up in my feed
Can't watch until kids in bed later and I need to light some candles and have some mood lighting
I am sure this is gonna be a great video
Thanks Russ
Love the set up!
I just got the Odin lite in 8 days. No import tax and 22$ shipping. Very fast!
Nice setup. Different look for a change from your top down view and voice over
The music you put in your videos is awesome
Great video.
I was always for the Lite for version for its price/performance value but not anymore.
Nothing to do with performance, battery or shipping.
One word... Linux. Apparently not possible on the Lite due to its chipset/kernal config, or something like that.
But it is possible on the Base and Pro.
So to have something like Batocera running on an Odin sometime in the future sounds great.
Infact if you check the Batocera wiki in the handheld section it shows an image of the Odin and in it is text that reads: "Not supported, yet"
So one day hopefully, it will happen.
Congratulations on the retirement, Master Chief! 🥳
Great set, fantastic review, and quality content as always. Thanks Russ!
Love the new setup.
I ordered my Odin Lite on May 17th 2022 and got the ship notification today, if anyone's looking for a more accurate shipping timeline. Ayn is also way behind their production forecast, so if they ever reach those production numbers, the wait will be even shorter.
Oh wow really good thing I didn't order it lol I guess rp3 is my only option instead of waiting
So rarely see your face! Looking sharp, brother! And thanks for your service!
Happy retirement! And Thank you for your service!
Congrats on the retirement! Enjoy yourself Bro!
Love the beard, love the pillows!
Bravo sir fantastic review and I am happy to wait some more for my own white lite which I hope will be here some day
Saw a video somewhere with odin lite doing switch emulation and it was amazing, it's basically a switch lite that I can play tony hawk games and game pass on
Oh my Lord it's a real Odin Lite. Now if we can see a real Loki we'll be set. Great video!
Welcome to the beard club brother!!
Another thing that could hit battery life in the Odin Lite is the Cellular capacity. As in our phones, if it is connected via cellular, the battery will drain quicker.
Congrats on your retirement! I plan to beard it up when I retire as well.
Keep up the great work russ!
2:41 that O.C.D. hahaha xD, i'll do the same, great review!
For $200 this is a lot better than other android handhelds costing more than a steam deck or switch oled
I really need that live wallpaper.. so cool
Welcome to the DD-214 club!!! From one veteran to another thanks for your service. Keep up the great work!
I love my Odin Pro. I'm considering the Odin Lite for my wife as she mostly would play PS1. I let her use my Miyoo Mini and PSPgo but she didn't like how small it was.
What does she look like?
Congratulations on going a fulltime RUclipsr 👍
You have no idea how much I appreciate you talking about the horrible part about this system dude!!! 👏👏👏 Everywhere you look when it comes to these handheld types systems lately, people are blabing about "just get an Odin" when in reality who knows when you would even get the dayum thing!?!? I'd love one! But I'm waaay to impatient for all that jerking around ayn does! 🤦
