My aging, nearly blind Mom arrived yesterday, and is going to be staying with me on a sudden, emergency basis. She needs help to do this type this dialysis, and I was stressed beyond belief last night, trying to figure out how to do this for her. With this instruction, I was able to successfully do her dialysis today. Thank you SO MUCH for this video!
@@dannistarr2178 well, it was really only for a week in total, and also I’m on a partially-subsidized assistance program, so I’m likely not the best reference for answering this question.
I just love this video, it’s so informative. My dad started a week ago and I went to the training @ Davita here in Brooklyn New York, he’s enjoying PD so much better.
I am preparing to start this soon. I'm terrified! There are so many steps to follow! I'm sure I won't have any problems; it's just the thought of going through everything!
It's a big responsibility but it's still 100 times better than hemo at a center. At home, you are in charge of your own care. It tends to make you aware of other things you can do to lengthen your lifespan, such as diet and exercise. With even the best techs, at the centers you basically deteriorate waiting on a transplant because you feel so exhausted all the time. As much as she wanted to get out of the clinic, my sister went through a few last-minute panic attacks before beginning her PD. 🙄🙄 It IS a big step. Your terror proves you know it's a major change for you. My sis is much happier now. We wish you the best.
Wow me too I AM TERRIFIED AS WELL but only time can tell I just found out 3 days ago I have to be back on dialysis and I absolutely don't wanna do hemo so km trying PD at home dialysis FINGERS CROSSED for the both of us I hope this goes well
I'm near the end of training sessions to assist my partner. I've gone through the entire process about 4 times using a dummy. It felt overwhelming at the beginning, but I've become more comfortable with each practice session. The training team has provided a laminated step by step instruction set and carefully watches everything I do and is always encouraging.
Not exactly the way I do it, but close, it was fun to see how other regions do it. There is a lot of emphasis on cleaning my wound site, even though it was placed 10 months ago. Also, I am trained to clean my machine with bleach/water solution. And I do not have a connector between the line from the machine and my catheter. And thank goodness I wear gloves that I change a couple of times during set up.
Q? I’ve been doing dialysis for 3yrs now 3 x a week 3hrs/45min. I’m 45yr. I’m interested in trying home dialysis but I’m not sure how I will feel with a connector attached to my belly bcuz of my activities I enjoy. I just like to know how comfortable is it to use this machine
@@codacain2201 The catheter is almost painless after around 4 week from surgery but your stomach muscles will be very weak due to the hole where the pipe enters, they will tell you not to lift anything because its very easy to get a hernia with the pipe installed.
Hows the PD going? I had my first treatment on this machine today and it gets delivered tomorrow. Do you manage to sleep through the drain cycle? as i think it may wake me every night when the cramps start? Hope all is well 🤞
Interesting video, I like the way you load the cassette, but my PD nursing colleagues and I are shocked by your double handling technique when connecting the bags. The point of the blue organiser is so you can safely remove the cap from the line and leave it while you remove the cap from the bag, and THEN bring the two together. How do you expect to routinely and safely prevent touch contamination with double handling??
Do you mean you remove the caps from the lines while they are connected to the organizer? Then remove the caps from the bag and bring that line to the lines on the organizer? So you don't have to grab both lines while they connect ? You connect the bag lines while the other lines are still on the organizer?
Thank you so much for this informative video. My Dad will start this treatment soon. Can you please advise me which are the reputed and most reliable APD Cycler machines on the market? Thanks.
My Father’s got a Automated PD Machine that uses 3 Dialysate Bags and has 2 Drain Bags. 😯 Also when the supply shipment comes in, we never get those Connection Shields for the Safety Lines right when you connect the Patient Line to the Catheter Line.😱
Thank you for sharing this video 🙏🙏🙏 how about if the machine error or alarm? Because I am a caregiver here in Taiwan and I doing this but sometimes I forget the others step because the machine they put a Chinese word
Washing hands during this type of dialysis is extremely important. Failure to wash your hands can lead to a very serious infection of the peritoneum cavity - called peritonitis.
This seems so cumbersome, But I think it'll be worth it. I had my first hemo dialysis session yesterday and hated it. Sitting in one spot for four hours is ridiculous!😡
Anybody got any tips to make the "drain pain" a bit less painful? Just had my first night on the machine, woke up every time the drain cycle started, any advice would be appreciated
Try using a heating pad on your stomach for one. Two turn down the connector to slow the flow. Three contact your nurse and she can program the machine to not empty you all the way until the final drain. At that point you have to power thru it ! If pain persist tell your nurse and doctor who may refer you back to your surgeon
Hope you got it sorted, not a nice feeling putting under temp fluid in. I made a mistake the other week when i switched back to manual bags for a holspital test, i forgot to heat the bag at all, really bad cramps 🤨
Well I’m sure you know now. But usually you start on manual dialysis then graduate to the machine as you have basic knowledge of how to do an exchange. The only time you use a machine straight away is when it’s such an emergent condition you can’t use manual
Hi. I am a nurse from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I took a course on this machine. I was told that the company ships equipment and supplies worldwide
@@jellywei0903 Yes, I've been doing it for around 2 months now, i struggle sleeping whilst the machine runs its drain cycle so I do my dialysis late afternoon/evening. How about you?
My machine has started doing this recenlty, I don't understand it either because it always takes me around 20 mins to complete setup so the bag should always be at the same temp, i wonder if the heater is failing
It just means the bag has not warmed up enough yet. Probably stored in cool area. It will warm and then proceed. Unless you suspect heater issues, there is nothing to worry about. (I get this once in a while doing dialysis for my mom when we have a defective bag and get a new one from the cool storage room at the last minute.)
because in this video, they wash hands many many times! But do take note of not opening both ends at the same time - one commentator commented on it (double handling)....
The heater is on top of the machine, the bag on top is on the heater, the other bag/bags get sucked into the bag on top and heated, hope that makes sense..
The fan and AC are turned off during set-up and during end of therapy to minimise the amount of dust particles flying in the air that may contaminate the open connections, to avoid peritonitis.
Fan and AC are only off while making sterile connections. Once everything is connected you can turn fans and AC back on until you disconnect at the end of the session.
Yes this is available in India. The manual version of PD is approx Rs 30k per month (similar to hospital based haemodialysis), whereas the cycler based Automated PD is approx Rs 70k per month.
The air has to be still when the line is open during opening and capping of catheter. If you get anything in your line, in your system, you can get peritonitis. Your hands have to be clean. You have to wear a face mask. You cannot accidentally touch the end of an open catheter. It's very important that the air is not stirred when catheter is open.
time LOST during the process due to process error such as the drain not draining properly. The machine is programmed for a certain amount on dwell time per patient. Lost Dwell means time that the medicine was not able to dwell in the patient.

Curious about the supplies laid out at the beginning. There is no Mini Cap included, even though one is called for the close the transfer set.

There is an emergency disconnect protocol that you would follow.

Ask your nurse to set a tidal for you. A tidal is when fluid is left in you after your drain to keep your catheter floating. This prevents drain pain
Too Good and important for me
Why fan and ac are switch off? What is the reason behind that
Air flow let’s bacteria float around the room more. For infection purposes, it’s best to just turn them off.
Airborn germs.

Fan and AC are only off while making sterile connections. Once everything is connected you can turn fans and AC back on until you disconnect at the end of the session.
