Bobby Koelble - Death "Symbolic" Solos Play-Along

  • To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Death's "Symbolic", I decided to create a play-along video of the solos that I contributed to the album. I stuck to the primary parts that I played live and didn’t include the overdubbed harmonies, etc. The Washburn EC 29 that I'm playing here is not the guitar I played on the album, but is pretty much it's twin, and was the guitar that I used as a backup during the Symbolic tours (however, I did play a couple of shows with it, and Chuck actually played it onstage once when he broke a string on his Stealth). I actually like this guitar a little better than the one I recorded with, but didn't use it much since it's obviously not a very death metal-looking instrument ;) Hope you enjoy it, and please like and subscribe if you do!

Exactly! Very refreshing, if I may say exotic :) Not some nonsense shredding with repetive arpeggios and what not. Symbolic is my fav album of all times, pure poetry.

No eres el único, amigo. Los solos de Bobby son muy particulares, con una mezcla de melodia y destreza pocas veces vista en el Metal extremo. El solo de Perennial Quest sigue estando entre mis favoritos de la vida ♥️

Hands down the best "second guitarist" Death had. Paul Masvidal is a genius but he wasn't quite there at the time of Death. James Murphys solos sound like guitar picking exercises, very uninspired. Andy Larocque and Shannon Hamm were fine but by their time it was just fully the Chuck show.

I literally hate that this is the only album you played on. Above Masvidal, above Hamm, above Murphy, above even Larocque. Phrasing is disturbing and cosmic. Absolutely love these solos. The Symbolic solo hurts to listen to and it's glorious.
And the best part is that even though you're clearly a jazz guy, you're getting off on the metal stuff. There's no faking it. You're enjoying what you're playing regardless of the genre.
