Farmers always have had the discretion to sell their produce either to govt at MSP or to traders. So, the crux was that farmers always used to get atleast MSP either by selling to govt or to trader. However, farmers have never had any means nor will they ever have any means to take their produce to sell in other mandis or states, say from Chandigarh to Bangalore. This is also a known fact that only about 6% of entire produce was being bought by government at MSP and rest everything was sold to traders by farmers.
Secondly, passing of all these laws has to be coupled with the intention of Indian Govt. These laws have also removed the storage limit and abetted hoarding, so as to say, govt has rather made hoarding legal. Without pointing out any specific names, everyone knows which business house(s) are ultimately going to establish their monopolies.

Why do Punjab farmers almost exclusively grow Wheat and Rice? Whereas India has to import in large quantities of oil seeds and various types of millets and pulses every year? Logically, they would stand to make a profit if they change their crops, but they don't ask yourselves why? Also, every year tons and tons of wheat rots at FCI warehouses (or at least thanks to Nitin Gadhkari made into ethanol), why are we still growing wheat when we have surplus?

    • @raiparam28
      @raiparam28 3 года назад

tell government to ensure fair price for said oil seeds , pulses etc , they will definitely grow them. In fact variety of crops are grown in Punjab though maximum acreage is under wheat & rice only because timely payment of msp is given in case of wheat/rice. people grow sugarcane too but their payments gets delayed by year or so, it becomes difficult to sustain when you do not get paid for a year . Surplus grains can be exported but our government is reluctant to do so. there is still lot of hunger around the world, even In India there is large population which is not able manage 2 square meals a day with ease . Haven't you seen during lockdowns how people were distributed with food grains, so what surplus are you talking about( the same surplus came handy in times of emergency like in covid lockdowns). Crux is government is pro corporate rather than pro common man.

Faye D'Souza has mastered the art of subtly pass on her politically coloured opinions as news analysis. To be fair she set a context based on some facts and not pure rhetorics but she, quite expectedly , does not address the elephant in the room. How MSPs and Food stocking have been taking money from we the taxpayers from all over the country and passing it to the RICH , sometimes STINKING RICH "Farmers" or rather middlemen, musclemen from Punjab and Haryana while the food purchased from them get rotten to the tune of 2 LAKH Crores. YES that's the amount we have been paying to the rich "FARMERS" of Punjab and Haryana who then make Punjab "Udta Punjab". Thats why these so called Poor framers who can afford the most expensive cars, drugs and foreign travels are sending people on the street to protest.. coz there FREE WEALTH making machinery at the cost of tax payers money is being challenged.

Get a few facts right, before going public. For example:
    1. The dispute resolution is left to parties . Recourse to SDM is optional to be mutually agreed. Only when SDM is opted and order passed courts are excluded. Further of course constitutional courts of records cannot be excluded by any law. This is settled law already.
    2. Hoarding makes sense if there is supply side constraints. By making it national market outside Mandis farmers are not left to mercy if Artiyas and can choose any buyer across India. Now with deregulation investment in supply chain and quick excavation of produce from farm gate will take place. This will not only reduce table prices for consumers but will pre empt lots of wastages.
Who is impacted most? Of course the Artiyas whose predatory monopoly ends.
Have you visited a APMC mandi ? And seen how trade happens on rigged prices and how dispute resolution happen....
    Amazing !!!

If a corporate hoards tons of potato which is not a essential commodity now and he has two options in front of him
      1) to sell potatos in open market
      2) bake them into fries and chips from their branded shops
Any sane corporate chose the latter option given thag he achieved economies of scale in chips n fries making..
And you say hoarding is good.
Imagine you have only one borewell at your town and previously there was a rule that only two buckets of water per house for a day. Now they changed.. anyone can take any amount of water depend on their storage capacity. Obviously the Rich would take the most of the water leaving nothing to poor... Ask yourself whether govt has made any regulation that hoarded onions and potatoes are to be sold to end users only!!

Coloured reporting, as always. Didn't talk about how MSP will not go away, how this government has bought so much more on MSP than its predecessor, how these very same laws were in the Congress party manifesto, being a Khalistani does not automatically translate to having an India-hating family (Yograj-Yuvraj Singh is an example), Punjab has squeezed the individual farmers and gets 1000s of crores from annual central government purchases plus subsidies ... Hence the middlemen are protesting, NOT farmers. But kudos to the protest managers for optics management.
    Last two MAIN points:
    - among the list of demands of the farmers were two non-farming related clauses: repeal the air pollution act and let them continue stubble burning AND to RELEASE FROM JAIL THE "INTELLECTUALS" AND "FREE THINKERS" AND "POETS" (basically islamo-communist anti nationals) who've been jailed by the present administration. This protest is not about farmers at all
    - this is like protesting against disinvestment in the 90s. History is going to remember you as the turds who opposed Liberalization of the fam economy

She missed out on 3 important points:-
    1) Yograj Singh, openly supported Jarnal Singh and made derogatory statement about Hindu women. Obviously, Khalisthani elements have entered this movement. Protestors should themselves physically kick out these rogue elements out of the protest site and all Indians should see it. Otherwise, however right is the protest, it won't be supported by most Indians.
    2) APMC which are run by state governments should remove cess which makes them less compitetive as compared to corporates. Total charges in Punjab is 8.5%. Before GST, it was even more. This is the hypocrisy and this is the reason Punjab State government is organising this protest through proxies. No organized protest is possible without political support, directly or indirectly. There is nothing called spontaneous protest. Common people think it's spontaneous but they are actually not. She should have been truthful in mentioning that.
    3) Punjab and Haryana farmers are getting more than the ideal market price that should have been determined by market force (demand & supply). FCI is having excessive stock of paddy and rice but still giving MSP. Much of the stock is wasted every year. Farmers should reduce rice and paddy production and go for other options like oil seeds, which India is importing. MSP for long is not sustainable for any economy.
But I don't support the introduction of corporates in strategic areas. Food is definitely strategic.
I can't understand why government is not taking the following steps:-
    1) Export excess Rice and Paddy. If quality is an issue then give MSP as per quality and upto certain quantity, then automatically some farmers will shift to other crops.
    2) Introduce and promote attractive packages for crops which we import or has great export possibility.
Outsourcing to corporates is not a great idea. If at all government can't do it then it should be outsourcing it to educated youths not to the Ambanis of the world.
Centralisation of wealth and power should be avoided.🙏

For your kind information first read the law carefully...These laws are only given as an OPTION to farmers, there is no compulsion that farmers have to sell all their produce to private sector..they still continue and follow their old traditional of APMC method of selling produce..
Now the real reason why these so called farmers are protesting??
1.Because they don't want other small and marginal farmers to sell their produce to private sector as Punjab government will face huge loss in terms of state taxes and agent commission will also be impacted.
    2. Big/Giant farmers they give loans to small and marginal farmers and when they cannot repay the loan, these big/giant farmers take the produce in cheap prices and sell the same to apmc on MSP..
In short, small and marginal farmers don't even know what MSP is😒.. Reality is quite harsh and different from your explanation.
    Thank you.

I doubt if u ever visited village and explore how farming is going on.
Still the private player, middle men, gave, lend, money to farmers or engage them in contract farming. Difference is, this time big players will enter. They will not buy poor quality product. Very soon, the middle men will be abolished; who r huge in number. We will produce much better quality product.
Govt will not buy, most probably or reduce, food grains from farmers.
And of course, big farmers will be on loosing side, who are selling poor product to govt and get full money.
If possible visit fci godown, you will know quality of food grain we procured. Of course, govt officials are involved in this corruption.

One of your info is wrong. Punjab or Haryana is not the biggest producer of peddy or wheat in india. It's WB and UP.And farmers in those states are Okey with these laws. Farmers in punjab mainly grow wheat and rice and get max profit of MSP. Govt never removed MSP on first place..so no need to put it back. As we are over producing wheat and rice every year it's very tough for govt to buy and store unnecessarily. In most of states in India apmc already gone ...so farmers should think wisely and be reasonable and govt should give assurance of MSP. This is not the season so this farmers from Punjab is protesting...what they were doing in last four months ! Why they didnt protest that time? All this incidents are connected

But govt assured that the APMC will always be there and MSP will always be provided there, APMC will never be shutdown, its farmers choice to go outside and explore more options or to go to APMC, just like BSNL is there along with other private telecom operators to regulate the telecom tariff, My father is a farmer from karnataka, he is very hardworking person, we grow paddy, here from 40 years what i am observing is only the middlemen and millers are benefitting from our crops, after working so hard and investing so much on labour's and pesticides, facing natural calamities, labour problems, water problems, machinery problems, new type diseases in the crops and all, what we are earn is just to accommodate our basic needs of food, cloths, bike thats it, forget our hardwork, sometimes we won't get back our investment also, present crop cutting done in this dec month is a complete loss for all paddy growers here, yield reduced very drastically due to new virus in our crops just like covid on humans, we not made any property from past 40 years, we don't get any thought of making some property with that earnings, just life goes on with hardworking forever, so something to be done to benefit the farmers, all these days only businessmans, middlemens are having decent earnings and making properties everywhere, small farmers fate remains same even after another 50years until unless if something is done now, our country is developing means everyone of us should develop, everyone be a part of it, only few sector people are developing is not a whole development of the country, these farm bills are not a big news here in South India or at least in our locality, big protests and all happening there in North India, I doubt does farmers really able to understand these farm bills properly, mostly some opposition parties, middlemens and others who are benefitting now are having knowledge to understand these bills and its impacts and to safeguard their earnings in future they are provoking farmers with false predictions to protest against those bills, I trust our PM Modi like our family head, he never do anything harmful to the farmers or any other sector hardworking people, he doesn't have intentions to earn something by supporting corporates bcz he not even have children's to earn for them, treats all of us as his children's

You are absolutely incorrect by saying that APMC purchase on MSP. It never happens. The local brokers decide the rate for day and farmers have to sell it on those prices. The farmers couldn't take away his products wherever he could get more price due to APMC act.
You making points that private sector companies make monopoly but farmers are not bound to sell it him locally . Therefore the companies has to pay at par rates but in previous system farmers are bound to sell locally registered vendors. The farmers can't carry his products outside to get optimum rate of his products. The previous system help to establish monopoly of the local brokers.
In reality the local registered brokers have monopoly to fix rate considering his profits and all possible expenses. These all arbitrary expenses real or imaginary has to bear by the farmers.

Faye! agricultural problems in India are too complicated to be addressed in a few minutes. One of the biggest hurdle is our current political system where power is centralized. Despite centralization of power on many subjects, agriculture was kept state subject for a reason. Current government abused constitution to intervene significantly in agricultural matter without realizing its impact in certain parts if India and its eventual impact on PDS. Current Govt is making same mistake Mrs Gandhi made to bring Green Revolution. Bookish solutions may sound very good academically but sustainable solutions come from real life experiences. And real life experiences in agriculture are different in different parts of India and solutions will also be different. One size fit all does not work in India. It may work in Finland, Germany, France etc but India is very unique country and needs unique system for it to sustain growth and stability. Current chaos is totally unnecessary and will lead to more problems than we had before new laws in agriculture. Current govt's effort to turn India into one market will fail. This diversity is the biggest strength and defense of India against Imperial hegemony. Instead of using it for benefit of India, current Govt is experimenting to color it with one shade of Hindutva to create one big market. I can write for hours on India, and bore you with dry ideas. So I shut up and continue listening to brilliant minds like you.

      @indian5189 3 года назад

@@bharathsy You are right that she took a clear position that these new bills are not in favour of farmers. But why agriculture in India is distressed is beyond these laws. Current political structure is faulty and instead of improving it, current govt is making it worse by implementing bookish ideas formatted in successful western countries. China and Vietnam didn’t grow by following Russian Model or Western Model. They developed a unique system which dominant western economists are baffling to categorise in their format. India has to develop their own system based on its unique ground realities. In reality it would not happen overnight but during mass agitation there is a chance of improvement if a truthful narrative based on reality gets traction. There are lot of good intentioned politicians but they feel disheartened as people are less willing to hear them during normal times. I have a feeling that demand for decentralisation will get some traction if farmers got successful in getting these laws repealed. As of today it still seems very difficult that India as nation will do a meaningful course correction to be a healthy partner of international community. Current govt is determined to stay its course despite clear warnings that it will not work in India. Electoral loss or win won’t make much difference but if there are more people like. Faye processing/moderating information reaching out to public, there is a chance that we as nation will make better decisions. My views are not that important, Faye and other journalists who are not only intelligent but fearless good communicators also.

Is it true that MSP was not legally binding on the government even in the previous format of farm laws and was only an administrative provision and still worked well enough? If yes, then couldn’t the same kind of implementation of MSP still work as the government seems to state? Also the issue of real farm reforms in India (that ensure future food security, economic growth for the farmers, and reverse the detrimental effect on the environment of current farming practices to make agriculture sustainable) need a wider ambit than the MSP issue that the public needs to be informed about. In the real reforms the MSP will anyway have to go in favour of a market driven farm economy. But these new farm laws don’t seem to take us to the real reforms needed in the farming sector.

Faye, I feel the agriculture sector reforms miss the moot point. The farm holdings are small, they are managed by poor farmers who have several members of the family dependent on income from the farms, they cannot employ technology, mechanization or resources to improve yields and are pitched against the system whether it is the APMCs or the private mandis where they don't have any negotiating power. As long as these factors remain, there cannot be any future for Indian farm sector. I feel the only solution is to invite large private sector houses to be on the side of the farmers and not on the side negotiating with them. The govt should invite 10-20 ethically run business houses to invest in agriculture sector, take the farms on lease from farmers for a fixed income to the farmers, employ technology and resources to improve farm yields, and set up downstream cold storages and food processing units. This way, the farmers will earn income from farm lease and employment on the farms or in downstream units. The cooperate sector working on the side of farmers will help reduce the number of players in supply chain and also fetch better prices. The crop wastages will reduce and may also help bring down consumer prices. The participating private sector players can be offered tax breaks in their other profitable businesses linked to their investment in this venture. Agriculture reform is a national priority. Almost 50% of people in the country depend on income from an inefficient sector which contributes less than 15% to national GDP. Providing them alternate employment in the rural areas will not only reduce their migration to overcrowded cities but will also help improve literacy levels and curb population growth. The govt must take an active role in bringing private sector participation in this national mission. It simply cannot be done in public sector or informal sector. This is not crony capitalism but public-private initiative for reform of a critical sector.

Let's not forget, these are the same people who talk about 'Economic Inequality' & 'Job Creation'. The Irony.

@@ManjunathKamathKochi You are not doing yourself any favor by calling her "rice bag". It's an abuse and it says more about you than her.

Dear Faye, I watch your videos and find it very interesting and it encourages me to listen to you more cause the way you explain is so simple and clear. But the background noise and also your voice needs a little check name adjustment.
