    Jimmy Butler is a superstar but not in the traditional sense of how LeBron and Luka were already labeled as such from the moment they entered the NBA radar. LeBron and Luka had a buzz/hype around them before they went pro and were given the title of "superstar" because of their perceived talents.
    Butler, on the other hand, fought and worked for every opportunity he has in his life and was never really handed or given anything. That's why he has the mentality that he does as a basketball player. He might be seen as an "asshole" teammate or that he "only yells and gets on people's nerves" but that's just who he is, a dog that had to claw and fight from the bottom to get to the heights that he has reached. He demands the most and best out of his teammates, doesn't tolerate bullshit, and will keep it real. He was the 30th pick in the 1st round of the 2011 draft and was projected to be nothing more than a role player.
    Look at him now and see the work that he's put into his career. So say it with me:
    Jimmy Butler is a superstar.

That man has been adamant since he left Chicago that he could care less about points and it's moreso about whatever the team needs on that given night. He shrugs off point totals. Which is one of the reasons he doesn't average 25 in the regular season. When he used to worry too much about his points it didn't work out . Jimmy's one of the few players you can actually see having like 15 pts and still being clearly the most valuable player on the court any given game.

Also, in 2020 he went toe to toe with the superstacked Lakers(Prime Davis and LBJ-2 top 5 players)with 2 injured main players (Dragic who's their best scorer and Bam, their best defender as Butler that time is their best overall and 2 way player so as closer) winning 2 games and getting 2 legendary triple doubles and Miami was the only team to beat that team in 2 games and took it to game 6 and not even the healthy teams in the west did that. Now he averaged 27.4ppg in the playoffs and that's despite his knee injury scoring 8,6, and 13pts, if not for that injury he could've averaged 30+ppg and he was the only player who got 4 40+pts games this playoffs, took the best defensive team Celtics to game 7 too and only lost due to a short 3pt shot. But he scored 41, 29(didn't even play 4th quarter), 47, and 35 vs the Celtics and won. Not even KD fid that as he got swept, not to mention no one averaged 15+ppg and Bam(2nd best player) averaged 14ppg and Herro averaged 12ppg a game that playoffs. Now he was a complete beast and a different breed and was single-handedly carrying the Heat with injured Lowry, Tucker, and Herro while averaging 27.4ppg overall (not to mention, he had 8,6, and 13pts due to his injury), if you take that out, he'll average 30+pts and he's the only player who got four 40+pts games this playoffs with such superb defense and steals and with the conversation only with Michael Jordan. He too was injured yet got 41, 29(didn't even play the 4th quarter, 47, and 35 vs that best defense Celtics. That's a complete beast. Jimmy Butler is basically Jordan and Kobe in terms of mindset but the problem is he isn't as good as those two. I've always said being a leader like Jordan has severe limitations, you can't just be good or great, you have to be exceptionally talented, you need to be part of an institution that is willing to put up with you and most importantly you need to be so good that your coworkers also experience huge success with you. In terms of NBA it's winning championships, if an organization knows you can bring a title or get close they'll put up with a Jordan/Kobe/Butler leadership style but if you can't eventually people just stop listening to you. Once Kobe's athleticism declined no one really wanted to come and play for LA despite the fact Kobe had everyone's ultimate respect and during Jordan's years with the Wizards everyone got tired of him and again, that's despite the fact everyone revered him. This is the issue with Butler, he's a great player, he might be good enough to lead a team to a title but he hasn't yet so everyone will deal with his behavior but it's also why he's been traded as teams have decided that as great as he is he's ultimately not that guy. We have Chris Paul and Chris Paul is very similar and he's known to get to his teammates so that's why Paul and Butler have burned through some teams. They're great players, they command respect, they make teams better but when you're constantly in everyone's face and you're not taking them to championships eventually people just get tired of you and decide to move on.

    This is a great conversation. I can’t figure out my thoughts on Jimmy Butler (not that they matter), or for that matter, the definition of a superstar. Right now I’m thinking that superstars need to have the potential to overwhelm a game, to really take it over. I also want a superstar to do shit that is honestly amazing to watch. Giannis, Tatum, Curry, Jokić… They can all do this in very plain and obvious ways, and their best stuff is really, really incredible. And for some reason… Jimmy Butler just doesn’t do that for me. Tatum will be there he's still scratching the surface with his playoff scoring. Outdueling Giannis for a 46 piece in a pivotal game 6 is huge. But Jimmy has dropped 30+ himself since the 2020 playoffs in situations where the Heat had no one really generating buckets. He's the guy doing the work to get buckets to keep the Heat hanging with their defense and hoping a few of the shooters like Herro catch fire by the 4th quarter.

The better way to determine which players belong on which tier is the top 10, top 20 convo. Jimmy may not check all of the transcendent boxes of flash or dominance that we associate with "superstardom" but he is without a doubt one of the 5 best 2 way players in the game and for sure a top 10 guy..especially in the playoffs.The superstar thing seems too incomplete and juvenile of a description for certain players.

      It depends more if that current FO and team owner are on the same page. Like when Butler was in the T-Wolves he wasn't going to lower his price just to play with Wiggins and KAT who were going to get their rookie max extensions from old ass Glen Taylor. Taylor of course thought it would be better to pay those guys instead as value to create a playoff team than Butler so they lived with the consequences. Took them much longer even with KAT as a second option to become playoff relevant. Meanwhile Butler's been a winner wherever he's gone and he knows his value. If a team isn't built with the flexibility to take advantage of him and stay competitive, there is less incentive for him to be loyal to that org.

So while the Heat are still looking to get one of the top 10 players to come to Miami or get an equally tenacious top 20 player, Jimmy Butler will continue to get buckets and be a force for his team in the playoffs. Look at Butler's playoff numbers. Realistically, as overall players, I'd take Giannis and Jokic over him, maybe LeBron, but who else at this point? Kawhi hasn't been available consistently for years. Steph is a plus defender but doesn't have this level of two-way impact. Who else is even on his level in this league? Nobody would be a superstar on a team that didn't recognize them as such. Him being traded has more to do with teams undervaluing him than anything else. All the teams that moved on from him made MISTAKES.

Even Oladipo and Lowry was injured but they were terrible too offensively.

      What you don't realize is how weak Jimmy supporting casts are but still a 4 bounce lucky shot from beating the prime Kawhi(plus best defensive Raptors team in a prime Lowry, Siakam, Gasol(was the best defender of Embiid), Ibaka, Green, and Vanvleet in his team, so many veterans) in game 7, he was even the reason Phila didn't get swept and was the best player in the playoffs, he averaged 22ppg vs the raptors while Embiid only averaged 17ppg, Butler even sat most of their landslide wins and was really their closer). So as achieving Finals(2 legendary triple doubles and a win with 2 injured main players in Dragic and Bam, not even one healthy west team did that as they always got swept vs Lakers before as Davis was really in his prime and Lebron was really good too) and ECF right now while averaging 27.4ppg (could've been 30+ppg if not for his knee inflammation scoring 8, 6, and 13pts in those games, Pritchard intentionally injured him either).

While Jimmy only had inexperienced Bam & Tyler Herro, Strus, washed up and injured Lowry, Tucker, and Oladipo who just returned from injury. No one from them even averaged 15+ points in the playoffs like Bam averaged 14ppg and Herro averaged 12ppg and they can't win without Jimmy going off.

    Honest Question to Bill. Isn’t Harden the same as Jimmy? They didn’t pay him, he went to Houston. He wasn’t a Superstar? He just made top 75. Got MVP of the league. I don’t know. This idea that you can’t be a Superstar because a team trades you, just seem dumb.

    I honestly don’t believe that someone should be considered a superstar unless or until they prove that they can be THE best player on a championship team. The only players in today’s NBA that can honestly say that is Giannis, LeBron, KD, Steph (in 2015 before KD) and Kawai. I think Luka, Embiid, Jokic, and Tatum are POTENTIAL superstars. I could definitely be proven wrong about this, but I have had the belief that Jimmy Butler is a #2 talent with a #1 mentality and #1 intangibles. He’s the flipside of Anthony Davis who’s a #1 talent with a #2 mentality.

    Put it to you this way, Jimmy Butler is basically a different version of Klay Thompson. A great 2nd option for a team who will always compete on defense. If you put him on the Warriors, aside from the inconsistencies in shooting prowess, Golden State would still be Golden State.

    • @sawdum
      @sawdum 2 года назад

      This is just a bad take. Butler can't shoot at all. GSW is the GSW because of both Steph and Klays ability to stretch the floor and play offball. Butler can't play offball at all.

    • @meatusshaft300
      @meatusshaft300 2 года назад

      @@sawdum it’s not a perfect analysis. I get it. But, you factor in Steph’s gravity in pulling multiple defenders to him and another strong culture like in Miami, Butler could become just as effective at moving off the ball/increase his shooting percentages. He’d also set some pretty devastating screens for others to succeed on pin downs and then he could even slip thru to the rim off of that type of action.
