Not only is this a very space-efficient solution, but as you said it protects the paints from sunlight exposure and it also keeps the dropper bottles angled correctly so that paint doesn't sit in the nozzle. I'm glad that you mentioned that last point because I'd never considered it before, and the paint rack I recently bought has the dropped bottles angled upside down.
Socks drying apology is totally unnecessary. When I see a hobbyist video with regular household stuff going on, I know I've come to the right place. It's a mark of authenticity!
I have 2 Alex cabinets for all the bits, basing material, bases, light up stuff, etc. I got into a kickstarter for paint racks. All the paint is in 3 shelves right now. I like the 3d printed grid system.
1: You are hilarious😂😂 2: i am 100% LIVING the "before" desk!! Exactly about tryng to store stuff & organized but ending up with 250mm square area to actually work in with the most used stuff piled up close to hand!!! 😢
I did something similar, though I installed a bracket system that lets me adjust the size of the sections for the paints laterally. I also put cheap mousepads in the bottom to keep my paints from sliding. Bonus, they have sweet 40K designs on them for a little visual appeal.
Very nice. Regarding paint inventories, I actually created a Paint spreadsheet where I record all of the paints and models I own. If you use data validation to create a picklist of the details, adding in new paints is easy and it really helps to be able to tell that I don't need yet another pot of Blood Red.
I have done exactly this with a pair of Alex units and a 3m worktop as the desk. Left Alex has all paint organised at an angle just like this and Right Alex has all the brushes, air brush gubbins and a small tray with working paints in for the current project i can just pop out as needed. I used 25mm plastic angle for the Citadel paints (Amazon). I now have a cupboard full of expensive plywood racks I don't use.
I use something similar to your mail polish things, but they are vertical mounted on the wall. You have plenty of open space on the wall for them too. They are also dirt cheap and very functional.
Good video. When i finally get a new house and work space set up, I'm definitely going to do something similar. I currently have my painting area in the bedroom, my 3d printing area in the basement, and the terrain area in the garage
I got a large board, bought some plastic Corner covers (L-profile) and glued/screwed them on as shelves and put in my desk against the wall. It takes up a minimum of space and holds about 200+ paints.
Thank you for the video. Gave me lots of ideas. Planning to setup my paint space in another couple of months. Will be a combination of paint, airbrushing and soldering. I am going to start producing some electronic initiative trackers once I also get some 3D printers. I really enjoy having a standing desk, hopefully you will enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.
I just ended up having a monitor stand with shelves to house basing materials, and accessories and a product called hex hive to hold all my non-kimera paints. The hex hive has been so good as it builds together like a hive and will stay 1 bottle deep regardless of how tall it gets. The only issue I have is the Kimeras don't fit in that, so sit on the monitor stand in front of the hex hive.
Nice job looks great , I know how messy things can get in the hobby . I got a craft trolley with 6 shallow plastic tray draws 3" deep and 3 deep plastic bin draws 5 1/2" deep . Its on wheels has a nice platform on top for bigger stuff , fits under my desk and it cost me £55 from hobbycraft. You could add draw dividers inside the draws if needed . This could be a cheaper option if your on a lower budget and the bigger bins are handy for tools ect .
I have seen a couple other videos with this idea, but I like what you did and how you described it to us much better. So i subbed. THANKS. I think I will be doing this as well.. its a great idea.
On the drawer slides, you can get full extension drawer slides. Those would be sturdier than the modified ones and you should just be able to swap them out.
I checked for full extension slides and they do not really fit the small drawers as they are designed to carry lots of weight (and therefore are thick) and are way too expensive
@@os7272 That sucks, I would have thought most slides are the same width. They are more on the expensive side, but I can usually find a pack of them for not too bad of a price when I'm putting a new desk/table together.
This is definitely worthwhile considering. Summers get pretty hot where I am, getting the paints stored away from sunlight would help with keeping the paint useable.
Just for pure satisfaction; i suggest taking a clean rag and a spray bottle with water and dish soap, and giving everything a good wipe down! Get all the dust off and make the joy of opening your drawers even greater!
Appreciate this pal, me and my wife are currently building a purpose built hobby room for my wargamjng and her arts and crafts, will definitely be considering this!
Been using thesme IKEA drawer in white for several years now, nice tip with the strips for containing the Citadel/Vallejo bottles. I've been using plastic gardening trays from Wilkinsons to segregate my paints, contrast/metallis/base/layer/airbrush across the drawers. Use the top drawer for hobby tool storage, agaiin use gardening/cutlery plastic trays to store the tools in so I can remove them completely from the drawer if I need to get to anything at the back of the drawer, top drawer is the perfect height for Tamiya thin cement bottles as well - I have a thin glue and a sprue-glue bottles. I have an IKEA computer desk with a 90 degree return the drawers sit under, had to remove the casters from the base to get it to fit under the desk.
Love this idea I’ll definitely be doing this for my stuff. Also Mikey you missed a chance for the best joke. You should’ve started the video standing and then just sit down when you said I won’t stand for this.
literally liked this because of the "won't stand for it" joke... now I'm going to watch the rest, unlike the video, and like it again for the actual content. This is incredible and I now have an Alex drawer in my cart... thanks for the awesome idea!
It seems that Ikea changed the railings, as there are some small stoppers now at the end of the railing casing that prevent the plastic housing the balls to further slide out.
Since I am not in a position to have drawers within reach of my work table, for me the best solution is still the paint carousel. It cost $50 but it can easily hold 100 or more paints. It is four levels tall and is about a foot in diameter. You can rotate it to get quick easy access to any of them.
I have one of these drawers and its basically been a place for all my "long items" like sewing rulers, drawing pads, and painting trays. But a couple drawers were just ephermera which I've already thought about unloading since that drawer rarely gets opened. Also, mine is white so I think I'm gunna cover the drawer fronts with peel and stick wallpaper because I'm bored with the white after 10 years.
I made my self something like this. Here, in Argentina, its all so expensive, furniture too, doesen't exist Ikea. I buy 18mm mdf for the walls and 9mm for the drawers, runners with self-locking device, support 50kgs per drawer, basically, i made an armored drawers😂
Hell yeah nice system, I've been seeing more storage solutions recently. Glad to see this fun project, if and when I get enough space, I'd like to do this too.
I ended up doing a PaintPal Studio setup instead - it sits on your desk, buuut it includes drawers, elevated paint racks *and* multiple tiers so you can store a ton vertically. That said, 18ml dropper bottles are far superior to GW's jars, both for usability and storage space.
With the rails you can just drill holes in the rail an position it further forward to keep the rail strength or make new holes in the wood at the new rail position.
Pretty sure there is a different IKEA drawer system that pulls out further in their kitchen range. The Lego you tubers all use it. Personally still prefer my paints on the desk for easier access but does depend on desk size for sure
I just built a double sided turntable paint rack for the kitchen area. What sucks is I already built one paint rack and now I've built all the pieces and I still have to cut the holes for my next 2 paint racks. I was going to install in the hobby room. Now I feel like I wasted my time and effort. Because I think this is much more efficient.
"dont use a paint rack... just BUILD AN ENTIRE PECE OF FURNITURE FROM SCRATCH" For real though this is the logical endgame once a hobbyist buys their 31st paint pot/bottle

The only problem i see with this idea , give it 6 months or so and the bottoms of your draws will start to bow and sag with the weight of the paints as there only hard board .As they are not designed to take the weight . Also with your runners on the draws with the added wieght over time they will start to give where you have taken out the extra bearings .
@@xeleema Hey! Didnt see the main comment orignially, but i still use this daily with no issue, as the weight is relatively light even with that many paints. I dont pull the draw out so far its resting on the lack of bearings, only when i need to reach the back - but my only issue now is that i need to convert the rest of the drawers as i have too many paints
@@HellstormWargamingI made the same drawers and also haven’t had an issue yet. But I have had the sagging issue with some of my ikea drawers for my clothes.
