EpicLPer It sucks that we'll get no more Button Mash, as he had some potential in Jan's work. Hopefully Jan and co succeed in their future projects and don't hit any major roadblocks.
I can tell you that his new project he and Shady are working on will be great. They showed us something at Galacon and it was already awesome

@@askshadowboltmoon1476 the creator received a cease and desist from Hasbro for his animations with Button Mash (the character singing here), and when he tried to dispute it, he got stuck in a loop of corporate emails where no one was giving him a clear answer and he realized they were just playing hot potato with him to keep him from getting any actual answers about what he’d be able to do. They strung him on for a long time before he got frustrated and gave up

Seriously, it's the developers, the writers, the people actually MAKING the things that are always cool and in-touch, but whatever parent company holds the rights are the ones who are, at best, indifferent, but more often than not actively hindering fans in the name of the almighty dollar.

Why can't Hasbro do the same thing that Valve and Steam did? In their user agreement they allow for fan-made stuff and the monetization of it and say that the rights of the original still belong to them.
If Valve can allow that and still get payment and credit, why can't Hasbro?
Because then they are taking responsibility for Rule 34 content too which they DON'T want as its a kids show. Sadly its just more practical to ban all content that comes too close to looking authentic.

1. They are corporate dickheads with infinite greed for money but 0 idea of how to make money other than sell more crappy toys which are often worse than bootlegs. (I mean, who in their right mind would shut down a show that is one of their #1 most popular shows? Only Hasbro corporates, who would rather shut it down if they don't know how to squeeze more money out of it than lose any "opportunity" they don't know about :P )
2. They don't care, because they already have shitloads of money. (Doesn't it contradict point 1? No, and here's why: They _could_ have wanted more, but if it's at a cost of making any additional effort, it's already out of the table.)
Because Hasbro just cares about money so they can upgrade their “toys” into something....how do I say this...Weird looking Bighead figures?

I'm gonna be honest.
For the longest time, I've had this slight hint of bitterness and envy at the back of my head for you and your work. Even to this day, I still can't really explain it.
But now I think most, if not all, of that dislike has finally fizzled away.
While this is a great song with good backgrounds, I can't help but think that within a few hours maybe a day at most Button would end up returning home because his game ran out of batteries or he ran out of juice boxes.

But the song shows that he knows he wont be seen ever again all of jans pony animations were for the most part restricted like button the first episode was removed from the channel due to apparent "copyright infringement" and so he cant use buttons in anymore animations and thus he is starting to fad away i never saw why was jan hit with that cease and desist bull junk uea the animation looked really close to the original but instead of striking him they could have offered him a possession with the animation crew or some high postion but well they did that and now look only 3 vids related to pony and there animation style isnt to close or the environment isnt like what you would see in mlpfim

God, you've all done a good job here, but damn am I just bummed out now.
The visuals and idea of him leaving home, leaving his family, and probably never to return - obviously to reflect the C&D situation where you physically can't use the character at all - is so upsetting. As a character, the poor kid is just gone, his family will likely be in such a panic and worried for him, and just like us they won't see him again. They're losing a brother, and a child, with the whole world ahead of him.
Meanwhile in the real world, the fandom loses one of it's most loved characters, and whilst the send-off is lovely and it's nice to see that Jan was able to make something Button-related one last time, how upsetting is it that because of the whole situation we're never going to see all the things everyone had in store for Button and his family? It also makes the old stuff a bit bitter to look back on, because we all know that without Hasbro's involvement, it could still be here, and be like the old times. Meanwhile, Hasbro have suddenly begun using their Button Mash rig more often, but recoloured it so that it's not the same Button, trying to cater to those of us that liked what Jan made out of that character, like "hey, look who it is! You guys like this background pony, right?"
I dunno man, I'm bummed. I'm thinking too deeply on it. I wish it all coulda went differently, feels like such an unjust end, a death if you will, to something with so much potential, and so much joy to give. Thankfully, Hasbro can't destroy your original projects, so good luck to all of them!
Jan could have focused these past years on LITERALLY anything else and made a huge success out of it. But no, he's still stuck on the bloody Button Mash shit.
I still don't understand why he didn't do what he said originally, continue Button Mash but with his own artwork. Heck make him human but in his own style, it would still have worked as "we" know who "its supposed to be".
Exactly. He should have done what Mane6 did with Them's Fightin' Herds. Even if he had to change the name from Button Mash to something else. I'm sure we'd have stuck with him. Or focused on a totally new project!
Sadly, this is beginning of the end of the show and the fandom in general. All good things have to pass eventually. It's been wonderful 7 years (although I wasn't that much into fandom since 3 years) and I never expected that a show about colorful horses originally geared for little girls would be such a big part of my life.
That was hell of a ride. I know there will be another two seasons, but I wish they will finish it on good terms.
And thank you Jan and countless other pony artists for giving this show life. I hope whatever you do, you'll make as much impact with other stuff as you did with your pony projects.
Tokarief you are right...as sad as it may be. I just started doing mlp commentaries for this season...but the coming end of season 9 is headed our way. I wish to make something memorable for the fandom before it all ends though and hey, let us party on until the end, with cheers in our hearts and smile on our faces

What makes this more emotional is you can almost hear Button's voice crack before he hit the last note - like he's about ready to break down in tears, because he's feeling the same as we all feel. And I promise you I almost felt like crying because of how much emotion this carried. And remembering what this means for us all. And.......for poor Button Mash.

Some people are complaining about not actually seeing button mash,But they don't understand that you can't show him cause of the copyright,But even without seeing button,This video is still great!
Well, I wouldn't say so. If the copyright were interpreted in the correct way, this would be out of the question, because it would only protect content that was actually made by Hasbro/DHX (clips from their original show), not an original artwork made by someone else, using his own resources, and containing clips that NEVER appeared in ANY episode of the show. And Jan should have fought back, if only he had enough strength and will of life after the C&D to do this, because that's some utter bullshit right there, and abuse of the copyright system as a tool for censorship and killing the competition.
It reminds me a similar situation in which companies like Apple are trying to shut down third-party repair shops in far away countries by suing their owners for "counterfeiting" Apple products when they simply try to repair stuff brought by their customers after Apple refused to repair their stuff :P They don't do the proper customer service, and at the same time they try to stop others from doing that, using their own resources and talents. That's bullshit too. But in this domain, people are more willing to fight back, and quite often winning.

Being the very character that introduced me the the world of MLP, its at least nice to see him get good closure. Shame really though. C&D happened, only for the show to do nothing with him. Not even a slight voice role in Ep 100 or beyond. That would have been a dream. Where Button will go next, the world may never know.
Jan, Shady, you two, in one little 5 minute pilot, made such a legacy. Button was never a product. He was always a fun idea. And I’m sorry he never took off thanks to the big suits. Had he come out today, things surely would’ve gone differently. Vulpwood will be a great way to have Button’s original comedic tones live on though, and we all patiently await to see what you come up with next! ❤
I am actually of two minds of this, having finally sat down to watch it.
On the one hand, it is clever in both message and the myriad of visual references, and as others have said it's obvious you poured a lot of love into this project.
On the other hand, I for one was never so attached to Button Mash that I needed this closure, and I have a few issues with the way this was animated.
Don't get me wrong, as I and tons of others have already said, this is a very, very nice send-off to the little colt that could, but I almost feel like I *should* pick at a few nits because of how few other people seem to be doing so.
As far as actual criticisms of the animation goes, I do think this is clever -- not as clever as other people make it out to be because I have seen it before, but clever nonetheless -- for the message and visual references while never outright showing or speaking of the situation or the character. After all this time, Button needed a send-off like this. However, that narrative conceit also meant that there wasn't much in the way of actual animation being shown on-screen, I couldn't help but notice. I highly doubt you whipped this together very quickly -- after all, the time for all the art in the backgrounds alone would have taken ages with as beautifully detailed as they are -- but it does give off a bit of an impression that corners were cut. On that note especially, the focus on that dandelion seed especially makes it obvious that the seed was just a layer being moved and rotated since it didn't spin on the z-axis like you would expect something like that to do. The dandelion seed actually looks especially out-of-place because of how beautiful the rest of the video looks and then it's just... flat.
I realize that you don't have anything to do with the song itself, but I also had a LOT of issues trying to make out the lyrics. Between the backing music rising at inopportune moments and my own hearing issues making ShadyVox's voice hard to make out, I was scrubbing, rewinding, changing playback speed, and using captions all in an effort to actually make out the lyrics. I feel like in a video as important (relatively speaking) as this, the lyrics should be a lot easier to make out than that. The message actually IN the lyrics, though, is really well-done. A lot of people have already picked up on the subtle references to the legal issues and Button Mash's current state/situation, and that is just fantastic. It makes for an entertaining watch/listen even while, ostensibly, getting news about it.
Anyway, I just thought I'd give my two cents. It's not worth anything more than that, so feel free to toss them aside for how useful they are nowadays.
I appreciate your constructive comment, man! Thank you for your time and I'm glad that you at least liked the art. Admittedly, the dandelion itself is not exactly something I'm happy with either, because you're right - it could have been done better.
My original intention was to make it sway and rotate a bit more, but there just wasn't any time for me to do so.
The production schedule for this video was very tight. Less than two months after the animatic was finalized, and the animation itself was completed less than 24 hours before the Convention release!

Glad to see this even though it's been years since the C&D. I think you played this carefully enough to still make it as good as showing the characters in an animated form. Never thought I'd see anything else from this idea until the trailer so this was a nice trip to the past. Glad to see you're still passionate about the characters you created enough to go through this trouble. Amazing job from you and everybody involved. You never disappoint. :)

Jeez, I wish that hasbro can accept your show on RUclips and make it into a spinoff series of MLP: FIM on the tv, instead of hasbro hating it and making “cease and desist” on it you know, like maybe hasbro is jealous about that or something else like that

No It's NOT goodbye!!!! Button Mash will FOREVER live on through the Bronies and fandom. Just because JanAnimation can't do Button videos anymore doesn't mean hes really gone. As long as we keep doing videos and tributes to the character without getting C&D, then there still hope for the character. If other Bronies can do videos like Octavia and Vinyl etc, then why can't Button Mash. He may no longer be with Jan Animation and they maybe moving on from ponies, but that doesn't mean we have to say goodbye to the character, at least not right now. If it was me, I were to keep his character alive through comic dubs, music videos, and shorts that are not too similar to the actual show. Button Mash was the reason why I started watching My Little Pony and the reason why I fell in love with the characters. If it weren't for him I wouldn't be watching the show today. That's why to me Button Mash will always be a huge part of the show (No matter what people say). Whenever I watch an episode about the CMCs, I play one of his videos just to keep his character alive. Jan Animation maybe done with pony videos because of Hasbro, but that doesn't mean we have to actually say goodbye to Button Mash. I've seen music videos, Lets Plays, tributes, deviantart, fan-fiction, and shorts of the character and people doing what they can to keep his character alive and a part of the show. Though I'm sad that Jan can no longer do pony videos, and I'm going to miss there animation style, however I still believe it's not the end of the character. If we can keep working on videos and tributes for the character, then he's not gone and he's still a huge part of the show and he will forever live on through the Bronies and fandom. So to me it's NOT goodbye, its "See You Next Time". As long as the Bronies and fandom will everything in there power to keep his character alive then there is hope. Because I believe in the fandom, as much as I believe in Button Mash. So Jan Animation thank you for giving us a beloved character and we'll do everything we can to keep the character alive and a part of the show. I can't believe I only watched this now. To be honest, I was in Italy when this came out and the hotel internet there wasn't all too great so I couldn't watch it. I kept reminding myself to watch it, but it never occurred to me until now. After watching this, I can really feel the tears flowing out me. I had more than a year to prepare yet I still couldn't help crying. It's funny. I'm writing a heartfelt letter in a RUclips comment in a video about some character in a show for little girls. Button Mash was basically a character I related to due to his quirkiness, his love for video games, and his overall charisma. It wasn't Hasbro's character, to be fair because it was more so Jan who gave him the character that's truly captivated me. It would probably forever captivate me, even when Button's now long gone. I just didn't expect him to be gone so soon.
Whatever the case, thanks Jan for giving at least this wonderful yet sad send-off to our beloved character. It may be Game Over now, but there's always a Continue in the near future. Maybe through another character, another spirit? Who knows. As of now, Button Mash will always remain in our hearts.

Was never a MLP FiM fan but your animations of him were pretty dang cute and the incredible quality you put into replicating the style perfectly was always something to behold! Button Mash was voice incredibly well too, and it's a shame that Hasbro had to treat you so cruelly over the wonderful work you've done! Hasbro must really have no respect for non-profit fan made content like this created purely out of love for the series.
Regardless of you not being able to animate MLP styled videos without C&D, you have an incredible talent overall to your animation quality and I know you'll do great things with it!
Goddamn I can't wait for covers, This is not the kind of voice I'd listen to often but the animation is, like always, A+. For what it is, there's so much passion AND budget that went into this and it shows. A certain scene got me REAL hard, same as the chorus. Great job as always Jan.

Here's another layer to add to the sadness. We've never seen Button's dad.
Gibbson we all saw in the incomplete animation and that was enough to view his base character. The dad... When we first see his picture, his face is obscured. Normally in animation this sort of visual story telling would suggest some sort of estrangement, but we were denied a chance to ever find out for sure. That dad wasn't even mentioned here, because Hasbro bullied his son to the point where he was never allowed to show his face.
There was just so much story just waiting to be told by people who were inspired by and loved the source material. But, because the owners seem to hate their fans showing love in any way that doesn't directly lead to profit, well...
I know it's not much, but I'd really love it if Jan could take whatever scripts they might have written and post them onto Fimfiction. Maybe it'll help if we can see what greatness might have been.

A video where Button is killed with a RIP Button's Adventures note appeared at the end of the Cutie Re-Mark Prequel, which initally had nothing to do with Button till that insert at the end. (Ironicly I think thats the last video that person I believe made, as another C&D Joke Button animation from 2014 was the last 2D Animation I seen from the other animator before starting on SFM Pony animations)

This is one of the most emotional send offs I have seen to a character I was so deeply endeared to in only a couple fun videos. Loved the heart and soul that was poured into this animation and song. I once proposed a better idea that could possibly be beneficial to the entire fandom: make a fandom-wide chip in and BUY THE FRANCHISE from Hasbro :P Or at least an irrevocable license that would allow every fan to safely make fan works with ponies from the show. I mean, come on! We're numerous! And some of us spend quite a lot of money on pony merch, supporting the company that doesn't necessarily support us in return :P Isn't it a huge mistake and waste of that money? Whatever amount of money they would want for that license / the entire franchise, divide this into the number of fans and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be much _per capita_ :q
Bon Bon we already buy their merch, we watch their shows, we sit through the commercials of each upcoming episode even if it's not for mlp, we attend the conventions and they still don't care, they want to be the ones on top, the ones in control, the heroes and the villains, to them we are statistics and an easy payday, and to them this is them getting to play the villain, this is them showing us that "You can't do anything with our show"...and it's also why I don't watch mlp that often anymore, because Hasbro doesn't care about the fans, they only care about the money.
Then DON'T buy their merch (it's crap anyway; fans make much better merch). Don't watch their commercials. Don't attend conventions if they make any money on it (unless it's an independent convention made by the fans and for the fans). Support the creators of the show, the people who are actually working hard on it (the writers, artists, musicians, animators etc.), but not the corporation that screws THEM too. Vote with your wallet. If money is all they care about, then I'm pretty sure that this is the form of protest they will notice. And save that money for what I mentioned earlier. Maybe one day... ;)

Because Hasbro has every legal right to not allow anyone to use their characters. It's scummy as all hell, but this is a big corporation. There's been tons C&D'd by hasbro, and an online petition won't change that. Besides, it's been 4 years. Dan is laying this to rest with this video. It's been a hard journey, but it's time to move on.
