I think that Boimler actually got his wrap up. Standing on the bridge with the whole senior crew and saying "Everyone shut up and listen to Shax" is genuinely bold, and not just Bold Boimler™️
He also did suffer some of that downside to boldness, when his cocky impressions of bridge crew did hurt feelings he absolutely did not want or mean to hurt. It wasn't the getting injured sort of obvious penalty-for-boldness we'd expect but still was within the field and well done.
@@jeffengel2607 I think the whole "Bold Boimler" thing is just part of him maturing as he's growing to (hopefully) one day become the great officer he wants to be. He's intelligent, but is still not experienced enough to get there. However, I think that in a few years he will make an excellent navigation officer (or even captain/first officer).
I myself liked where Boimler ended up. He spent all season just doing “Bold Boimler” things to find out he needed to be “Confident Boimler”. Yeah he needed to try new things, but this episode showed he needed more to be willing to speak up and be firm. We have seen Ransom in the field. He isnt the smartest. He isnt always the best. He just has lots of confidence in himself and knows when to speak up and when to prop up others. Boimler did that finally. He used his big boy voice and propped up Shaxx bc it was the right thing to do.
Shaxs walk of glory down to engineering was a thing of beauty.
Truly
I loved the revelation that Petra Aberdeen's employer was Picard. It does seem like something he would do since he cares about archeology a lot and knows he can't actively do anything about it, not within starfleet anyway. Small little details like that really make this show.
There’s the episode of tng where the transporter malfunctions and Picard and a few crew members get turned into kids. He contemplated joining the archeology guild if they couldn’t figure out how to reverse the effects. It’s a fun detail!
Could Petra be Picard and Vash's daughter?
@@CoCoComet Age is off. Lower Decks is maybe 5 years after the Dominion War, so Picard and Vash only met maybe 12-15 years ago. It would have to take (e.g.) time shenanigans from Q, which could make a little sense given his interest in Picard and time spent with Vash. It's a real stretch though.
One of the (very, very) many things I loved about this episode is how the crew reacts to Tendi "losing" the race for them: universal understanding and acceptance. Dr. T is a constant joy.
I like that Jennifer saw Mariner and looked so guilty. It acknowledges there are feelings, and they can do more with them in the next season. We don't want everything wrapped up at once.
This episode displayed a moment of healing for Mariner. That she shouldn't run away, but go back and receive the warmth she deserves from her friends and family.
Boimler is now assertive, he stood up for Shaxs and presented him his moment of glory, he's become such a fine officer.
Tendi is now a mentor and did what was right even if it might cost them, and it ended up arguably saving the day.
Rutherford... well, he didn't really have a moment of character growth or anything, but he did unravel the mystery of the Texas class
Every one of our Lower deckers helped save the day in the way they know best. What a great feeling.
When T’lin walked in i literally raised my arms to the sky and shouted YES!!!!! I then repeated this action several times
"Maximum warp me!" - Now Lower Decks even has the greatest captain's catchphrase of all of Star Trek. Just sooo damn good.
It’s nice that we saw her come up with it in S1, too. At first she didn’t quite own it, but then she settled into it, and now it’d be hard to imagine a different one!
This was absolutely the conclusion of Boimler's arc. He has internalised his boldness. There was no planned blodness, no seeking opportunities... this is who he has become: "Shut up and listen to Shaxs!" That was his moment... the bravery to centre-stage someone else in a moment of crisis... bold on behalf of the person being sidelined. This was a complex moment in the story and the timing was a thing of beauty, one second within a busy scene that also resolved his issue with Shaxs, saved the crisis, put the right person to the fore, and gave Shaxs his dream moment all in one. It closed the vast 3-season personal maturity development arc for Boimler. That's a captain-in-the-making I'd trust anywhere.
The episode was about 'doing the right thing' regardless. Call it 'principled defiance.'
Rutherford did it, Boimler for sure did it, Mariner definitely, and earlier in the episode, Tendi too... oh, and the entire Cali Class.
And its kinda the flip side of the previous episode where everyone just seemed to be 'doing the wrong thing.'
The character who didn't progress so overtly was Freeman - that apology was needed at the end but those are words that need backing up with actions. Cue Season 4... 🙂
Buenamigo's argument about how automated ships will save Starfleet crews from going into dangerous situations makes me think of Q's line from the end of "Q-Who?": "If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you oughta go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross, but it's not for the timid."
I didn't cry about the Shax scene but I did cry about all the California Class ships showing up, it was so heartwarming. I would still watch this show, if it was only 3/4 as good as it is right now.
Also, Tendi was like that Admiral's natural counter. DS9 mission success? Tendi. Reason why AI doesn't work for second contact (aside from faulty AI)? Tendi. Tendi was the rock to that Admiral's scissors.
Yes! He underestimated the crew based on his perception of Freeman.
which is extra ironic seeing as she's what set badgey off in the first place and the Admiral used that ai to control his ships
Boimler WAS showing some boldness by telling the entire bridge crew including the captain to shut up and listen to Shaxs which helped save the day by eliminating 2/3 of the Texas Class ships.
The heart of this crew and story is just priceless. A gift for the fans for sure. I love hanging out with Cerritos crew, and thanks Jessie for the takes this season!
What an uplifting and fun episode. Mariner coming back and showing her love to her friends was so good. Boimler earning Shaxs gratitude and friendship. I also love that the code that made badgey, was in the Texas class ship.
Loved that the first person she hugs is Boimler. He is her best friend.
I had a sneaking suspecion that Buenamigo set Freeman up to fail in the Deep Space Nine episode, its nice to see that the season all tied together. And it at least means that the Rutherford's past storyline is seperate from the Section 31 story or what they plan on doing with the rouge AI trio later down the line, I was a little afraid that they were going to tie absolutely everything together and leave us with no hanging threads outside this one story.
Also it says something about the growth of this show that it didnt even feel the need to have any legacy characters in the finale, if anything this episode was a celebration of Lower Decks itself.
I was a little sad that we didn't get to see more of Mariner and Petra being loose cannons together because I thought that would be so fun. But I love what we got. I hope Petra becomes a recurring character in season 4 because she's really fun.
She really shouldn't have returned. Not after that Starbase 80 fiasco.
@@stephenbyrne2170 Damn, Starbase 80!?
@@stephenbyrne2170 she wanted to be in Starfleet. But she did let her mom off easy.
@@sayhibobbi THATS WHAT I SAID!!!!
@@KnightRaymund Damn right. I wish Admiral Freeman was apart of that episode. He might've been level-headed enough to at-least listen to his daughter's side of the story.
I was worried they wouldn’t be able to wrap up the story in just one episode, but oh boy did they ever, and it was epic!
Although I already can’t wait for the next season, I’m happy they didn’t end it on a cliffhanger so the wait will be more tolerable.
Youuuu got it.
Of course, they sacrificed episode 9, to prepare everything and have a spectacular closing.
Even so, everything they could put in in such a short time is impressive
This has left me so hyped for season 4! We get T'Lyn, Boimler under Shax's wing, Mariner under Ransom Wow, and a dude being hit point blank by shipboard phasers was pretty brutal. Personally I'm fine we didn't get a scene between Mariner and Jennifer, I expected better from her when the crew turned on her, especially as her gf. Also, I ship Boimler and T'Lyn.
I dont know why but i also am totally shipping boimler and t’lin
@@Mordark It is only logical.
But why do you ship them? It's something I've never seen the appeal of. If I ship T'lyn with anybody, it's Tendi who introduced her with the Vulcan equivalent of a French kiss.
I guess you could call the resolution of this episode an example of... "class" solidarity ;)
Jokes aside, I think this is an excellent payoff for the ethos of this show; that even the small or mundane roles (thematically embodied by both the lower deckers and the Cali Class as a whole) are essential to the continued success and survival of Starfleet as a force for good in the galaxy. They deserve the same recognition and respect so freely given to the more flashy roles of captains, admirals, and top-of-the-line ships like the Enterprise. After all, a coalition of "outdated" California Class ships working together were able to accomplish what a single Sovereign Class could not. Solidarity is powerful.
Also California vs Texas lol
It will be interesting to see how Season 4 continues to develop Mariner. It feels like they have closed the first book, and Season 4 will kick off the second book with her newfound purpose.
Can't wait for some more Mariner-Ransom shenanigans, their relationship is the classic "I can't stand your ways, but I begrudgingly respect you"
I’m glad they brought on the “Vulcan Mariner” been waiting to see her introduced to Lower Decks. Also, Boinler seems to have gotten his tackle intuition from serving on the Titan.
I am loving any chance we get to see inside the head of Lt. Shaxs. I am a sucker for any sensitive and bombastic character. Him running to live his dream of ejecting the warp core just... *sniff* I'm so happy for him!!
And yes, I finished this episode and ran to RUclips to see your review. Cheers, Jessie!!
I liked that Boimler finally got what he wanted from last season; a Bridge buddy. Such a fun episode, especially Shaxs tearing up as he gets a cheering honour guard from the bridge down to engineering to drop the warp core on the Badgeyfied Texas class ships.
Love Shaxs, love Dr T'Ana, love Mariner, love-love-love Tendi.
Awesome to see that Mariner was smart enough to call in every single California class ship to save the day, and that she's back where she belongs. Hope there will be some reconciliation with Jennifer in season 4.
Super excited that T'Lynn has joined the crew at last and can't wait to see her and Tendi moving forward.
And of course, the cliffhanger question of "Who picked up Rutherford's original implant with Badgey in it?" The Borg? The Drookmani? The Zhat Vash? Someone else who has green tractor beams? Just imagine Badgey taking over the Borg. So terrifying
"We are the Borg. We will burn your hearts in a fire. Resistance is futile."
Boimler speaking up on the bridge was a climax of the bold Boimler story line.
I love your enthusiasm. I've made a habit of watching this immediately after I finish a "Lower Decks" episode.
I would have liked to have seen more between Jennifer and Beckett, but I suspect we'll get something next season to wrap that up, or possibly continue it.
Loved the post-credit scene! I think we'll see evil AIs unite, which actually might set up "Picard" a bit, or give more justification for the banning of Synthetics.
Very pleased with this episode, and was very happy with the "Avengers, assemble!" feeling with the Cali classes showing up. Left me with good feels.
What an awesome finale!! I was screaming constantly! I actually quite liked having Jennifer just looking startled at seeing Mariner again and nothing further. I feel this can be perfectly picked up on next season but it was still acknowledged now. There was no room for it in this episode.
I think Mariner seeing Jennifer and choosing not to speak to her said way more than any conversation could. I was actually rather happy that they didn’t have a conversation because Jennifer would probably just try to talk her way back into Mariner’s life and she is not good for her! Her choice of friends should have been a huge red flag 🚩
I have to disagree about Jennifer not being good for Mariner, mainly because they didn't do anything with them as a couple this season. They had one episode together before the break up last episode and that was it. I feel like there was so much they could have explored with them, at least given them a couple of more episodes together, before breaking them up if that was the plan for them.
@@coleslade True their screen time together is pretty short, I wonder if they're gonna be together again or if Mariner will have a new love interest next season
I agree completely. For Jennifer Mariner was just a fling. Why should Mariner approach her? Also why does Mariner need a 'ship? I get that the Queer crowd wants to see representation but it also needs to make sense. I don't think the writers really been able to come up with anything interesting for Jennifer. If Mariner has to have a 'ship, let it be the hot archeologist.
I saw it as Jennifer not wanting to have a fight. This might pick up in season 4.
@@coleslade think of it like this then. Jennifer liked the Mariner that defied authority and phasered her friends. That was part of her personality for two seasons. She wasnt there for her character development. The Mariner Jennifer really wants already cracking by s1e9, and basically disappearing by s3e2
I love that Mariner just wanted to come back on her own. I also think T'Lyn joining is awesome! Which is closer to you, Jessie? You have to choose! I think you're a Tendi more than a T'Lyn but just a little!
Yes, I love that Mariner wanted to return on her own, when she was doing ok, and admitted to her mistakes. I was afraid she would end up in an alien prison for stealing artifacts and the Cerritos would have to save her. I also like that Admiral Picard sponsored Petra and not some villain.
Also I wanted to say I just love your excitement for this show. It's actually watching your star trek videos and seeing your passion that got me to finally start watching through all of trek and I'm really glad that I did! :D
Well now I’m hoping for a season 4 love triangle between Badgey, Peanut Hamper, and Agimus. Or maybe a polycule, I don’t know. This ship might be getting out of hand.
As long as it doesn't go full Texas-class.
I would argue that Boimler's story arc does get some pay-off as he went into his Bold Boimler phase because he wanted to show off his skills as an officer and prove that he wasn't just a push over who went along with everyone else. And by standing up for Shax and directly pushing back against the Captain and the other bridge officers, not only does he save the day but he also finally gets his bridge crew buddy - not by lying about his interests or kissing someone's butt, but by genuinely standing up for someone and it was such a great moment. I pretty much agree with everything else you said though - great video! I've been really enjoying your lower decks reviews this season and I can't wait for the next season.
I love that mariner, wasn't predicatbly screwed over and that her main reason for returning to Star Fleet was she found value in itself to return. Also love the full ark mariner went through from episode 1 where she hated the idea of being directly under someone who could seriously penalize her to asking for ransoms tutelage. it's nice to see that there's growth and she's willing to learn. I would have loved to maybe have seen maybe an episode seeing how she missed star fleet and how maybe loved the freedom of civilian life but that star fleet offered her what civilian life just didn't
First!
Also, Tendi won line of the week with “Starfleet ships can’t have daddy issues” 😂
I LOVED this episode. Everything about it made me smile, and I had a tear in my eye more than once. It even.made me like the visual of a million copy pasted ships which I've hated from modern trek, it made sense here! Not that I don't like the other shows, but wow Lower Decks is special. Can't wait for season 4
As a Texan I was thinking about the song we all were thinking of when we hear “the stars at night-“
Are big and bright
It sad that the Sovereign Class got beaten in this episode, but I'm not complaining, at least the California Class gets the opportunity to shine. And I'm happy that Shaxs have finally gets the opportunity to eject the Warp Core.
And I'm also happy that T'Lyn is back and part of the Cerritos crew, she's actually one of my favorite Vulcan characters in the Star Trek Universe. I really hope she's a Main Character, not a recurring one.
P.S.
Like the uniform by the way.
This was a great finale! I loved it! I think it's just as well the Mariner and Jennifer story line didn't get resolved.
Mariner is better off, imo, without her. It's going to be sad there's no more Lower Decks, until next season.
The stars at night are big and bright
Deep in the heart of Texas
I confess it amuses me that Admiral Buenamigo was, in the end, a bad friend. Also, I'm playing the lower decks mobile game and it's as fun as it is addictive.
I've really been enjoying that game too!
Actually I loved that bit between Mariner and Jen. It's what I would have done in Mariner's shoes. And if I was in Jen's shoes and had been on the receiving end of that, I'd be very aware of "yeah I deserved that" There's no conversation because it's unnecessary. They're done. Their reactions do the talking. Now what I would - potentially - like an early to mid season 4 "Okay we fucked up, but can we try again?" moment, where they can sit down, have A Comminucation and maybe start anew with a clearer understanding and on more equal grounds. I don't want them to have the classic kiss-cry-breakup-makeup because it doesn't feel real. I want them to feel real. This feels real.
Since he showed up i was like "Buenamigo thats....not a real name this feels weird like if my last name was Gutentag" Did we have JK as a guest naming writer? So it was kinda cool it was one of those in your face, ironic naming conventions. Like if we learned Art the Clown's full name was Art Kindcleanliness. It was a fantastic season and liked that T'lyn was brought in i really felt that was gonna be the season 3 arc so its cool it was a slow burn and is something to switch the dynamic up in season 4 instead.
With the Tendi thing, I think it makes sense that she'd want to be both science and captain. There are definitely ships in the fleet that spcialise in that kind of thing.
"COMMAND - THAT - CHAIR!" That warmed my heart 🤣 Ransom turned into my favourite character over the three seasons. Looking forward to season 4. Thanks again for pointing me towards that show 🤗🖖
Tendi didn't just care, she followed procedure. Also very Starfleet. The way everyone else stopped to left her finish with 0 resistance shows that it's procedure. That's really what sank the Texas class. The computer should follow procedure whether it cares or not and it skipped that step.
As a San Diegan, I got a kick out of one of the Calis being the USS San Diego.
A great and satisfying conclusion to the season that almost gives an ending vibe while setting up the next stage for the characters. While all the LD finales have been great, I think what elevates this one to the top was how it was a culmination of its own story elements and aspects. This really feels like a season finale LD did all on its own without relying on past shows.
The 4 leads all had their time to shine with their own character moments and evolution. It was also great to finally see T'Lyn join the Cerritos and await all the shenanigans with Tendi and possibly the other 3 next season.
They really nailed it this season. I also had tears of joy when Shaxs got to do his thing.
This episode was great. It had the camaraderie that I love seeing among the best Trek crews. The LD gang have faced a few struggles but they're confident in their abilities now and they push each other to be the best.
With what you say about payoffs - I really wish this show had longer seasons. This show is comparable to Futurama but has fewer than half of the episodes and takes longer between the average season. There's no reason that LD seasons can't be 20 episodes long so that we get more threads and side episodes like the Peanut Hamper ones don't really disrupt the flow. Ron Moore said that the TNG episode Lower Decks couldn't happen in the movies because 26 episode seasons let them explore a lot of ideas and now with modern Trek the seasons are so short that they often do fall into that trap.
I loved this episode so much. I loved how they got all of these storylines wrapped up while still being its own thing.
All of the Cali class ships appearing reminded me of the finale of Picard's first season where a bunch of copy-paste Starfleet ships appeared on the scene to look at Robot Cthulhu, do nothing, and leave again. I read it as a parody on that, rather than Parallels, but it might as well be both at once.
Thanks for letting me know about the post credits scene! I totally would have missed it otherwise. Pet theory? Agimus and Peanut Hamper made a jailbreak and are collecting AI for nefarious purposes. Planting and payoff, yo!
I am so upset that there was no Santa Ana ship, but I guess I'll settlle with the Anaheim. I'm glad that at least that there is some more hispanic representation with Boimler liking pupusas
There was an Eureka! You don't understand, most people forget we are even part of CA!
@@katecraig2974 now I have to rewatch just for this!
It seems like the Texas class would be much more of a replacement for the Defiant class war ships other wise they seem to be wanting it to be a self driving long rang com relay. Great episode!
It could do fine work as a _supplement_ to less combat capable, crewed starships exactly like the California class. It's great for fighting. It's dubious for judgment. It's useless for sentient exploration and contact.
Best character development in all of Nu Trek. You actually know all about them and care what happens to them. Shak getting to eject the warp core was just one aspect of this. Not only did it make perfect sense for the scenario it was a wonderful character payoff! I was so happy for him! PS I think Badgey is going to team up with Peanut Hamper and the AI who was voiced by Jeffrey Combs sometime next season.
I think if Mariner saw Jennifer, she'd only say, "Just keep walking, Jenn." Which is to say that they're not going to revisit this romance. It is sadly Picard and Nella Daren. I did love Jenn's guilty look as Mariner just brushed her off.
Considering how well in advance this finale was probably planned, it's cool that it dropped right when the debate around AI-generated art is booming.
This ep was one of the best but it deserved a longer runtime IMHO, sooo much stuff to unpack!
love term "badmiral". I am just amazed that the admirals were so Gung ho for the texas class. but I guess Kirk's time is enough in the past they forgot what m5 did to the fleet. when I saw the slash lines of color on the Aledo display I thought oh boy this won't end well.
we found out badmiral not only set freeman up in the previous episode he earlier had set them up at deep space 9. remember Carol didn't understand his explanation of why the other ship wouldn't be there .
liked how they resolved part of the mystery around Rutherford. as for boimer his standing up on the bridge but I expect alot of his story will be in the future and whatever is going on with his transporter twin. still surprised texas class waz just one admiral run away pride and not section 31 subplot.
I agree with others. Mariner 's just walking past Jen waz perfect.
Dadmiral, badmiral... wonder what Jessie has in stock next :)
This is my second favorite season finale of this series, and a few more, there were such strong moments and funny too, well travels ends and travels begin and this one just having a rest, until the next adventure begins.
I KNEW BUENAMIGO WAS A BUST!!! I knew it the hole time!!! but never tough how deep would be, and I am happy that mystery is solved, we can now move forward with Rutherfor and explore him.
so... do you want to eject the warp core?
I will say that I did suspect early on that Buenamigo was the one behind Rutherford's implant because there just wasn't anyone else it could have been outside of being a random cameo from another series, and the show was really doing a lot to draw attention to this reoccurring admiral all of a sudden, but they didn't actually tip their hand to his motivations until the Texas-class reveal, at least.
Well, aside from giving him a name that translates to "Less Goodfriend."
I’m not going to watch this video yet because I haven’t gotten around to watching the third season yet. But my sister worked on it, and judging from the thumbnail and the first second of the video. I’m glad you are enjoying it.
1. Nope. We don't need 7 seasons. This needs to be the simpsons of the star trek world. 70 episodes is not enough.
2. MacMahon said in an interview a long time ago that T'Lyn was coming back for season three. when she hadn't shown up in the first few eps I forgot about it completely. It would have been nice to have seen more of her but it makes sense, she wasn't star fleet so they put her through training.
3. They should have brought Jack McByer back in this episode.
4. I think they will eventually have Peanut Hamper, Agimus and Badgey team up as a villainous super group. Maybe season 5??
5. I love happy endings, especially when they are earned.
6. We need Patrick Stewart on this show.
7. Thanks for telling me about the post credit scene. They've never done that before so I just shut it off.
What is it with Starfleet constantly experimenting with AI-controlled ships and it constantly blowing up in their faces??
-Daystrom's M5
-S.31's Control
-Buenamigo's Texas class
None of this went well for you, Starfleet!
Maybe someone should ban AI. No. That's stupid. Let's have them do something safe like build ships on Mars.
Heh heh didja catch the M5 easter egg??? Buenamigo's control panel for the Texas class uses the same interface! 🤩
Well, tallying up, I was half-right about the dangers of the Texas-Class rising up (just wrong about what AI exactly was controlling them), but I KNEW that Buenamego was up to no good, he was always conveniently there when things went wrong for the Cerritos this season.
EDIT: Dang it, lost my heart fixing a grammar error. Whoops!
My initial thought when i finished the episode is that Mariner's turnaround was too quick but the more I think about it, I think I'm coming around to it. I still might have preferred to see more of her adventures with Petra and see her go from angry at the Cerritos crew for betraying her to realizing that they felt that way because that's the reputation she's built all along. But I think it works well enough as presented here, she has grown a lot this season so seeing her figure things out without too much trouble just emphasizes that all the more.
Bold Boimler makes his way onto the bridge and yells at the Captain, that's a pretty big step for him and it helped save the day. It also gave Shaks the best moment of the episode. Shaks! Shaks! Shaks!
Tendi gets the hero moment by caring enough about microscopic life not to ignore it, losing the race but proving why people need to do the job. Rutherford solves the mystery behind the Texas class and his implant. Good moments for everyone.
The sequence with all the California ships showing up was pretty amazing. Something about Boimler just rattling off the longest list of ship names made me laugh. I also cracked up at the quick shot of the ship that looked like the Cerritos crew but everyone was a little different and Boimler was a bug. Mariner's return was good, I think the quick shot of Jennifer looking guilty and Mariner walking past was alright though maybe they could have made it clearer whether Mariner didn't notice her, didn't care, is still angry, etc. Hopefully there's more resolution on that next season.
I've got a soft spot for Badgey so I'm looking forward to that. Would be cool to rope all the evil computers and Peanut Hamper into the evil machinations too.
Shaks! Shaks! Shaks!
This was one of the best season finale's of a show ever. So many callbacks and plot lines and characters that were properly set up with time and care earlier, showing up not just for a reference but to braid all the previous plot threads in such a fun and climactic way that felt so rewarding.
Not to mention the amount of character growth for so many. Even in a way for villains, like Badgey was a joke right ? He was a one off joke for an episode and here he is being the actual big bad that was very powerful and actually threatening and got defeated by people caring and helping each other. I love this show.
Not sure I like how Mariner being forced out of the ship being undone so immediately. I guess I’m glad that she somewhat owned up to her end of things but I would’ve honestly been fine waiting to at least part way through next season for her to come back.
As for the end battle…I think it was pretty exciting, but kinda weak as season finale plot. Still looking forward to season 4!
I loved that the Texas-class interphase was the M-5 interphase.
Telling the bridge crew to shut up and listen to Shax seemed pretty bold of Boimler.
I'm happy that Shax finally got to eject the warp core but I am sad I will have to wait another year for more Lower Decks.
I think Boimler's conclusion in a way happened on the bridge. The old Boimler would've never stood up and shout at everyone, incl. the Captain, to shut up and listen. That's Bold Boimler coming through, and it saved the day :)
This really was a fantastic season finale! Seeing the whole California class show up at the end was also quite the treat, especially since I grew up in the San Diego area so seeing a USS San Diego was a treat too!
Jacket looks great BTW!
I think 3 interesting details are overlooked:
1- the sovereign class felt like when the odyssey appeared on DS9, a moment where we show a facsimile of a hero ship to highlight how outclassed our heros are.
2- the choice of Texas v California felt very deliberate and not just because they are the 2 big dogs in US politics. In tech Houston and Texas in general seems to be trying to replace Silicone Valley which is largely driven by companies investing heavily in AI. Texas is also smaller government less restriction vs the more human driven policies of California that tend to work for the benefit of the rest of the country ie California setting tighter MPG standards and driven them further up across the US.
3 - The AI going rouge builds up a better case for the federation ban and even deep distrust of AI from Romulans we see in Picard.
Yes! I saw some Texans who were like “automation sucks, THAT ship should be the California class, because it’s inhuman”. I avoided engaging but I pretty much thought what you said here but written worse. Talk about missing subtext! So seeing your comment was very validating.
To add to it, conservatives often paint California as useless or dysfunctional, and that’s exactly what happens in this episode too. But taking longer on the scans (“wasting time”) showed up a problem which would’ve been found (caring about ecology).
I'm glad they didn't touch the Jennifer situation, because they could only have some off handed bit about it, and it's gonna take way more than that to feel satisfying to me. I can only imagine that even touching that story is gonna be painful for it;s characters, and lets be honest, it's not gonna be good and it would have drug down the energy of the finale. Hopefully they focus more on Boimler more next season now that he's made a lot of inroads with the Bridge crew. That way this season was just like a building season for his character.
Jen's face when Mariner walks back in, Boimler shouting out the names of the Cali class ships! Superb episode for many, many reasons!
No cliffhangers, no ominous post-credit scene, just joy 🥰🥰🥰
Yes there was a Post credit scene. Someone (or thing) found Rutherford's old implant in the areea of space where they fought the Packleds at the end of Season 1. And on the eye screen Badgey shows up. This leads to a theory that the next season will have to deal with all the Rouge A.I.'s.
That sexy Sovereign class was named USS Van Citters, after John Van Citters, the VP of Brand Development for Trek. He does soooo much behind the scenes stuff his title doesn't really do him justice.
Telling captain to shut and listen, that's bold, Bold Boimler!
I think Bold Boilmer was payed off in a great way. The Brad of season 1 probably wouldn't have even have registered that Shax's idea was the best on the bridge, and in season 2 he wouldn't have been able to shut down the bickering on the bridge and command attention that way. It's only because he's Bold Boimler that he had the self assuredness to tell the captain, first officer, and rest of the bridge crew to shut up. Then once he did, rather than repeating the idea he threw the conversation back to Shax and let him say it again and let Freeman work through why it was a good idea on her own. I think that scene is a real culmination of his three season arc and really shows what kind of commander he'll become: Someone who knows their strength comes from those around them and will have the ability to cut through the noise and elevate the best person for the job.
Jessie, I know the exact emotional moment you referred to and I was exactly the same. At least four viewings down the road it still gets me because it's up there with the best hollywood movie reveals.
McMahon is a genius storyteller.
The Riker maneuver!
The long rambling list of California class city named ships!
Great fun episode.
I _knew_ they drew our attention to the old implant floating in space in the Peanut Hamper episode for a reason.
I hope that, now we have T'Lyn, Klingon!Boimler also gets a cameo at least once.
So, maybe this is just me grasping at straws, but one of the Cali-class ships called out by name is the West Covina, and sure, it's a city in California. But it's also where Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is set, and Eugene Cordero was a frequent guest in the first couple of years, and Gabrielle Ruiz who plays Castro and T'lynn was a regular on it - and T'lynn joined the crew at the end of the episode... Was the ship called out by name as a reference?
(And hey, can we get Rachel Bloom on the show sometime? She does voice work too! Oh, and Santino Fontana!)
man, watching your lower decks recaps is like taking a vitamine pill.
The bold conclusion is when he stands up for Shax and tells the captain to shut up, something he'd never say before.
Along the warp core they also ejected Mariner's and Jennifer's ship so that's a double win 😂
Can't wait to see T'Lyn on the main lineup! Her introductory episode was very good.
Also, I really hope we see more Petra. They just can't throw away that character now that they introduced her.
This was an incredible episode! I loved how they used the corrupt admiral trope here. And it feels like Trek! Its such a good show!
We got a San Jose I'm soooooo happy for my city! No longer just a Jupiter class now a California class!
Uff I loved how well planned the final chapter of the season was.
We always saw the Cerritos being saved by superior ships, this time is rescued by the other California Class, connecting with Captain Carol Freeman's speech in the final chapter of the second season and then connecting with Mariner "Lower Decks", "Lower Decks"... it was beautiful.
Also, connecting Rutherford's story so well, it was obvious that Buenamigo was the one who ordered the implant, at least for me.
I say the ship that the old Rutherford designed was a seat with thrusters, of course it was based on a design that did not need support for a crew.
What was the big reveal was the reason.
It was the AI that caused the accident and that was what Buenamigo wanted to cover up!
Everything squares.
The plot was also very solid, they had already said that the Cerritos was the flagship of the Low class.
They had to discredit that ship and that crew, to bring down the California Class.
And the Cerritos kept and increased they reputation, they fought alone and defeated 2 Texas Class ships, when it took the entire California Class to defeat one.
They are the best of the best and contrary to their reputation, they risked their places in the competition, to maintain the principles of Starfleet.
This makes they reputation so great that now they send the Vulcan spawning prodigy, it's the perfect ship for her.
I also liked how they handled the story of Mariner and Jennifer, it was a one-sided relationship, two seasons it was Jennifer trying to get closer to Mariner, finally she got it and let her down, obviously she wasn't going to get close, she was close to harassment before, she can't.
And so endless details, so organic, that they make planning clear.
I love the Show.
Captain Kathryn Janeway seems like a model for the direction D'Vana Tendi is headed-someone who captains purpose-built long-distance science ships like the Intrepid class, and who got to command rank by prioritizing Starfleet's science projects.
As someone born and living in CA, I loved all the California ship names being read by Boimler... I couldn't keep up! Glad to see the Alhambra ship is still alive since I made a HAMBRA shirt not too long ago lol.
I did like seeing Mariner and Petra PLUS Admiral Picard founding Petra's adventures. WONDERFUL.
I'm glad to see my hometown's namesake ship returned repaired, The USS Merced. And I love at the USS San Diego exists too, an adoptive home of mine.
Fun detail - when Rutherford runs through his scan modes, one of the officers in the lounge a) doesn't have a skeleton and b) doesn't show up on the infra-red.
I'm from Oakland, CA and when the USS Oakland showed up to scrap, I cheered. THAT'S MY CITY!!
Texas Class should be used for defense of the Federation rather than taking the humanity out of the exploration side. Drone ships to put people less at risk while holding off threats and the like. Provided of course that they aren’t easy to hack, given that some of those threats include the Borg, the Tal Shiar, etc
EDIT: oorrrr Badgey could take them over
Just put a Data in charge of the ship
@@anna-flora999 Data is a person
@@Cdr2002 as are the AIs star fleet has locked up in their vault, indefinitely, in inhumane conditions.
But yeah, data is a person. And I feel like under certain conditions set by him, he'd agree to it. He was after all also OK with himself being scanned and replicated, once the technology advances far enough for that to be done without destroying him
@@anna-flora999 I suppose, though the idea doesn’t sit well with me. To be clear, I don’t agree with Starfleet’s repeated demonstrations of how they treat sentient AI. Peanut Hamper deserves to be imprisoned in the penal colony of scenic New Zealand just like everyone else!
"Badmiral"
This just >must< become shorthand for such characters in Trek.
5 stars. Would recommend.
Also, since I'm just commenting this, it must retroactively become a thing that everybody has been using for years, nay, decades. Because.
Another thing this finale got me thinking about! I think New Trek's format of 10-12 episodes a season is a great thing for telling stronger, more thought out, and better produced episodes of television by allowing everyone more time to really polish the scripts and the final episodes. But there is a part of me that wonders if it makes it more difficult to tell stories with true ensemble casts like we had in TNG, DS9, and Voy. If we had twice as many episodes and Tendi's Senior Science Officer training only came up in two more of them would it feel like a more complete arc? Would the cast and ship feel more dynamic if, in the need to fill out a larger season order, we had a Jennifer or a Jet episode? It feels like the shorter season orders allow the writers to elevate only the best stories and we just aren't seeing the kind of clunkers that recurred throughout the older series near as often in new trek, but I do wish we had more time with these characters. I guess I'll just have to wait until next season to see them again.
When the justification behind the Texas class was mentioned, I remember Janeway saying to Seven in „One Small Step“ (was that the title? The one with astronaut Kelly and the graviton ellipse) that if scientific knowledge was all they were after, the Federation would’ve built a bunch of probes.
I’m excited to watch it
The title told me there was somthing rotten "deep in the heart of Texas".
Cali Class! Cali Class! oh and Picard too. :P Jacket is awesome!! I loved this episode, too!!!!
